Stedtfeld's Broncos Mock Draft 10.0 - Something a little different

I will do this a little different this time.  I will take each pick, and name the top 3 players I think we should get at that spot.  If our first option isn't there, go with the next one...(be prepared to look at 30 players)

TRADE ALERT

Baltimore receives: Brandon Marshall, WR

Denver receives: 25th pick overall, 88th pick overall

TRADE ALERT

Washington receives: Peyton Hillis, FB

Denver receives: 5th round pick

TRADE ALERT

Cincinnati receives: Tony Scheffler, TE

Denver receives: 84th pick overall

Free Agency

I think our first priority in the offseason should be to keep Dumervil.  We need someone to generate a pass rush and he's one of the best in the league at doing that.  He is not as one-dimensional as some think.  He can stop the run pretty well, even though his specialty is getting to the QB.  Also, we should sign Orton for another couple of years at least.  McDaniels apparently like Kuper, so he should be signed, along with Matt Prater, who is/will be one of the better kickers in the league.

As for non-Bronco signings, the main two I would like to see are Chester Taylor from Minnesota, and Ryan Pickett from Green Bay.  Pickett did a nice job playing the nose tackle position over in GB, and Taylor is a versatile RB that still has some left in the tank.

Our Picks

10th pick overall

25th pick overall

45th pick overall

80th pick overall

84th pick overall

88th pick overall

4th round pick

5th round pick

6th round pick

7th round pick

With the 10th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos select...

#1

Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama

Rolando McClain is a beast of a linebacker and could help our defense, especially stopping the run, for the next decade or so.  I am with many Broncos fans in thinking this, but the problem is I think other people (teams) might have that thinking..like KC, Cleveland, oakland.  I am very worried McClain will not be at 10 or 11 so we should be prepared for that...Also, I love elvisalex's idea of trading with the Jets to get David Harris.  The man is a proven ILB and would get rid of our need for a great young ILB.

#2

Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State

Dez Bryant will be a very smart pick if Marshall is traded/let go, and I think he will be.  I can see Bryant being one of the top receivers in the league if a few years.  I know not all will agree with this, but that's just what I see in him.  He is a solid route runner, he has great hands, can grab jump balls fantastically, and is great after the catch (he returned some punts at Oklahoma State).  I, for one, would be very happy during the draft if Bryant popped up on the screen with a Broncos logo by his name.  I think this would be a big step to improving our offense which was definitely nothing special in 2009.

#3

Joe Haden, CB, Florida

Joe Haden is the best corner in this draft, and it would be nice for us to pick him up.  Champ Bailey and Andre Goodman are both getting older, so we should think about a replacement for them.  We already have Alphonso Smith (who I have much faith in), so to get another young corner that can learn behind the best in the league would be awesome.  However, I might rather trade down with this pick if McClain and Bryant are gone, because there are other talented CBs we can get later in the draft.

With the 25th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos select...

#1

Maurkice Pouncey, C, Florida

Center is one of our biggest needs, and Maurkice Pouncey is the best in this draft class.  I know many here have talked about getting Iupati, but I think getting Pouncey is more important than Iupati.  First of all, Iupati is not as great as some at MHR have made him seem.  He is still very raw, and will probably be good in the NFL, but he's not Jesus or anything.  Maurkice Pouncey would almost definitely be our "franchise" center.  Centers have been known to be able to play guard more than the other way around, so Pouncey could even play at guard if needed there.

#2

Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee

Our defensive line needs help as well, and Dan Williams would more than help.  He could be a great nose tackle in the 3-4, and anchor our line for many many years.  He could draw double teams and collapse pockets, as well as stop the run.  I like Williams more than Terrence Cody, because Cody is just a big ball of fat rolling at you.  I wouldn't want a guy that gets tired after 5 plays, then either sits out or is dominated.

#3

Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho

I do think Pouncey is more important than Iupati, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't LOVE to get this guy.  Like I said, he is raw, but he could become one of the better offensive guards in the NFL.  I really hope we can get both Iupati and Pouncey... Imagine a left side like this:

Clady Iupati Pouncey

Tell me that wouldn't be dominant, especially in a year or two.

With the 45th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos select...

#1

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech

Obviously if we pick Bryant, Thomas wouldn't be the selection here.  But I love Thomas if we get someone besides Dez.  He is a big deep threat, which is much needed (obviously we must fix the O-line first).  Please McXanders, take a long hard look at Thomas, he is a beast.

#2

Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest

Again, we should get a corner somewhere in this draft, preferably in the first 3 rounds.  Ghee is a talented CB that may be able to take over for the Champ, after being taught by the Champ.  One of my favorite CBs in this draft.

#3

Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern

I am actually very high on Wootton, but this is where I think trading down would benefit us.  I think Wootton could be had later in the 2nd round, and if we trade our 1st for a later first and a 2nd (or something like that) we could get Wootton with our new 2nd rounder.  Wootton should be able to be a DE in the 3-4, and from what I've seen, excel at the position.

