Handshake Question

I don't get to watch the games on tv so maybe you all can help me out!?

Star-divide

So as for the handshake fiasco that sounds like it is currently brewing. My opinion is who really cares, we won, something as insignificant as not shaking hands post game seems kind of insignificant. I think people should worry more about how poorly our defense played than how an emotional and loyal coach handled a 5 second exchange.

But any way. I was reading an article on the Denver Post and it mentioned...

"Haley said he saw some things on the Denver sideline as the time ran out that he didn't appreciate."

Read more: Chiefs coach Haley blows off postgame handshake with Broncos' McDaniels - The Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_16613378#ixzz15Jwlm2Z1

I live in NY and I rarely get to watch the games other than following them on NFL.com game center. So I was hoping maybe some of you who were watching the game maybe caught something on the side line that would have made Coach Haley react like this?
If our team was doing something dumb like rudely and over-zealously celebrating, I would be more mad at us. I feel like we are a 3-6 team and should show some humility after a win. Especially because we are still last in the division. If that is the case (that we were doing some kind of dumb post game side line celebration) I think we were in the wrong. You have to earn the right to celebrate and show boat a little bit, and based on our record I don't think we deserve that right yet.

But if we weren't doing anything like that, well than that whole rant really doesn't mean anything lol.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I respectfully disagree with your assertion.

Haley was a hothead a-hole with the Cardinals and remains so with the Chiefs in my opinion. We have been struggling and if you will remember, the CLASSY thing to do would be to take your medicine like a man as we did against the Raiders when they spanked us. McDaniels went over and shook the hand of Coach Cable if I remember correctly.
Make no excuses for classless behavior from a head coach like Haley…

Exactly

who in the hell would take up for him anyway? He is/always has been an ill tempered, little petulant child. What he did today was unexcusable and should not be tolerated within coaching circles. Tony Dungy said it perfect, “If you’re gonna point your finger at anybody, point it at your team for playing so poorly.” What a douchey waste of flesh. If he’s mad at us for running up the score, there’s a simple solution, stop us.

A main focus for our team this week was having a good time, and being loose. This was our teams first divisional, home win in 2 years. Let them have a good time and enjoy the moment, cause when Monday rolls around, it’s distant history. Screw Todd Haley, don’t ever feel the need to take up for this waste of flesh.

I just saw a lot of guys relieved to get a win

I shared in that emotion. i thought the team relaxed a bit and had some fun. If you score 49 points you can celebrate a bit, losing by that much hurts, but no one cares if your feelings got hurt. Ask the Raiders if they felt bad about pummeling the broncos? losing reveals certain things. I think the broncos organization and players always have behaved well following losses, i think Haley will get over it though.

by bertsce on Nov 14, 2010 9:30 PM MST reply actions

Yeah, probably some guys on the Broncos were being obnoxious

But hey, when you lose bad, all bets are off. Just ask us against the Raiders.

I guarantee you

if the Chiefs got up on us, like we did on them today, their players would have done the same thing and Todd Haley would’ve seen no fault in it. SORE LOSER!!!!!!!!

by PaleHorse78 on Nov 14, 2010 10:28 PM MST up reply actions

He was just embarrased at the margin of victory

There was nothing going on the sideline that would cause offense. I don’t care if the players were celebrating or not, nothing like that should be enough to ‘enrage’ an opposing coach. It’s Mr. Haley that needs to take a lesson in humility not the Denver Broncos. Besides, I think the team deserved to blow off some steam and celebrate a win.

Bottom line, who give a flying fidoo what the hell Haley thinks. He’s a classless act and is now trying to cover up what appeared to be an emotionally charged face off with the opposing coach.

It takes neither courage nor intelligence to cheer for a team only when that team wins. The true test of a fan's mettle is the same as it is for a player: Were you there when you were needed?

Its very easy to just shake hands

Football is football. There’s a picture of a chiefs player trying to rip moreno’s head off in the pile, that’s just the game. There’s stuff no one sees but after the game everyone is watching and just shake hands and go get your team ready for next week.

by bertsce on Nov 14, 2010 9:32 PM MST reply actions

The jury is still out on who is the better coach...

But the picture proves who is the better man!

I agree—it’s just not that hard to shake hands and move on.

When all is said and done this year

with the Chiefs sitting at 6-10, while the Broncos are at 10-6, we’ll all see who the better coach is. As for the better man, McD hands down.

You call it classless.

From what I see, it’s the coach from one division rival not reciprocating the courtesies of another division rival coach is showing. He may dislike it, he may hate the loss, and no doubt, what McDaniel did was classy, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a division rival.

