Looks like we're cutting Andre Brown.... NFP

Just came up on NFPost via Yahoo!,

Andre Brown gets cut

Not sure the reason, other than we may move someone up from the Prac. Squad for the game. Could mean a signing, could just be a bad report, we'll see. I do hope we sign him back, unless it's an attitude/ability concern the coaches have.

I will say that this almost certainly means Knowshon is playing this weekend (best news possible since last weeks mutilation of our defensive backfield and Mr. Ayers). We'll need him out of the backfield as a check downs (which could equal our running game...) and because he'll hit the whole about 2 days before Maroney, keeping us out of negative yards.

Either way, lets smack Rex around a bit, and Go Broncos!

Update:Batiste Cut, Alexander and McCarthy added

Thanks to Nick cast for that update. Looks like Alexander could fill in for Ayers for a bit and we have some more depth at Safety. Alexander is huge (6'4 265, means potential run stopper!) and hopefully up to speed.

We also released D’Anthony Batiste

and signed McCarthy and Kevin Alexander from the PS.

Don’t ask me. I’d love to see Beadles at LG. He played LG and LT in college.

Daniels is one of the worst starting O-linemen I’ve ever seen and Hoch is nothing more than a subpar stopgap.

I don’t get what McD is doing along the O-line and from watching his team try to run the ball, I don’t think he does either.

I agree.

I would love to see Beadles at LG, it is better tailored to his abilities/skill set.

The only thing that I can think of is that Harris is still not at full strength, which forces McD to plug in Beadles into the RT position because of his versatility.

It could be worse though…..we could have Tyler Polumbus as our RT!!!

Really???? Hallelujah!!!

Batiste needed to go a long time ago, and McCarthy should be good on SP and if Bruton stinks it up… well, he should be playable at least.

The best news could be Kevin Alexander…. I know he’s a rookie, but that means he could replace Ayers if Moss or Hunter doesn’t do it, keeping Haggen in the middle. And I think Haggen beside DJ is one of the best combos Wink has put together so far. They’ve both been hard hitting machines (though not great in the passing game… oh well)

I wouldn’t be surprised if we did the opposite of these moves next week.

Not knocking him at all

But the way I see it, Alexander is filling in for Ayers, McCarthy for Dawkins/McBath. As soon as the starters are back I suspect they will go back to PS. I don’t know how long Dawkins and McBath are likely to be out, but reports on Ayers were saying ~6 weeks

They should both see time on ST as well as D in the meantime, and I hope they make an impression on the coaching staff and secure their futures here beyond this season.

I also doubt we reverse the Batiste decision, we still have 9 OL as it stands Clark is listed at LT and Batiste was behind Beadles at RT. We probably bring back Brown, but I doubt both.

by Timimus on Oct 16, 2010 1:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I hope Batiste never comes back here. He sucks.

I can see both Alexander and McCarthy staying on the team. Only thing stopping that is if a RB gets injured. Then 1 will prob get cut so we bring back Brown or promote Lance Ball.

It’s not like Brown and Batiste were doing anything for this team. Alexander and McCarthy can at least play special teams.

I’d love to see us use Decker at WR, but not sure how.

Do you know if Gaff is a FA after this season? At this rate, we’ll have to resign Lloyd. He is playing like an All-Pro. Instead of spending $10MM on Marshall, we’ll have to spend $8MM per year to keep Lloyd.

by McGeorge on Oct 16, 2010 2:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Well

if Demayrius keeps taking shots like he did last game, Decker will get his shot soon.

We signed Gaff to a 4 year deal. So he has 2 more years I believe.

I don’t think Lloyd will ask for that much. He hasn’t been this productive ever. A big part of that is because he has chemistry with Orton and thriving in McD’s offense.

I think we sign him for 6MM per year.

or we can franchise him and sell him for while his stock is high.

Just sayin.

I’m sure his agent will ask for as much as Lloyd can get. If he keeps up his current antics, he’ll be an All-Pro and All-Pros don’t sign for $6MM in their contract year.

I don't see him getting a huge contract

when we have such a deep WR core.

Gaffney, Royal, Demayrius, Decker, and Willis will be under contract in 2012.

I would have no problem trading an “All Pro” like Lloyd for a 2nd round pick and go into 2012 with Decker inserted into Lloyd’s spot.

This team can't succeed by cycling out the talent every season

That forms no chemistry, there’s no unity, and players see no reason to get attached if they know they are going to be traded as soon as they succeed.

by Topher Doll on Oct 16, 2010 2:29 PM MDT up reply actions

And I want to keep him

But those here who are always talking “trade high” are going to leave us a very young, and very inexperienced team, one that has shipped all it’s talent out. And I’m not just talking Cutler, if we trade Orton and Lloyd in the next two seasons, Gaff will likely be gone as well, and who knows how long our defense remains what it is.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on Oct 16, 2010 2:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Assuming Lloyd's production continues

then he is a 1 year wonder.

He has been infamous for being strong in pre seasons, but failing in the regular season.

