Is your loyalty to the state of Colorado or to the team?
Somebody on a recent post brought up the question of the Broncos moving to a new city. I don't think think there is even a remote chance of that happening anytime soon, but it made me wonder.....
....is your loyalty to the Broncos no matter if they change cities and even name or is it to Colorado/Denver? I believe I know my answer. When the Colorado Rockies (the hockey team) left to become the NJ Devils a few decades ago, I became a Devils fan. However, the moment it was announced that the Quebec Nordiques were going to become the Colorado Avalanche, I dropped my loyalty to the Devils like a bad habit. It didn't matter that the Nordiques were stocked, it was just completely natural to root for the Avs. I suspect if the Broncos were to leave town, I would do the same thing. But I don't know for sure and hope to never find out. I know this poll doesn't apply to all; afterall, if you have no roots in Colorado, you probably wouldn't just root for the next team to come here. But I thought I would try the poll thing anyways.
The other question I would have is would you even care at all if they switched cities? I think this is interesting if you are not a Coloradoan.

I grew up in Idaho (my dad was from Colorado and passed the team on to me)
But even though I have never lived in Colorado, I would not be able to remain a fan if they left, and I would not have a favorite team till one was back in Denver.

it is a good question
and i’ve noticed that sometimes on MHR it feels like people don’t get each other because of those differences. i’m colorado all the way and if the broncos went to LA or something—eesh. no thanks. period. you’re dead to me, and don’t be calling yourselves the broncos. it’s a different idea altogether for me to think about being a fan of the last name of the team rather than the first, but i’m starting to come to grips with the fact that not everyone, for example, is from a city that has pro franchises.
I'm not sugarcoating this.
My family is born
and raised 4th gen native Denver. My generation was the first group (in fact really only me and my immediate siblings as almost if not all cousins also born in Co) born outside of Colorado.
Great thinking question…But outside of Denver it just wouldn’t be my Broncos.

Homer all the way
I did sort of follow the hockey Rockies after they became the Devils, but only because Colorado didn’t have an NHL team any longer. But the second the Nords moved, I had a new team.
My fantasy hockey team sucks. But at least I'm not a Red Wing sellout.
I got pretty lucky...
….followed the Devils and they won the cup and then we got the Avs and we won a couple of more. I’m a homer too.

I love Denver!
To me the Broncos are Denver. I would be heart broken if they left and could never cheer for them again. Bowlen would become my most hated owner and I would refuse to refer to the franchise by name. I feel for fans in places like Baltimore (pre Ravens) and Cleveland. To me this is like asking a Yankee fan if they’d still cheer for the Miami Yankees. I couldn’t do it. Like a girlfriend who ripped out your heart by marrying your best friend, I couldn’t cheer for them. Ever.

I think this post and poll are designed for people who live or have lived in Colorado and call it home..
I love the state of Colorado but I don’t live there anymore and haven’t for over 10 years. If the Broncos left I would still root for them but I would also root for whatever team came to CO since that is where I call home.
I lived in Denver for 8 years, got hooked and am now a koolaid drinker. Thanks Elway!
Loyalty is to Broncos and tradition, not Denver!

The Sydney Broncos...
It just doesn’t sound right.
I have been through this recently. My mistress, my rugby league team (Manly Sea Eagles) were forced to merge with another club (North Sydney Bears). The new team was called the “Northern Eagles”. I still followed them put the deep down grass roots passion had gone. It was dirty, it had no heritage and they sucked.
Well that didn’t work out too well (alot of losing involved) and the fans made so much noise that the Northern Eagles disbanded and we went back to being the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. The year was 2003. We were back at the big dance 4 yrs later and won the whole shabang the next year, 2008.
I tell you this to share my hope and belief that a team or a franchise can turn things around and not have to wait for years and years. BTW we also went out and got ourselves a club legend to assist us in our return to greatness.
The Broncos and Denver are one and the same. You can’t have the Broncos without Denver and Denver can not be without THE ALMIGHTY BRONCOS!

My loyalty has been, and always will be, to Denver, Colorado
I would probably follow the team until Denver got another NFL franchise, wherein the old Broncos would probably fall to second on my list.
It’s a weird thing to think about… regardless, I would probably have lots of internal conflict about it.
I would hope that they leave the team nickname to Denver and take a new one, as the Ravens and Titans did. That way, when Denver got a NEW team, they’d still be the Broncos.
And, honestly, I don’t think Denver would be without a franchise for very long.

“Is your loyalty to the state of Colorado or to the team?”
Both.
The angry fans and Woody Paige didn't get McDaniels fired, a lack of improvement, 3-9, several losing streaks, Spygate II, empty seats, too many home losses, several bad blowouts, botched personnel decisions and the endless drama did the trick.
If the Broncos moved to LA and Denver got a new NFL team, which would be your #1 team?

For me it would be the new team in Denver.
I’m a diehard fan of the Denver Broncos. Not the LA (or whatever else) Broncos.
Hopefully the Rockies/Avs scenrio will never happen and make you choose....
…..but it may someday.

