Mike Shanahan has done a poor job handling the Donovan McNabb situation - ESPN
First off, Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb was way too diplomatic on his weekly radio show Tuesday. Along with saying that he felt "disrespected" by the way coach Mike Shanahan benched him this past week, he could've been far more hostile with his opinions. Because McNabb didn't go there, I'll do it for him: Shanahan, from all indications, has a lost a step as a head coach.

Week 16 of the NFL schedule looms, and no one's talking about resting starters for the playoffs this year. Just 32 games are left in the regular season, and all we've got settled is one division champion (Chicago) and a third of the 12-team playoff field (the Patriots, Steelers, Falcons and Bears).
Michael Vick's redemption among top 10 NFL stories of 2010 - Don Banks - SI.com
1. The redemption of Michael Vick. There are comebacks, and then there are comebacks, and Vick's career renaissance is in a league of its own. Nothing more than a bit player for the Eagles during the 2009 season -- his first season back in the league after serving almost two years in prison because of his dogfighting conviction -- Vick has electrified the NFL in 2010 like no one else. Though he was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback for Atlanta, Vick has elevated his game to a new level since he became the Philadelphia starter in Week 2. In a Week 10 Monday-night game at Washington, he put on a tour de force performance, becoming the first QB in league history to pass for 300 yards with four touchdowns and rush for at least 80 yards and two more scores in the same game. Once a pariah, he's now an MVP candidate who has the Eagles on the cusp of a playoff berth.

Even when he's supposed to be angry...
Orton looks and sounds defeated. Interesting comment regarding coming back next year, only expecting do so as the starter. Sounds like he might well be gunning for a trade?
I’d love Orton to stay next year as backup in the event of a failed Tebow experiment, but it’s not looking all too likely.
Thanks for the tracks John
Wow.... that's an interesting spin.
Orton can’t get a break. If he handles the news with class, as he has, you say he sounds defeated. If he were vocally angry, we would scorn him for dividing the locker room. I prefer him to handle this the way he has handled it. Everyone knows the Broncos want to fill seats and see Tebow in a game situation. It’s no longer about who gives us the best chance to win. Field the guy that gives you the best chance to make the right decisions to win in the future. Oh, and filling the seats in the process helps.

I don't know that he handled it with class
Seemed a little petty to me. Don’t get me wrong he has every reason to be upset, I think he’s proved everybody that he’s a sure fire starter in the NFL. Yet he still gets no love! I get that.
I’ve no doubt that Orton gives us the best chance to win our last 2 games. At this point I’d predict that he probably gives us the best chance next year too. I think his interview just summarizes what a lot of us here think of Orton, instead of showing some fire or passion, we get little comments. I guess I expected him to either handle it by saying the right things (accept the decision, challenge for the role blah blah) or come out and say what he needs to say. Instead we got a flat response with what I honestly thought was a pretty poor attitude, taking subtle shots at the decision makers.
Just my opinion, but say what you need to say or keep stum.

I don't agree that he obviously gives us the best chance to win.
Tebow showed quite a bit, I thought. He definitely gives us a better chance to turn something into nothing, especially on 3rd downs and broken plays.

Why would the Denver Broncos risk Kyle Orton to serious injury when we're 3-11?
There’s no reason to play you main starter when the season is over…Now Tebow is getting some valuable OJT and we’ll see if it works. I think it will with his determination and grit.
by bfree2bronc on Dec 23, 2010 11:15 AM MST up reply actions
Good point in a way. Nobody else benches their starters at 3-11 though unless they're trying to see if the 2nd string guy can take the 1st string job...
If you’re 3-11, you’re either looking for that next guy or your starters NEED THE WORK.

