Todd Haley Refuses Post-Game Handshake With Josh McDaniels

DENVER - NOVEMBER 14: Head coach Todd Haley of the Kansas City Chiefs has some unwelcome words with head coach Josh McDaniels of the Denver Broncos as he refuses to shake his hand after the Broncos 49-29 win at INVESCO Field at Mile High on November 14 2010 in Denver Colorado. The Denver Broncos defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 49-29. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

For some reason, Chiefs Head Coach refused to shake Josh McDaniels' hand, choosing instead to point a finger at McDaniels, and scold him - like McDaniels broke curfew or took the car without asking.

Is it because the replay booth wasn't working early in the game?  It appeared the call was correctly called a TD on the field.  Later, a catch by Brandon Lloyd that was called incomplete, but, upon review, was reveresed and Lloyd was credited with a touchdown.  Either way, it was classless.

Need proof?  Here it is on video:

How do you know what was said?

If it would have been McDaniels doing it i would have thought he must have had a good reason for doing it, and not just speculate about it until there’s proof. Whether i agreed with it or not i wouldn’t be saying what been said here.

I understand it was a big win, great for you guys. I just think we should wait until what was really said and why it happened comes out. At this point i have to support my Teams coach, now if it comes out that he was being a complete ass, then I’ll have something to say about it.

Belicheck actually explained it in his press conference

Because teh whole Mangini handshake thing was so fresh at the time, Josh and Bill talked before teh game and agreed to get the handshake out of the way before the game started, so that it wouldn’t be a big media event when it went to midfield.

Even better, one of the MHR reporters actually discovered a bunch of the private texts between McD and Belicheck, which gives great insight into their relationship…

Bad way to prove it has happened before, and completely different from what happened on the field today. But it wasn’t meant in a bad way, i was trying to show it had happened before and that it was your coach doing it. Should have taken the subject of the video more seriously.

I wouldn't care about it if McD did

Because it’s a handshake. McD has experienced it before either at the HS, college or Pro level. At this point in most coaches lives, I’m sure a handshake ranks low on his priority list of things he cares about.

I think the end result

proved running up the score was a VERY good idea.

by droom on Nov 14, 2010 6:25 PM MST up reply actions

my problem with this

1) They were not running up the score. Going for it on 4th down was to end the game, and the scores before that were all completely fine.

2) If the Chiefs did not want to keep playing football and wanted the game to end then they should have kicked the ball off. If they want to keep playing football then they are going to be required to stop the other team.

3) If you think the play should be overturned then you throw the flag. Why else is the system there. No matter what the score is, you play the game properly and challenging calls that you think are bad is playing properly

Haley has always been a coach that acts on his emotions (Mcdaniels is similar as well) and he will continue doing this. Part of it are the fist pumps and what not the other part are temper tantrums.

Classless through and through but that is part of Haley’s character (to act on emotions and think with his brain later, which you could see in his press conference).

by DW76 on Nov 14, 2010 6:30 PM MST up reply actions

Running up the score in the NFL can lead to negative consequences later in the season..

Especially when you have to go into a tough location late in the year. Football is played on emotion, emotion controls actions in this sport more than any other and disrespecting a team is just inviting them to get amped up next time they face you.

@charliedrysdale

by Charlie77 on Nov 14, 2010 6:34 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

No chance

Look, that was not running up the score. The last score was a 15 yard pass when up by 27. When your on the other teams 15 and they are playing 8 in the box, do you end the game with a TD pass or do you walk off the field with the game still 4 scores away. As you say the Chiefs were capable of getting half those points anyways.

The game was on life support, but on their 15 you smash it in and put an end to the stupidity that the last 2 minutes was.

Like I said, if the Chiefs are going to cry about running up the score, then they need to look into the mirror and ask why they were doing onside kicks. If you want to keep playing then let’s play ball. If you want the game to end with the current score then let’s end the game. You don’t have it both ways.

