Wink gets the Call - Martindale to lead Broncos defense

The Denver Broncos on Thursday promoted Don "Wink" Martindale to defensive coordinator, it was announced. Martindale coached the club's linebackers in 2009 after spending five years in that role with the Oakland Raiders.

"We are excited to name Wink Martindale our defensive coordinator," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "Wink is the perfect fit to lead our defense after earning the respect of our players and coaching staff for the job he did this past year working with our linebackers.

"Defensively, we will keep our system consistent in terms of the scheme and will play an aggressive, physical brand of football. Most importantly, we want to continue to improve. Wink holds his players to a very high standard, both on the field and in the meeting room, and he makes them better. He is highly regarded within our organization, and we look forward to him leading our defense."

Before beginning his NFL coaching career with the Raiders in 2004, the 46-year-old Martindale worked as the defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky University in 2003 and helped the Hilltoppers rank sixth in Division I-AA in yards per game allowed. He also worked as a defensive coordinator at Western Illinois University in 1999 after coaching in various defensive roles at the University of Cincinnati (1996-98) and the University of Notre Dame (1994-95).

Star-divide

Martindale spent six years coaching at the high school level in Ohio after beginning his coaching career in 1986 at Defiance College, where he played linebacker and earned a bachelor's degree in business education.

As the Broncos' linebackers coach in 2009, Martindale oversaw a unit that helped Denver rank seventh in the NFL in total yards per game allowed (315.0) and third in the league in passing yards per game allowed (186.3). He helped OLB/DE Elvis Dumervil become the first league sack champion in Broncos history with the fourth-year player posting a club-record 17 sacks to earn Pro Bowl honors in his first season at linebacker.

In addition, ILB D.J. Williams was named a Pro Bowl alternate under Martindale in 2009 after leading the club with 122 tackles that ranked sixth in the AFC according to press box statistics.

An all-state linebacker at Trotwood-Madison High School in Trotwood, Ohio, Martindale was born on May 19, 1963, in Dayton, Ohio. He is married to Laura, and the couple has one daughter (Cassie) and one son (Ty).

I like it

I really do, I was actually excited when McD hired him as LB coach last year. I have a feeling he will do well because it is his first DC in the NFL.

Coaching thoughts:
   Martindale = DC
   Barone = O Line
   Bills guy = RB
Eric Campbell / Reese Morgan = TE
   Rocky Seto = LB

I am on FIRE so far =)

Good luck Don.

Does this mean we won’t have to change systems and terminology? If so, that would seem like a +.

by plainview88 on Jan 28, 2010 1:05 PM MST up reply actions

The NFL is all about big plays. Big plays make average teams like Philly into winners.

McDaniels needs more big plays from his O. The dink and dunk approach only works when you have a Super Star QB that consistently makes great passes – again and again and again. Orton is decent, but he is not that guy. So we need to go for bigger plays more often and Orton showed me enough in 2009 to suggest he deserves the chance to take more shots down the field.

Let's hope Wink was a sponge in 2009...

And took some good notes while Nolan was here… soaking up as much as he could.

Regarding a new system and terminology don’t we wish we had an answer? I’m sure your questions was rhetorical… as is mine ; )

McD actually talked about this, and the system and terminology are going to be the same. How it is used will probably change in degree, after the lousy finish.

It would seem to me that some consistency in system and terminology would/should be very good. I don’t expect everything to stay the same as 2009, but we’ve done far too much system overhall-ings the past five years. It shows, it doesn’t work and it sucks.

I’m cool with this hire.

Just having the same guy around two years in a row should be a massive improvement in consistency. I get the feeling the vets were really concerned about that, and that may partly be why they spoke out about wanting Wink to get the nod.

Oh crap, did I just use wink and nod in the same sentence?

"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

Touche... I should read a little bit more closer...

Before responding to a comment : )

I’m glad to hear the system and terminology will be the same… the cynic in me would like to hear a statement from Wink. If nothing else just to witness how much on the same page McDaniels and Wink appear.

