Mike Shanahan reaches deal to coach Redskins - The Denver Post
According to Mike Klis, Mike Shanahan will receive a 5-year deal in Washington that pays him the same salary as he was to receive in Denver, which was $7 million annually. According to Klis, Pat Bowlen and the Broncos will be responsible for half of Shanahan's salary, or $3.5 million each of the next two seasons. So while the deal helps Denver and Bowlen, they are not completely off the hook as we may have hoped. Still, it's cold, hard cash which can be reallocated to signing free-agents and/or rookie draft choices. Congrats and best of luck, Shanny!

Thanks Doug

Word is his son will be Off. Coordinator
Can’t help but wonder if the “country club atmosphere” may start up again in Washington DC.
Go check out Hogs Haven
Portis threw Jason Campbell under the Bus a la Cutler.

They ahve a turmoil over there that will take some time to work out.
Hope him the best…He’ll need it.
Well Congrats to Shanahan
I am glad he is going to the NFC and the since we just played the Redskins we won’t have to face him for awhile.
It will be interesting to see how things go over there compared to when he was here. I mean what has Shanny seen while off that he might to different. I wonder who will really have the final say on what goes on.
Good to see Bowlen gets to save $3.5 million over the next two years.

From what I've read
It’s Shanahan with final say:
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that, in addition to coaching the team, Shanahan will serve as executive Vice President of football operations. That’s the same title Vinny Cerrato most recently held.
Schefter also reports that Shanahan, not Allen, now has the “ultimate authority” over football decisions.
And so the clumsily-kept secret is now out in the open. By all appearances, Shanahan and Allen were a package deal, with Allen coming through the door first and pretending to be in charge until Shanahan was hired.
Seems like the same deal he had here in Denver. Maybe doing the same thing in Washington that he did in Denver will garner better results?
I dunno… seems like same ol’, same ol’ to me. Good luck to everyone involved.

I will be interesting to see.
I mean he was in several training camps and watched some film, so we will see if he does anything different. I would like to see who he brings in as DC.

Yeah
We’ve all heard the Slowick rumors… wonder if that’ll happen. Kind of hard to imagine, but, yaknow, whatever. What do I know? ;)

Congrats, Shanny!!!!
And you SUCK, Snyder! You pay Hayensworth $100 M but you pay Shanny $7 M?? If we’re paying half his salary, I say we should get to use Portis and Hayensworth for 8 games next year!

and congratulations to Kyle Shanahan, as well by the way
Good kid, may set the league on fire someday.

It will be interesting to see what ole Shanny has learned since he was uprooted from his throne.

Good question
What I find interesting is he visited the Patriots’ training camp extensively this summer. So for all the McDaniels’ haters and hoodie commentators, I think that’s pretty telling.
Oh, I never heard that......interesting indeed.

Congrats to Shanny, such a good coach shouldn’t be watching at home every Sunday. He’s back on the sidelines where he belongs, even if it is with the Redskins.
I agree....
Props to Shanahan. He’s too good a coach to not be on the sidelines. He needed a fresh start from Denver. Good luck to him in 2010, as well as McDaniels….
Ok, can someone clear this up?
Not a big deal, but aren’t coach salaries and player salaries totally unrelated?
This isn’t baseball, there is a salary cap (well, usually, maybe not next year, but lets ignore that for now).
I mean, was Bowlen going to spend $7M less on players because he was paying Shanny?
I dont think so.
by charlesnelsonreilly on Jan 5, 2010 8:27 PM MST reply actions
no but bowlen still has to pay 7 million for someone who is no longer affiliated with the team
HILLIS...where are you???
I have an account where he can re-route that deposit

Don’t get me wrong, I like Bowlen as an owner and all. But I have a feeling he wouldn’t be on the street if he had to pay Shanahan the full amount.
I also don’t think it would affect player acquisitions.
Not a big deal, I just keep seeing this point brought up.

cash money
Mr. B doesn’t have an endless supply. He’s not Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones. $7 million is a lot of money. How could it not affect roster spending?

congrats, shanny! sweep the NFC every year forEVER, make all kinds of money, set all kinds of records and RULE the NFC universe! *

Can’t root for the Redskins even though it will mean an in yo face for the idiots who didn’t want him here…
Sorry too crass? Too true. PB first.
Ditto Oxmouth
Congrats to Shanny
Wish I was still living in DC so I could watch him turn a bad team into a good team.
That said, what’s the over/under on how long it takes for the egos to collide?

