When will the madness stop!!!
Why does anyone here want to trade away our best player. No matter how much you deny it, Bmarsh is our best player. Everyone hear acts as if we have T.O himself on our team. If its not Fitz or Andre Johnson, then there is no replacement at the WR position for us. Hasn't anyone learned from last year's off season fiasco. Denver traded away its then best offensive player for picks in order to fill other needs on the team (which we didn't do), and this years offense sucked (rarely kept drives going). So now everyone's saying that we should take another step back, by getting rid of Bmarsh who seemed to make up 90% of our offense.
Trading Bmarsh for picks wont help, seeing as how we would have to fill his void with a high pick. If we draft Dez Bryant (who isn't better than Bmarsh), then we'll just be trowing short passes to Dez Bryant. There's also no way that the jets trade David Harris for Bmarsh, when he plays a important role in Rex Ryans "D", and they have Braylon.
I know everyone is going to jump at the chance to say how wrong I am. But when you do, tell me how any other player we get for him is going to help us.

Hey, bud, nowhere here do I claim I want to trade Ryan Clady.

If Clady plays lazy and disinterested like he did in the Chef game to close out the season, he won’t be considered out best player much longer.
Clady was our best player in 2008 (by far). Both Marshall and Elvis were better players for us in 2009.

Can't agree with you...
BMarsh isn’t our best player, just the most notorious! I feel Dez Bryant is ahead of Marshall at the same stage of their careers.. In 4 yrs, I believe he’ll be better than Marshall, and much more likely to be playing, whereby Marshall could be suspended out of football. Can’t prove it, just believe it! Our best player is Clady or Dumerville! Again, notoriety doesn’t mean greatness, just as stats dont predict results.
TRADE MARSHALL NOW!

Dez better than Bmarsh........Wow!!!!!
Dez Bryant could only wish that in his 1st 4 years in the league he would have 3 strait 100+ catch seasons, which is what Bmarsh has done. You say Dez is better than Marshall coming out of college; well so were guys like Mike Williams, Peter Warrick, & Charles Rogers. Do you remember any of them? At the pace Bmarsh is going he could be one of the top WR in NFL history when his career is over, which could be next year, or 12 years from now. You cant predict anyone’s future, cause if you could, I’m sure that guys like Williams, Warrick, & Rogers would have never been drafted. You and others are stuck on the fact that he doesn’t have the perfect boyscout image, so he must be traded, and that’s were your wrong.
Also, Clady is great, but he’s not our best player. Defense and touchdowns win games, & last I checked, he does neither. It’s the price linemen pay. Doom is one of my favorite players, but he’s not better than Bmarsh either. If either Clady, or Doom got as much bad publicity as Bmarsh, you’d be calling for their heads just like your doing Marshall’s.
I guess everyone just loves to hate the bad guy.
KINGS WILL BE 09-10 CHAMPIONS
Last I checked Oline has a lot to do with giving the offense the opportunity to score TDs, so yes Clady is (IMO) our best offensive player.
Hmm...I agree that Brandon was 90% of our offensive production this year...
But I am in absolute agreement that Clady is the ONE and ONLY irreplaceable player on the Offense.
Games are won and lost on the lines and Clady is the best LT in football right now.
A great LT may not score many touchdowns, but he sure as hell makes them happen. The price linemen pay is to not be recognized by fans for what they are. The damned well better be recognized by the coaching staff.
90%? Dramatic Exaggeration perhaps?

unfortunately, I’m not sure Brandon wants to be in Denver. I tend to believe from what I’ve seen this interaction that Brandon wants to be someplace where he can get paid lots & rack up big stats, irregardless of whether or not the team wins.

