For Broncos castoffs Hillis and Smith, a change of scenery works - The Denver Post
Just outside the Broncos' locker room, next to the mailboxes piled high with best wishes and the hopes for an autograph, is a rather ordinary-looking staircase. But in all the years Rod Smith played for the Broncos, he never wanted to set foot on those steps.

The Prater home outside Fort Myers, Fla., was the perfect place for an aspiring kicker, especially after the family cleared a 60-yard field and erected a set of goalposts on the 10-acre property.

Star-divide

Coach's ability might be what's truly impaired - The Denver Post
"When coach Josh McDaniels came in and blew up a decent Broncos team, McSmartypants was announcing he knew more than Mike Shanahan, Denver fans and the NFL establishment. When you take that path, there is one condition: You better be right. The only thing that can save Josh now is Tim Tebow becoming a star, which is about as likely as Randy Moss becoming a solid citizen."

Williams won't start - The Denver Post
Broncos star linebacker D.J. Williams has been stripped of his team captaincy, fined nearly $15,000 by the team and told he will not start today's game against the Kansas City Chiefs as punishment for his arrest early Friday morning on suspicion of drunk driving.

The Minnesota Vikings didn't activate the wide receiver from the physically unable to perform list before the 4 p.m. ET deadline Saturday, according to a league source. It could be an indication that Rice, who had hip surgery in late August, wants another week to recover.

NFL.com news: Patriots rule out RB Taylor, three others vs. Steelers
New England Patriots running back Fred Taylor has been ruled out of Sunday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers because of toe injuries to both feet.

NFP Sunday Blitz | National Football Post
Back in the mid-80s I remember a couple of big ball boys hanging around the Bears. They were there in training camp and on game days. They seemed to fit right in with that wild team that belonged to Mike Ditka and Jim McMahon, always having fun and partaking in some give and take with the players.

NFL Week 10 Picks including Patriots-Steelers, Ravens-Falcons - Peter King - SI.com
Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) at Denver Broncos (2-6) Very bad matchup for the Broncs. Chiefs rushing for 5.0 per carry, Denver allows 4.6 per carry. Expect a grind-it-out win for KC, and be happy if you employ Jamaal Charles or Thomas Jones in fantasyland.

Thanks for reminding me why I can't stand Kiszla.

He is actually saying we were a good team when McD got here? How do these guys keep their jobs with an analysis that is a mile wide and only an inch deep?

Oddly, I think he was right on

We were a decent team. The problem is that decent teams in the NFL go 7-9 to 9-7 year after year and keep throwing a couple big splash free agents or rookies who “really look like a veteran.” Rinse and repeat until either the coach is gone or you end up losing a critical piece and falling apart, then the coach is gone.

The problem is that decent does not equal Super Bowl. But Kizsla doesn’t want to work hard enough to actually do anything more than spew negative commentary about a coach who he thinks is some young whippersnapper that cannot do the job. Anything more is too much effort. He doesn’t want to point out accurately that Torian IS injured too much. That Wegman looked pretty awesome till about game 10 for the Broncos when he and Hamilton spent most of the rest of the season 3 steps deep in the backfield.

Hillis and Smith might have been too soon. But I suspect based on what Harris commented that Smith and Hillis earned their way out of town.

Horrible crop of DP articles this morning...just garbage.

I wish I could fine the various DP writers for wasting my time on an early Sunday morning.

I hear a lot about Smith's 5 ints...

But has anyone ever mentioned how many tackles he has made or missed? Has anyone mentioned how many TDs he’s given up?

I liked Smith a lot, but there were real reasons he was traded. It was not just smoke and mirrors and it wasn’t a personality thing. He started last season as the nickle corner back on the team. He lost that job through on field and in practice performance.

And unless I’m mistaken, Ryan Torain was out of football all of last year. No one offered him a job until Shanny came back. I guess the third time was the charm for him. But to blame Mc Daniels is a real reach. Its not ike there was any film of his pro level achievements in two years time.

This

I have said this from the games I have watched of Detroit. Smith is looking into the backfield too much and focusing on stats. He IS making tackles which is an improvement, but a lot are in the trail position where he uses decent speed to catch the guy and he still doesn’t wrap up right. He doesn’t do the shoulder slam that really drives me nuts, but he doesn’t seem to want to use good technique either.

I admit that this is maybe 10 quarters of games this year, plus 2 AWFUL plays on the RedZone channel that Scott mentioned him as being burned. But this is enough to make me think that it is fine to say good bye.

Prater is a wierd one, but I can't say I don't dig it...
Q: I know you’re a superstitious guy. What are some of your game-day quirks?

A: I always have to have these wristbands I wear and a necklace, only wear during the game. Won’t step on the lines unless I have to. With the water-bottle holders that hold six of them, I’ll only drink out of the ones in the middle. That’s the most random. I also never step on the Bronco logo at the facility, or even the big team logo in the stadium. I’ll walk around it.

So no sooner do I

shelve an idea for questioning a players attitude as being the critical component to trading them, than Jeff Legwold goes out to source quotes from Hillis and Smith that indicate attitude may indeed have held them back in Denver. I always worried that Hillis took the idea that he wasn’t one of “McD’s guys” too far, and it has often been stated that Smith had zero psychological resiliency. Smith seems clueless to the fact that it wasn’t just that he failed to do something and so would come out of a game…they guy who replaced him played better. Both he and Hillis seem to struggle with the concept of competition.

So maybe there is legs to the theory after all…