I am first and foremost loyal to the Bronco’s as far as teams from the state go though. And the Buffs.
Buffs: 5-7.
Ducks: 12-0!
Hawks: 7-5 >:(
It'd be tough honestly
But look at the Browns fans. A fanbase arguably as passionate as the Broncos, but when the franchise abandoned Cleveland, they dropped loyalty. It’d be hard to root for a team like that.
Also, hvis, I assume the “Hawks: 7-5” in your signature refers to Iowa? If so, I share your sentiments.

I was born in Grand Junction but raised and still reside in Durango.
My loyalties lie with whatever NFL Team plays in Colorado. Which is currently and hopefully remains for all of eternity; the Denver Broncos.

I feel so sorry for you people who haven't been to Colorado.
It’s so wonderful here! When the Broncos suck, I just head up to the mountains.
"West Coast Seattle boy-The Jimi Hendrix Anthology-" Get it.
I've lived in Colorado and have been a Broncos fan since 1974.
If the Broncos move out of Denver, they would be abandoning their fan base, and I would no longer be a fan. I grew up in eastern North Dakota, so would most likely revert back to my secondary team, the Vikings (assuming they were stilll in Minnesota).
I live in Michigan
So no, not much loyalty to the state of Colorado
My loyalty goes to the Broncos team
I have lived my whole life in San Diego so I will be a Broncos fan wherever they go, not that I think that will ever happen. For some of you it may seem weird that I since I was born and raised in San Diego and I don’t root for the Chargers. I became an Elway fan when I was 13 and they made the Super Bowl, which was down here that year. My dad was never a big football fan, so wasn’t watching Charger games with him and made up my own choice.
Broncos fan 4 life.

I guess it depends
I became a Bronco fan long before I moved to Colorado back in the 70s. I lived in various parts of the state for 27 years, but work lead me farther west a few years ago, where I have remained a loyal fan. While I still like Colorado, it has changed much over the years and I don’t ever see myself moving back, so I guess I am a fan of the TEAM more so than the STATE. I am a country boy, so Denver never interested me much, other than as a place to visit every once in a while.
Would I remain a fan of the Broncos if they moved? Probably, but I suppose it would depend somewhat on WHERE they moved. If the Broncos move to LA and become the Stars or the Bangers I would probably bid them a fond farewell.
Good question
If the Broncos left and another team came to Denver I would probably follow the new team. However, if I were to move out of Denver to another city that had a team I would still be a Broncos fan.
I'm loyal to both
I started watching football right around the same time Elway was drafted – I grew up in Grand Junction, and let’s face it, there wasn’t a whole lot else going on other than Broncos football. At this point in my life I’ve spent more time outside CO than inside it – and part of being a Broncos fan is being a bit nostalgic for where I grew up, remembering friends & family back home that are probably watching the same games, and thinking that next time we all get together we’ll talk about how good or bad the team’s doing — it’s not the same with the “other” sports – my dad liked to talk Avs, my little brother likes to talk Rockies – everybody knows a Nuggs fan or two. But as we all know, the Broncos are the sports heart and soul of the state, region, and time zone. And we all know the Broncos get absolutely no love outside the region. So if they moved to LA, god forbid, they’d be going from where they are loved, to where they are hated. It’s not like moving the Rams or something, from one god-forsaken anonymous place to another. Broncos cannot be separated from Colorado. Now if you moved them to Durango or something I’d be down with that.
To answer your question, if that seriously happened, I’d probably stop watching the NFL entirely, and commit myself to English Premier League – I’ve been following (I say following, because I’ve just been reading about them & haven’t seen a game yet) Blackpool, who have been promoted this year & are taking the league by storm.
Or I’ll take up knitting on Sundays or something. I really think I’d have a philosophical crisis at that point. Maybe that means I’ve got an unhealthy obsession with the team, but isn’t that what being a fan’s all about?
It’s like somebody said in another comment, it’s a bit like asking if your wife cheats on you with your best friend, which one of them do you stay friends with?
i'm from anaheim,
but if the broncos ended up in l.a. or somewhere else it would just be weird. like if the vikings move to l.a. (like the lakers did many years ago) would i like them? or would i still be looking at the vikings? would we still be the broncos if the team left denver? i guess for me, being from somewhere else, my loyalty can only go as far as the team goes. i have no ties to colorado other than the team. if they go, i guess i follow them wherever they end up.
I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be.
Wow, tough question
I grew up in Colorado, but haven’t lived there in about 10 years (St Augustine, FL).
My answer is I don’t know, I just don’t know. I’ve loved the Broncos for so long now, but that would be the Broncos abandoning their fans, which means me, even though I don’t live in CO anymore. I would probably drop them as a team, but I just don’t see myself rooting for anyone else. I’d more than likely be a man without a team. Maybe just drop the NFL, maybe root for a new Denver/Colorado team. I couldn’t root for the local team here (Jags, because eff them).
I just don’t know, it would rip my heart out though.
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
I was a big Rockies fan back in the day
Even though they always sucked (worse than the current Broncos team), I felt quite betrayed that they moved to Jersey…To this day, I still hate the Devils…..As far as the Broncos go, I have not lived in Denver for 15-years, but I imagine I would have to drop them like a hot potato….My local teams are the Raiders and Niners; I guess I would become a Niners fan…
Colorado
For one I dont think I will ever have to worry about the Broncos leaving Denver. I hate the Devils. Once they left Colorado they were dead to me. I loved the fact the Avs beat them in the finals. All my favorite teams are in the great state of Colorado, even tho I am here in San Diego my loyalties are with Colorado. (except for CSU)

I'm from KY, so my loyalty is to the Broncos.
However, if they moved to Louisville (my backyard), I would be torn. I’d love to be a stones throw from the Broncos, but Denver and the Broncos are just meant to be together…
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Easy - if they ain't in Denver, they ain't the Denver Broncos and they ain't my team.

