The Broncos Defense (or lack thereof)
This season, for the most part, has shown us that the Enver Broncos defensive unit has gone M.I.A. Even though I've loved the majority of Josh McDaniels draft picks, I've been scared that we've been ignoring the front seven, namely the D-Line, and making a monumental mistake in the process. I'm fully aware that every team in the league needs defensive, veteran presense, team leading players, but when does it get to the point of excess. The Band-Aids that McD has put on this Bronco defense are starting to wear off with age. We are an overall slow, weak, worn down defense, and a major overhaul is desperately needed. This is my opinion on the state of the Enver Broncos missing D.
Here are the defensive players that I feel are set in stone, to have a home with the Broncos going forward:
DE: Kevin Vickerson, Marcus Thomas, Justin Bannan
NT: Nobody
OLB/DE: Elvis Dumervil, Robert Ayers, Jason Hunter, Mario Haggan
ILB: Joe Mays, Mario Haggan
CB: Perrish Cox, Syd’Quan Thompson, Cassius Vaughn
S: David Bruton (possibly Hill in a reserve role, or Champ)
Wow, that is a scary list to behold.
I’m torn on DJ Williams. He plays well at times, but he cannot, for the life of him, fight off blocks. That is not a good trait for a 3-4 ILB to have, therefore, I can’t say he’s a perfect fit. IMO, DJ is better suited as a sideline to sideline, weakside backer, in the 4-3. I could be wrong, but I saw him struggle mightily when engaged with blockers last night, and he was pushed around like a blocking sled. The fact that he's below average to downright crappy in coverage, adds to my case, and that is truly surprising to me, given DJ's physical attributes
Wesley Woodyard is way too small/weak to be a 3-4 ILB. On the other hand, he’s great in the community and the locker room. I’m torn on him as well. He would be a perfect Nickle LB, given his size/speed, but like DJ, he's more of a sideline to sideline tackler. My friend is a Kentucky fan, and he agrees that Wood is best suited for a 4-3. The guy is a monster Special Teamer though, and that's where I become torn.
Dawk, Goodman, Hill, and Champ, are all 32 or older. That alone is self explanatory. We can’t count on them as a sure thing, going forward. Besides that, Champ seems nonchalant at times, and it doesn’t seem to me like he wants to be here. He doesn't seem too upset at losing. When his contract fell off the table, his dominating will went with it. I love Champ, Goodie, and B Dawk, and I greatly appreciate their contributions to this team. Now, it's arrived at the point (which we all knew it would), in which some of these vet DB's are on their last, gimpy leg. Reinforcements are desperately needed, and I'd be thrilled with Peterson, Amukamara, Barron, or Harris.
I wouldn't be mad if all those vets stuck with our team and played reserve roles, but roster spots are needed, and I'd bet that most of those guy's play will deteriorate (besides Champ) significantly by next year anyway. It's not like they're doing a whole lot now. Last but not least (Ok, least), Nate Jones has no value at all to this team, unless you count rushing the passer. After seeing all of his other negatives, I don't count that as a redeming factor. On a side note, if Champ gets his mojo back, and will move to S, I say we keep him for eternity, but it's a huge IF that he'll even be retained by the front office.
Ryan "the Face Grabber" McBean & Ronald "I fell off the freaking map / wasn't really on the map to begin with" Fields, just flat out stink, nuff said. Jamal Williams could hang around for another year and help coach up a rookie, but it would be no surprise to me at all if he didn’t, or regressed into nothing even if he did. Once again, it's a case of a player that can’t be counted on.
Darcel Mc"Ice"Bath gets hurt every single time he plays, it seems, and I fear he's one of those hopelessly fragile players. He absolutely cannot be counted on, as his body hasn't been able to withstand NFL punishment. People who are counting on this guy (and I agree that the kid has some serious skill) are holding onto a hope that his injury problems are behind him. Seeing how he got hurt, AGAIN last night, only confirms my logic even more. McBath is a great young Special Teamer, I'll give him that, but at this point, we can't call him much else. I'm still pissed at the Patriots for snagging Josh Barrett from our grasp.
Where does that leave us? It leaves us with too many holes to fix in one offseason, and I blame most of this on McX, as they have largely ignored the front seven in the draft, and missed on some key secondary additions (Alphonso Smith, possibly Darcel McBath). Don’t get me wrong, the offense is a mess too, namely the O-Line, but it’s filled with young, potential talent. If we don’t come out of this draft/FA period, with a solid NT, DE, S, CB, and ILB, we are sure to see similar results, record wise, to this year. Go Broncos, and I hope this clears up the myth that I see no fault in the Defense. It is the #1 priority, over Kyle Orton and Tim tebow. That doesn't mean that I have to be sold on Kyle, and I believe that he can, and will, be upgraded in the near future.