When did Dez Bryant become a Bronco?
Last I saw he was waiting to see which of the 32 NFL teams would draft him. Darn it, I must of pulled a Rip Van Winkle deal and slept through the draft when I dozed off at my desk. Hogblog, can you tell me who won the Superbowl?
PS. Kidding aside, I do agree with you. When BMarsh wants to be, he is easily the most dangerous weapon on the offense. But until he decides that he is going to play every game and every down, he is definitely not the best player on the Broncos.
Doom
I love Doom. He plays the game the way it should be played and has a great attitude but I’m not in the camp that he is a must sign player. I sincerely believe he would fetch more on the open market then MArshall would. Teams will ALWAYS over pay for sacks. I just think that there were far too many times when he was invisible during games. I could be wrong but I would much rather keep Marshall and take a first and third round pick from say Miami and trade Doom there. Draft Brandon Graham to replace him on the outside.

I am looking into the future....
And it doesn’t involve Marshall. I’ll say again that the same stage of careers, Dez Bryant has better skills and upside than Marshall….Bryant will go on top 15, Marshall went in the 4th. So yes, his upside is much better. Time will tell! You can bring up guys like Roy Williams and DHB, others. But that doesn’t make your point, because they were good players who went to pathetic franchises, it ruins their skills and eventually, they lose their will. They burn out! Marshall went to a pass friendly team and became a 6’4" #2 WR or we like to call a possession WR. He’s not Fitz, or Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Calvin Johnson, Sidney Rice, etc.. Don’t mistake reality for a lack of appreciation for Marshall, but possession WR’s are generally not #1’s or game changers. When was the last time Marshall’s catches won us games we otherwise wouldn’t have won? This year it was only one..,,Dallas ! Catches create stats which is what Brandon lives on, not how those stats result in wins! He’s more notorious than great. Fitz, Rice, Wayne, Marshall? You tell me….who makes he biggest difference/impact on their teams play and more importantly, a teams winning results. You know…. Don’t you? Is ok to say it, we already know….and not one of he aforementioned WRs had 21 catches in one game. Trade Marshall, get Bryant and another WR like Benn, Gilyard, Alexander, We’ll be great!
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
Really not sure
How you can say that he didnt help us win more games. All the yards and TD’s didnt help us win any games? I guess the only way you win a game is when you make a spectacular play near the end? Well if thats the case then knoshon was a complete bust.
I seem to remember him making some nice plays in the Giants game. Don’t yards and catches equal moving the chains? Do you expect the running back to take it to the house on every play? The Qb to throw long balls into the endzone on every play?
I dont care if you dont like him , but his production be missed.

Brandon had 2 TD catches against NE
I’m pretty sure those 12 points came in handy in the overtime win…
The other interesting thing is that Marshall played his best football down the stretch, unlike the rest of the team. He was the only one on the offense who showed up for the Indy game. KM managed a staggering 2.7 yards/carry that game and the nearest receiver had a whopping 48.
I love how memories fade so quickly…
Might I add
Marshall did it against the team in the SUPERBOWL.
Gaffney had his best game against a 5 win Kansas City team.

This conversation keeps going 'round and 'round.
yet people keep overlooking a simple fact. Brandon Marshall was unhappy and wanted out before he even MET Josh McDaniels. He was pissed at the training staff before Mike Shanahan was fired. Mike Shanahan had issue with Marshall ‘nursing’ injuries.
The guy DOESN’T WANT TO BE A BRONCO. Would I like to see #15 stay? Yes. But at what cost – the other 52 guys in the locker room???

Thanks John
My thoughts exactly. I would love for Marshall to stay but right now it’s all in Brandon’s lap right now. If the Broncos offer him a decent contract and he rejects it then I will know for sure he wants out. If he accepts the contract then it was all about money all along.
The other issue I have is this bit about running off 4 of our best players if marshall leave is garbage. Hillis didn’t prove his worth this year, Schefflers attitude cost him not McD, and as far as the bears currant QB well he ran himself out of town.
Be careful with the facts.