Orton is a starter in this league...
I think he’s proven that. More than just an average starter too. Put him in the right place, a team with a good D and he will do well. If he starts talking like he’s happy to be a back-up then the rest of the league will begin to think of him that way too, that’s just the way this league operates. He should not be happy to be the back-up, nor should Tim, we shouldn’t want those type of players on the team as fans anyway. I didn’t see anything wrong with what Orton said, this is not divisive…the rest of the team understands I guarantee you, even Tebow but bottom line, Tebow is the starter, should be the starter. The losses cannot be put all on Orton this year, that’s unfair to say. Our D is so horrible that you can’t expect anyone (Manning or Brady) to overcome that. As a matter of fact, let’s quit being so sophisticated about this, our record this year is so bad because of our D. You put our offense with the Bears D and I guarantee you we win our division hands down, the NFC central, hands down. Tebow is the right way to go but let’s not kid ourselves or diminish the D’s responsibility for this year’s train wreck!

Great post
If you are at all a competitor then it would bother you to be starting all year and then not at the end of the year. I think Tebow playing this past 3 weeks is the right decision, but I think I would be more bothered if Orton wasn’t bothered that he’s not playing the last 3 games.
I think he's plenty bothered. I'm sure he's pissed. But professionals don't take their frustrations to the media.

i like kyle and all
but i think he’s at best an average starter. he’s a stop gap QB like he has been here. anyone who’s put the whole disaster on kyle is a fool, but just the same, you can’t blame the defense for everything either, when they’ve been off the field for only four downs at a time the entire season. orton=kitna imo. and that’s not a horrible thing to be. i hope he finds a starting job somewhere else, but i’m not worried about having huge regrets if he does.
I'm not sugarcoating this.
by oxmouth on Dec 23, 2010 10:09 AM MST up reply actions 1 recs
thats not true at all. Look at the numbers for the first half of the season the offense was moving the ball like crazy . In fact against the RAVENS defense we didnt have not ONE three and out so how did we end up surrendering almost 30 points to them ?
It didnt matter whether we moved the ball or not the defense simply is not up to par for this team to even be competitive its actually worse than in 2008
the broncos are 2nd or 3rd worst in the league on converting third downs. most QBs will tell you that that’s where a QB makes his money (dilfer just repeated that on ESPN about what tebow needs to do). i’m not an orton hater by any stretch, but lots of yardage racked up doesn’t convince me of his greatness.
but no doubt on the defense. they stink to high heaven and their stink is getting worse as the season goes on.
I'm not sugarcoating this.
What you posted means little to back up what you actually said .
they’ve been off the field for only four downs at a time the entire season
the offense stalled on 3rd downs but rarely went 3 and out because we normally were picking up 4 more downs with big 2nd down plays .
You are posting me 3rd down percentages and Im telling you that we didnt have a 3 and out against the Ravens but still gave up nearly 30 points
up until the raiders game 3rd or 4th downs were not an issue more than a few failed redzone attempts on 4th down because we never got to them we were passing the ball that well.
When you always have to go 80-90 yards a drive to score primarily by pass you are always going to have 3rd down issues
I didnt say the yardage made him great I directly disputed your claim that the defense was excused because we went 3 and out when thats flat out not true .
3rd down percentages does not mean 3 and out
Dude
So you’re giving the Ravens game as an example. Whoop-de-do. If you want, I’ll give you 7 other games this season where Orton absolutely sucked in crucial situations and I’m not okay with that.
“Moving the ball like crazy” – the 08 team did that too, and now everyone here makes fun of Cutler for “moving the ball like crazy” but screwing up in the red zone. Orton actually was worse than Cutler in this regard… So take with that what you will.
Dude will you give me 7 other games where all we did was go 3 and out so the defense was tired ? Im talking prior to the first Raiders game again try reading the post next time
You didnt even read my posts or the post I responded to
Who mentioned the 08 you come in on the backend of the post without even reading it . I think clarified exactly what I was responding so Ill take your post as someone who either cant read or the real answer dont care and post the typical rubbish response .
It was a team failure
Orton had games where he played well and games where he played poorly, same could be said for the defense and running game and ST. Orton lost us games, but he didn’t lose us all 11, not by a long shot.
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
I'd say Orton is above average
The problem is he’s just a game manager. With the right team, his intelligence and skill set could easily take him to the conference championship. I mean, I believe he’s much better than Cassel, and look what he’s done for the Chiefs. The Broncos will never settle for a game manager though, we want another football player at quarterback.