I mean, seriously, you wrote up a long piece about how Broncos fans hate the Raiders and how McDaniels didn’t understand that hatred (not the author of this fanpost, mind). When another division coach shows the kind of hatred or anger you expect out of your coach and players for a third team in the division, you call it classless? Guys, I call that divisional rivalry and that kind of anger Haley displayed, I really wish I could see from other coaches as well in this age of public relations.

I’d certainly hate Marvin Lewis a lot less if he showed some sort of spark or emotion and especially bitterness towards other teams in the division. Too bad he’s an ex-Squeelers coach and no one can forget the 2000 Ravens defense.

Rival-Smival...

He is classLESS. He needs to grow up, man up, and take the loss, be a leader of men and show them that they got thier butt’s kicked, now let’s get back to work. this childish division rival crap means very little as EVERY game is important.
Shake hands, and get ready for next week.

Great points Doc

It is kind of funny because in the past couple weeks the Chiefs were seen as the classy team in the division and the one we rooted for more then the Chargers or Raiders, how quickly people can change. It wasn’t a nice thing to do that’s for sure though.

McDaniels

In all of the controversy about McDaniel in his short tenure in Denver there is one thing that strikes me. He is a gentleman. What is said on the sideline about winning a MF game doesn’t count; that is passion in the heat of battle. But before and after games and in other settings he is a gentleman and that is something worthwhile. Haley is anything but that. Maybe Haley will help motivate the Broncos when they are at Arrowhead.

by NZbronco on Nov 14, 2010 10:00 PM MST reply actions

what about that issue with the chargers last year

Don’t remember all the deatils, but it prompted some player to say that Players should be able to fight coaches. I think it was McDaniel’s saying, “…We own you”

Sorta in the heat of battle, sorta not.

Just a small counter example, overall, I agree very sportsmanlike

The SD player reported it out of context.

Player bragged about beating the Broncos, and McD responded by reminding the player that his Patriots owned the Chargers.

Ok My opinion is....

This is not peewee football so if he chose not to shake his hand then , big deal.
That being said, does it make him a prick? maybe

If he’s justified and sticking up for his players then that is all together different. There are lots of reasons to be pissed. Orton playing the whole game, challenging the Bowe catch on the 1, the 2 pt conversion TO, or just flat out getting your butt kicked are good reasons to be pissed but that was something more. If McD was taunting Chief players on the sidelines (as is being reported) then THAT is truly classless and Haley is justified in snubbing him.

reported where exactly?

The story the OP linked to references an unquoted quote of Haley as its evidence of “bad behavior” on the Broncos sidelines, but I’ve seen no mention of it anywhere else.

The real issue is, under what circumstances is it OK to ignore a decades old tradition of good sportsmanship so you can admonish the winning coach? I’ve seen nothing but conjecture on the part of Haley supporters so far.

Looks like McD is starting a tradition of his own

This would be the 2nd team he taunts in so many years.

I would hardly call a coaches handshake “tradition” but if thats tradition for you then …..OK.

Bury your head in the sand all you want. Either way the truth will come out. Maybe he taunted the Chief players or maybe its all made up. We’ll see. Bertsce asked MY opinion and I gave it.

A handshake, or lack thereof, doesn’t make one classless. When I shake someones hand, I look them square in the eye. 70% of the recipients of my handshakes are always looking elsewhere (read: no eye contact) That makes me feel like the handshake isnt genuine. Does that make the person classless to me?? NO.This situation falls into the same category for me. I certainly don’t get into the tradition of handshake etiquette each time I notice the look-off.

My take on Joe's opinion

Todd Haley said our sideline was celebrating excessively. He said nothing about McD taunting players. I can tell you this though, if a player started taunting our boys on the sideline, you’re damn right McD would take up the battle. If it happened at all, this is what went down.

This is a rebuilding year for the Chiefs so if we didnt win another game all year Id be satisfied as we’ve already improved from last year.

when he finds out his team is last years version of the Broncos (worse because I doubt they’ll win 8) and he finds out we’re last years version of the Chargers. We’re gonna smoke those fools on the road in Arrowhead, just like we did to every divisional foe at their house last year. I think they are this season's version of the 09 broncos....