That is ridiculous Bena.
Marshall wants more money. His angst is based entirely on his low salary is vs his on field production.
He doesn’t care which team he plays for. He would be much happier on the Broncos with a new deal than playing for any of the other 31 NFL teams for anything like the $2.4MM he made in 2009.
The guy wants a raise.

If a new contract makes BM happy then I’m all for paying him. I just think it goes deeper than that.
I agree...
But that is not a McDaniels issue. And which part of what I said is wrong? PUBLICALLY he has expressed anger towards the training staff and PUBLICALLY he has asked for a trade. So, PUBLICALLY he has stated he does not want to be a Bronco.
Nothing I said was “ridiculous”.
As for his pay, QUIT GETTING ARRESTED!! We still haven’t gotten to a calendar year from his last run-in with police.

Anquan Boldin PUBLICLY asked for a trade.
……..Yet your all for a guy like him joining the team. Cause he’s not Bmarsh, who you love to hate. We could draft Dez Bryant and he’d pull a Crabtree on us, then everyone here will be looking stupid. My point is; is that the NFL is all business 1st, and when a player ask to be traded, it’s mostly just a ploy to get paid.

The thing I live about Shannahan
WAs he always locked up players before they were due. Usually 1 year. It kept salaries lower because they didnt get to the free market, and the players were happy to be taken care of. At the very least Kuper shouldve been resigned. I can understand worrying about Marshall’s attitude or Dooms ability to play a new position but now were stuck with all these free agents who had huge seasons and its going to take some serious cash to resign them all.

Marshall’s catches didn’t make us better, it made is exactly what our record was: 8-8, and that’s mediocre. This year, last year, and the year before. In fact Jabbar Gafney looked every bit as skilled when Orton threw to him as he usually does to Marshall. You know what? Gaffney set career marks in our last debacle against KC, and all those catches had the same impact that Marshall did….catch passes, rack up stats and LOSE the game. And let’s not forget those ridiculous “Drops” by Marshall. Gaffney’s attitude seems to make a better fit with similar talents, and much better value. Cmon Balt, give up those picks, and you get Marshall! We all be the better for it! It’s a win win! Love ya Brandon, but ya gotta go! Hello Dez! Hello Gilyard…..or Denario Alexander or Wiley Cooper too. Bring on the extra picks!

If Gaffney his so great......
Then why aren’t teams after him? The only person to agree with you would be Al Davis, who still cant find a WR.
KINGS WILL BE 09-10 CHAMPIONS
Completely agreed
In fact, the first three or four games of the season Gaffney was the only one we threw to. I can remember watching the Giants game and thinking what an amazing reciever BMarsh was when he made that one handed catch. I can then remember watching Gaffney make the same incredible catch in the game against the Chiefs and thinking he might just break the NFL record for single season catches in that game as well. And no, I’m not say Gaffney is good as BMarsh, but I can assure you the offense is just as good with or without BMarsh (with the draft picks we acquire).
“Touchdowns and defense wins games”. Hmmmm, nice insight there never would have thought of that. I would give anything as a GM to have a good Oline. It makes your run game excellent, regardless of runner, and it makes your quarterback and recievers also excellent, as it buys them enough time to get open complete passes. With the exception of the Chiefs, ALL recievers will catch nearly every ball thrown to them and with enough time ALL of them will get open (which depends on the Oline).
I believe Olines make running backs and recievers. Talent is nice to have for backs and recievers, but I would willingly trade any skill position for the possibility of developing the Oline to a greater extent.
And also, DOOM IS THE MAN and a great player, which I would say is reason enough to resign him.
Well said raccoun...
Any QB can tear up a defense given enough time, and any RB can look like a stud running through gaping holes. If I’m building a franchise for the long haul, Oline is my top priority, once that’s set I go get my QB.
Doom is a great player
But he is a one trick pony. But if it comes down to it do you really want to pay him a contract that is similiar Peppers or Freeney?
Also, if you’re saying that Gaffney was the only person that we threw to for the first three or four games and Marshall was suspended for the last game simple math tells me he had over 100 catches in 12 or 13 games.. Thats pretty impressive if you ask me.
You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?