I agree w/ 100% of this
I would still like to keep Champ though. If we could pick up Prince Amukamara as cb1 Perrish Cox as cb 2 and Champ roaming around at safety, I think that could have potential to be nasty
very true
but Champ needs to put on his professional pants again, and realize that no matter how much money he makes, he’s a born warrior. I know he has it in him, and I think he’d be a killer centerfielder,

Foregone conclusion?
Do most people think it’s a foregone conclusion that Champ will not be back next year? Maybe I’m just too optimistic, but I think with how close they were to a deal that the FO wants him back. Maybe they’ll franchise him. I think that Champ is the one guy that is a veteran that we still need and want on this team.
I hope, more than anyone, that he comes back
But only if he takes it more serious. Something’s wrong with Champ, and I don’t think I’m the only one who sees it.
I agree on DJ and Mcbath
DJ has improved this season, but he has no strength at the point of attack and he is horrific in coverage. Everyone blames Nate Jones on the first TD pass last night (and rightfully so) but if you go back and watch the play. DJ is in a zone coverage on the Defensive right side of the field and he gets baited into shifting to the left (where the WR was covered by 2 people already) and that opened up part of the window that the ball was completed into. He is just far too easy to manipulate for good QBs.
basically with the scheme we run, he is not worth what he is being paid.
Mcbath could be an excellent player and when he is on the field he generally plays quite well. At this point though a plan needs to be put in place to replace him. If we go into next season with him as a starter then that is horrific front office management and it will cost us when he gets hurt.
A side note on Mcbean, if he is not replaced this offseason then it means this team can expect the exact same results as this season. He is probably our worst player on the defensive line, and if he is still on the team then nothing has been improved.
I have to believe that Alphonso Smith was traded in part because of his bonehead plays in the preseason. If that is true then Mcbean should be shown the door as well.
If McD sits on his hands in the draft again
and doesn’t stockpile front seven players, then there is no hope for him to ever truly get IT. DL, and LB (outside of Ayers and some undrafted guys), has been ignored long enough. It baffles me how a coach doesn’t understand that you need a constant influx of young, front seven talent, to be successful in the NFL. We’ve came away from two drafts with Robert Ayers and Jammie Kirlew, as the only front seven reinforcements. That’s not kosher. Chris Baker, Kevin Alexander, and Everette Pedescleaux, do not cut it.
I realize that players who were possibly targeted by our front office, were snatched up before we could grab them. Tyson Jackson, BJ Raji, Rolando McClain, Sean Weatherspoon, and Donald Butler come to mind, but that is no excuse for selecting Richard Quinn, Seth Olsen, Alphonso Smith, Tom Brandstater, or Kenny McKinley (no disrespect to him at all) when the D-Line/ILB’s you had were garbage. Tell me you wouldn’t rather have Rey Maualuga, Sammie Lee Hill, Vaughn Johnson, or Terrance Knighton, just to name a few.
I have no idea how McD thought that Ryan McBean, Kenny Peterson, Ron Fields, Jamal Williams, Jarvis Green, Mario Haggan, Jarvis Moss, Darrell Reid, and Wesley Woodyard, would suffice. I am thrilled with Joe Mays, Kevin Vickerson, and Jason Hunter, but I’m not sure that any of those guys are starting material (OK, maybe Big Vick). For the record, I was also happy with Vonnie Holiday’s play last year, and feel like he was a decent pickup.

