Potent Quotables - Picking Up the Pieces of a Season Lost

DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH JOSH McDANIELS

General

"I'll start off by congratulating the Chiefs. Coach Haley and their football team did a great job obviously preparing for today after playing just a month ago. They did a nice job of game planning and they played very hard today and obviously played better than we did today. It's a disappointing ending to the season. I'm proud of the effort and attitude our team had this year. Certainly far from the finish we're looking for. "

On what happened in the last ten weeks

"There's a lot of things that go into being able to sustain success and we didn't do that, we weren't able to do that. It's not one thing that's wrong. I think there's a lot of things you evaluate at the end of the season and you're trying to do that during the season and sometimes you can and sometimes you can make changes that affect that and sometimes you can't. We've got to go through the process now, get to work and evaluate everything with our football team, our staff, our organization, our system, our philosophy and try to improve it in every way that we can going into next season."

On his evaluation as a first-year head coach

"There's a lot of things that by next year I'm sure I'll do differently. I think you learn something about this game and your job every week and it's a long season. I think that we started kind of the way that we wanted to start and certainly didn't sustain that. It's about staying the course and doing the right things and being able to play well for months. You can't just do it for six weeks and then kind of rest and relax. I don't know that we did that, but we certainly didn't handle one loss very well because we lost once and then we lost three more and we did it twice. Our ability to respond from those times of adversity during the course of the season is critical. If you go on four-game losing streaks you're never going to have an opportunity to really have a great season and the kind of season that you're looking for. We've got to be able to handle that better going forward."

Star-divide

On what he's learned about himself

"I certainly can do a better job of what I do and I'm not going to go into detail about this, that and the other. If there's anybody in this profession that doesn't think that, I think they're fooling themselves. This is a hard job to do whether it's a player or a coach, somebody in the front office, this is a tough league. It's very competitive. I'm looking forward to getting better in this offseason at what I do and trying to improve our team in every way that I can."

On what happened today

"We had opportunities. Unfortunately it's the name of the game in the past three or four weeks here. We've had opportunities in these games. We were down six points, down three points, second half, fourth quarter. We ultimately didn't play well enough at the end to win the game. We didn't  finish. It's really one of the words that we've tried to use, tried to stress. We didn't finish the game. We certainly didn't play as well as we would have liked the entire game. Like I said, anytime you give up over 300 yards rushing, that's difficult to overcome. You turn the ball over multiple times for touchdowns and it's same thing. Didn't execute as well as we needed to, to win the game."

On if the loss was due to effort

"No. We didn't execute. Like I said, whether it be the call or the actual execution on the field, we didn't execute in those situations that were critical. There certainly wasn't a lack of effort. I think our approach and our attitude today with our team was fine. They were excited and ready to play and we just didn't play as well as we wanted to."

On if the Marshall/Scheffler situation affected the game

"No."

On if QB Kyle Orton is the right guy for the offense

"Orton played a lot of good football this year. We'll re-evaluate everything and we'll re-evaluate that. I think Kyle made a lot of progress this year in terms of running our offense and doing some of the things we needs to do. I know there's plays that he would like to have back today but I think there are plays that everybody would like to have back. I was proud to have the opportunity to coach him this year and look forward to moving forward with him."

On Kansas City RB Jamaal Charles running for 259 yards

"Whenever that happens it's never just one thing. There's no way that it was one reason. We missed some tackles. We certainly let him around the edge a few times, I know that. He cut the ball back and parted our defense a few times. He obviously created some big runs. He's a great player, he really is and he's got a bright future in this league certainly. We're going to have to play him for a long time. "

On WR Jabar Gaffney

"It doesn't surprise me how he played. He stepped up and played very well. We moved him around a lot and did a lot of things with him. He's a pro and I'm glad to have the opportunity to coach him. I loved my time with him in New England and the same is true for here in Denver. I look forward to working with him for a long time."

On how he feels

"Disappointed. I'm not going to be dramatic about it. I wish we were playing next week but we didn't play well enough to deserve that opportunity. There's no question about that. The last four weeks we didn't earn the right to continue to play in this league into the playoffs. We've got a lot of work to do and there's definitely going to have to be some things that change. We can't just go back and do the same thing."

On if execution is the reason they lost to Kansas City and Oakland

"No. There's always things you can do better. I'm not justifying anything but whether it be schematically, we can all coach and play better. If you lose a game like that, whatever it may be, to whomever it is, whether it be Indy, Philly, Oakland, Kansas City it doesn't make any difference. If we coach and play better than we'll have a better opportunity to win and we didn't do that in those games."