tr - Your first comment is completely inaccurate
I agree with a lot of what you say, and although I’d miss Marshall, if he has to go, there are alternatives. The O-line certainly worries me more than the Marshall deal.
But the part between you and haze regarding Gaffney is completely off. Gaffney is the only one we threw to in the first few games? The one we threw to most during that time? The first number below is how many times a receiver was targeted, just to keep this accurate. Here’s reality:
Cincinnati
B.Marshall 7 4 27 6.8 9 0
D.Graham 3 3 40 13.3 20 0
J.Gaffney 4 3 25 8.3 21 0
E.Royal 4 2 18 9.0 11 0
C.Buckhalter 2 2 11 5.5 7 0
B.Stokley 4 1 87 87.0 87 1
T.Scheffler 2 1 29 29.0 29 0
P.Hillis 2 1 6 6.0 6 0
Cleveland
B.Stokley 7 5 70 14.0 37 0
J.Gaffney 5 3 82 27.3 49 0
B.Marshall 6 3 34 11.3 25 0
E.Royal 9 3 20 6.7 11 0
K.Moreno 2 2 22 11.0 11 0
C.Buckhalter 3 1 30 30.0 30 0
D.Graham 1 1 3 3.0 3 0
T.Scheffler 2 1 2 2.0 2 1
L.Jordan 2 0 0 0.0 0 0
Dallas
C.Buckhalter 5 5 55 11.0 23 0
B.Marshall 6 4 91 22.8 51 1
D.Graham 3 3 36 12.0 15 0
T.Scheffler 3 3 26 8.7 11 0
E.Royal 6 2 16 8.0 12 0
K.Moreno 2 2 11 5.5 9 1
J.Gaffney 4 1 8 8.0 8 0
So, the reality is that Gaffney wasn’t targeted the most in any of the first three games (by the way, or the fourth, either) nor did he have the most catches. But he was excellent on third down, just like he was in New England. I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the NE games over the offseason and saw how often he made good catches when a drive was on the line. His performance against KC was against a weaker secondary, but he was extremely good getting open off the line all year. I don’t care whether or not someone likes a player, but it’s good to keep to facts. By the way (for haze: why aren’t teams after him?) – we don’t have a bit of info as to who else pursued him, so let’s not start making things up.

Disagree that Marshall should stay
I’m going to stir the pot a little more and challenge the statement that keeps being made about Marshall being a “top 5 receiver” and "best offensive player" in this and other posts. Yes, I realize that he’s had 3 consecutive 100 catch years and whatever other stats you want to throw out. I think stats can be misleading since they’re influenced by the QB, team, and scheme, so let’s just use the “eye test” and go with what you’ve seen. Here are my thoughts: Marshall is a great possession receiver who’s big and tough but drops too many balls. As others have said (and Brandon has admitted), he needs to work on the deep ball. Personally I think we’d be lucky to get much more than a 1st rounder for him and I also think getting an impact O lineman like Pouncey or Iupati would offset whatever we’d lose in Marshall.
Here’s my list of who I think are “better” than Marshall (in no particular order): Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings, Vincent Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Sidney Rice
Ilike that list
I’m not sure about Jennings though. He seems to disappear in some games.

Vincent Jackson
I’m sure if you asked a lot of Chargers fans what they thought about Jackson it wouldnt all be warm and glowing. How many DUI’s has he had? Also, did I misread it somewhere but didnt he get pulled over the day of the lose to the Jets? He’s a great talent, but he is also a headache.
Plus, this is Jackson’s fifth year in the league. Second year of actual results. MArshall has already done much more then Jackson has and still has a year to improve.