Pretty irritating to me that Orton has his panties in a wad
Dude…I don’t care how many yards you threw for…you didn’t win games. Yeah it is mostly on the defense, but we need a flippin LEADER on the football field as a QB…not someone who crawls into a fetal position when the pocket collapses.
Sorry, but I don’t get it…he’s being semi-classy with his statements, but then underhanded by “I want to be here next year and would expect to be the starter”. Sorry man…you reap what you sow.
And about him being a starter in this league…yeah he’s a starter in this league as much as Trent Dilfer was. Yeah…Orton COULD win a superbowl if he played for Pittsburgh or Baltimore and had a dominant defense out there to win him games.
"Bombs dropping down overhead. Underground. It's instilled to want to live." -EV
I don’t dislike Orton, but some of his comments did bug me a bit. I mean he can be upset and it really matters not if his comments bugged me, but his attitude seemed pretty horrible. Just my opinion.
"Who says Tim Tebow can't throw the ball...? Whoever said that, they didn't know what they were talking about."
-Gus Johnson
I would be happy with a superbowl as a result of a dominating D and
an average QB. Would you rather have a Superbowl trophy or a great QB without ever winning one? (As Bronco fans we know what that almost felt like before 97-98!) Think Marino and the Dolphins…..
Also, Orton was asked questions I’m sure. I don’t think he called the media to voice his perspective. He was asked a question and answered honestly. The guy was obviously told when the Broncos signed him to an extension that he was the guy through ‘11… and Studs has not said to us or Orton that the job is Tebows next year, I’m guessing he told Orton, “hey you’re hurting, we need to give the rookie a look-see, open competition for next year…” I think Orton has been a leader on and off the field this year. He’s just does not have the charisma and leadership qualities that Tebow has. That’s why my vote is for Tebow over Orton btw. I don’t think he’s being underhanded by simply saying: "I want to be here next year and would expect to be the starter" , I hope all 53 guys on the team have that kind of drive and expectations of themselves. Let’s consider the opposite statement being said: “I’m not sure I want to be here next year and I’m excited at the prospect of being a back-up”…which guy do you want on your team. I would love Orton as Tebows back-up next year, sure it’s not what he wants, but that would be an optimal thing for our team if it happened.

So Orton shouldnt upset that hes not playing ? You hate him that much that you expect his reaction to just smile sit down and not say anything ? REALLY ?
He reaped what he sowed ? So its basically Ortons fault that we lost all these games ?

It seems to me that people are inferring a lot from one or two games when he was supposedly playing injured so what about the first 8-9 when he was playing tops in the league he was doing that without even caring ?
It seems to me that if we take it as some of you are saying not necessarily Mcgeorge that Orton could surpass his play of the first 7-8 games if he played angry more . Would he somehow eclipse 600 yards passing and throw 65 tds if he only played angry ?
He was playing awfully well at one point fioor someone who was aloof and disinterested and considering how many people run around here saying he has minimal talent he could lead the league in passing with minimal talent and not caring at all ?
LOL
Im just saying at certain point here ………
Sure looks like you hate him
He played very well in some games we lost, yet gets no love. He needs to sit for Tebow, but it’s pretty obvious you don’t like the guy.

What Dilfer's done in the league is irrelevant
The fact that he wasn’t a very good QB doesn’t invalidate him as an analyst.
Of it it does then you need to stop posting, because I guarantee DIlfer is a better QB than you :P
It's okay
If Tebow said those words, you’d say he has fire. I think Orton needs to go, but Tebow has said similar things all season, and we all said he had desire to play, Orton says it, he’s got his panties in a wad.