On if he needs to change the mind set

"I think that we have to look at what may be the common denominator in terms of why we are not finishing better than we're finishing. I can't speak for years prior but I can speak for this year and we certainly didn't play nearly as well in the second half of the season as we did in the first half and there are other things we didn't do well either. Whether it be play good run defense and then we were inconsistent as we came down the stretch or turned the ball over very little at the beginning of the year and turned it over a little bit more as the year went on. We've got to do a good job of evaluating what has caused these finishes because that certainly is very disappointing to myself, to our team, to our staff, Mr. Bowlen and we've got to work hard and we've got to fix it. We've got to find an answer. This isn't an acceptable ending to the season. We've got to do a lot better than this."

On if the answer is talent

"I've been on lesser talented teams that won games. I don't necessarily point the finger and say this, that and the other. I think that you have to have a team. We're building a team. We want to build a team. We want to win as a team, we lose as a team. Whatever that means. You're always trying to get the most talent on your roster that you can possibly have. You can certainly win in this league without the greatest talent in the league. There's no question about that. The best team usually wins the Super Bowl."

On building the team

"Very disappointed in the last ten weeks there's no question about that. I'm proud of the work that they've put in -  the team in that locker room. They've done everything we've asked them to do and tried to play the way we wanted them to play. We didn't get it done as a group, staff, players, organization, and we've got to do better. Moral victories are very hollow in this league. You finish 8-8 and if you feel good about that you're probably going to have a hard time being better than that next year. No, I don't feel very good about this and I don't feel very good about 8-8 and I wouldn't feel very good about 9-7. You want to win enough to deserve to play in the playoffs and if you do then you can be proud of what you did and how you did it."

QB KYLE ORTON

On the Broncos' mental state entering today's game against Kansas City

"We prepared hard, and we went out and fought hard and played as a team, lost as a team, and got beat by a football team that played better than us today."

On if the Broncos' offensive scheme was different due to missing players

"We threw it a lot. We were in four-wide (receiver sets) and got back into some empty (backfield sets). I thought the guys up front blocked well. I thought the receivers played really hard. I know they're tired at the end of the game. (They) played really hard, and I commend them for that. We had guys step up who haven't really seen a whole lot of time this year and did some decent things."

On Kansas City LB Derrick Johnson's two interceptions

"The first one I wish I had back. (It was) just one of my poor throws of the day. The second one, that's football. Sometimes you don't see guys. I think he was supposed to be blitzing, actually, and kind of just came across the line of scrimmage. I thought I had (TE) Daniel Graham wide open and there he showed up on me. That happens in this league. Obviously, I wouldn't have wanted it to happen tonight but (that's) just kind of how it goes."

On the Broncos' performance during the past two months

"We didn't play as well. We played so well the first six weeks complimentary wise like we've talked about all year (with) the kicking game helping both phases, the offense not turning (the ball) over to help the defense and the defense getting us in field position and us taking advantage of it. I just think that for whatever reason that kind of slipped down the stretch. We kind of seemed like one group would be playing well and then maybe not the other. We just couldn't get it on the same page in the same game. It's tough to win when you do that."

On what the offense needs to do to improve next season

"This will be our second year (running this offense), so we've got to work hard. This is a big offseason coming up. Everybody has had a year to kind of digest the system and get comfortable. I think (Head) Coach (Josh McDaniels) has had a chance to get comfortable with his players, as well. As frustrated as I am, I'm also excited. I'm looking forward to next season. I'm looking forward to playing with these guys. We've got a bunch of good pros in this locker room, and I appreciate every one of them."

On if the Broncos have expressed an interest in re-signing him for next season

"Time will tell. It'll be an interesting offseason for a lot of people. I've been very patient, and I know the organization has been patient as well with me. I think something is going to get worked out. I certainly want to be back with these guys. I want to be back with these coaches. This is the best organization that I've ever played for, so I want to keep on doing it."

On the potential changes to the Broncos' roster

"I've never been on a team that the rosters look the same (the next season). That's really the tough part about the last game of the season. This is the last time you're ever going to play with this group of guys, and it's going to be a different team next year, no question about it."

