Broncos Re-Sign DL Le Kevin Smith
The Denver Broncos on Tuesday signed free-agent defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith, it was announced.
Smith (6-foot-3, 308 pounds) is a fifth-year player who played in 13 games (2 starts) with the Broncos in 2009 and totaled 10 tackles (9 solo) and a sack (2 yds.) after being acquired as part of a trade with New England prior to the season. He was released by the club on Sept. 7.
He has appeared in 44 games (2 starts) during his career with Denver and New England (2006-08) after he entered the NFL with the Patriots as a sixth-round draft choice (206th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft from the University of Nebraska.
Smith has totaled 35 tackles (21 solo), one sack (2 yds.) and one fumble recovery during his career in the regular season. He also played in two postseason contests with New England in 2007.
A four-year letterman who recorded at least 40 tackles in every season at Nebraska and started 35-of-49 career games played for the Cornhuskers, Smith attended Stratford academy in Macon, Ga., and he was born on July 21, 1982.

its moves like this
that make question McDaniels intelligence. This guy provides us with no production on the field and doesn’t create competition for other players. There is absolutly no reason he belongs on this team or any other.
It's called desperate...
The DP story would suggest that this is because of an injury Marcus Thomas suffered during the game.
Are you kidding me? Marcus Thomas...far out....hes been playing well...this is THE unluckiest team ever!

There weren't many who cared
I think DJ, Moreno, Bannon, Thomas and maybe Reid seemed like the only ones that cared. I hate to say it but the reports of Champ sneaking out of the locker room in a hurry without talking concern me. He really never has been much of a leader though, at least not one that demands more from his team mates. His idea of leadership is show up and lead by example. That’s not bad but we don’t have any leaders on this team demanding more out of their team mates. That is one of the things we’ve missed most IMO, the D has lacked that type of leader since Al had to retire because of his neck injury.

Really? Not Dawkins?
I think he’s a pretty vocal leader, no?
How is Dumervil on the leadership bit? I have no idea.

Dawkins....maybe
Dawkins is certainly a vocal and emotional player, I’m not sure how much sway he has in the locker room at this point however. He also has missed the last two games and was standing quiet on the sidelines on Sunday just like everyone else appeared to be quiet and dis-interested.
Dumervil is pretty quiet as well, just takes care of business...

poor Haggan
I know the guy is happy to be starting. He better be because I don’t know where else in the league he could start, other than special teams (he is a beast STer)
What do you all suggest as an alternative?
No offense, but negative comments without a suggestion don’t do much for our community, our understanding of the game, or our Broncos.
I truly don’t know what the alternative here is (if indeed Marcus Thomas is injured), so I welcome the input.

I agree
I was actually hoping it wasn’t due to yet another injury and that it was a sign we were going to play more of a 4-3 look because we don’t have the depth at line backer to play the 3-4 successfully any longer. Add another big body to a 4 man rotation is what I was hoping even though I’m not super high on Smith.

that let me know i’m not the only one with a good sense of humor. god forbid people use common sense. a player gets hurt, you gotta bring someone else in. smith won’t do anything but fill out the 53, i agree, but what do people expect them to do at this point?
I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be.
it is amounting to this:
any and everything people can latch on to right now to pour gas on the fire is exactly what they are doing. we aren’t talking about why we’re 2-5, drafting, trades, none of that here. this is simply a thread about picking up a player to fill out the 53 man roster, but as you can see, the overwhelming attitude is like that of a very sarcastic high school student.
i am SO glad that there isn’t anyone on this blog that actually has anything to do with the broncos day to day operations, far as i know.

I assume this means we have absolutely no other options whatsoever, because letting this guy go when we did was still too late.
I don’t have any other suggestions though, other than Smith shouldn’t unpack his bags OR bother hanging any pictures in his locker.

To be fair...
We apparently have an injury and need a guy ASAP. We need a body, and considering the fact that there are slim pickings out there right now, The Kevin can step in because already knows the system, such as it is.
But fundamentally I agree that this fills a hole out of necessity, and not much more. It certainly does not improve the squad.

McDaniels said the move was because of Vickerson's injury
During today’s press conference, McDaniels said that the reason they brought on Le Kevin Smith is because they were not sure if Vickerson’s injury would preclude him from playing, and if it did the Broncos would be too thin on the defensive line without another defensive linemen on the roster.
Vickerson and Thomas both hurt.....
He was signed because he will probably have to play this week with the number of DL we have hurting especially if we want to play some 4-3

THE KEVIN IS BACK!
Like Salmon returning to their breeding ground. The Kevin is back where he belongs, in Broncos uniform.
Let me use some stats about LeKevin Smith to mislead you. With LeKevin we only lost to the Raiders 20-19, without him 59-14, so The Kevin is worth a 44 point swing everygame on our team.

There are bigger things to be worried about than this signing
There are no other better options out there with the loss of Marcus Thomas and we do need some semblance of depth there especially if we continue to use the 4-3 since our LBs are depleted.

