McDaniels and History

As we struggle with yet another post season-less year, and as tensions/emotions/opinions once again have become divided and heightened, I thought it might be helpful to offer a little bit of an historical perspective.  I took a look at the NFL seasons from 1999 to 2009 to see how many new Head Coaches have been named, and how they fared in their first year with the new team.  Some were brand new HCs, others were previous HCs picked to join a new team.  After the jump, I'll share how some of this shook out.

1999 - 9 New Head Coaches
4 had losing records
3 had 8-8 records
2 had 9-7 records
1 made the playoffs & lost in the Wildcard round

2000 - 9 New Head Coaches
4 had losing records
1 had 8-8 record
2 had 9-7 records
1 had 10-6 record
1 had 11-5 record
2 made the playoffs & lost in the Divisional round

2001 - 4 New Head Coaches
3 had losing records
1 had 10-6 record & lost in the Wildcard round

2002 - 6 New Head Coaches
3 had losing records
1 had 8-8 record
1 had 10-6 record & lost in the Wildcard round
1 had 11-5 record & lost in the Super Bowl

2003 - 5 New Head Coaches
3 had losing records
1 had 8-8 record
1 had 10-6 record & lost in the Wildcard round

2004 - 5 New Head Coaches
4 had losing records
1 had 11-5 record & lost in the NFC Championship game

2005 - 3 New Head Coaches
2 had losing records
1 had 9-7 record but did not make the post season

2006 - 8 New Head Coaches
4 had losing records
1 had 8-8 record
1 had 9-7 record & lost in the Wildcard round
2 had 10-6 records, 1 lost in the Wildcard round, the other in the NFC             Championship game

2007 - 7 New Head Coaches
3 had losing records
1 had 8-8 record
1 had a 10-6 record & lost in the Wildcard round
1 had an 11-5 record & lost in the AFC Championship game
1 had a 13-3 record & lost in the Divisional round

2008 - 5 New Head Coaches
1 had a losing record
1 had a 5-4 record
3 had 11-5 records, 2 lost in the Wildcard round, 1 lost in the AFC Championship
    game

2009 - 7 New Head Coaches
4 had losing records
1 had 8-8 record
1 had a 9-7 record (playoff fate to be determined)
1 had a 14-2 record (playoff fate to be determined)

Since 1999, there have been 68 men named as a new Head Coach for a team.

Of those 68, 35 (or 51%) had losing records in their first year with that team.

Of those 68, 9 (or 13%) had an 8-8 record in their first year with the team.

Of those 68, 24 ( or 35%) had a winning record in their first year with the team.

Of those 24, 18 made the playoffs, 4 made it to their conference championship game, and 1 made it to the Super Bowl.

Of the 18 who made playoff appearances, 7 had previously served as the Head Coach of a different team.

Of the 11 who were first time Head Coaches in the Playoffs, 2 have yet to have their post season determined.

Of the 9 remaining, 4 lost in the Wildcard round, 1 lost in the Divisional round, 3 lost in conference championships.

Only 1 Head Coach, in the first year with a team, with no previous head coaching experience has made it to the Super Bowl.  And 0 have won the Super Bowl.
