There have been a lot of rumblings about the Broncos parting ways with Champ,
but it sounds to me like he’ll be back. I’m ok with paying team guys like Dawk and Champ big money. This is good news if you ask me. http://www.gazette.com/sports/champ-91765-million-contract.html
Cornerback Champ Bailey, who is owed $12.5 million in 2010, which is the final year of his contract, admitts he doesn’t know what his future with the Broncos will be. Coach Josh McDaniels made it clear that he expects Bailey to be a part of what he is building in Denver.
"I love Champ," McDaniels said. "He’s a captain, he’s been a Bronco for a while, and we’d love to have him be a Bronco as long as I’m here. He’s a key component to our defense, think he will be going forward."
I wonder if they can re-negotiate?
I guess that’s a regime philosophy question. You could pretty much hang your hat on the Broncos reworking deals with key vets in the past, and pretty much all the key vets were willing participants.
I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that they’d let Champ walk. Even if he is in decline, that’s a relative statement. Its like saying Jenny McCarthy maybe isn’t a Playmate anymore— it doesn’t mean she isn’t still smokin’ hot. The bigger part of Champ’s ‘decline’ is that he isn’t the 2005 Bailey anymore— yet I’ve seen a CB play at Bailey’s 2005 level all of once. He spoiled us with brilliance.

If this were a capped year, my guess is Champ would be cut. $12.5MM for a former shut down CB is far too much. Champ is still a very good player, but that would be a gross misallocation of cap dollars.
But with no cap, all Bowlen will have to do is swallow hard and overpay a Hall of Famer that is clearly on the downside of his career.
I wonder if he can get $12.5 on the open market?
If not, maybe Bailey is open to a renegotiated deal. It doesn’t necessarily have to be either or.

In this case
Not having a cap is good. Where I see players getting cut because of contracts is where an underporforming player has a multiyear contract and cutting that by player a prorated portion of a signing bonus would count against a salary cap. This doesn’t apply to Champ since this is the last year of his contract. This would be a good year to get rid of underperforming players with multiyear hugh contracts. If there is a salary cap then Champ needs to renegotiate.

I saw the Zimmer thing yesterday and thought the same thing… “I thought Slowik was connected to his hip”
Perhaps Bruce Allen told Shanny, “Listen, I’d like to hire you. But if you bring along that Slowik guy you’re gonna get us both fired within 2 years.”

Slowik is going to Washington
as the equipment manager
I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not. Coach Norman Dale "Hoosiers"
Zimmer and Shannahan would be a good combonation
Not gonna lie, why couldn’t Shanny get someone like Zimmer when he was here
Denver rookie head coach Josh McDaniels doesn't have a grasp on how to build a team." - John Clayton, April 23rd, 2009

Home Field Advantage
The Duke raises what has been an issue for the Broncos ever since they moved to Invesco Field and turned Mile High Stadium into a parking lot. The homefield advantage is fading fast. Even mediocre Broncos’ teams in the past seemed to have an advantage at the old Mile High. Since 2001, when Denver moved to Invesco their home records have become progressively worse. Denver is 49-25 including the playoffs at home since moving to Invesco Field. However, the past four seasons have been particularly troubling as Denver has lost to bad teams at home during the latter stages of the seasons to San Francisco, Oakland twice, Buffalo and Kansas City.
Home Records for the Broncos During Their Last Five Seasons at Mile High Stadium
1996: 8-0; 0-1 playoffs (crushing home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC divisional playoff game)
1997: 8-0; 1-0 in the playoffs en route to a Super Bowl XXXII victory
1998: 8-0; 2-0 in the playoffs en route to a Super Bowl XXXIII victory
1999: 3-5; (the year following John Elway’s retirement)
2000: 6-2; (started 1-2 at home then ripped off five home wins in a row)
Home Records for the Broncos at Invesco Field
2001: 6-2 (Marty Schottenheimer wins in Denver as the Redskins defeat the Broncos 17-10. Of course, it happened at the friendly confines of Invesco Field.)
2002: 5-3; (lost games in the final seconds to Miami and Indianapolis and got blown out by Oakland 34-10 on Monday Night Football)
2003: 6-2; (includes a 10-19 loss to a bad Chicago Bears team)
2004: 6-2; (includes a 24-25 loss to a bad Oakland Raiders team)
2005: 8-0 regular season; 1-1 playoffs (34-17 loss in AFC Championship Game to the Pittsburgh Steelers.)
2006: 4-4 (including devastating overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the home finale when Denver needed a win to qualify for the postseason.)
2007: 5-3; (includes ugly 41-3 to San Diego)
2008: 4-4; (including a loss to Buffalo when a Broncos’ win would have clinched the AFC West division.)
2009: 4-4; (0-3 against divisional opponents at home for the first time in team history)
It might be more of an advantage if the fans didn't boo after 5 minutes...
That was just plain sad. I do agree that the mile high mystique is gone, and we must find a way to get it back!

I think this may be a factor of the quality of the teams
The 1996-1998 Broncos were a special team. The 2006-2009 Broncos, not so much. And looking at the records I would think that those two data sets are the key to your argument.
I do miss some parts of Mile High, but I also appreciate a lot of Invesco field’s improvements. And in the end it does not matter how much you yell and scream if the team on the field is not able to do anything.
Agreed
This is sort of like looking at clutch situations in baseball (RISP, etc). Really good teams win most of the time no matter where they are – home or away. Mediocre teams (like the Broncos of recent years) win some and lose some, no matter where they play.

Woody Paige...
this quote pretty much sums up Woody Paige’s ability to reason logically.
“Also, McDaniels showed up in that hoodie, revealing to people in Denver that he still was a New England guy and a Belichick disciple, rightly or wrongly. The Broncos’ old guard, and old wide receivers, didn’t take to McDaniels’ style and an arrogance that overshadowed youthful exuberance and seasons of winning experience.”
so they didn’t like him because he wore a hoodie? Give me a break
also… when did we win? 9-7, 7-9, 8-8 the previous three years? or was he talking about McDaniels history?
Yeah
Perhaps McDaniels didn’t take to the legacy of Denver’s old guard. Seems plausible.

In case anyone's already up for mock drafts
the RealGM 2010 Mock Draft 5.0 seems pretty astute, as far as guessing the draft goes… I like the Broncos getting McLain (or Morgan, or Dez Bryant or Iupati).
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants country, and damned proud of it.
Pedescleau
I noticed Pedescleau’s name missing from the list of signed PS players. Hmmm
