Pat Bowlen and a list of possible solutions

As we all know by now, I'm an emotional guy. I want to see my (our) beloved Broncos fight so badly, that when they fail to, I become disgruntled. I ended up taking the route that Boydy did Sunday, minus an appearance at Invesco, and took my daughter out for a movie (go see the new Potter flick if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed). I was sad that our Broncos put up a valiant effort, only to be crushed last second, but I had so much fun with my daughter, it was a distant second on the list of concerns.

We all need to take a step back, see where the Broncos are going, and come away with some ideas on what's fixable, and what needs change. There's not much we can do at this point, but ride it out, and be thrilled that Pat Bowlen, a man in whom we all should trust, has taken note of our recent failures and has a gameplan in hand to fix it. After the jump, I will give you my list of solutions, that Mr. Bowlen may take to rectify the issues at hand.

Solutions

1. Hire a good GM. Josh McDaniels is too young to be doing everything by himself. His plate is way too full. If we can’t find an experienced, successful GM, let Matt Russell, director of college scouting, give it a try. This guy has been a major reason for the Pats and Eagles successful drafting for the past 9 years. Part of me believes he was brought in for this very reason.

2. Tweak the coaching staff. Priefer is a bum, Ligashesky is overwhelmed, Barone has produced nothing of note, and many others need deep evaluation. Last year was a down year for available coaches, and we can do better. O-Line, Special Teams, Tight Ends, and more, can be upgraded.

3. Let the Orange Crush begin, again. Our players and coaches feel better in the predominately orange unis, let it become our staple again. This fanbase needs a changeup as well, and new uniforms would be a great start.

4. Quit changing D Coordinators every year. This one is on McD, just as much as it is on Shanahan. It took Ron Rivera a few years, after Phillips left, to get that Charger D firing on all cylinders, and it will take us a couple more as well.

5. Restock the Defense. Out of both sides of the football for the Broncos, the D is the one with the least talent. McDaniels (I’ll never call it McX again as Xanders is a puppet) has ignored the D, namely the front 7, in the draft for far too long. We all know that a secondary is useless without a nasty front line of defense, and it’s imperative that young playmakers be added. We have no balance, it’s either green or ancient. This must be addressed in the offseason (draft and free agency). We need front 7 first and foremost, but secondary reinforcements are needed as well. This entire D needs an infusion of talented youth, and it may take more than one offseason to rectify.

6. Put John Elway in a position that matters. This man knows football, plain and simple. His dad was a coach, and he’s deep rooted in this game that we love. His passion and knowledge would go a long way towards doing what’s best for this team. Ownership, front office, it doesn’t matter, give Elway some snaps again.

7. Cut the dead weight from the roster. There are several players on our team (you know who you are) that give up when the chips are down. Bowlen and Coach McDaniels need to go over the game tape, in great detail, to see who’s giving it their all, and who’s not. I would start with DJ and Champ, bring them in, and explain to them that nonchalant attitudes will not be tolerated. I would also strip everyone of their captaincy who stood around lifeless during pregame pump up, and was seen smiling/carefree, after a devastating loss (Raiders, Chargers). We need leaders on this team who actually lead, not just go through the motions. The C on the chest means nothing unless the player is a captain at heart (Weapon X).

8. Pat Bowlen needs to send a message. Insubordination, and willingness to fail, will not under any circumstance, be tolerated. Coaches and players who fail to meet expectations will be dealt with confidently, and swiftly. The culture needs a breath of fresh air in Dove Valley, and Bowlen laying down the law would help weed out the quitters from the real men. I believe his comments about Josh and the assistants were much needed. Everybody performs better when their jobs are on the line, and I hope Pat keeps shaking the tree.
