Kneejerk Mock offseason

Well after this game I can almost say with full certainty that the firing of Josh McDaniels was a mistake. I can't help but feel that a dark cloud is descending over our once proud Broncos. But despite this I  will look at the positives of this loss.

Star-divide

Let me start with the coaches. Earlier today Adam Schefter reported that John Elway will be added to the front office and Brian Xanders will be retained as GM. I think at the end of the day we need to go with the best defensive coach we can get. I feel that this offense is set for the next 10 years, it just needs some nurturing, depth, and a tightend who can catch a pass. So this offseason we sign Ron Rivera/ Greg Mattison as our Head Coach. With the hiring of a defensive coach, we basically demote Wink and I think that might be for the best. But we do keep Wink and Mike McCoy. McCoy mostly because I do not know of any potential offensive coordinators who will do better.

Free Agency

Our new Defensive minded head coach will likely bring in some players who he wants.

Our first free agent aquisition should be cornerback Richard Marshall, Marshall should be made a priority this offseason. He averages roughly 80 tackles and 3 picks a season. He is excellent in run support and pass coverage. He can take over where Champ left off and make his impact known.

The next player we should look at is nosetackle Paul Soliai, Soliai is lane clogging machine. Some of you may think Jamaal Williams is big. Paul is actually bigger. Paul has stepped his game up over the last two seasons. He has come on more this year with his pass rushing.

With all the players set to not get resigned on the Jets roster one in particular could be intriguing. Safety Brodney Pool, Pool is a safety in a good Jets secondary. Pool has good hands and can play either safety position.

Draft:

Right now we have the 3rd pick in the NFL draft and I don't see that changing. We are a rebuilding team. The fact that we have 5 picks in the upcoming draft does not help. On draft day Carolina selects Andrew Luck. Cincinatti selects Daquan Bowers. Now we are in an ideal situation, we can take Nick Fairley, Patrick Peterson, or Marcell Dareus. With only five picks we trade down with Dallas as Dallas wants Patrick Peterson. We gain their 3rd round pick and 8th overall pick. Now at 8 both of the top corners are off the board, Fairley is gone, and Marcell Dareus is available. Dareus is the most NFL ready defensive lineman in this draft. Dareus is a unique athlete who can make himself small and shoot gaps or stand tall and clog rushing lanes. Dareus improves our rush defense and pass rush on day 1.
In the second round we look to improve our defensive backfield. We select Quintin Carter, Carter is a top safety who can improve our secondary and take over for Dawkins.
Our pick from Miami is a mid 2 round pick. We look again to secondary help and select cornerback Curtis Brown, Brown is an instictual corner with great speed. He isn't afraid to hit somebody either and is ready and willing in run support.
We get to our 3 round pick and again look to the DL and select Laurence Guy, Guy is very physically talented and is best suited in a 34 scheme. We aren't done in this round though and trade Kyle Orton to Minnesota for their 3rd and 6th round picks. With their picks we pick tight end DJ Williams. DJ is a great story and is an excellent receiving tightend. Then we trade Andre Goodman to the Ravens for their 4th round pick. We select Darrius Morris, Morris is an athletic swing tackle who can also play guard. With our first of two 6th round picks we select Derrick Locke, Locke is a speedy scat back who can help in the return game. With our next pick we select Casey Mathews, Mathews is the brother of Clay, but is a fine prospect in his own right.

My only comment on this

Is the Tebow factor, becasue I do believe a great team starts with a top flight QB, and as much as I want to see what Tebow can do, I also don’t know if I want to risk what he can bring to the table vs. some of the QB’s coming out this year.

Along with Luck I also believ that Ryan Mallett and Jake Locker have just as much potential to be great QB’s as Tebow at this point until I see otherwise ( and I hope I do).

But unfortunately that may put once againon hold the first round draft pick of a defensive guy until QB can be solidified, as much as we need us some defensive talent.

I like your off season

Pretty Similar to what my dream team looks like

My Dream 2011 Denver Broncos
#] = Rd Picked
QB Tebow, Colt Brennan (I personally dont like Brady… at ALL, why not Colt (: )
HB Knowshon, Lendale, Noel Devine [4th]
FB Larsen, or Quinn (put Larsen back at LB)
WR Lloyd, Royal, DT, Deck
TE Kyle Rudolph [2nd], Quinn
T Clady, Beadles, Graham (im almost serious)
G Kuper, Nicks [FA], Olsen
C Walton, Olsen
LE Nick Fairley [1st], Big Vick
NT J Will, Phil Taylor/Jerrell Powe [3rd]
RE Bannan, Thomas
LOLB Ayers, Veikune
SILB Mays, Haggan
WILB David Harris [FA], Woodyard
ROLB Doom,
CB Champ, Goody, Cox, Squid, Vaughn
S Mark Barron [2nd], Bruton/McBath
K Prater
P Colquitt
I think Ryan Harris gets his payday somewhere else
Dawk stays ala Sharper/retires
Trade Orton to Minnesota for their 4th, thats what he’s worth after today… trade that 4th for a 5 and 7
Use those for OL and Pass rushing/ST LB
Run the Ball, PA with Tebow; Knowshon proves 1st rd status; Tebow PA to Rudolph short, DT Long, Lloyd everywhere else; Eddie Becomes returning/3rd down beast;
Broncos turn it around in Tebows 1st year, AFC West Champs

posted it on another thread, but wat do you think?