2 DUIs
He’s a very good receiver, but….his attorney kept the second DUI off the court docket to make sure that Jackson wouldn’t be suspended last season. You’re right – on his way to the Jets game, he was pulled over and it turned out that he was driving without a valid license and with expired tags. I said he was a good receiver, not a Rhodes Scholar….
Moreno/Buckhalter in '09
Well statistically speaking
he is a top five receiver in catches, top 10 in TDs and yards. So from that standpoint he is a top notch receiver. The difference between Marshall and your list is more about attitude on and off the field than it is play on the field. Although Vincent Jackson does have his own issues to contend with, he can’t seem to keep get the fact you can’t drive under the influence and and expired license.

ok, thats fine..
I wasnt sure.. Brandon is definitely a top 10 reciever in this league. Borderline top 5. But that can change on a week to week basis.
Out of all the guys that gimmee listed only Marshall and possible Calvin (although he did play in Mike Martz’s offense) are not in top flight passing offenses.

Being a top ten receiver
is still a pretty nice place to be. After all there are 32 teams, and only a couple have more than one top flight receiver statistically. With most teams running three and four receiver sets, being #3 in receptions overall is a pretty good position along with being top 10 in yards and TD’s this past year. I think what most of us would like to see is more scoring, although Brandon had 10 TDs in 2009, in comparison Welker lead the league in receptions and yardage, but only had 4 TDs posted. So there is more to be done team wise than just focus on one player IMO.
Last note, any player can have a game they seem to have disappeared in; happens to the best of them.

Resign Marshall
Once he gets paid the attitude will stop. Simple as that. He should be the Broncos #1 priority this off season. Doom #2. They should tender Orton with a 1st and 3rd pick and Scheffler with a 2nd. Orton can have this year to show some progress before Broncos resign him long term. Brandon Marshall is already a proven commodity
To Clarify
Brandon Marshall is thinking of his financial security with the impending lockout in 2011. If he already had a contract that reflected his on the field performance he would have played through the injury at the Chiefs game. What would happen if Brandon Marshall did play through the injury and severely injured his hamstring (To the point of career ending?) he gets nothing. I honestly think that when he gets paid he’ll be happy and the Broncos will be happy
Resign Marshall...
and once he gets paid, production will stop. How about that? Sounds like a serious risk to me
The same risk can be said about Dumerville and Orton
It’s less of a risk of signing Marshall than drafting a Dez Bryant and hoping they can assimilate the playbook
Yes on Dez, no on risk
Orton does not look anything like the guy who will take 1st contract year off. Nor does Doom. They both look like players. Marshall is a flake.
money doesn't change people just ask albert haynesworth who was already asking for a trade after one season
If Marshall gets paid he will be a happy camper until he starts disagreeing with the way the offense is going or with his role in it. Money does not change attitudes (at least not for long). Brandon will be Brandon. He has had one of the best receivers in the league (Rod Smith) giving him advice on how he can become the best and get his fat contract and he hasn’t really taken that advice and run with it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Brandon and would love to see him as a Bronco but I don’t think a payday will change who Marshall is. He is a WR and he also has a bit of Diva in him. The first sign of struggles on the offense or if he isn’t getting the ball he will start to complain and the Team first attitude will go out the window.

once he gets paid like he should ,he will be happy. He is D cordinators nitemare.
live and die blue and orange
disagree with the "once he gets paid, he'll be happy"
Marshall himself has said that he has his goals for his football career, once he hit that 100 catch season, his production dropped, and he suddenly couldn’t practice because the cold air made it difficult to breath and he suddenly developed a hamstring injury that made him want to save himself for the playoffs, ignoring the fact that if the team didn’t win the game he wanted to skip they wouldn’t make the playoffs.
Doesn’t sound like he’ll suddenly become a team player just because he gets the money

