2010 Season 1st Quarter Report

As the first quarter of the 2010 season came to an end Monday night, the league is already very muddled. Who'd have thought the Chiefs would be 3-0 and the Bengals and Colts would be 2-2 or that the Cowboys and Vikings would be 1-2? Not I for one, but some great football has already been played, and some very exciting and important games still to play.

This post will just cover the basic awards, as well as a quick projection of the Super Bowl.

Star-divide

1st Quarter Awards:

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Dez Bryant

Runner Ups: Sam Bradford
                   Demaryius Thomas

This was a tough one, and while Thomas is playing very well, Bryant is just a step ahead of him. He has a TD on a return, and he's playing better in the passing game. Bradford warrants great consideration because of the relative success the Rams are enjoying, and also because for a rookie he's doing a fine job of moving the chains.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Earl Thomas

Runner Ups: Ndamukong Suh
                   Nate Allen

Thomas is proving he is going to have a long career in the NFL. In an incredibly weak Seattle secondary he leads the team, and is tied for the league lead, in interceptions. He is third on his team for tackles and if you watch any Seattle game, he's involved in almost every play. Suh has been a beast and is beginning to live up to his hype and comparisons to Warren Sapp. He has recorded 3 sacks and 15 tackles, and is a very important man for that Detroit team. Allen is playing almost as well as Thomas, plus he has a sack, but he's just a hair behind with fewer tackles, and isn't quite as involved or active as Thomas is.

Offensive Player of the Year: Arian Foster

Runner Ups: Kyle Orton
                   Peyton Manning

I was part of the crowd that thought Foster was a one hit wonder, but he's proving that group wrong pretty quickly. In four games he rushed for over 500 yards, four touchdowns and a 6.3 YPC. He is playing better then Chris Johnson or Adrian Peterson. He is just a monster at this point. Orton and Manning are playing amazing ball, both are on course for career years, an easier thing for Orton then for Manning. Either one could win this award as well, but Fosters electric play wins the award for me.

Defensive Player of the Year: Clay Matthews

Runner Ups: Shaun Philips
                   Nate Allen

Matthews is playing absolutely great football right now with seven sacks over four games. He's physical and a dominant player. We should be grateful we don't play Green Bay this season because Matthews is getting behind the line way too often. Philips is also playing very well, with six sacks and an interceptions to top it off. I kept flipping back and forth between Allen and Thomas, but because Allen has the sack over Thomas, and Thomas already won the DROY award, I'll give Allen the nod.

MVP: Kyle Orton

Runner Ups: Peyton Manning
                   Philip Rivers

Orton has proved that while he can't make miracles every week, the only reason we are even in the game is because of him. He's putting up Pro Bowl numbers behind a line that's given up 11 sacks in 4 games, second most in the NFL behind Cutler, whose out with a concussion. This team wouldn't be 2-2 without Orton. Manning and Rivers are the same case, they're playing some of the best football of their career, but their teams are just failing them. The only reason Manning is overlooked is because does he really need another MVP award?

Super Bowl:

Indianapolis Colts against the Green Bay Packers

Manning will not allow his team to stay at 2-2, he will put in enough work for his whole team and run that marathon alone if he has too. Baltimore and the Steelers warrant consideration, but their offenses are too weak I believe to drive to the Super Bowl. The Packers are playing top notch football, with just one hiccup and a messy game against Chicago. They are playing great football.

It seems so crazy to think that we have already played a quarter of our games.

mindblowing!!!

Anywho… solid picks, I to agree that the Colts will be fine and will still finish atop their division. Same goes for GB. The only pick I might change would be offensive ROY and give it to Bradford just because he has already doubled their win total from last year, although I haven’t seen him play myself.

SB

I like the Texans or Pittsburgh for AFC and NFC is a crapshoot I’ll say Uhhh Green Bay

My projections Denver 11-5, San Diego 10-6, Oakland 9-7, Kansas City 7-9

Nice Maxwellsdemon

I like this feature.

Although, I disagree about the rookie award. I believe that is all Bradford’s, but that’s just my opinion. I can see why you have Dez winning.

Arian Foster is…WOW. Talk about coming from nowhere. He has more yards then we will probably have all year….

I really wish we drafted Clay Matthews….SO bad….

Colts will be fine, but I say they lose in the AFC Championship to the Steelers.

Steelers vs Green Bay for the championship.

Good stuff Max.

agree on Bradford. It’s not even close.

Thanks

It was a real toss up between Bradford and Bryant, and while he has doubled their wins, and for a rookie he’s playing well for a rookie, Bryant is just playing very good football, even for a rookie. As for the Steelers in the Super Bowl, I just don’t think, even with Big Ben, will be enough to put points on the board with offenses like Cincy, NE, Indy or Houston. I could see them in the playoffs though.

I'm with Nick on the ROY.

There is no dominate teams

which makes it really hard to predict who will be in the super bowl … but if I had to predict I would have to say Pittsburgh vs Green Bay.

Bradford, Thomas, Bryant - In that order... But there are others that deserve more credit.

First, Bradford will probably deserve the O-ROY and he will probably get it.

Second, you’re forgetting some other big impact players like Jahvid Best, Jordan Shipley, Ryan Matthews, Marc Mariani, CJ Spiller, and Dexter McCluster.

Third, the stats show that Demaryius Thomas actually seems to be playing better than Dez Bryant.

Dez Bryant:

  • Receiving: Total yards: 158 | Rec: 14 | Avg: 11.3 | TD: 0
  • Kick / Punt Return: Total yards: 89| Avg: 17.8 | TD: 1

Demaryius Thomas:

  • Receiving: Total yards: 149 | Rec: 11 | Avg: 13.5 | TD: 1
  • Kick / Punt Return: Total yards: 144 | Avg: 36.0 | TD: 0

Good point!

I know it’s going to be our MO to spread the ball around, but this kid is amazing. Even with Royal in the slot and Brandon Lloyd catching nearly everything, I would still love for DT to get targeted at least 10 times per game… He’s huge, fast, and can catch!

Take that back...

… The Cowboys had a bye this week.

Shipley and Matthews have played well

But their playtime has been limited compared to some other rookies. I like Best’s speed, but he’s been very inconsistent. As for Bryant over Thomas, Bryant is likely to catch more balls, and had Cox kept the returning job, Thomas probably wouldn’t have his chance. I’m happy with Thomas so far though, so no hating on that pick.

I'd wouldn't mind seeing that

Then again the Raiders beat a lot of good teams last season.

Here's hoping Orton finds a way to get DT in the game this week,

with his height and physicality he just might be the answer on the long ball the Ravens have had troubles with…

Me and Josh McD

Just threw up in our mouths a little bit with Shaun Phillips as DPOY. But he did have a bunch of sacks versus Arizona so I guess he merits this.

Josh McDaniels-All he wants to do is win a MF'in game!

He isn't a likable guy

But he’s been good this season. Plus he’s only a runner up.

Julius Peppers

For DPOY. He doesn’t have the stats but he has revitilized the Bears Defense. If only he could play LT and then he’d be MVP.

The Bears D has benefitted from a number of players

Peppers arrival, as well as the health of Urlacher and Briggs is a big part.