I would hate the Broncos if they moved.
Plain and simple. I couldn’t imagine the let down that would be. This city would riot and do many bad things if that happened. I’d probably be one of the many thousands to get tear gassed at Dove Valley.

And I would want to outlive the team owner who moved them so I could have the chance to urinate on his grave
I assume that Art Modell will have to be cremated and buried at sea – the parade of Browns fans coming to “pay their respects” would kill every blade of grass in any cemetery that housed his grave.
The results so far kind of surprise me.
The way I see it, so much of who the Broncos are, their history (the good times and bad), the fans, the altitude, the weather, the colors, even the name “Broncos”, is all inseparable from Denver, Colorado.
Like I said above, I’ve never lived there, and the thought of cheering for any other “Bronco Team” (I think they would leave the name behind) is worse than cheering for the Raiders.
It sure isn’t fun to think about, that is for certain.

I would stay a Bronco fan
but the thought of the Broncos leaving made me feel a little ill!
I’ve basically been a Bronco fan since birth. My parents took me, a 5-month old, to Cleveland for the 1987 Championship game, as in The Drive. The picture of my dad holding me along side some other Bronco-followers is still in an album somewhere
Great question
What team best represents us? Depends on how you look at wanting to be represented.
For me, born in Colorado, but with deep, deep roots in idaho, and now a deep, deep love of Alaska, The broncos have been the “Rocky Mountain Team”, and I let them represent the part of me that grew up in a rough wilderness, a place that fostered self-reliance and pride, and a humble integration into my own surroundings. I was proud of where I was from, and the type of people who would choose to live in mining towns and logging camps and oil fields. I felt like their money, their sons and their son’s sons, fueled Mile High Stadium, and I was happy to let the roar of that crowd speak for me.
I could barely handle the Broncos moving into Invesco field, a political and corporate machination, I would lose sight of them completely if they departed the rockies and the cradle of the self-made man. I identify with the Rocky Mountains, and love that the Broncos have always done such a tremendous job of representing that. And as much as I can find value in places like Seattle, or Florida, or New England, none of those places are what I was made of. The Broncos in LA? Doesn’t have much to do with me, frankly. The championships, 4th quarter comebacks, former players heroes, great stories, all those things will stay in Broncos Country, because they reside primarily in hearts and minds. Even if the two Lombardis someday sit in a locked display case in LA, the only intimacy those trophies will ever know is in Denver, and no LA fan will see them the same way that a Broncos fan sees them.
What i see in the Broncos is a big part of what MHR means to me, and why it is so difficult for me to witness the deep rifts in the fanbase. Pride in the Broncos has always been about pride in myself and my choices, and by proxy, pride in their fans, pride in where I came from, and what I took from there.
If they left, my eyes would still be riveted on the Rockies, and whatever happened there…
So long as there shall exist, by reason of law and custom, a social condemnation which, in the midst of civilization, artificially creates a hell on earth, and complicates with human fatality a destiny that is divine; in other words, and from a still broader point of view, so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, there should be a need for books such as this.

That's
what I think, Jeremy, call them the Rocky Mountain Broncos if they move to Albuquerque or something. Ultimately, though, I prefer they stay in Denver and retain their identity (no that is not an allusion to the McDaniels experiment gone terribly wrong), it could be a New England Patriots type nickname, though, if they move from downtown Denver

Great post...
Born & raised in Denver one the few original fans from day one. I could never root for a transplanted team in Denver if Broncos left. But that won’t happen in my life time. If however Broncos ever did leave it would give me the chance to root for a team here in LA, or OC, Calif and the possibility of Elway as part owner should it ever come together.

Good Question
I have lived in Mountain Time all my life (even when I left Utah, my Mormon mission was in Tucson and El Paso) so the Broncos are the region’s team. Perhaps if they left Colorado and became the Rocky Mountain Broncos, it wouldn’t hurt me but ultimately they need to stay in Denver, Flagstaff, Albuquerque or Salt Lake City, whatever. The Broncos need to stay in Denver if at all possible though!

by the new Bradfather on Dec 15, 2010 9:05 AM MST reply actions
Lets put it this way
Should the Broncos move out of state, they would be dead to me, the Broncos were and are the idenity of Colorado and Denver, they were the first professional franchise (other than the Bears, minor league baseball) so they helped provide Colorado with a national identity and in turn we provided the Broncos with an idenity. Moving them would be akin to the Browns leaving Cleveland and the Colts leaving Baltimore, there would be no love for them if they left.