I think it is rare....
to have the same best player in every game throughout the year.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
I wonder how many of those that constantly defend McD....
would have wanted him for the head coach is we said a year ago that we were going to hire McD and he would trade Cutler, Marshall, Hillis, and Scheff for a bunch of picks and Orton? Because that is essentially what has been defended by many on this site (assuming that most get their wish and we trade Marshall, Hillis, and Sceff for a bunch of picks).
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
McD would have been assassinated
But, I’m not trying to start another war, and McD is already here so we cant go back now. We can only hope there will be a good outcome to his madness, and it should start by resigning Bmarsh.
KINGS WILL BE 09-10 CHAMPIONS
Pardon me - I must have been hibernating...;-)
we were going to hire McD and he would trade Cutler, Marshall, Hillis, and Scheff for a bunch of picks and Orton?
When did we do that? Ah – never. Good to know.

Did I miss a memo someplace?
I thought the only person who has been traded to date is Cutler.
Will Marshall, Hillis and/or Scheffler be here in 2010? That remains to be seen. Early in the season, McDaniels benched Marshall, and Marshall responded by coming back and having a 100 catch season. Scheffler was apparently benched for a detrimental, non-team attitude. Hillis has pretty much been invisible. For some reason, many fans have decided that these things mean those three will be gone (more so because of their own personal likes/dislikes than anything else). Perhaps they will, perhaps they won’t. Point is, until an announcement is made to the contrary, all three are still Broncos.
The one constant that I believe has been seen with McDaniels is that he does not tend to follow conventional wisdom in his approach.

I don't think we are disagreeing
and same with Emmett Smith. I was saying that many seem to be thinking and discussing what they are worth for draft picks. It makes me cringe. Trading proven NFL players for a bunch of “who knows if they will ever turn out” draft picks sends us into a 3 year rebuilding mode. I hope McD doesn’t trade all of these guys…but if you read this site, it is the constant buzz. At a minimum, I would want proven NFL players back as opposed to a bunch of draft picks, or a combination of players and picks (a la the cutler trade).

That I can totally agree with
I dislike trading vets for draft day possibles also.

Which is why when I talked about who I thought we should keep
(shameless plug for one of my posts LOL), between the active roster, the practice squad and the injury lists, I advocated having only 7 open slots for free agents and draftees.
Keep as many of the current roster as possible to provide continuity and help out the learning curve.

yeah we would have been pissed
but when your QB asks for a trade even before McD is hired and then gets pissed when his buddy Bates leaves, then won’t return phone calls from the Owner and Coach and won’t even meet with them without Bus Cook then yeah trade the clown. McD didn’t come in with plans to trade anybody but if they aren’t going to buy into his system to win then they stop being part of the team by their own choice.
Those who hate McD for trading Cutler must want a team where Cutler is involved on hiring of the coaches and coordinators cause that is what is happening in Chicago. When did Cutler become Peyton Manning and when did Marshall become Rod Smith?
Cutler was hard to deal with...
but in retrospect, I don’t hate McD for trading Cutler as I have pointed out. I believe I was wrong on that one and McD was right. But when we start trading all of our best offensive players (at least were the best at some point within the last 2 years), then on the whole, questions need to be asked of McD.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
Look at Cutler's stats
Was he better then Orton this year? Doubt that. And we got a LOAD of picks from that trade. It was a steal. And Cutler is yet to prove he can win.
As far as Rod Smith vs Marshall
I think that is an interesting question. I don’t know how many people outside of Bronco fandom would take Smith over Marshall at this point in their career. I’d take Smith, but I wonder if those more removed from the situation would agree. But I don’t think you have to be considered the best receiver in Bronco history (as Smith was) to be considered a keeper.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
I agree you don't have to be the best in Bronco history to be considered a keeper
but you do have to show a love for the franchise and a desire to stay. Rod may not be the best WR based on stats but everything about him, personality, work ethic, attitude, humility, all contributed to him being one of the best and IMO best Broncos WR.
I don't think you need to love the franchise...
to stay. This is a business where being cut in the middle of a contract is very real. They have a short time to make money. Players are concerned with their financial security first….and I can’t blame them. A franchise doesn’t love the player anymore then the franchise thinks the player can help them win that year. Nor do I think they need a desire to stay. I am guessing their have been many players in the NFL that have played well for teams even if they wished they played for another team. But when the attitude affects the locker room, that is a different story….and that may be the issue that gets him booted out of town.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
you may not love the franchise or choose it over other teams but you have to show a loyalty
and not let your desire to be somewhere else affect your teammates or the locker room.