Dareus is good, but I think Fairley is more of what our DLine lacks

Our current D Line holds their ground well
But when it comes to disruption and penetration in the backfield, they are pretty lacking most of the time..
I think Fairley wil have more success at pressuring the QB from a 34 end spot.. thats why i take him over Dareus, but either way id be happy…

If we dont get David Harris, I really like Akeem Ayers out of UCLA.. reminds me of Lawrence Timmons from Pittsburgh, not sure we can afford NOT drafting an impact DL with our firsr pick though.. if we dont.. we HAVE to grab either Watts out of Wisconsin, or Ballard out of Iowa with our second pick

go look at fairley against georgia

Getting dumb penalties and playing undeciplined. So that is the reason I am on the dereus/peterson bandwagon

Naw.

No way we get Harris out of NY.

and I’d rather have Soliai than either Powe or Taylor.

Get me Casey Matthews in the 3rd or 4th, please.

If he’s even half as good as his brother [and he seems to be; he’s ALWAYS making plays for the Ducks], he’ll be well worth it. Maybe even a steal.

Assuming Champ is gone, I'll be pissed if we trade Goodie.....

Cox and Squid have potential but I don’t trust either as a #1. Goodman, when healthy, can hang with very good receivers.

Other than that I’m okay with it overall….

Richard Marshall is the 1 corner

Pass rush makes corners look elite, that’s what we need.

Trading Down

I understand that Denver only has 5 picks but that top 3 spot is crucial. I think Peterson should be taken at 3 and trade current players to get picks instead. If Champ is gone and Goodman being traded, then an elite corner will be needed.

by Tim Teblows on Dec 12, 2010 10:04 PM MST reply actions

So in this scenario you let Champ walk? Why not franchise him and trade him?

I think we need to get rid of Gaffney too. Decker can take over for him. I doubt we can get anything from him in trade.

I still think we can get a 3rd for Orton considering the Seahawks paid a 3rd for Charlie Whitehurst. I think someone will give up a 3rd for Orton but not more.

by BroncoMath101 on Dec 12, 2010 10:04 PM MST reply actions

Eh. The offseason has parts I like and parts I dont.

I like Mattison.

I don’t like much of the draft. You just don’t trade down from the 3rd spot. Dareus or Fairley or Peterson would all be good. But if Champ is gone, we need Peterson. We can grab JJ Watt in the second and be fine. There isn’t as much drop on the DL.

Also, we don’t need so much secondary help. Brodney Pool is an interesting/good pick up I think, and I love the Richard Marshall pickup, but Bruton seems like he should be taking over for Dawkins. I just like the way he plays.

If we get Richard Marshall and Patrick Peterson, I will also be ok with letting Champ walk and trading Goodman. But, I hope we can keep Champ [I know he likes Denver, and wants to be here if we can get back to winning].

My hopeful offseason:
QB: Tebow, Quinn, Greg McElroy [6th round ish]
RB: Moreno, White, Ball, Noel Devine [4th or 5th]
FB: Larsen
TE: Quinn, Gronkowski, Anthony Fasano (FA)
WR: Lloyd, Royal, decker, Thomas, Eron Riley
OT: Clady, Harris, Beadles, some backup
G: Nicks [FA], Kuper, Beadles, Olsen
C: Walton, Olsen

NT: Williams, Soliai [FA]
DE: Vickerson, Thomas, JJ Watt [2nd], Bannan
OLB: Doom, Ayers, Hunter, Veikune, Haggan
MLB: Mays, Chad Greenway [FA], Woodyard, Casey Matthews [4th ish round. He play Middle for Oregon, btw], Haggan
CB: Richard Marshall [FA], Champ, Thompson, Patrick Peterson [1st], Cox [although who knows with his charges, he could be gone]/Goodman
S: Bruton, McBath, Hill, Brodney Pool/Atari Bigby or something
K: Prater
P: Colquitt
LS: Paxton

Something like that. Obviously I’m missing some draft picks and such, but I would like that roster.

Buffs: 5-7.
Ducks: 12-0!
Hawks: 7-5 >:(

by hvis on Dec 13, 2010 12:34 AM MST reply actions

Well, if he doesnt?

This is a deep draft in terms of DL. Christian Ballard will be there in the 2nd. and he’s a solid solid player.

And hell, with our draft maneuvering skills, who knows? We could jump back into the first round and pick up Stephen Paea or JJ Watt. Especially if we trade Orton, franchise and trade champ, trade goodman or DJ williams, whatever. We have some flexibility.

Buffs: 5-7.
Ducks: 12-0!
Hawks: 7-5 >:(

trade everyone!!

let’s trade everyone for a draft pick and just start a brand new team.. sounds like we need to do something like this anyways.. but of course keep a couple of good players that we already have

BRIAN ORAKPO, 19.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles in 27 games
ROBERT AYERS, 1.5 sacks, 0 forced fumbles in 21 games
*both came from the same draft class

Trading Down

In general, I wouldn’t mind trading down and picking up more picks, but the compensation has to be much higher. The scenario you described (3rd overall for the 8th overall + 3rd round) is a terrible deal for the Broncos. If you look at the trade value chart (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2410670), you would see that the 3rd overall is worth 2200 pts. The 8th overall is worth 1400 pts, a difference of 800 pts. If you assume Dallas has the 8th position, then their 2nd and 3rd round pick value combined is 820. That would be closer to a fair trade and a much more interesting discussion for the Broncos to consider.

Also, we have to consider that this value chart is from 2004. If there is a rookie salary cap, those high picks are even more valuable. I think there will be a ton of interest in grabbing Petersen, Bowers, or Fairley, so we may see somone “overpay” to move up and get their guy.