The next game in KC will be a huge game in the division no matter what. They got their butts whipped in the first 15 minutes. Emotions are going to be at an all time high, and it has nothing at all to do with the last 5 minues

by DW76 on Nov 14, 2010 6:46 PM MST up reply actions

From what I've heard Haley felt like McDaniels was running it up on him or at least trying too.

Week 17 of last year Haley pulled the starters in the 4th qtr of that 44-24 game. To be respectful for the Bronco’s and their coach, now expecting the same respect from McDaniels in this game yet he didn’t get it. Yes maybe Haley should have said no mercy next time while shaking hands, but i can’t blame him for not doing it.

Up by 35 in the 2nd

and a final spread of 20 points is running up the score? And only 2 more touchdowns added to that 35 points over the next 35 minutes? Certainly not the definition I learned.

BTW, quite disappointed to read the remarks of your fellow fans on the corresponding thread over at AP. The majority of their reactions have exposed them as a very classless lot.

The Broncos were in no man’s land around the KC 35 late in the fourth quarter. In every football I have watched with similar circumstances, the team on offense leading by a large margin goes for it. Get over it, Haley.

Unfortunately, the situation below has become worse during the 2010 season.

Really Tim? Classless?

If Haley had a reason to not shake his hand it must have been a good one then. To even be talking about it like this until all the fact’s are known is slanderous. It is the Cold and Flu season after all, sure wouldn’t want to get any more players not on the field next week:P

Just so you know here’s a list of starters out of the game. B.Waters LG, B.Richardson RT, D.McCluster WR/RB/KR/PR, J.McGraw FS, K.Lewis FS, and both J.Charles and T.Jones are banged up. The Chiefs are now going thru what the Broncos went thru the first half of the season. The Broncos had 2 weeks to game plan as well as get healthy for the first time this year

IMO to say the Chiefs are in a Monumental collapse is ridiculous, so you kicked our ass today, the same thing happened last year as well. I know i sure didn’t count this game as a win for us, just because you guys were at home with 2 weeks rest. I do know this though, i would’ve never said something like that about Denver 2 weeks ago even at the AP. Because IMO that would be Classless!!

Yeah Good win

Took us out of our game plan in the first quarter. It just seemed to me that the 2 weeks off help the Broncos big time, and the Chiefs after playing 2 tough game 2 weeks in a row looked like a tired team.

No excuses here

We got beat by a team that had 2 weeks off to get healthy, and play like should be playing. I never thought this was a win for the Chiefs anyways, infact i thought we would lose. Some people tend to forget that the Chiefs are a team that is rebuilding and that they only won 4 games last year. I’m no kool-aid drinker so you won’t here any bragging from me on any site as well as the AP.

The Chiefs were a 4-12 team last year.

You act like you just won the Super-Bowl, I’m sorry that ass whoopin the Raiders gave you had so down on your team. I’ve said all along that the Broncos would be playing better around the middle of the season.
Last year when we beat the Broncos 44-24 at least T.Haley pulled his starters in the 4th quarter and showed some character.

He shook hands because he was show respect, by the Chiefs not running the score up

J.Charles was 30 some yards away from the rushing record, and we could have scored more points in that game as well. But we didn’t and we pulled our starters then to show some class and respect for your team, so i don’t blame Haley for being pissed when he got no respect in return. I think the wrong person is being called a douchebag be hey that just my opinion.