Does anyone think something seems similar?
First let me say I am not a Shanahan fan. I think he was a great OFFENSIVE COACH but terrible as a G.M. and had no idea what to do with the defense.
This brings me to this point. Shanahan had a good offense. It racked up yards per game but not high in points per game. The defense could not stop the run. He always brought in free agents to fill in like patch work. He went through defensive coaches like we go through injured players. Speaking of injured players. His last year or two did we not blow through 6-7 running backs because of injuries.
So now we get McDaniels. We rack up the yardage but as with Shanahan we do not score a lot. Our defense can’t stop the run. Getting the idea? hmmmmmm are ya?
Well we then have a coach who is a offensive minded coach but has no idea what to do to fix defense. Still not seeing it? Well We now have a head coach who is bringing in players in free agency to strengthen our defense as well as help the running game. Come on you have to be seeing it by now. Wait McDaniels fires the defensive coach after one year . COME ON ONE YEAR ONE NEW DEFENSIVE COACH. You guys who don’t see it are killing me. I think McDaniels is Shanahans illegitimate son. He has to be. They are one in the same. I bet McDaniels is building a 35,000 foot house with a bowling alley in it just like Shanahan and it’s right next door. Now please grab a beer and think about all the things similar.
Where to start...
He did not fire Nolan. Nolan wanted to leave and McD obliged him. Also McD was a defensive coach at one time and he has improved our D very much(almost all of our defensive roster from shanahan is no longer in the NFL). It is also unfair to compare a coach in his 14 or 15th year to someone in their second
WTF GEREN?!?!?!

It's a necessary signing
We are running 4-3 to off set the incredibly amount of injuries to our LB core. Vickerson is hurt so now we got to pick up a d-lineman. No need to hate on it. It was necessary for what we are trying to do.

yup
McD carried 7 DL all last year and we were already a little short with 6 (which is the number we want on the active roster)….with Smith we can activate him if Vickerson is not ready to go.

we are trying to run the 4-3. I don’t think he is a good fit, but I could be wrong.

DL help or did Smith's unemployment benefits run out?
Well Smith isn’t exactly a 99 week unemployment victim yet but maybe we can bring him back again when his benefits do run out. He is not destined to be here long or is he?
At least McDaniels didn't give away draft picks to get him
I guess I’ve dispirited enough about this team that I get excited when the coach only makes a questionable move, instead of a terrible move. On a lighter note, the “Fire Josh McDaniels” Facebook page had this funny quote:
“McDaniels is like a sexually transmitted disease to this organization. We may be able to clear him out of here, but the stench he’s brought with him will linger, and the shame will never go away!”
It’s a good place to vent if you’re not a McDaniels fan.
We had to give up a conditional draft pick in the 2059 draft for him. Also McDaniels is now not allowed to draft in the first 2 rounds.
I will be drafting instead.
And if I was actually drafting for the Broncos we’d have Orakpo and Cushing. We’d still have Demariyous Thomas, too. Might not be so bad.

We are sticking with the same 4-3 alignment that allowed the Raiders to run for over 300 yards? Is that smart?

LATE POST - I'm happy to see LKS back
It’s too bad that injuries have finally hit the DL, too, but LeKevin was a player who never showed his full abilities because of his injury and following recovery, and his stock dropped in the eyes of fans as a result which is the expected result.
My original roster projections placed him on the bubble but not by that much. He’s a serviceable backup type of DE34 who can (when healthy) provide some run-stopping ability and a minimal level of pass rushing ability. Moreover, I had expected that we’d re-sign him at some point, particularly if injuries hit.
He’ll probably never become a star in the NFL but that’s not the point. it’s better to have adequate backup level talent on the DL right now than what Briggs offered. Our roster numbers of the DL were lower (6 rather than 7) this year so depth becomes an issue for the DL rotation when the numbers drop. LKS was an appropriate addition given our present situation.
People need to drop the condemnation of his abilities based solely on his sub-par performance last year when he was still affected by injury. He came back too quickly from a serious injury and his play was affected. We rarely saw a healthy LKS. He won’t be more than a backup level player even though he’s now healthy but that’s not a trivial addition or one that deserves to be dismissed with overblown, hyperbolic comments. I see little evidence that most people have engaged in a serious evaluation of his play. I don’t expect people to be happy with the loss to the Raiders but thoughtless whining is not a serious way of showing your level of football knowledge. As always, there’s a correlation between how little a fan knows and their willingness to engage in blanket condemnations. Those hyperbolic commentaries say a lot about the writers and little about what’s happening on the football field.
"the megalomaniac view of oneself as the Elect, wholly good, abominably persecuted, yet assured of ultimate triumph; the attribution of gigantic and demonic powers to the adversary; the refusal to accept the ineluctable limitations and imperfections of human existence, such as transience, dissention, conflict, fallibility whether intellectual or moral; the obsession with inerrable prophecies…systematized misinterpretations, always gross and often grotesque." – Norman Cohn - quoted in The Paranoid Style in American Politics
