Ah, my musings on a Sunday - first, I rarely post, as I'm frankly too busy, but I applaud everyone here at MHR, my favorite and most trusted resource for the best team in the league. As I've moved to where the enemy resides (Bay Area) I don't get nearly the amount of coverage or first hand insight that I used to get when attending games at the old Mile High Stadium. (side note - went to the first game at Invesco and the last game at Mile High). Anyways, I appreciate the time and effort you all put in, as it really keeps us diehards up to speed on the Broncos.
Now, onto the game today......first, the good - Orton is amazing. He reminds me a lot of Drew Brees. He's just a winner. Our passing attack is ridiculously good, and the line is protecting the pass rush extremely well (even with 6 sacks today). Prater - let me be the first to tell you that I picked him up in my fantasy league, and everyone laughed - has been a model of consistency, and is going to be the next Elam for us. The defense played a lights out game to hold Chris Johnson to 53 yards. Justin Bannan and Jamal are starting to gel, and Vickerson is looking like a very good pickup as well.
The bad - Good lord, when are we going to fix the special teams? Great kick at the end, wonderful coverage and a great hit by Bruton. But.....but.....another return for a TD? Someone needs to get their **** chewed out for this one. Unacceptable.
The very, very very UGLY - there IS no alibi - our run game is atrocious. Crap, I keep seeing Hillis, Ryan Torain, all the backs that could help us....and we just plain suck right now. Here's the problem - one, a consistent run game comes from consistency on the line - our Oline has shuffled quite a bit, so we'll give a slight break. Two - and what bugs the living he** out of me - is watching the backs dance around from side to side instead of just hitting the ^%^(^( hole and getting the 4-5 yards. You can't establish a run game if you can't get the tough yards when it counts, and you can't depend on the pass for everything.
I'm very impressed so far with our defensive line, and even more so by our linebacking corps, who I thought was going to be in some trouble with the loss of Dumerville. Looks like Ayers is a real player, and Cox is a very talented corner that will only get better with playing time. Lots of positives for the future, we just need time playing together on both sides of the ball. You saw that start to come together with our defense today.
The last thing - I know people are bagging on McDaniels for going for it on 4th downs inside the red zone and failing to score anything. I'm split - I agree that it's a dumb move to not get 3 on the board when there's 5 minutes left in the 4th. However, what I like about it is that McD is showing his offense that he has complete faith in their ability to move the ball (through the air, at least) - and no one so far has proved him wrong - Orton's on pace for some 5600+ yards.
All we need is a big bruising back - and guys, we have one - unfortunately though, Lendale is hurt. But with Lendale, Brown, Maroney, and Moreno, we should be ok for the future, so long as we start teaching them to run north and south instead of looking like ballerinas....that will open up the passing game even more.