Last comment,

1) we played a loose defense, even on your main man during blitzes, when we know the ball is coming out quick. This was not our usual close man coverage..thus your receiver gets about 186 yards . Champ played off 10 yards after the lead went over 21 points. This was to entice passing (away from your strength), but also, considering your past lack of a truly effective passing attack, it probably would have been worse if we linked the aggressive coverage with the blitzes. Be happy we were’nt really rying to run up the margin of victory. WE looked content to just keep pace with your scoring.
2) It’s not our job to protect your coach/team’s feelings. We have to heal our own wounds, and I might add there there was a handshake even after the debacle with oakland 2 weeks ago.
3) SInce you wis to transfer the blame from your coach’s poor choice to ours, I guess I will be3 on your “*” in comments every chance I get, so forget the last comment thing I referred to above.
4) Sorry you wore out your welcome with me, Caveman. You really should not try to defend poor behavior, especially by using the rather child-like trick of “well he did (or said) something first”. Your coach should have risen above his feelings of being slighted, as should have you. Your last sentence is a classic.
5) Douchebag??? GTH, caveman, and don’t expect any handshake from me.

Be happy you weren't really trying to run the score up,lol.

I could have said the same thing about week 17 of last year, when we could have ran the score up on you guys but Haley showed your team and coach respect by pulling our starters in the 4th qtr. I guess Haley was wrong for expecting the same type of respect back from McDaniels.
2- T.Cable also pulled his starters in that game as well or the score would have been worse, but i guess McDaniels doesn’t have to show that type of respect to anyone, he’s better than that right.
3- If the shoe was on the other foot everyone in here would be saying McDaniels must have had a good reason to not do it, and i would expect nothing less from you guys, so for whatever reason he chose to not do it i have to stand by him at this point.
4- Sorry you feel that way about me, but i can’t sit here and not defend my coach just because it’s your blog. Haley showed McDaniels by pulling out starters in our last game, and expected the same in return spin it however you like but the point is McDaniels didn’t show Haley respect so he got none in return. If we had continued to score in our last meeting which we could have also i would have said shit about your coach not shaking my coaches hand after the game because he deserved the slight if he would have done so.
5- Yeah it gets you pissed off a little bit when someone calls your coach a bad name, will if you haven’t noticed it my coach is being attacked here.

You can try to defend all you want

but the fact of the matter is that Haley showed his true colors….when the shoes on the other foot he cant take it like a man….he turns into a petualnt child and a poor sport…..I just hope it rubs off on your young and impressionable team….it would be great to watch a team full of Cutlers in 3 weeks :):)

well caveman..your coach woke up before you did.

His statement reminds me of my last sentence from point 4 above. I repeat…..defending this was beneath you, but you persisted, and now you have worn out your welcome with me. Support of team is one thing, but support of simple wrong actions crosses the line. Your coach at least has the balls to appologize.
Another thing (since I am going to be riding you for time and all eternity), don’t bring up anybody elses insults when respsonding to me….I don’t use those, never have. The things I will say are directly to you, and directly in response to your words. This doesn’t even have much to do with Broncos vs Chiefs. There is no simple right/wrong for our interaction here, as long as I stay within the lines, so…….. don’t expect a handshake, but I suggest you mentally bow before each match…it’s protocol in many martial arts.

Karma is not necessarily real. There is hardly any proof of this. Some people believe in it and some people don’t. So it is fair to say that Karma will have the same impact on any games this season as the tooth fairy.

I don't know what it was about.

But if I’m a coach i keep scoring points if i can until the game is over. Not only that but this game gave McD a chance to work on the run game with all the starters for the first time.

I would have to agree with that

This whole running up the score thing is absolute BS, there are 2 highly paid NFL teams out there, if one of them doesn’t want the other to put 50 points on the board then stop them. We got our ass handed to us by the Raiders, the last thing I was worried about was the “running up the score argument” more power to them if they score 100 then that is our problem not theirs. It’s the NFL I wish they would all quit the pissing and moaning about running up the score, there is no reason an NFL team should pull their starters in my mind, ever for any reason. you score as many points as you can until the 60 minutes is up period the end!

I live in the KC area and I have to tell you the sports radio talk this morning is more than agravating, the Chiefs got their ass handed to them plain and simple, it happens, get over it, we didn’t run the score up, the Chiefs just didn’t stop us from scoring.

by Stuman on Nov 15, 2010 8:29 AM MST up reply actions

What are people referring too?