I have a question.
Does anyone know if Orton was due to collect any kind of bonus money for a record setting season. Not to sound to cynical…..but could there be any monies that he’s losing out by not playing? Or any monies the Broncos are saving by him not attaining certain milestone?
I know in baseball, they have bonuses for quite a number of statistical milestones.
If Orton is pissed(and I think rightfully so), perhaps there is a monetary component to all of this.

Said it before and I will say it again...
Orton had a chance to win five games this season with his play alone. They ended:
INT x 2 – JAX, IND (they went down the field and scored a TD after the INT, but the game was closer than the score looks)
Fumble x 1 – SF
0 Passes Completed x 2 – NYJ, STL
I’m not counting the 2nd KC game either because he only had one play left. We would have been in playoff contention if he had stepped up in just three of those games.
He chokes under the pressure. He is a VERY solid QB if the defense can hold the lead, but he won’t put the team on his back and get the win.

and Ill say this
So Orton is the blame for the Indy not our anemic rushing attack who couldnt run it in from the one ?
Against Jax two 15 yard penalties by Mcbean after we had taken momentum ON THE ROAD after the long delay led to Jax getting an easy td and since the coach didnt have any faith in the defense after that we went for it on 4th with 7-8 minutes to go in the game
Against the jets Orton drove us down the field with under 5 minutes to play and setup the fg that gave us the lead . Our defense then blew it by allowing the Jets to turn a 4th and 6 from the midfield into a 1st and goal ? Yet you blame Orton because he couldnt go 85 yards against the jets AGAIN ?
Every QB is only sold if the defense can hold a lead just check out the Patriots last year when they lost 5-6 games in the 4th quarter because the defense couldn’t hold a lead .
They didnt blame Brady especially when they knew they had protection issues no they went out strengthened the defense and got some TEs to help protect him .
As I told someone when they said " if he wouldve stepped up " at that point in those games we were in those games because Orton and the passing game had been the only ones that were stepping up .
Orton can play better in those situations but as someone who has watched every game this season so far several times Orton was the least of our worries .
A defense that cant hold a lead in the NFL is worthless.
When I watch these comebacks around the NFL they are all team based with everyone making plays not just one guy . ESPN may only show you one guy but they dont show you the TO or the sack or the big kick return or the great catch that sets the QB up .
Orton
is generally classy but it sounds like he’s whining right now. Kyle, I’ve had your back since your arrival but not winning tends to piss Broncos fans off, so sorry. I appreciate what you’ve done but Tebow is playing well now and he is our future. You’re not. There was a time I wanted you to be but you showed that you never can be. Thanks for the good you did but the way you played down the stretch was terrible.

Watch the interview at the DP
IMO, it didn’t strike me as whining. He’s just subdued as always in his communications with the media. I think he’s trying to speak his mind without being overly harsh.

OK
that’s fair. I don’t even have to see the interview, SDcat, I know that Orton is a man of integrity, just like i am. Let me clarify something.
I THINK KYLE ORTON, THE PERSON, IS A WONDERFUL GUY. He’s much better than Cutler in that regard and does his best.
However, I THINK KYLE ORTON, THE QB, IS SOMEONE WE CANNOT WIN CONSISTENTLY WITH. He lacks the fire.
Sometimes, you get lucky and get the Peyton Manning type, the good person who is a good football player as well.
Sorry SdCat, I am a jerk for thinking what I did.
I wish Kyle Orton well in life and wish we could win with him but I don’t think that will happen.
I think he’s too mentally fragile (I’m going to hell for saying that because I’ve always loved KO, but I have to think about who can get the job done for the team on the field and based on what I’ve seen, Tebow seems to be more that guy than Orton is.
I hope Orton won’t hate me if I ever meet him in person because once again, I think he’s a remarkable human being

I guess for me you just can't always tell a person's mental toughness
based on how quiet or subdued in his communications. I’ve also seen super fiery screaming and yelling leaders that aren’t necessarily the best players and they still make mistakes and teams still lose…