Speculating a little bit, but I do have an impression McDaniels will have more influence on the defensive side of the ball (especially now that Nolan is gone although we do not know what sort of influence McDaniels had on the defense in 2009 so it is hard to compare or speculate).

He did start out with the Patriots by coaching the defensive backs and being a defensive assistant. Weren’t those defenses ranked in the top 10 of the NFL? If so, this would be a good sign at a minimum.

no terminological change -- is my guess

At least that was the argument I was selling before the announcement.

Minor adjustments could be implemented over time but there’s no reason that I can think of for changing the terms already in use.

I see the changes as being mainly in the area of defensive play calling or having a new DC calling those plays, besides coordinating.

Are you insinuating that chubby people don’t have self-discipline. That would be a mischaracterization. Also what more respect does Babe Ruth have to earn. Best baseball player ever. He was a great Pitcher and a great Hitter.

"No more my bad just make the play"-McJedi

by RockyMountainThunder on Jan 28, 2010 3:46 PM MST up reply actions

I am insinuating nothing

I am telling you flat out: I have never met or heard of a single person who truly WANTS to be fat. That they are anyway demonstrates obvious lack of self-discipline. It really kills me when you see an obese woman with earrings or a corpulent man sporting a moustache. They obviously care what they look like but clearly lack the willpower to do anything about it.

by warmick on Jan 28, 2010 4:16 PM MST up reply actions

Have you ever been addicted to anything?

I know many obese people that are very self-disciplined but they suffer from an addiction to food. Similar to addiction to alcohol or cigarettes. The only difference is you can cut out alcohol and cigarettes completely from your life and survive. But being addicted to food you have to ingest that which you are addicted to on a daily basis.

People suffer from real diseases such as depression and physical ailments that can compound the problem. I am not making excuses for them but I do have a great deal of compassion. It seems overweight people are the last group it’s PC to make fun of.

"No more my bad just make the play"-McJedi

by RockyMountainThunder on Jan 28, 2010 4:36 PM MST up reply actions

Who is "making fun of them"?

Your addiction analogy doesn’t really hold water. I would argue quitting smoking is harder as you have to abandon it all together unlike eating (and drinking) where you can still indulge in moderation. Your statement “I’m not making excuses for them” is very telling. Apparently you DO feel some level of blame is justified. As for compassion: Being obese must be so very hard both physically and emotionally. I am overflowing with compassion. What I do not have is respect.

I don't know whether the person who would benefit the most read it

but I sure got nothing out of it. Here’s the summary without the words I don’t know and can’t understand deleted:

Childhood obesity has become epidemic over the past 30 years. The First Law is routinely interpreted to imply that weight gain is secondary to increased caloric intake and/or decreased energy expenditure, two behaviors that have been documented during this interval; nonetheless, lifestyle interventions are notoriously ineffective at promoting weight loss. Obesity is characterized by. is usually thought to be secondary to obesity, it can instead be primary, due to dysfunction. Obesity is also a state of resistance, in which defective signal promotes excess energy intake, to maintain normal energy expenditure. Insulin and share a common central signaling pathway, and it seems that insulin functions as an antagonist. Suppressing insulin resistance, with ensuing reduction of caloric intake, increased spontaneous activity, and improved quality of life. also interferes with dopamine clearance in the ventral area and nucleus, promoting increased food reward. Accordingly, the First Law of can be reinterpreted, such that the behaviors of increased caloric intake and decreased energy expenditure are secondary to obligate weight gain. This weight gain is driven by the state, through three mechanisms: energy partitioning into tissue; interference with signal; and interference with extinction of the response to food.

Either way, it is meaningless to me. This I DO know: Obesity is caused by too much food and too little exercise which, when it comes to kids and adolescents, is a direct result of junk food and a sedentary life style. Burning calories by playing sports on the computer doesn’t match the energy invested when playing on a field. Here are the words I cut out

Thermodynamics hyperinsulinemia. hyperinsulinemia autonomic leptin leptin transduction leptin endogenous leptin ameliorates leptin. Hyperinsulinemia dopamine ventral tegmental accumbens, Thermodynamics hyperinsulinemic adipose leptin transduction;

fail

dude. a lot more goes into weight and body shape than ‘self-control’

People are healthier at a stable weight than constantly stressing their bodies on the latest diet—especially if they are predisposed to being overweight. Your Nazi camp comment crossed a line, but here’s the answer: those people were in a ketotic state. Once your body consumes all its fat reserves, it starts consuming muscles. Then it starts consuming internal organs. Ketosis technically starts when it stops getting carbs to convert into glucose and instead has to use its stored materials. Some of those people were probably genetically predisposed to being fat. That doesn’t mean they’re going to remain fat when their body has to consume itself for them to retain some semblance of life.