All right Mastermind!
This gives me a nice, cozy place to put my hatred for Dallas.
Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.
It is official...
I am torn. I live outside DC and cheer against the Skins just to be difficult. Now, I am considering having to change that stance.
Finally
I have an NFC team to watch!
Can’t wait to see what he does with the other JC. Or would he go in another direction?

PFT claimed the other day that he was already targeting Bradford.
But I don’t buy it. Bradford doesn’t strike me as the Shanahan type.

in any case, i’ll stick by the PFT thing.
besides
saying one thing and doing the opposite is VINTAGE Shanahan.
He crazy like a fox.

agree
I think Campbell has proven one thing: he has the mental aptitude to learn offenses. Since his time from Auburn to the NFL, he must have played under 4 or 5 systems. Very impressive athlete and has the mobility to definitely take advantage of Shanny’s aggressive play calling.
Say hello to my fast...
Am so excited...
for the Redskins. I know the past history regarding Shanahan and the mediocrity. The club med feel to training camp. I am just excited for the Redskins and Shanahan. I think his impact will be felt immediately throughout the NFC East. I don’t expect Shanahan to be the coach we remember, I think he’ll take this second coming w/a lot to prove to himself and his legacy. If only we could all have been this excited for McDaniels…

Good For Shanny
Now Mr. Bowlen doesn’t have to pay him anymore and whiny piece of trash Jay Cutler can’t have him. Unwar Bears fans who actually think Cutler will lead them to a championship. GO BRONCOS!!!

The Bears were never going to get Shanny
but they are probably going to pick up Jeremy Bates as OC. Sigh…I’m not trying to start a fight here Bradfather and I respect your passion but I would also say does it really matter when both Orton and Cutler will be sitting on their couches watching Rookie QB Mark Sanchez and Tony "I take vacations during my bye week" Romo in the playoffs…what a world we live in, huh?
I wish nothing for the best for the Broncos ever since they beat the Packers in the Superbowl in ’96. And despite the emotions behind the Cutler trade the Bears and Broncos are world’s apart…I don’t think the NFC North and AFC West are schelduled to meet until 2014-15…so this is no where near the Favre situation between the Vikings/Pack.
The Bears are just like any other NFL fans so of course we expect Cutler to take us to the playoffs. I mean why would you tune in on Sundays if you didn’t expect McDaniels to build a solid competitive team? I’m sure you and I are expecting playoffs next year for our respective teams and not the opposite…hell why would we as NFL fans do so otherwise?

I love your picture and your name. MGS for the win!

Thank you my brother
You’ve got a serious “don’t f#ck with me” picture yourself my friend. Though credit goes to my son for setting up this account, though I like the MGS series my son is more of a fan…fun game, but I can’t stop getting killed during the alarm stage…ah hell there’s always Madden for me.
Anybody wager the chances of Champ Bailey staying with the Broncos? Sure B. Marsh is gone, but is Champ’s contract that expensive that he has to go? Just wondering since there are many teams such as mine that need secondary help.
by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jan 6, 2010 3:51 AM MST up reply actions
Champ's an interesting topic...
McD has recently (3 days ago) made mention that he wants Champ here for as long as possible. However, his salary compared to his production is extremely one sided. He’s set to make 12-13 million next year I believe, which is a lot of money to spend on any one person…
We’ll just have to see.

No Offense Taken
it’s just that I live around several of your fellow Bears fans who are a-holes (you’re NOT one) and they always try to start what Jim Rome calls “border skirmishes.” No, I’m not angry with you, but the Broncos are light years ahead of the Bears, I do honestly believe that. Don’t think that Cutler’s jettisoning plays a role in that because it does.

When you have the 11th overall pick...
why not party it up? Look at how the Eagles or even the Vikings benefited from a WR from the 1st round (Jackson, Maclin, and Harvin)…if you the Broncos decide to go the WR route in the draft that is (who knows, B. Marsh may stay).
I’ll feel good about the Bears if Bates or Weiss is OC. I already feel good about the Bears since Pep Hamilton is gone…if Bronco fans want to know why Orton’s numbers weren’t that spectacular as a Bear wikipedia Pep.

Torn
Love Shanny for all he did, but I hate the Redskins. Can’t erase the memory of the first SB I ever saw live back in Jan 1988.
As I can’t make up my mind here’s hoping for multiple 8-8 seasons for Washington.