On missing key players on offense in today's game

"We had the guys that wanted to play in the huddle. I appreciate Coach (McDaniels) for his decision. We're trying to win games and we're trying to build something special, and sometimes you've got to make tough decisions. I stand behind him, and I know the other guys do, as well. I just appreciate him for having the direction for this football team."

On the Broncos' current outlook for next season

"I don't know. The offseason tells a lot. It's going to be (dependent on) how hard we want to work (and) what type of effort do we want to put in in the offseason. It's easy to show up when you're supposed to and work and do all that, but the great teams, they show up and they're ready to roll even when you don't have to. I think that's the group of guys that we have, and we're ready to go."

On not making the playoffs after starting the season 6-0

"It's tough to swallow, no question. It's at tough way to end the season, for sure."

WR BRANDON STOKLEY

On the disappointing end to the season

"Yeah, it's disappointing. You never want to finish the season off this way. Hats off to the Chiefs, they came in here, played a good game and played better than us. But it is a little disappointing."

On the Chiefs controlling the game from the third quarter on

"Yeah, they did a good job in the second half of taking it to us. They played well across the board on offense and defense. We were right there, we just couldn't make a play down the stretch."

On finishing 2-8 after starting 6-0

"We just played good football early and we just didn't play good enough late in the season. That's really the bottom line, there's no secret to it. If you don't go out there and play good football, you're just not going to win in this league. And that's what happened in the second half of the season. We just got outplayed."

OLB/DE MARIO HAGGAN

On if the Broncos were beaten before they took the field

"No, I don't think we were beaten before we took the field. But once we took the field we were definently beaten in all phases of the game. Although we were in a position to have an opportunity to go to the playoffs, we certainly didn't play like we deserved it based on some of the things we did. Myself included."

On Kansas City's success running the football

"Just not sound defense.  On the whole, we didn't do it and they were coming from everywhere.  We had a lot of good calls and we just had to make plays and we didn't make those plays. [Chiefs RB] Jamaal Charles had a heck of a year and he continued that today.  "

On if the deactivation of WR Brandon Marshall and TE Tony Scheffler affected the team's psyche

"That had nothing to do with the way we played today.  Regardless of who we've got out there, we've got to go to work with what we've got.  Obviously we didn't make enough plays today but that was a decision made by the coaches and the organization,.  So it's out of my reach and I just have to go out there and do my job."

WR JABAR GAFFNEY

On a disappointing end to the season

"Well we started the season 6-0. After that somewhere along the way we lost that winning edge. We couldn't pull games out in the fourth quarter and getting behind too much early on. It was a combination giving us an end result of going home."

On if the Broncos are the same team now as when they started 6-0

"I think we're better than 8-8. This team has so much talent and so much potential. But we just didn't show that consistently enough. In this game you've got to be consistent, or else you'll be at home in the beginning of January."

On pinpointing the team's struggles at the end of the season

"Well, we started good and we finished bad when you look back on the season. Next season we'll have to start fast and end good as well, and then we'll have a chance."

TE DANIEL GRAHAM

On today's loss

"It was very disappointing. It was a disappointing season for us. We didn't want this, no one does. We expected to get to the playoffs. We have a lot of work to do next year."

On why the season ended worse than it started

"[By] Not playing sixty minutes...not executing. The coaches did a good job of putting us in the right game plan. We have to execute better. We have to play better."

On the season overall

"It's a very disappointing season for us. We all play this game with one goal and we didn't reach that this year. It's a disappointing season for us, and we have to play better."

On lessons from today's loss

"We just have to play better. Coach [Josh McDaniels] has done a good job with the game plans for us. We as players have to come out here and play better. We have to want it more and we have to give it our all."

On whether today's active roster affected the team morale

"No, it didn't affect anything. Coach made a decision and we expected everyone else to step up and they did. Guys stepped up and made plays."

DL VONNIE HOLLIDAY

On Josh McDaniels' first season as head coach

"He took a team that no one gave a chance to do anything and we finished up eight-and-eight . [There is a] New scheme, offensive and defensively.  For a lot of people, they probably would feel like they made a good run at it, but when you work as hard as we do, that's not what you play for - to be eight-and-eight and an average team. You play, and you work that hard to go out and compete and get to the playoffs and that's why we play the game. That's what makes it exciting. That's why we go out there every day and put your body on the line, because you want to go out and win games. Unfortunately, we didn't win enough. We showed some sparks this year, some flashes of brilliance and greatness, good things. It was just sparks and flashes, and we never really got the fire burning. It's a lot of little things. We're still an immature team. It's a lot of little things that we're going to have to fix as a team from top to bottom."

