Horse Tracks 1/29/10 - Martindale becomes fifth Defensive Coordinator for Broncos in five seasons

DB - Martindale Promoted to Defensive Coordinator
DPP - Broncos name Don Martindale defensive coordinator - Mike Klis
"He was a great linebackers coach," Dumervil said minutes after McDaniels called him to inform him of Martindale's promotion. "He taught me a lot. This will be a great opportunity for him to show what he can do. Having a guy from in-house as defensive coordinator is really beneficial. He may be my fifth coordinator as a Denver Bronco, but then again, he really isn't because he already knows our personnel."

Matt Prater, pre-2009 season: Despised, lambasted, Josh McDaniels is derided for not replacing him.
Matt Prater, post-2009 season: Loved, praised, everone forgets the time when they called Josh McDaniels an idiot for not replacing him.

Good Morning and Thanks Doug

The war room has Doom as their #1 free agent...
Interesting. And probably right looking at the list.
BM is only the third WR according to them. Miles Austin and Vincent Jackson some out ahead. THAT is surprising.

That is shocking… But don’t underestimate Miles or Jackson. Those two are very good WRs and impact players.
While I think the war room is underrating BM, they are not overrating Miles or Jackson. San Diego and Dallas are lucky to have those guys.

I think you could make an argument that they had better or more important years this year than bmarsh but BM’s been doing it for 3 years now. You have to take that into consideration, surely…

They're worried about Character Issues with BMarsh but are ok with Vincent Jackson?
Sure Vincent Jackson is a better deep threat, but considering the offense McDaniels likes to run. It makes more sense to keep Brandon Marshall. Miles Austin looks like he’s all class so I’d welcome him. But not at BMarsh pricing.
Doom will want to get paid. If Denver steps up, I’m sure he’ll be thrilled to stay.
If Denver doesn’t show him the money this offseason, I can promise all of you he will be a VERY unhappy locker room guy in 2010.
If not for the stupid CBA mess, he would have picked the ideal time to have a career season.

Since the likely hood of a work stoppage is going to happen
I wouldn’t be surprised if they just threw Restricted Tags on all of them… It is a business after all
I think you are right, but I also think this will wreak havoc on Denver’ s locker room. Brian Dawkins won’t be able to put a happy face on the team if four or five starters (Orton, Elvis, Marshall, Kuper and maybe Scheff) are getting screwed by ownership.
I think you’d see Orton and Elvis taking turns punting the football at practice.

I agree with the prediction of bad juju if they do the prickish thing
But while Bowlen has made many “business decisions” in the past, he also has a history of doing what is right by his players and he isn’t going to jerk around Doom IMMHO.
"Precipitation, which side are you on?

I agree based on Bowlen's history that he's pretty fair
He allows John Lynch out of his contract when it was determined his playing time would be cut. That’s not the move of a “play out your contract/stickler” owner. I also don’t think Bowlen makes a public statement like “Brandon’s going to get paid” with his play earlier this year, if Bowlen were looking to cheap out with this uncapped year. I’m hoping he does right by the players as there looks to be a more balanced CBA at some point.
I'm glad we had this talk.

I hope you’re right. Even if Denver does hold all the cards with Doom, it’s bad juju if we tag him after a career season. What kind of message does that send to the locker room?
Orton is going to get tagged with a 1st round restriction. His feelings won’t matter since I don’t see him as our long term QB and I doubt McDaniels does either.

at the very least
Doom should get the franchise tag and get paid if there’s organizational doubts over the 11 season and extended contracts.

Here is my favorite Elvis quote
He may be my fifth coordinator as a Denver Bronco, but then again, he really isn’t because he already knows our personnel
He said “my fifth coordinator”. Sounds like he is banking on getting his deal done in Denver. It’s certainly good to hear. Of course, like McGeorge said, if the broncos don’t want to pay it, then he would go elsewhere, but at least he actually wants to come back. That’s half the battle, anyways.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Why has nobody made a live-action game of Chutes and Ladders? I'd be first in line.
From a purely business perspective, it would seem likely that Mr. Bowlen will be the one setting certain financial peremeters for McX & Co. that he is willing to accept, considering the CBA issues, etc.
And he will also likely make his preferences known based on the input he gets from McX and Co.
I also can’t believe that the players (and agents) are not fully aware of their own status vs. the status of the CBA and the Teams need to protect itself. I agree that the Broncos will need to stronly consider the “locker room” effect but the players have to know very well that they may need to accept moves/offers that they might not normally consider if there was a new CBA in place…I just can’t believe (call me naieve) that players like Doom and Orton would take certain moves so personally that they would let it affect their leadership roles.
I believe Doom, Orton, and maybe Kuper will be strong targets to find a way to keep, make happy, and still not put the Team at any significant risk…I would think that McX would already have included them in the process to some degree, so that the basic peremeters are known and understood by all, with only the details to be worked out.
We’ll all know more as the next few weeks pass as decisions will need to make themselves clear…Looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out!

After seeing Orton struggle down the stretch, I doubt we find a way to make him happy this offseason. Me thinks he’ll have to play another good year in 2010 to get a LT deal in Denver.
His career W-L record may be impressive, but it’s just 8-8 with no playoffs as Denver’s QB.