With the 80th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos select...

#1

Dexter McCluster, RB/WR, Ole Miss

I've been riding the McCluster train since I started doing mocks this season, and it's still chuggin for me.  McCluster could be that "home run hitter" player who has a chance to make some huge plays with the ball in his hands in open field.  He could take the responsibilities of kick/punt returner from Eddie Royal's hands, allowing him to focus on being a receiver.  McCluster has been climbing draft boards so much lately, I'm hoping he doesn't enter the 2nd round, because I probably wouldn't want to take him there.

#2

Darryl Sharpton, ILB, Miami

Sharpton is a beast of a man, and he looks like he could succeed at the next level.  This pick doesn't come of course if Rolando McClain is picked at 10/11.  Sharpton is a great alternative and it would be cool to have two Miami players for our ILBs.

#3

Jon Asamoah, OG, Illinois

Jon Asamoah is a big guy, and could fit our O-line well.  Earlier I stated my opinion that it is more important that we get center Maurkice Pouncey than OG Mike Iupati.  If that is the thinking in Denver, we may not end up with Iupati, but a Asamoah would be a great alternative IMO.

With the 84th pick in the 2010 NFL draft , the Denver Broncos select...

#1

Alterraun Verner #1 of the UCLA Bruins runs after an interception against Denarius Moore #6 of the Tennessee Volunteers on September 12, 2009 at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA

Verner is my favorite CB in the draft, considering where he will be taken.  Verner seems like he will do well in the NFL, and I just have a feeling McDaniels sees him the same way.  Verner may not be able to come in and instantly make an impact (or maybe he will..), but with the Champ mentoring him, I feel like he could do a great job for the Broncos.

#2

Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas

Dezmon seems like a lock to be a solid player in the NFL.  He probably won't be the next Jerry Rice, but he should be able to start and do pretty well.  It would be nice for us to add to the depth at receiver, though we don't need it.

#3

Dan Lefevour, QB, Central Michigan

Let me just say right away that I don't think we should pick a QB in the first 4-5 rounds, unless there is a guy McDaniels REALLY feels is the next Tom Brady.

With the 88th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos select...

#1

JD Walton, C, Baylor

JD would be a good option for if we missed out on Pouncey.  It is very important to improve our interior line, so we shouldn't wait too long to pick for it.

#2

Cameron Sheffield, OLB, Troy

Sheffield can be an OLB in the 3-4, and he's pretty good.  He's strong and is a good pass rusher that explodes off the line of scrimmage.

#3

Vince Oghobaase, DE, Duke

If we can not get Wootton, we should look at Vince Oghobaase.  He could be an animal at the 3-4 DE position, getting 51 total takcles, 9 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks last season.

4th Round

#1

Micah Johnson, ILB, Kentucky

The other alternative to Rolando McClain.  Emmett Smith did a nice job explaining why ILB is one of our biggest needs this offseason in his post Linebacker: The Broncos Scheme and Needs. We need someone to come in for Andra Davis.

#2

Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota

Decker is a great receiver that catches everything you throw at him...Ok there may be a little bias here, me being a Gophers fan, but Decker is still a pretty good prospect.

#3

Ben Tate, RB, Auburn

Ben Tate is a very durable, strong runner who explodes through holes and keeps driving.  He is also a receiving threat out of the backfield.

5th Round

#1

AJ Wallace, CB, Penn State

Solid corner for Penn State and a good kick returner.  Move to next option if Verner, Ghee, Haden, etc. are picked.

#2

Cam Thomas, DT, North Carolina

Here's the problem with this pick: I have no idea where Cam Thomas will go.  For all I know, he could go from the 3rd round to the 6th.  If we can get him here, I'd be happy, but I would definitely not count on it.

#3

Arthur Moats, DE, James Madison

Moats can/will translate to the 3-4 OLB, because he's a tweener.  He may be average in the run game but he knows how to get to the QB, and is fast.  (Sounds like someone, huh?)

6th Round

#1

Alric Arnett, WR, West Virginia

Arnett is a good 1st receiver that is a leader on and off the field.  He has a great size/speed combo and a big-play ability.

#2

Legarrette Blount, RB, Oregon

Blount is a very tough runner that has taken a huge hit on his stock from his attitude as a person.  I think if McDaniels believes that he has/can fix that, he should get him.

#3

Brandon James, RB/KR, Florida

If we don't get McCluster, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get James.  Since this pick is in the 6th round, it wouldn't be too bad to get a guy that mainly is a kick/punt returner.  He could have some offensive plays as well, to try to make a big play with his speed.

7th Round

#1

Chris McCoy, DE, Middle Tennessee State

Another guy that may have to switch to 3-4 OLB in the NFL.  A great pass rusher that has some potential to be a solid player.

#2

Kerry Meier, WR, Kansas

Kerry Meier is an interesting prospect.  He switched from QB to play some WR, and did well.  I think he could be a good 7th round pick.