Orton had a rough game

But I LOVED seeing him get that first down when he dove head-first. Not quite the helicopter play, but pretty damned sweet. And his post-game comments remind me why I like the guy so much…

And actually, I think it's wrong to say he had a rough game.

He had a rough few plays, but overall I thought he played well.

i loved that too. ...and his comments BUT

I hope we draft a youngster to work behind him next year. A groomed-typed youngster. I think we can all at least agree that McD has a talent for getting the best from QBs.

The most interesting quotes from this piece

McDaniels:

I was proud to have the opportunity to coach him this year and look forward to moving forward with him."

Then Orton:

This will be our second year (running this offense), so we’ve got to work hard. This is a big offseason coming up. Everybody has had a year to kind of digest the system and get comfortable. I think (Head) Coach (Josh McDaniels) has had a chance to get comfortable with his players, as well. As frustrated as I am, I’m also excited. I’m looking forward to next season. I’m looking forward to playing with these guys. We’ve got a bunch of good pros in this locker room, and I appreciate every one of them."

Would suggest Orton is back next year with a high degree of certainty.

"But I hate the way our identity has changed..Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth." --Brian Urlacher

Agreed. TJ, I just need to ask you a question.

Is it possible to overcome a 24:30 to 4:53 TOP to win the game?

This bengals game is the most one sided 24-0 game I have ever witnessed.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Classic Cutler……I don’t miss him much…..I have to say that a few times today I thought Orton looked like Shane Falco when he was walking back to the huddle.

So you guys are ragging on Cutler

after he beat his own TD record and broke completion records as a Bear after Orton threw away the game with KC? Okaaaay.

by JakeCaan on Jan 4, 2010 2:24 AM MST up reply actions

he's not my quarterback

so yeah. I am going to rag on him for leading the league in interceptions while colossally failing in general all year. Funny that no one had high hopes for Denver this year, so 8-8 is relatively decent. Cutler and his Bears were early Super Bowl favorites. All they needed was a big armed quarterback. Funny how that worked out (or didn’t work out). And as far as I’m concerned, the defense allowing 900 yards rushing today is just as much to blame as Orton’s 2 interceptions. And if that’s not enough, I just like the nickname for Cutler that was coined by Horvil Tiki: Huckdort.

And that's cool I get that...

but let’s not put a pedestal on Orton…he might as well be the same QB as Jay. Giving Orton a blank check just doesn’t wash with me.

And I’d say the Bears were doomed way back in 2007 after they traded Thomas Jones and Chris Harris.

by JakeCaan on Jan 4, 2010 5:03 AM MST up reply actions

In other words

both QBs have serious faults to work out, but also show serious promise. Jay’s in the NFC North…he might as well be playing on Mars…kind of like when Edge left my Colts to play on the NFC West Cardinals…we never really saw the guy again when it mattered…and I doubt the schelduling gods will pair you up again with the Bears anytime soon.

by JakeCaan on Jan 4, 2010 5:11 AM MST up reply actions

Say what you will about Jay

because he is an @$$hole QB I can’t help but want to punch in the face…but at least he ended his season on a high note. 2 TD Ints at home is just unacceptable for a game manager like KO…I know you’d agree.

by JakeCaan on Jan 4, 2010 5:21 AM MST up reply actions

Come on guys...this isn't really worth debating.

In the end, both QBs will be sitting at home come playoff time…and both QBs weren’t exactly clutch when it mattered.

I think there’s something both Bears and Broncos fans can be happy about moving forward…so let’s get along.

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jan 4, 2010 8:20 AM MST up reply actions

And the way he divided our team last year

…and made the offseason about him instead of being a part of the team, AFTER his bad attitude was on display for all to see here for years, left a bad taste for many of us. I think it’s a funny image someone posted. So yes, I laughed.

And he may have ended the season on a high note, but he once again played great when there was nothing to play for. Continuing his trend of choking when it counts…..

In defense of Jay

…I don’t doubt he has done some of the things you have said while he was in Denver ncm42, but they sure haven’t transferred over to the Bears. I keep expecting Jay to blow up like Ryan Leaf did (Jay has had plenty of oppurtunity to do so and may still do so)…but he’s surprisingly said all the right things to a hard-ass Chicago media (read a Rick Morrisey article and you’ll know what I mean).