On to the mustache/earrings. Just because someone cares about their appearance does not mean they care that their appearance conforms to all the social norms that determine the still-ridiculously-subjective term ‘beauty’. Maybe a corpulent person thinks that body shape is the coolest one out there, along with their earrings and mustache. You’re analyzing beauty in terms of sex—kind of like an animal. The human gene pool is diverse enough and big enough that people no longer have to worry about reproduction. That doesn’t mean we don’t, but trying to conform to some societal standard of ‘beauty’ is exactly that. When girls develop anorexia trying to look like the latest Cosmo cover girl, or guys take steroids trying to get the muscles of the latest beefcake to appear on Jersey Shore, the main drive behind that is attracting the opposite sex. For what ultimate purpose? Reproduction. Clearly you share that view of ‘beauty’ or ‘attractiveness’ or what it means to ‘care about one’s appearance’, if subconsciously.

I like how (above) he continues to use terrible argumentation.

He cropped out all the scientific terms from a summary to…make his point? And then assumed the summary backed up what he assumes is fact about weight gain (it said the opposite).

Sounds exactly like Colin “King of the Strawmen” Cowherd to me.

How did the defenses do when he coached them in College?

The best part about this, though, is that McD listened to his players who, apparently, lobbied for this guy. Plus it proves that not everyone hates and can’t work with McD.

It takes neither courage nor intelligence to cheer for a team only when that team wins. The true test of a fan's mettle is the same as it is for a player: Were you there when you were needed?

According to one source I read

In 2003 at W. Kentucky his defense ranked 6th in Div. 1-AA. Kind of hard to truly assess. Lot of factors go into being a successful defensive coordinator. Greg Robinson had a lot of success here but hasn’t really been able to do so anywhere else.

I do know this. He coached some really good LB with the Raiders and helped invigorate A. Davis’ career here.

I feel kinda bad that I ruin all the serious posts with this

pointless drivel. But it’s fun for me, and you guys are funny.

My entire fanpost was pointless drivel. Feel free to ruin that one. hahaha jk

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

no harv, we love you for it

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

Socrates was once executed for 'trolling'.
^Needs explaining: don't call someone asking uncomfortable, slightly antagonistic questions trolls. In all odds they probably just want to learn. It's real easy to differentiate a 'Socratic' post from a trolling one (unless you're a resident of WCG).
^Needs further explaining: I have yet to post anything on WCG, don't worry, I'm not trying to rationalize anything I've done. I've just lurked over there and man, they are the model of post-peloponnesian war Athens.

Glad he is on board as the DC.

My guess is that he will continue what Nolan has began and enlarge on it. I expect more of the attacking defense we saw last year plus some. Give him a little time, he’ll be a good one.

Harv, I enjoyed your pic with Wink and Nolan. I used to think Nolan was a big guy.

Just WInk and Nod

and enjoy the magnificence that Martindale will provide. Generally, McDaniels does make wise decisions and I think this is another one. Now it’s time to enjoy some good NBA action. Go Mavs against the Suns!

Best of luck to you coach Wink!

I heard he is potentially more aggressive than Nolan was. Here’s hoping for a 2010 defensive comprised of CHAOS!

Good pick

Anytime you get endorsed by Brian Dawkins you must be doing something right. So I’m on board with this one.

Welp, this just Peeses me off

I was wrong that we would hire Pees. I’m disappointed that McDaniels was unwilling to allow Bronco fans the pleasure of neverending Pees puns.

Although Wink Martindale does offer some fun.

Because it's become tiresome