#3

Dedrick Epps, TE, Miami

Versitile player, can both block and receive pretty well.  Big guy but is still pretty fast.

I was just thinking about Bal

This might be crazy for Bal to do but could we trade marshall for Haloti Ngata? Straight up? Just a thought…

HILLIS...where are you???

by robbo650 on Jan 30, 2010 8:55 AM MST reply actions

Some new names

Let’s agree our major needs are stopping the run and running the ball, esp in short yardage and red zone. Assume Marshall and Sheffler are traded for an extra 1st and 3rd. What about the following picks:
1a. Rolando McClain, ILB
1b. Maurkice Pouncey, C
2. Mike Johnson, G
3a. Jordan Shipley, WR/KR
3b. Cam Thomas, NT
If McClain is already off the board, I would take Mike Iupati as he can play G or RT based on Senior Bowl workouts. That would help the offensive line immediately. Then, in round 2, instead of Mike Johnson, I would take Daryl Washington, ILB.

by HoustonTom on Jan 30, 2010 11:11 AM MST reply actions

There is not way Blount

Drops to the 6th. From everything I have read he has done nothing but impress the scouts with his play and attitude all week at the the Senior Bowl

Dexter McCluster is going to be a 2nd round pick. I am 100% positive on this one. I would be very happy to see him taken with our 2nd round pick because he is weapon that McDaniels can use all over the field. If you can get this guy in space he will be very hard to bring down. He only weighed in at 165lbs but he runs with power and is not afraid to lower his shoulder. He could be our KR, PR, Change of pace RB, and he is a pretty good WR also. He is the SPEED threat Denvers offense is missing right now. This guy will probably run a 4.3 40 at the combine and that speed translates onto the field. I love this kid and want him to be a Bronco

I agree with everything you said

I’ve realized lately that McCluster will probably be a 2nd rounder..that makes Brandon Marshall to Bucs for two 2nd rounders look like a better idea.

Eddie Royal will have a breakout season in 2010. Count on it.

by stedtfeld on Jan 30, 2010 1:09 PM MST up reply actions

I'd take the Bucs #3 overall and trade it back to someone for a later 1 and a 2nd rounder

Trading back to the #6 overall would score us an extra 2nd. But if we traded back further to like the Patriots at 22, we’d get two of their 2nd rounders and the #22nd overall. If nobody bit on the trade price, we could just lower our asking price and accept less, but surely if we only charged a 3rd rounder to trade back… we’d surely have multiple willing partners and would still end up with a 1st and 3rd for Marshall.

All that said, the Bucs seem like a possibility, but I think the Jets and the Ravens are more likely because they are a ready-to-win-now teams that lack a go to guy at receiver. I think rebuilding teams like the Bucs are more likely to draft and develop, whereas teams like Jets and Ravens don’t really have the time to take that risk.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Jan 31, 2010 2:03 AM MST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind the #3 pick to pick up Berry or McCoy

But I don’t think that trading back is going to be so easy. The last several years few teams have been willing to trade into the top 5, and I think this year would be harder since it is very probably the last year with no rookie cap in place. The guaranteed money that those players will demand would be tough to swallow if they somehow didn’t pan out.

Now, that being said, some team probably would think like me and trade up based on my title argument (Berry or McCoy). Could be risky, but might not be a bad move.

How about Tebow at 3?

by Kgrone on Jan 31, 2010 7:16 AM MST up reply actions

Absolutely not =)

I hate the idea of spending a first-round pick on a player who by nearly all accounts is going to hold a clip board for 2-3 years. I would never trade Brandon for the third overall pick to draft Tebow. Because the rookie cap will be in place by the next season football is played, Tebow would forever be the most expensiive bench warmer ever drafted.

I wouldn’t draft Berry or McCoy there either. We don’t need a QB or even a safety. If the team wants to get improve this year, we’re going to need help at linebacker and both lines.

As for money, there was only a $7.5M difference in the guaranteed money between the 7th and 3rd picks over a five year contract. So while I don’t exactly see the Eagles moving all the way up, a team like the Seahawks could easily jump over the Redskins, from #6 overall to the #3 so that they can grab Bradford before the Redskins do.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Jan 31, 2010 9:08 AM MST up reply actions

Lol...

Okay, Tebow was tongue in cheek. McCoy or Berry I’d be seriously okay with, though. Both should be great players, and although we are set at safety imo, I look at what Polamalu and Reed and Bdawk do for their respective defenses and would not turn down a chance to get an impact player of that caliber.

by Kgrone on Feb 4, 2010 7:38 AM MST up reply actions

I'm with you on the majority of these picks

If McClain was gone, I’d trade back from 10/11 to gain a 2nd rounder, thus grabbing both Lupati and Pouncey in round 1, then grab an ILB in late 2nd early 3rd.

I think we need more offensive line upgrades and depth than just one center and one guard.

Am I misunderstanding that if you get Ghee, you’d still get Verner?

Nice mock, I like the additional options you gave.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