Unlike Denver…the Bears are not a QB factory…we just don’t know what it’s like to have an Elway. It’s sad to say this, but despite the ints…27 TDs is a big thing for a Bears QB to accomplish…and I’m happy he’s helped Johnny Knox and Aromashado transfer over to the big leagues.

Just make sure you keep in mind

he has never won anything. Not saying he won’t, but his pattern thus far is to wow everyone when the pressure is off, and to fall apart in the face of adversity.

Sure I understand ncm42

but I might as well buy a bomb shelter for the end of the world in 2012 if I expected doom at every corner.

Like I said earlier at this point I guess it doesn’t really matter when both Orton and Cutler will be sitting on their couches watching Rookie QB Mark Sanchez and Tony “I take vacations during my bye week” Romo in the playoffs…what a world we live in, huh?

Here’s a very interesting “what if” that I kind of agree with written by another poster…

“However, on the review of the outcome of the trade for the 2009 season, I find it humorous that both teams may have finished with better records without the trade in year 1.

I’d wager that the Broncos would be in the playoffs right now with Cutler at the helm. And, I’d also wager that the Bears would be 9-7 again with Orton."

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jan 5, 2010 8:50 AM MST up reply actions

Disagree about the Broncos being in the playoffs with Cutler

…for the same reason I disagree about the comment about “expecting doom at every corner.”

In his career, Cutler has not shown himself to be a playoff QB. Sounds harsh, but that’s what it is. Until he proves otherwise, he is a non-playoff QB who puts up flashy numbers.

by ncm42 on Jan 5, 2010 9:28 AM MST up reply actions

I understand ncm42

but I have a sinking feeling you also feel the same way about not expecting doom at every corner.

What I meant was if I expected Cutler to not take the Bears to the playoffs…why should I even watch the games? If you expected McDaniels not to build a solid playoff team…why would you even tune in on Sundays ncm42?

I’m sure you and I are expecting playoffs next year for our respective teams and not the opposite…hell why would we as NFL fans do so otherwise?

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jan 5, 2010 10:16 AM MST up reply actions

Jesus...ncm42

I get that you hate Cutler, but Orton gets a free pass? Orton’s a better leader than Jay, sure, but don’t be a leader by throwing killer Ints; to the same LB no less.

I agree with MetalGearPeaceWalker on this one…in the end both Broncos and Bears fans don’t have much to boast about at the end of the day.

Enjoy the Colts in the playoffs.

by JakeCaan on Jan 5, 2010 3:49 PM MST up reply actions

A little cold-hearted Jake

but hey the Colts are the better team and know what they are doing.

Yeah it is comical that despite the emotions behind the Cutler trade the Bears and Broncos are world’s apart…I don’t think the NFC North and AFC West are schelduled to meet until 2014-15…so this is no where near the Favre situation between the Vikings/Pack.

Also funny but sad that despite the emotions during the off-season trade…both franchises are sitting out the post-season. One thing is sure though, I won’t be waving any white flags with regards to Cutler and the Bears.

If it makes you feel any better, I ran what equates to what the Football Outsiders call the NFL Pythagorean theorem last week and found out that the Jets and Ravens were the top 2 unluckiest teams in the NFL. So the fact they are getting supports their “true” talent level.

4 minutes into the 3rd quarter they have 9 total offensive yards. Just include all of their stats and say “don’t do this and you have a good chance to win games”.

9 yards with the starters playing. They might make an early exit from the playoffs.

Basically keeping it as plain as possible, while watching the Jets’ A-game. Game plans will then be much different next week….

I agree

I think my scenario is far-fetched, but I could also see the Bengals basically phoning it in so as not to show their game plan, knowing they would likely end up playing the Jets again this week.

This is probably pushing the conspiracy theory too far, but one could almost imagine the Bengals phoning it in to face the Jets rather than the Ravens….

News for Kyle Orton

I don’t care for a minute that you appreciate McDs “tough decision”. He benched two of your best targets for nothing more than to prove a point. As much as it would be nice to be an Ivory Tower team, where everything is utopian all the time, a team needs talent on the field to be successful. You, Mr. Orton, are not talented enough to elevate the play of sub-par receivers. You need THEM to elevate you.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and then used against you.

We could go on and on. Orton underthrew on the one pick and the second pick had a defender hiding in the bushes and popping out right as Orton released. It was a tough situation.