I would love to resign Marshall if I knew this was where he really wanted to be.
He was even asked by several reporters if he wanted to be a Bronco next year and he couldn’t even bring himself to say YES. If money was the only factor then why wouldn’t he say to the media in interviews that he wanted to stay a Bronco? Fact is, like Bena said… He does not want to be a Bronco.
Here is the link
The one thing I will say though is that he is handling the situation a little better (more maturely) than he did last year
and way better than Cutler ever even attempted to.
Again... Marshall's actions were NOT the way to get paid!
His actions and attitude completely sabotageD team chemistry and his own marketvalue . He’s done ALL this to his team and himself. Bye Brandon! Hello Dez! BTW Dez, leave any DIVA attitude at home, we’re tired of it.
For Haze/Johnnystar, “I always appreciated the game Brandon brings, but I despise the games he plays”. Feel free to quote me on that point.
Wow, has his topic really generated some intersting debate. Where’s Boydy when you need him? Lol! I always enjoy his perspective too!!

Marshall's value
Shanahan considered cutting Marshall if trading him wasn’t possible, according to an article in the MSM, so even Shanahan wasn’t as enamored of him as many here.
I like Marshall’s abilities and I always have. I recall getting into an argument in the 2006 pre-season over his potential, which I saw as high. However, at this point I’m advocating a trade, and for obvious reasons. I consider the cries for keeping him to be attributable to the endowment effect.
The only question for me at this point is — how much?
And the answer isn’t going to make people happy. Here’s what some of the DP’s sports journalists think:
“-..a look at Marshall’s performance in the 2009 season reveals why not every team in the league is doing handstands for the opportunity to surrender high-value draft picks to get him.”
B-Marsh might be a Beast, but he’s not worth breaking the bank. …
The man is a possession receiver who lacks true game- breaking speed.
Unfortunately, Marshall’s market value may not be what the Broncos hope.
Marshall still has value but he has dis-value, too, and don’t relish the prospect of rebuilding the offense on such an unstable foundation. I’d be much happier with Dez Bryant, whom I consider to be a superior WR at this stage in his career. I’d also be happy if our 1st pick wasn’t a WR, since there are a number of promising WRs in the draft.
My emphasis is team-building, as always. I’d much prefer seeing us convert Marshall’s value back into picks and addressing weak areas on the team.
MORE LEGWOLD
Marshall doesn’t seem nearly as comfortable reeling in the ball and making the catch with his back to the quarterback, which is why most of his work in the Denver offense has come on routes when he is facing the quarterback and can look the ball in instead of turning his head to look back while running.
It’s also why you don’t see him working the sidelines much in places where he has to go get the ball and get his feet down in limited space.
That’s why 65 of Marshall’s catches this season, with runs after the catch included, went for 10 yards or fewer. That’s 64.4 percent of his receiving plays. And 30 of his catch-and-run plays went for 5 yards or fewer, including two for negative yardage. That’s 29.7 percent and basically amounts to a running play.
Not to drown in the numbers, but Marshall had just 10 receiving plays this season — the catch and run — for 21 yards or more, and half of his 10 touchdowns came on plays of 5 yards or fewer.
That says “possession receiver” to many in the NFL, and possession receivers don’t reel in the mega dollars. Some personnel evaluators question Marshall’s ability to catch the ball in downfield traffic.
no goats, no glory.