If we don’t come out of this draft with a NT, DE, S, CB, and ILB
You really think rookie players at all of these positions are going to make us better? Maybe in 3 years. The “seasoned veteran” player idea isn’t working either. But saying we can’t do it without that type of draft is preposterous. We still have FA. The issue lies with the folks making the personnel decisions.
I'm so optimistic I'd go after Moby Dick in a row boat and take the tartar sauce with me.~Zig Ziglar
I didn't say they had to start/make an impact immediately
I simply meant that we needed reinforcements at those positions. You took me wrong. How is that preposterous? Show me the players, on this team, that will, with 100% certainty, fill those roles next year. I will say this, if we don’t draft/sign a couple players, at those positions, who’ll make an immediate impact, we’re royally screwed. So if we come away from next offseason (draft or free agency) without a NT, DE, S, ILB, or CB, the players already on this team are ready to take off? I seriously doubt it. No more Band-Aids, we need younger, impact players.
Agree with PaleHorse - we have to invest in the Front 7 in the draft.
Using free agency is not good enough to win you Superbowls. You have to keep a core of talent from your drafts.
The lack of draft investment in the front 7 over the last few years has been exposed for all to see.
And if we want these players to come into their prime for a 2012/13 SB run then we need to draft them now!

using free agency was good enough to win us 2 Super Bowls....
go back and look at some of the reinforcements we added for that run. Romonowski, Eddie Mac, Howard Griffith, Neil Smith and Alfred Williams. Pretty darn important cogs in our machine.

DJ will be gone at the end of the season just for the mere fact of his DUI...
Your right though, he;s like a fish out of water on most plays…WW is a ST player period! Not a regular players who can come in and cover….Both should be gone in 2011…
Thanks for doing this post
Even if we had Tim Tebow at his peak, or Elway, or Manning, we aren’t going to win many games until we fix our defense. Once we have even a half way decent defense, we can win a lot more games.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
I did it just for you Maxie
We see eye to eye, more than we think. In the same breath, I can’t help my feelinds towards Orton man. We all have had those players, who are good players, but, for whatever reason, don’t click with us. If Orton can come back out gunning, our running game can get going again, and we can finally block, then all is forgiven – for now.
However we get them
Excellent write-up. Pretty much hammered out everything that I was going to say.
I think the defensive line has to be one of our top priorities in free agency/draft. To get even the inkling of pressure this year we have to blitz an extra 3 or 4 people. You can’t expect an aging secondary to keep up with that demand for so much activity up on the line of scrimmage. We need a big beefcake NT – our own Haloti Ngata or Ndamakung Suh. A legitimate pass-rushing threat at DE would be nice too. It’s great when Dumervil and Ayers will be on the field, but where does the rush come from if they’re not? You can make up for a lot of shortcomings on your defense with a solid showing on the line. I’d like to see a massive influx of competition in the off-season.
"Accept the fact that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue."
You expressed my exact feelings except with McBath
i’m a little higher on him i know he seems injured a lot but he wasnt injury prone in college and he has a lot of potential. He plays a lot like Decoud from the falcons. Remember the two picks on manning? I think he deserves a spot
I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a spot
and I do think we should keep him. The thing with McBath, you can’t say he’ll ever be able to withstand punishment. We just haven’t seen it. With my thoughts on him, it wasn’t about his ability, it’s the fact that his future is unknown, and we can’t defintely, 100%, say he’s a solid option going forward.
i agree but i feel like bruton has just as many question marks(different ones) and you have have him on your list
McBath does have some uncertainty after another injury
Bruton got outran by Rivers
How the heck did that happen?