The receivers certainly weren’t helping. There were lots of dropped balls, too.

6 in the first half, was it?

That’s absurd. We only had 20 on the year. (here). almost 1.3 come in a game, at home, to a weaker team with the playoffs on the line? I know that McD didn’t blame execution, but it was certainly a part of it.

I think

That Orton epitomizes professionalism. Hes a good off the field leader and is tough. BUT, i think to make it out of the first round of the playoffs your QB will have to at some point make a play out of something that is not their. His skill set simply does not allow him to do that. He has no feet, at all. If he has all day to throw he is effective, but when you play playoff caliber teams your not going to have all day. In my humble opinion if you want to go 9-7, 10-6 get to the playoffs and lose in the first round hes our guy. Thats why I make the comparisons to Griese. I myself want the Broncos back in the big one. By the way ncm42 go Running Rebels.

by johnnyurrotten on Jan 4, 2010 11:27 AM MST up reply actions

No QB does anything by himself (and that included Elway)

He’s got no feet? Neither does Brady. You can move within the pocket (by the way, Orton moved out of the picket pretty well several times, so let’s not overstate here). Griese was a terrible leader – his own players didn’t like him. See any similarity to Orton there? You can’t cherry pick a single season where Griese did fairly well and claim that compares him to Orton, Johnny.

I sympathize to your wanting Cutler back but there are two issues. First, it’s not happening, so it’s best to move on. Second – Cutler had a lousy year, continuing patterns that he set up in the years before and is starting to look like a huge bust. Orton had almost no help yesterday but put up about 431 yards. He’s going to be back, and he’ll be our QB.

Interesting

he threw for over 400 yards (he never did that with Scheffler and Marshall) and threw several bombs today. If it was Cutler you would be saying how great his arm is and how exciting he played. Kyle Orton at least realizes that his two picks really hurt the team. He also didn’t blame any one else.
improv88, you might consider, we do not know all that was said in and around the team which has not come out. I listened to Vonnie Holliday tonight and he mentioned there was alot of immaturity on this team and that was in part responsible for the losing streaks. It goes along with what Orton and a few other vets said. It is something we might want to think about going forward. Who played for themselves and who really played for the team and also the fans.

too many positions are below average and I have to admit KO is Above average (slightly) he’ll make a good teacher at least as we rebuild. I don’t mean to demean him. More Division

Again, much of what I see from McDaniels and from many on this site, is nearly uncritical acceptance of the whole attitude of divide the team into us v. them. Why does McDaniels escape the vigorous criticism that Mike Shanahan felt with a horribly injury depleted team that he lost with last December? What have we heard lately:. blame the offensive line, blame the punter, blame a player for injuring a hamstring, etc. It was a nice preemptive strike by McDaniels to scapegoat the two players before the game, but the defense is what really let the team down today. What about the December coaching?

I really dislike notions like “core players” or cancers or players not with the program or such. This isn’t high school. A coach at this level should be able to motivate players and beyond sorority-type catty infighting. Of course the players quoted in this article are McDaniels’ supporters.

It didn’t have to be the soap opera this season became. Other rookie head coaches came in with much smoother and calmer transitions. McDaniels has in part made it about him. Sure, he can try to get players who parrot his views, but if they cannot perform, like they didn’t today, it just won’t matter. Turn down the us or them division, and stop the drama.

Let’s see calm, smart planning for next season.

Specifically, what did McDaniels do to make this about him rather than making the Broncos better? I hear this repeated all the time. Do you consider benching Marshall and Scheffler making this about McDaniels, even after the team captains (I won’t call them core players) came to McDaniels and asked him to hold some players accountable? I simply do not understand how having players buy into your system and say what you would expect them to say is a negative, or translates into making it about the coach rather than the team.

Why?

Why does a finger HAVE to be pointed? This team has more than one whole. It’s not like we have superhumans all over the field with a toddler playing quarterback (extreme, I know).

There is more to this than what we know.

Winning cures everything. Once the injury bug bit, the poo hit the fan. Our holes were exposed.

Also, does it really matter that Marshall and Scheffler didn’t play? The Chiefs were still carving us up. JaMarcus Russell cut us up. Imagine what could have happened in the playoffs.

It is better that this side of Marshall was shown again before we gave him that fat contract.

Scheffler was a goner anyway.

There is no need to scapegoat.