Anyone who says he was running up the score has no clue what they are talking about.

1) The last score was a 15-yard pass. It was one pass play sprinkles in with numerous run plays. At the point of the TD is was a 27 point game. After this TD the Chiefs scored 14 points. So if the fans had their way and Mcdaniels stopped scoring, then the Chiefs would have been 2 scores from winning after their 2 TDs.

Obviously the game was out of hand, but if you go and ask any NFL fan in the world this question. With your opponent 4 TDs away from winning the game, you have the ball on their 15, do you punch it in and end the game or do you act “classy” and keep the other team within 4 scores of victory?

2) The 4th down play is the exact opposite of running up the score. It was designed to end the game so that a team with horrific injury problems this season can get off the field healthy

No excuses in my opinion for this type of complaining

Haley is an a-hole

Not piling on here, but its so obvious watching the close shots of him. Every time I watchim I notice:

- he doesn’t wear a headset much of the time, really seems like involved in nothing of play calling
- absolute psychotic screaming, really seems off his rocker all game
- doesn’t really seem to interect with the team, every other coach is surrounded by players and coaches, he always seems to be by himself

My impression was that Weis and Crennel run this team, wouldn’t be surprised to see a player revolt at some point….

At some point if the Chiefs want to be taken seriously as a playoff team

Then they are going to need to stop crying about games like this. For a guy who learned under Bill Parcells this is pathetic. Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy, Lombardi, Parcells, Belicheck and whoever else you want to name would never act like a child.
They would sit their team down and say “thats pathetic, pull your heads out of your as* and show some pride”

At some point every mediocre team trying to be great will need to develop this type of mentality. The mentality that we are responsible for our actions and we need to change the way we approach the game. we can no longer ask for mercy we need to be the team showing no mercy

I have to mention...

When Jokeland damn near put up a 60-burger on us recently, McDaniels didn’t get himself into a snit against Tom Cable – who CLEARLY relished running up the score on us.

I have to assume this is because the bottom line is the Broncos played like crap and DESERVED to be destroyed. That loss was the fault of nobody but the Denver Broncos players and staff. So it is this week with the Chefs.

They played hard, scoring a couple of touchdowns in garbage time, but it wasn’t good enough. Those are the breaks. it happens to every team eventually. Man up, look in the mirror, adapt and improve.

That’s sports. That’s life.

Great googley mogley – who are the Chefs?

by TheMastermind on Nov 14, 2010 7:03 PM MST reply actions

Exactly

I hated that game and while Cable did the right thing at the end of the game to not further run up teh score, much of the rest of that game could be compared to this one. And yet McD shook hands with Cable after it was over and was polite, even as pissed as he must have been about the game. Haley’s reaction just seemed really immature to me.

Yes

Lloyd mentioned it earlier this week. It means “You can’t see me.”

It is a self motivational thing, getting yourself in the one the whole game, where you believe you can catch anything.

I feel better, but still not good.

Yep

“They can’t see us, they can’t cover us.” It is a signal of motivation between the Receivers and Kyle. Also known as “Swagger”

Lloyd Said ...

Brandon, what’s up the hand thing? First I saw (Jabar) Gaffney doing it after a catch, now it seems that you are also doing it. Being 2-6, I really don’t see how you and Gaffney think you are in anyone’s face? Great you made a catch, put the ball down and get back to the huddle.
— Evan, Arvada

BL: We tend not to do it when we are down by a lot of points. It’s a mindset and motivation. What the hand motion means is that the people guarding us can’t see us. We feel we can get open and make the plays and make the catches.

It’s not meant to be derogatory or offensive or showboating. That’s just how we get motivated for the game none of these guys out here can see us, none of these guys can compete with us.

I saw this moment too and wondered, WTF, did I miss something?

