While the stories here and in MSM focus on who the next coach or GM of the Broncos will be, the critical person missing from these stories is Bowlen. What does Bowlen want? Where IS Bowlen? It doesn't matter if it's his health or a personal choice to sow down, he is not interested in running the Broncos day-to-day. The firing of Shannahan two years ago was more about taking control of the team than playoff appearances. Shannhan had sucked all the oxygen out of Dove Valley. You can do that win you when championships. You can get away with it if you don't win and don't spend the team into oblivion. But Bowlen left a power vacuum when he fired Shannhan and before Bowlen hires coach or GM he has to decide how he wants his team run and who reports to who in the org chart. Until that is decided, there is no point in hiring anyone.
I hope Elway said the same thing to him during their dinner this week. I think John will make an outstanding front office member, the question is will it be with the Broncos or the future LA franchise. But John has to know that until Bowlen makes up his mind on HOW he wants the team to operate, the front office will be unstable and that will seep onto the field.