But I don’t know if their schedule will show it. I could still see them winning 10 games. Their remaining schedule is made up of one huge dogfight over who should be 30 or less in the power rankings.

might be a huge conspiracy that we all don’t know about. I mean do we really know our coaches? Do we socialize with them? Do we know every last call, email, or what they do in public? Maybe, McD started a fight with Haley or a bet and went to the middle of the field to gloat about it…Maybe they are doing it for publicity….Maybe they just hate eachother. Who cares? The last three games we played Haley vs McDaniels each winner has put up a 40 point day. It is rivalry along with a bunch of crap that we know nothing about. If my worst enemy wanted to shake my hand do I care what people will think if I don’t want to do it? I could care less about class at that point no matter the circumstances. Good luck on your remaining weeks and I look forward to the next game where we will put up 40 points to make it 2-2 in the Haley-McDaniels era.

that curse left with Shanahan. McD has a spotless 3-0 record with divisional games played on the road. P.S. I think we all know what Haley did was senseless. If McD did that, I would be very ashamed.

by PaleHorse78 on Nov 15, 2010 2:29 PM MST up reply actions

I will say this

I really could care less about what Haley did. Denver got a much needed win and in a convincing fashion nonetheless. However, I would be pissed as well if the replay system didnt work for our team. I’m not blaming the Broncos or McDaniels for that matter, but the NFl needs to adopt a system where the replay system gets shut off for the remainder of the game or something along those lines (like the head set rule). Its kinda brutal that in the year 2010 there are still problems like that. Maybe the NFL should copy the NHL and have a centralized command center where problems like this could be passed onto.

Its anchorman not anchorlady. And that is a scientific FACT!

by johnnystarr on Nov 15, 2010 6:57 AM MST reply actions

Agree...

It would not have been overturned, so I don’t think it mattered in this case, but I would be pissed. I think the NFL needs an overhaul of the replay system. I don’t want to extend games anymore than they are, but too many games are being decided by bad calls. If I didn’t love the Broncos so freaking much I’d have been long gone already as an NFL fan. Between the poor officiating and the crap going on with the big hits I’m more than a little unhappy with the NFL.

They should have a replay official in a booth up top who can watch every play. If a replay is requested I see no reason he couldn’t have a decision back to the field in a minute or less (what’s a current average challenge? 3-4 mins or more I would guess). Big penalties should be reviewable also. The chop block call cost us the 49ers game. If we’re 4-5 right now our season has a much different look after this game. Not blaming our poor season on officiating, we’ve played poorly and deserve to be where we are, but I am tired of the officials playing such a big role in the outcome of games. An extra replay official in a booth who has access to all camera angles would bring some level of balance and accountability.

by Kgrone on Nov 15, 2010 7:42 AM MST up reply actions

definitely agree

My biggest problem with the replay system is it gives refs an out clause. They have no accountability. They mess up a call on the field and its oh well, they can challenge it. However, we’ve seen too many times where the team challenges a call early in the game and losses. After that they only have 1 challenge. How many times have you seen a coach not challenge a call on the field because they lost an earliere challenge?

The college game has it right but like you said the average college game routinely goes 4 hours now. Its gotten to the point when I set my DVR to tape the Michigan game I add an extra 1.5 hours on it just to be safe. Big hits and catches are also brutal now. I’m all for protecting players but at some point you need to let them play. Orton ducking into the guys head last week was a bad call but by the rules it was the correct call. Nonetheless I didnt like that QB’s cant even be touched. As for catches you know its bad when the top analysts in the game (guys like Aikman and Collinsworth) dont even know when its a catch anymore.

Its anchorman not anchorlady. And that is a scientific FACT!

by johnnystarr on Nov 15, 2010 9:20 AM MST up reply actions

There was no "running up the score"

If you are up 35 to zip in the fourth quarter and still go all out to add points, THAT is running up the score. If you are up by 35 points while still in the second quarter, you can’t stop playing with more than half the game to go. Furthermore, Denver “only” scored 14 points in the second half (vs Kansas City’s 19). That can hardly be considered running up the score. What possible alternative is there? You can’t run out the clock, so the only option would be to hand the ball over when you have run out of real estate. Besides being unthinkable, that would be giving the shaft to your fans, who have come and paid in expectation of watching your best efforts.

by warmick on Nov 15, 2010 11:40 AM MST reply actions

I think this is more about Haley versus McDaniels

I think Haley is somewhat bitter that he wasn’t looked at for the Broncos position and I think he is still pissed that we ran the score up last year in their house.

I was somewhat surprised that the starters were still in there in the 4th quarter, I was actully hoping they would give Tebow some time. And I can see his point somewhat, but the bottom line is that this is the NFL, if you don’t like what the other team is doing, then stop them.

Seriously....

After going up 35-0, they outscored us 29-14. I really don’t understand the running up the score argument. And the challenge on Lloyd’s TD also brings the player morale into the equation. How does a player feel if a coach hurts his stats line just so the other team doesn’t feel bad.

No doubt

I’m glad we so called “ran up the score.” If not, nothing was stopping Bowe/Cassel from a comeback of epic proportions (no thanks to you Champ/Nate Jones). I think Bowe had a career day cause his lil’ girlfriend, Lil’ Wayne, got out of jail. He was getting tired of conjugal visits. I always wondered why he had a tat on his arm that said “Weezy” inside a heart.