As I said above it just seemed if not classless, than really immature. Btw, the Chiefs started to come back a bit late in the game, not enough to make it close but where you could say if the Broncos didn’t score those last 2 TDs it would’ve been even closer. What else is he supposed to do? It’s not like they tried to kick a field goal late or something.

And to be honest with you

even if the Chiefs did quit who cares, what the other team does or does not do should have no bearing on how we play our game. You want to quit, go for it we are going to keep scoring points. We only won by 20 for crying out loud, that is less than 3 touchdowns

by Stuman on Nov 15, 2010 8:49 AM MST up reply actions

Exactly

Also, with only 45 men on the active roster, it would be pretty difficult to not keep at least some starters in the game, especially along the offensive line where we dress only 7 or 8 offensive linemen at a time. This isn’t like college where you can go 4 deep on our roster.

They basically told me to be respectful in their house. In return, I said Todd should have respected our Broncos in our house. I said he was a poor loser and probably went too far by saying he was a piece of sh**. And I stand by it. I said we were 6-0 last year, then lost, yet “Mr. Arrogant” (Coach McDaniels) never acted so classless.

And yes, they deleted my comments, replies and re-replies. My only regret is that I never gave them a chance to soak in the loss. That was probably extra rude to not let ‘em get over it a little bit first. But their coach is still a jack-ass. That won’t change with time.

I don't think I'll get banned, or I hope not

I keep the rules and while I do disagree with people, I don’t swear, attack personally or let it get out of hand. I can understand disagreement, which is fine, that’s what makes NFL and SB Nation sites great, is that usually people can express their opinions without fear, sometimes you may get called a troll, but hey, it’s the internet.

And I am so happy that all the defense of this team I did over the break paid off. I understand that at this point MHR is going to be the exact opposite, any negative points now will be seen poorly here. I don’t think this is right, but I can understand where that mentality comes from. Sometimes it’s just easier to grin and bear it. Broncos ripped it up today, let’s keep it going!

Go Broncos!

by super7 on Nov 14, 2010 9:04 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

I FLIPPIN LOVE IT

Todd Haley can go pack sand, for all I care. The Cheifs didn’t stop playing, so we didn’t either. Forget that they scored twice late in the game. Forget that they tried TWO onside kicks. He’s essentially saying he’s ticked that we didnt lay down and put our backups in the game.

In my opinion, this will be an everalsting chip on McDaniels’ shoulder to beat the tar out of Todd Haley every time he faces him. Show no mercy. I said from the outset of the game, if we are able to play offense like we did on the first drive throughout the game, I wouldn’t pull my foot off the gas until the 4th quarter was said and done. I wish we’d scored EVERY time we had the ball. He should be thankful his run D finally became competent on the last two drives, because I was hoping Knowshon would run the ball in for another score.

I was calling for pick six and doing my touchdown dance until the final whistle. Haley is just a poor sportsman, and has been dating back to his cardinals days. He and the Chiefs can bathe in this one for a while. We play again this year, and this was a great win for the Denver Broncos.

He can shove it.

Hey T.Haley said he did it because he was pissed about the score be run up?

Or because of dirty hits or whatever you can think of? So at this point it’s all your opinions that being based as facts.

I didn't see any 'dirty hits' that weren't called

Go back and watch the Broncos Raiders game or the Titans Broncos, and tell me that McD shouldn’t have been pissed about some hits in those games. Then go back and watch McD shake both coaches hands like a grown up.

I think Super 7 nailed it, a rich kid acting like rich kids do at times, petulant.

by jibbons on Nov 14, 2010 11:03 PM MST up reply actions

At this point no one knows why it happened or why it happen.

So why say bad thing about someone before the facts are known. Maybe McDaniels said something smartass to Haley right before the hand shake, maybe it was McDaniels fault for Haley not shaking his hand. I could just make up all kinds of reasons, but why do it.

by CPT.Caveman on Nov 14, 2010 11:23 PM MST up reply actions

Cause your coach won't fess up to why he acted like a spoiled sport,

so it is left up to our imaginations.