Instead of pointing a finger, accept that the Broncos were mediocre this season. Team game. Peyton Manning does not catch his own passes. Ed Reed does not play all 11 defensive positions.

Nice Post

Although using Ed Reed as an example may be a mistake since he has not played any positions for weeks and the Ravens did make the playoffs. Just struck me.

People Missing My Point

My point is that in healthy transitions, you don’t have the soap opera existence that we have had in this past year. Baltimore is a classic example. Harbaugh came in and did not have the need to totally redo what wasn’t broken (in Baltimore’s case, the defense). A few players didn’t get the message, but instead of singling them out, they quietly either changed or left. Ed Reed is a bit of free lancer… do you single him out or scapegoat him, or do you help adjust your defense to make the most out of his skills?

As a coach, the buck stops with you. You don’t turn other players into tattletales or police for those players who may be bickering a little in the locker room. You don’t set up favorites or put people in doghouses for weeks at a time.

Josh McDaniels has done some good things for the Broncos, but this whole you are with me or against me thing is really childish, silly and counter-productive.

A year later, we should not be having this discussion about drama with the Broncos. Fans should not be fighting with one another, but the whole environment has done that to us as well. Its really sad.

by Baltimore Bronco on Jan 4, 2010 4:37 AM MST up reply actions   1 recs

"....the soap opera existence ..."

We wouldn’t have had any of that except that the three mental nut jobs (Cutler, Marshall, and Scheffler) caused it.

Well, it seemed to work for some guys, with Belichick, Lombardi, Brown, Parcells, and Walsh being among them.

Different Times

I am not sure that some of those coaches would do so well now. The game and contracts have really changed. Players move a lot more and are paid a lot more.

I am not so sure it is working all that well for Belichick now. He sure did not know how to utilize the talents of Adalius Thomas, who was a terrific ball-hawking linebacker here in Baltimore.

I think that was what was tested and came to the surface this week.

The bigger picture to me is what are the Broncos becoming?

To think we could attain playoff success after such a complete overhaul of a team and the inconsistencies the team inherited is highly unrealistic even if we aspire to greatness. We wanted to see progress and a team that improved from week to week. It didn’t turn out that we improved, but we learned about the system and personnel we have which is also vital to move forward. We are incomplete and flawed as presently designed, but we also know what has to change to be better. First we must know who we are before the possibility of change can begin.

I think we are caught in 2 different world

our personnel and perspective team wise are half McD and half Shanny. I think this offseason will bring more of the McD team first players. Then we will see where we are actually going.

by dmitchell624 on Jan 3, 2010 8:28 PM MST up reply actions

McD "team" players v. Shanahan "selfish" players

I think this is an overdrawn comparison. Doom, Bailey, DJ Williams, Graham, our two outstanding OT’s Prater, all came in under Shanahan. One could make the argument that some of the players in the doghouse, like Hillis, simply have skills not appreciated by McDaniels, but could thrive as team players elsewhere.

by Baltimore Bronco on Jan 4, 2010 2:12 PM MST up reply actions

The Denver Broncos need an identity.

This will probably start with a run game. I would say that if you could fix one thing that would improve the team the most, it would have been that.

However, in order to be great, you do need good players. This whole thing with Marshall and Scheff needs to be resolved before we get anywhere.

Yet, don’t think that automatically casting off Orton, Marshall, or not resigning Doom is the right move. MJ had Pippen. Montana had Rice. Good players are needed. Not necessarily the same situation, but the team needs to make smart moves from here on out. If a Daryl Gardener move is made, then we’ll be in a world of hurt.

Tough loss guys!

Whenever I get to a game to see KC it is at Invesco. Wanted to tell you guys that there are some really bright spots talent wise for Denver, especially compared to the previous year. You are improved in the secondary, front seven, and at RB. Lots to look forward to and I really like the maturity of McDaniels.

KC has been so inconsistent and we have lots more needs. I look forward to a continued battle and both of us handing SD a beat down in years to come. Finally after 10 years a win at Mile High!

What veteran broncos player loses his starting spot next
season to one of our most recent draft picks ?

Agreed

Champ, Goodman and Dawkins can all still play and probably won’t be beaten out but Hill is due to regress sooner and we have some good young safeties.