It seems that this year, he realized the regular season actually counts.

You want to pay Lloyd 8 Million a year after 1 good year? I don’t. Not with the amount of talent we have in our WR corps.

If Lloyd asks for that much, I would franchise and trade him. It will be Demayrius’ 2nd year so he will be asked to do a lot more.

We didn’t draft Demayrius Thomas for him to sit behind Brandon Lloyd.

Now, if Lloyd asks for something like 6 MM a year then by all means, sign him. But i’m not prepared to sign Lloyd (29 years old) to a multi year extension at 8 million a year.

You are mistaken, we don't even need to be having this conversation

Because he’s under contract till the end of 2011, so why are we having this conversation? And yes we did draft Thomas to sit behind Lloyd just like we draft Tebow to sit behind Orton, since Thomas’s return, Lloyd’s targets have gone up and Thomas’s have dropped since that first game he played in.

Good cuts, bad PS promotion!

Adding Diryal Briggs wouldve been better….Alexander too raw, needs another year or 2. We should’ve added Antwan Barnes, but so much for common sense. McCarthy is ok, but he’ll go back to PS. Hope we don’t lose Brown as part of this shuffle!

I actually like the Alexander move

I thought he did a solid (if raw) job setting the edge in the run game in the preseason. He also, I thought, showed pretty good instincts blocking in the return game – and laid some licks on guys.

I don’t know a lot about any Briggs so can’t say much there.

I am interested to see McCarthy in a real game. I wasn’t too impressed by his preseason. He was adequate but I don’t remember him making any great plays.

No way we were going to cut Maroney

We swapped picks for this guy. To cut him over a PS player like Brown would be ludicrous.

No way we give up on him after a couple games. I think he will be in Denver for awhile. When we traded for him, McD said he didn’t want this to be just a 1 year rental. He wants to resign him.

point well made

I was just thinking about how bad of a rep Maroney has gotten in the past few weeks. He is a dancer, but he can move outside the tackles quite well. I think he’ll be ok, but I also had higher hopes for Andre Brown, and the comparisons seem to hurt any hopes I had about him being a 3 yards, cloud of dust, thomas jones type.

Just quoting what McD said when we got Maroney

whether we like it or not (most ppl will not), we will likely resign Maroney after the season is over.

McD always says he will play, and sign, the best players, doing this would go against his stand.

I don't care if they've played well in the past

If they don’t play well now, why keep them? At this point, he doesn’t compliment anyone, I’d take Buck, for catching and blocking skills, and Moreno over Maroney any day.

by Topher Doll on Oct 16, 2010 2:25 PM MDT up reply actions

It matters because we don't have the offensive line that NE had when he was productive

We need to fix the oline before we will see any sort of production from our RB’s.

Buckhalter is a fine back up but he is nearing the end of his career.

He has never stayed healthy and I don’t anticipate him staying healthy all of 2010, especially with the amount of injuries we have had. Buck will end up twisting an ankle or something and miss a couple games. It’s in his DNA.

McD is a system guy

He has turned Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd into pro bowl players.

He has also seen Maroney play well in the same system he is trying to create.

So, yes, I do think McD will sign Maroney because he will knows Maroney fits the system he is trying to run

This system isn't the same one he ran in NE

I think this has been discussed already, just because someone played well in NE doesn’t make them an instant fit here, otherwise Maroney would be playing well. Lloyd has already played like a Pro Bowler at times, and I think it’s more Orton then McD that’s helping him play this well, cause he wasn’t that impressive last season. People succeed outside of McD’s system, it’s not a perfect system, otherwise we’d have more wins.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on Oct 16, 2010 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

You need system, personnel, and experience. It could be the same system and Maroney could be a fit (theoretically), and still have zero output thanks to inexperience and inferior personnel.

Plus, you could argue that Maroney wasn’t a fit in the NE system, but that’s beside the point I guess.

by tunesmith on Oct 16, 2010 2:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Really?
I think it’s more Orten then McD that’s helping him play this well

You are saying Orton is having this pro bowl year just randomly? A light went off in his head and he is playing like a pro bowler?

You have to give credit where it’s due and McD has created a system that is QB friendly and Orton is reaping the benefits of it.

I’m tellin you if Orton was somewhere other then Denver right now he wouldn’t be having this type of year.

McD’s system is more tailored to Orton’s ability—-which is short accurate passes. It is similar to the system that he played (and excelled) in at Purdue.

We have all said that...

Look Nick, take this advice for what its worth from an older dude to a young dude.
You like to argue like everything is black and white. It aint mate. Life is shades of grey, and as you get older, you will see and learn that.
For example, I agreed its part system, but from my point of view, you argument came across as SYSTEM only…thats a black and white view man. You gave very little, if any credit to Orton. I wonder would you do the same to Rivers, Brees etc al. My guess is probably not.
When you argue things as black and white, you come across as a smart ass. Trust me, we were all the same when younger…me, I just dont have the time or patience to deal with it, and I just wont do it any more. I am an older guy, dont need to deal with it. Had you have said what you did above, we have no problem.
You can take this advice for what it is. i like your passion, but not always how you present your arguments. You might think they are not confrontational or arrogant, but to me….and i am only speaking for me….thats the way they come across. And I personally will never take kindly to that.
Peace.

