Wink and the agressive defense....or is it?

I thought I recalled on this site and maybe elsewhere that we would have an agressive defense.  However, it seems to me that is not the case in the passing game; my quesiton is why?

Star-divide

I actually think our defense is doing well against the run and we have a great defensive backfield.  It seems to me that the best way to get some pressure on the QB (without Doom) is to blitz.  We certainly have the DBs to handle this.  Heck, you could have Champ (circa 2005) and Deion (in his prime) playing corner but if you give an NFL QB all day to pass, he will find a receiver.  Give me our current DBs and the responsibility to stay with the receiver just long enough for the blitz to force the action, and I think we would do great.

This isn't a rip on our current defense, I just thought it was going to be a different scheme.

I'm guessing those on this board that have a larger football IQ than me and are better looking, can help me understand this a bit better.  So thanks for any input.

McD said that we run blitzed (both OLB's) 50 or 60 times v the Titans

Plus some very well timed blitzes by Dawk. I’d say we’re plenty aggressive.

The thing I like about our Defense is

that we don’t run the same game plan each week. Against Peyton we didn’t want to blitz because he’ll pick you apart, and against Vince Young you don’t want to blitz because Vince Young will break containment and make you pay. The Broncos blitzed both when good opportunities presented and did a great job of game planing against unique opponents. John Bena broke it down well on MHR radio!!!

I agree about Manning.....

As for Young, we won so hard to argue with the results and we shut them down big time in the 2nd half. But the Broncos have had a tendency over the last few years of sitting back and making very average and below average QBs look top-tier (see Russell). But what about Jax and Seattle? Again, I’m not really arguing real hard for it, I’m just trying to understand.

Here's my take

I’ve been harping about this quite a bit lately…they aren’t being aggressive overall. I did definitely see a few more vs Tenn than I did in the 1st three games, and I’ve been watching for it on 3rd down consistently.

We previously ran some blitzes using mainly LBs in the A and B gaps from what I’ve seen and it hasn’t been effective. They like to send Ayers (though I usually wouldn’t consider him a blitzer since he’s typically the 4th guy, not the 5th) and he looks good on the edge. What we are missing is a similar threat from the other side of the formation and why we miss Doom so much…he’s such a superb pass rusher from the edge that he can create pressure and sacks just from being there on 3rd down.

They used Dawkins this past week I think twice and it worked. He played it perfect and it was a perfect call for 3rd and long. I look forward to more of these aggressive calls in the near future.

Has Moss gone into the witness protection program?

tough for moss

We’ve had two game plans in a row that haven’t had room for him. For Indy, we were in nickel or dime the entire game, which means there wasn’t much room for OLB, period. For Tennessee, the OLB job was to run-blitz, which isn’t Moss’s skill set either.

I think a lot of it has to do with timing

Like sadaraine said, 3rd down is where you should see it the most and 3rd and 7+ yards in particular, just to force the punt. I believe McD wants to mainly get pressure with the base D. Of course since we are missing Doom we aren’t seeing sacks.

I believe his kid we picked up on PS (Diyral Briggs)

is a better option at OLB than Moss, as would be this kid just released by the Bears (Mark Anderson). This kid Briggs is gonna get snapped up soon, he has an excellent burst and a powerful push. He should’ve made the lineup for SF. We need to protect him! We have an excellent nucleus of core players on D. If we continue to add quality depth we will be a force very soon. This Kevin Vickerson was huge addition as was Jackson. Just “piece by piece”…we’re very close.

I'm not really sure what Wink is going to bring to be honest,

and that is a good thing. By week 4 or 5 most teams had figured out our defense last year. This year we are adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of the offense we are playing. Just as an example, the run blitzing against CJ. It was a great gameplan, and our D was awesome last week party because of the gameplan.

Whenever you blitz, you leave a hole in coverage that a smart QB can exploit.

Just saying. It has to be used strategically. There’s a fine line between aggressive and reckless.

I don't disagree....

..but there was a lot of chatter on this board before the season about how much more aggressive we would be with Wink on board…..I just don’t see us as more aggressive on pass plays. I am guessing there are many teams that blitz more than we do and I don’t believe they have the DB quality that we have. I would like to see it on third and long in particular.

Maybe it changed when Doom went down.

Having Doom draw double teams would make blitzing with other guys more effective. You take him out and now the other team can pick-up the blitz easier and then burn it.

McDaniels Monday presser talks about D philosophy. Basically, they want to stop the run, prevent big plays and make teams drive 10-12 plays to score. Blitzing would create big play opportunities for the other team.

Our D doesn’t have the talent that BAL or NYJ has in the front 7 so I don’t think blitz packages are wise against all QBs. Maybe we will blitz more vs. young QBs like Sanchez.

I agree we haven't put on that much pressure.

But it has been by design. As someone stated, the game against the Colts, we didn’t want to blitz and have Peyton find the open man, Against the Titans, we hit the run blitzes hard, then sagged to contain VY. We weren’t throwing a ton of guys towards him, because he hurts people with his feet more often than he does with his arm.

I think Wink wanted to force Young to pass for the victory. And Wink succeeded. VY couldn’t get it done through the air. Which isn’t exactly rocket science or all that surprising. I would expect other people will be trying a similar game plan against the Titans in the coming weeks.