Your imagination is looking pretty vivid right now by the way, searching for reasons to blame McDaniels for being snubbed.

No need to speculate

who cares why, the fact is McD offered his hand, and Haley didn’t and chose instead to shake his finger at him. No need to speculate that is what happened. Regardless of why that is acting like a spoiled sport.

by Stuman on Nov 15, 2010 9:09 AM MST up reply actions

I understand why you’re trying to defend your coach, but there’s really no defending him here. As a guy, you understand that this was nothing but disrespectful, insulting, and poor sportsmanship, despite whatever “justification” Haley might think he has.

Attempting to defend the indefensible just makes you look the fool- give it up. Accept the fact that your coach acted like an ass- don’t take on the mantle by trying to defend him.

by AllBroncsallday on Nov 15, 2010 9:40 AM MST up reply actions

Week 17 of last year.

T.Haley pulls the starters in the 4th qtr of that game to be respectful to show good sportsmanship, and to not be a douche bag. So expecting that same kind of respect Haley was offended when McDaniels was still throwing it deep and calling time-outs with under 2 minutes to go in the game. So yes i can see why he didn’t shake his hand nor would i have shaken it, but thats just my opinion.

he dodged the question by saying that that is a private moment between coaches.

A private moment surrounded by thousands of fans, dozens of cameras, and millions of fans.

I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be.

by grind_core on Nov 15, 2010 6:56 AM MST reply actions

I'll start again. - Haley was wrong not to shake McD's hand - that was poor.

But I can see his point. Last season in a blowout they started pulling starters once the game was effectively over. The Raiders also took their starters out 3 weeks ago.

We didn’t when given the same opportunity. I’m a little disapointed and while I don’t believe in karma I think we have set ourselves up for a nasty fall in Arrowhead.

Also if one of our starters had been in jured in garbage time what would you all have been saying?

I guess that makes me in the minority here – sorry – but I think we could have showed better showmanship. Also by running more at the end we would have taken enough time off the clock to prevent at least one of those KC TD’s that flattered them at the end.

What would Blackie Lawless do?

by British Bronco on Nov 15, 2010 8:44 AM MST up reply actions

I understand your point

And yeah, I wouldve been pissed if someone got hurt seriously, but this Denver team still needs help in a lot of areas. I have no problem keeping the starters in and trying to work on the run game etc, etc. Id rather let them work out the kinks during a blowout as opposed to getting blownout (Raiders game)

I really want to see R.Quinn in the game. If Denver wastes another draft pick on a TE I’m gonna freak out. I wouldve had no problem having him sub in for Graham and Gronk.
But having the majority of the starting unit in the game doenst bother me.
Maybe he was and I missed it. Was he active?

Its anchorman not anchorlady. And that is a scientific FACT!

by johnnystarr on Nov 15, 2010 9:46 AM MST up reply actions

Quinn was not inactive as best I remember.

There was a reasonable case I think for keeping in our OL starters. They need as much time together as possible. And damn did they look good as a unit or what!

To be fair I saw some of our defensive 2nd teamers come into the game late on. Not sure they did much mind – I would like to see more of Kyle McCarthy – but right now he is looking like PS fodder.

What would Blackie Lawless do?

by British Bronco on Nov 15, 2010 9:59 AM MST up reply actions

But I do agree that the starters on defense need to get younger. Guys like McBath, Cox, Thompson are the future.

Bullcrap

Hailey didn’t pull his starters and he was trying to win the game.

If he’s trying to win shouldn’t we try to win too? Or should we just let them back in the game.

We won by 20…. Probably could have won by more than that.

As far as division rivals go, I’ve always had less antipathy for the chiefs than for the chargers and Raiders. But, when your coach acts without class like this, it just lowers the entire team a couple spots.
But we just killed ya, so I can’t muster up that much indignation. Go slink back to KC, and keep your version of “New England, AFC West”. Our version won this round.