Actually

my biggest mistake was revealing my age to MHR because I’m really tired of when people have a problem with something I say, they revert to my age.

I’m young or I’m arrogant or I’ll learn when I’m older.

So because I believe McD’s system is benefitting Kyle Orton and I don’t believe Orton became a pro bowl QB all of a sudden it makes me arrogant or a smart ass?

I stated above that I do believe Orton is a good QB but I also believe McD’s system is helping him. So I don’t really see how that comes across as being arrogant. Arrogance is displaying an attitude of superiority and in all my time in MHR I have never displayed that attitude. I’ve always been open to all opinions and perceptions from day 1.

It’s a simple fix. If you have a problem with how I present my stuff then don’t read my stuff.

I'm much older than you Nick

And I believe that if Orton was still in CHI, he would still be wallowing in mediocrity and competing with the likes of Rex Grossman for the starting job. McD’s system, plus his talent have made him the stud that he is today, and I believe MOST fans realize this. Just look at Cassell to see what a difference the system can make. But it’s certainly not an age/generational thing – other than maybe some of us old dogs being too stubborn to listen to your reason.

But that might be the crazy talking. All success on a team isn’t the coaches success and all the failure too. You can’t say all good things are McD and all bad things aren’t.

And I do think Orton with a good set of receivers is an above average quarterback, look how he’s doing with a piss poor line and a bunch of no names.

You're not being argumentative

I hope I don’t seem argumentative. I thought we were just having a friendly discussion.

I see potential in the coming years. I don’t see potential this year.

Moreno can’t seem to stay healthy. We have to adjust accordingly by having a #2 back who can step in and produce.

I don’t see Buckhalter as that guy because he is always injured.

Our #1 need this off season is an offensive line. It is clear by all the shuffling that we don’t have the right personnel. I anticipate we pick up a power Guard at some point who will take over for Daniels next year.

Once we get the right personnel, I think Maroney can be a good #2, but right now our offensive line is a mess. Maroney was drafted in the 1st round for a reason. He isn’t like the late round RB’s who came here and thrived in Shanny’s system. Maroney has talent.

o lineman

I really like Cannon.

Stefen Wisniewski from Penn State is another. He is a player who can play both guard spots and center.

He is tough, quick, and is a smart player. He could come in and play guard as well as be back up center.

Lastly, my favorite olineman is Derrick Sherrod. He is the tackle from Miss State. He is a projected 1st round pick, but he might be worth it, especially if we let got of Harris this off season.

How many though?

Plus the Saints had plenty of Prima Donnas on their team, especially defense. Look at the coaches who win multiple SB’s, those who go to the Hall of Fame, those who are remembered decades afterward, those are the ones who can control their locker room. Joe Gibbs is the only coach I know who had sustain, continual success without any ego on his team. Dungy maybe, but Harrison, Saturday, James were all pretty egotistical. Dungy just kept it all in check.

You can have success without big ego players, but if a coach can deal with them, it’s much easier to succeed.

First round means nothing, Moreno was 1st round, Brady Quinn was first round, Leinart and Leaf were first round. Don’t use draft placement as a qualification.

Round does matter

You don’t get drafted in the 1st round without displaying significant talent. That’s an undeniable fact.

Maroney being drafted in the 1st round means that he showed undeniable talent or he wouldn’t have been drafted that high by the Patriots years ago.

You can try and point out people like Quinn and Leinart and Leaf, but you are focusing on all the “busts” and not all the tons of other 1st round picks who actually succeeded.

Maroney has talent and potential. That’s all I was saying.

And so many bad players chosen early, after two years in the league, no one cares what round you were drafted in, just how you’ve performed. Once your rookie contract expires, GM’s look at your play to determine your skill, potential and pay.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

I'm not disagreeing

All I’m saying is that you are drafted by potential and Maroney clearly flashed enough to be a 1st round pick.

We've cut players we traded for

If you trust McD, you think he’ll play the best player, not the one he payed the highest price for. And if we do resign Maroney, I’m scared for our running game.

We haven't cut player we traded for after a few games

Why would you be scared?

Maroney isn’t our #1.

He is the #2 behind Moreno and a #3 on goal line stands behind LenDale.

As long as we have Moreno and LenDale, you shouldn’t be scared.

Be scared if Lance Ball is our #2 RB.

I doubt he'll be our goal line back

After the game where he couldn’t punch it in, Buck has taken most snaps near the goal line. I’d take Buck over Maroney any day, he can block, catch, and actually has vision to know where to cut. Maroney lacks burst, vision, and drive.

I did a little bit of research

I found this amusing.

Darrius Heyward Bey is the 8th highest paid NFL player in 2010.

Tyson Jackson is 13th.
