With the 10th (or 11th) pick in the draft the Broncos select...
Thanks to Jay Cutler getting picked off every other pass, the Broncos have a very high draft selection this year and can go many different ways with how to use it. Here are some of the options.
Rolando McClain: A very smart football player who is very physical. Tremendous upside. Comparisons to Ray Lewis may be a stretch but he has that ability. Hard to imagine him as a bust. At worst he's an average ILB.
Dez Bryant: Great hands, good size and closing speed. Some say he's a better prospect than Crabtree was last year and he had an impressive rookie year (albeit rather short). projected to be a number 1 receiver. Could replace Marshall if he's traded.
Sam Bradford: It may be a stretch that he falls past the teams with QB issues like the Redskins, Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo but if he does would McDaniels be able to resist. Deadly accurate, underrated arm strength. Coming off a shoulder injury that kept him out for the season at OU.
Joe Haden: With Champ and Goodman not getting any younger at 32 each the Broncos could get their future CB. He was a shutdown at Florida and scouts say he might be able to do the same at the next level. And with Champ showing him the ropes we might just have another HOF on our hands.
Trade Down: There is always a team that wants to trade up and get "their guy". The Broncos could trade down to the late first round and use that pick on NT Dan Williams or OG Mike Iupati both of whom are favorites around MHR and who can argue they are both great players.

I voted Bryant
But if McClain is there, by all means, pick him. I am just having doubts about his availability because he is such a talented player. For me this is how it would go:
1) Rolando McClain
2) Dez Bryant
3) Joe Haden
4) Trade Down
5) Sam Bradford
Eddie Royal will have a breakout season in 2010. Count on it.
Bradford
I think our style of offense would give Bradoford the best chance to succeed. He plays in a spread which is what McD ran over in New England in 07. I would have a tough time choosing between Bradford and Haden and Bryant.
My player orders would be
1) McClain (Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s gone tho)
2) Bradford (could be very successful in Denver)
3) Haden
4) Dez Bryant (he moves up if we trade Marshall)
And trading down depends on how far and who will still be there.
I voted trade down
because I don’t think McClain will be there for us. IF he is, however, I reserve the right to change my vote to snag him to be our next great ILB.
Trade down
We need the picks. However, how about CJ Spiller. Great running back and returner. We would have a great 1-2 punch.
I agree with the masses
Trade down if McClain isnt there. Although, the press that Iupati is getting could peg him right in our range.
You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?
You know where I wanna go? I'll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called Aspen
No way will Iupati be rated a top 12 prospect (unless teams see him as a tackle).
Look back at the best Guards from recent years:
Hutchinson – 17
Faneca – 26
Eric Wood (C/G) – 28
Grubbs – 29
Davin Joseph – 23
Mankins – 32
Iupati will probably end up being picked from about 18 (PIT) onwards (IMO).
Good stuff Timimus, excellent!
"But I hate the way our identity has changed..Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth." --Brian Urlacher
Could he not be a tackle?
I’m not qualified to answer that, but I know Brandon Alberts (I think the name is right) went to Kansas City quite high. I also think he’s getting more coverage than any guard in as long as I remember so having him go above Hutch at 17 doesn’t seem like too big a reach.
hypothetical trade down
Hypothetically speaking, if we do trade Marshall for a late first rounder somewhere in the 20 – 25 range then we snag Iupati with that and then trade the 10th down to another pick in that range and get Dan Williams. People on the boards keep talking about our o line problems but a bigger problem is our run defense. A dominant NT can really fix up the run D immediately.
Hypothetical Draft:
20th pick – Iupati
25th pick – Williams
Then we might have to hope to see if Pouncey falls to us at our second round pick or try and get a higher 2nd round pick in the trade down or the marshall trade.
thoughts?
I don't stronly disagree....
But an Oline that allows our offense to sustain drives and win field position helps our D more than a NT in my opinion. I also veer away from NT so far because we don’t know what we have in C. Baker. Baker may not pan out, and if we draft a NT high then I assume McD isn’t sold on him, but I don’t want to spend a high draft pick on him when we might have a great player waiting in the wings. We have no players with any potential waiting in the wings at G/C (possibly Olsen I suppose, but even if he pans out we still have holes there)
Trade down, or up?
Just a thought, but assuming that Marshall takes his drama somewhere else next year, we would probably have two first round picks, along with a plethora of others. There is also the possibility that we might not work a deal with Doom. With Nolan in Miami I can see the possibility of the Dolphins going after Elvis. Could that be another 1st and 3rd situation? Or, perhaps, a trade for a starter level player, plus a pick? I don’t want to lose Doom any more than anyone else, but the price to keep him may just be too high.
So, If we lose both Marshall and Doom, with perhaps a few more picks along the way for Hillis and/or Sheffler, we could find ourselves in a situation with a boat load of picks. In that case, trading down for more picks would not make sense. Picks could be traded for proven players, and there are a few out there who might be attractive, or they could be packaged to move up in the draft. Could this be the year that Denver makes a move for one of the top picks? If so, who? How would Suh or McCoy look in Orange and Blue? I can’t really see us moving up for a QB or OT, but either Suh or McCoy might be tempting to anchor one side of our D-Line.
Both of our guys that played NT this past year could also move to the 5 Technique position.
Chris Baker has also done the same in college The versatility of the DL in a 3-4 is very helpful for personnel.
It is very possible that we could have a boatload of picks this year: Say 1&3 for BM; possibly the same for Doom or maybe a 2,3 this year and a 2 next year. a 4 for Schef and a 5 for Hillis. This is my guess.
My sense about Dan Williams is that he could play both NT and DE. He may rotate in as DE. Later when he has more NFL pt, rotate in at NT. More picks could insure getting 2 pretty good OL and 1 more for depth. Also would need both OLB and ILB as well as a CB and 2 RBs. We could use up a boatload of picks.
Good work on this post. Thanks for your time and energy.