Depends on who they get in draft and free agency too of course. But the interior of both the DL and the OL will be upgraded this off season, I guarantee it.

if we have 2 first rounders......

draft Iupati and mcclain. that is if they are both on the board. if not we get dez bryant. but i think it would be awesome if we went after anquan boldin this offseason

by broncoboy on Jan 3, 2010 8:57 PM MST up reply actions

ya Boldin is definatly out in arizona

I agree with all 3 of those players but what i would really like to see us do in one of the rounds after 1 is draft a explosive player like C.J. Spiller from Clemson or Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss, cause that would be awesome to have a game-changer like that.

by Whosbob89 on Jan 3, 2010 9:01 PM MST up reply actions

spiller is going early first round...maybe even top 10 from what ive seen on mocks

mccluster should be there in rounds after 1 though. we need more playmakers…but the #1 priority has to be to get the front 7 and oline taken care of.

I like him. If Denver makes a move for another RB I want them to go for Ryan Matthews from Fresno. Kid is fast as hell and tough as nails.

I love Jahvid Best

having watched him here in the Bay Area a lot, though Hugo makes some fair points about him below. I would be happy to have him or (a totally different specimen) Toby but I think the Broncos clearly have more pressing needs, already took an RB in the 1st round in 09, and both Best and Gerhart won’t be available when the Broncos DO get around to taking a back later. They will need another wideout, too, and probably another TE (one or both could come in free agency of course), and even more so DL and OL help so I don’t see them getting him is the gist…

yep lots of tiny, fast, and explosive rb's this draft like

C.J. Spiller from Clemson, Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss, Jahvid Best from Cal, and the sleep would definatly have to be Noel Devine from West Virginia.

A Cal Fan here

I Love Jahvid Best and it breaks myheart that he is leaving Cal….BUT…I am not sure…he is fast, and quick, but the way he runs almost demands that he gets hurt….I went to a lot of Cal games and watched him run, and at the college level he is simply too quick, but even there, he takes shots that put him on the shelf…I’d be surprised if he managed to start half of the games played during his career at Cal….that said, I hope he does well and if he does, and it is in a Bronco uniform….that is fine with me…I would say late in the 2nd or early 3rd is when to look…

Kills me to say it, but the Stanford RB, Toby Gerhart, looks like a future pro that can punish would be tacklers and has some speed…smart kid (already working on his Masters at Stanford)

What if you don't know Jack....but Jack knows you?

ESPN Radio Denver - ELWAY, McDaniels, Scheffler

I think we will hear both sides of the story tomorrow morning.

Just heard that on ESPN Radio 1600 in Denver 7-9 AM MT, they are having Josh McDaniels, John Elway and Tony Scheffler.

Should be quite the show. I bookmarked the show’s website because they stream the show live on the internet also. http://www.vicandgary.com/

He was right, definitely not about the 3 wins…but the Broncos today showed me they weren’t ready for the playoffs.

Nice post, John. Good comments everyone.

Just a couple of things: I checked where we should be picking in the 1st round next April with the Bears pick: I got 10th. Jacksonville, Miami and Chicago have the same W-L record (7-9). JAC and CHI have the same division record (3-3; Miami is 4-2). CHI is 5-7 and JAC is 6-6 in conference play. If someone who knows could comment, I would appreciate it.

We need a running game. 80 yds on the ground doesn’t cut it. That played into our loss today. 431 yards passing for Orton. Huge.

Someone mentioned about Fouts and Enberg drinking…Enberg checked into a “drying out” facility a few years back. Hope he is staying away from the sauce – or can control himself.

At first I didn’t know what to think about the suspensions. Hearing that most of the team’s captains went to McD gives the whole thing validation. Hope we get good picks or maybe a good player or 2 for those 2 players.

I recorded today’s 2nd half with the thought of reviewing our guys play. Might hold off on that until the sting is gone.

I believe that Ron Fields played DE at SF. Should Baker come on...

Fields could help at the DE position. Baker and Thomas both could play DE as well. I look for our D to be improved next year as Nolan et al continues to build.

by Blackknigh on Jan 3, 2010 11:51 PM MST reply actions

Fields played both

Actually, part of the problem was that he was never properly aught one position. I thought that he did well this year, overall, for a 1st year at a new full-time position, but if he and Baker got to trade off next season, it certainly wouldn’t break my heart. Thomas loved NT, but he may be better suited for 3.4 DE

And, we’ve got 6’5, 338 lb. J’Vonne Parker on the IR, with Carlton Powell at 6’2 and 312 lb on the PS. We might have some wood in the shed, so to speak.