In football though
The best QB’s are the leaders.
1. Peyton Manning – Most people tend to view him as the coach of that team and not Jim Caldwell.
2. Tom Brady – everything I’ve read says that he basically runs practice, pushes players around him, and in general is unquestionably THE leader on that team. You’ve seen him this year – he’s putting together one of the best seasons of his career and a large part of that is the amount he’s pushed those around him.
3. Drew Brees – Watch him. He’s the heart and soul of that team and everyone who’s watched the Saints knows it.
I agree that you don’t have to be fiery to be mentally tough, but at the QB position it’s hard to find a great, mentally tough QB who is quiet and shy. You can find it at other positions, but it’s extremely rare at QB because you are THE leader of the team.
A QB is more important to his team than any position is to any team in any sport. He’s more important than the captain/goalie on a hockey team… More important than the ace on a baseball team… More important than the goalie on a soccer team. More important than the PG on a b-ball team. It’s kind of a special case where leadership is much more important than normal.
I agree Tebow needs to start
But where did you see " Tebow is playing well now?" Because last I checked Tebow is playing because Orton was injured and now he’s playing to see what he’s got. I would love a link saying Orton was benched for his play.
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
However
I treasure Orton’s days here more than Cutler’s. At least, Orton isn’t an a-hole

Here's an idea Kyle
Instead of whining when your starting job is taken away, step up and play well when it counts: early in games before they get out of hand, and late when the score is close. If you had done either of these, we most likely wouldn’t be having this discussion. Your limitations were laid out for all to see and you did nothing to alter the perception. You are what you are – a journeyman QB, and you will still be in the NFL for quite some time to come. That is more than almost anyone else can say. Accept it, suck it up, and show some leadership for the next team that takes a flier on you. Don’t try to make your season out to be something it wasn’t.
Yes
improv, you’re also right. It makes me feel really bad to say it, but we journalists have to be honest. Orton doesn’t get the job done on the field when we need it and that’s what it comes down to. There have been so many winnable games this season and a signal-caller who can provide the fire gets the job done. Orton, you’re a great person but Tebow is the better leader and the better QB.

And where was Tebow when the score was close???? Thats right 6 points in the 2nd half and 2-12 on 3rd down… But i know its not his fault it was the coaches….

I
do blame McCoy for handcuffing him when we were down 30-23 and got the safety and I do blame Lance Ball for flubbing a catch that I routinely made during pregame warmups in high school. Yes, I sucked at football so I never playd

The offense score 2 TD’s in the first QTR…then 3FG’s in 3 QTR… The offense went 3 and out on 7 different drives… The offense was 2-12 on 3rd down. Ball did drop a TD… But the OAK CB also dropped an INT that landed in Lloyds chest for a TD so lets call it a wash…

Within the sarcasm lies the truth
Down the entire 2nd half and 7 pass plays. Yeah, that’s coaching. We’ll never know if Tebow could have done anything in the 2nd half of that game – McCoy wasn’t willing to let him try. Would we have won? Most likely not. But you didn’t see Tebow hanging his head and looking like a lost puppy either.
Did you watch the game????
1. Tebow was definitely not given much of chance to win when we’re calling running plays on 3rd and 8.
2. It’s a rookie in his first EVER start. Orton was much worse in his first ever start.
Maybe it's been pointed out already
But what is Orton supposed to say? I doubt he’s the one calling press conferences to complain about being benched. Journalists are asking him the obvious questions, and he has to have some sort of response. In general, I think he is handling it with about as much class as he can.
Any teams that might be thinking of trading for him don’t want to hear that he has no problems being benched – you want competitors at the quarterback position. And yet he has managed to say what he needs to without really resorting to whining or name-calling.
I don’t see any reason to read anything into what Orton says. I think he is taking it just about as well as we should expect, and I commend him for that.

I just realized that I sort of view Orton's situation
as similar to Jake Plummer’s when he was benched in favor of Cutler. (I liked Cutler as a player but didn’t think Plummer deserved what he got. )
Plummer was the scapegoat for all the woes in that season, and I think Orton is the scapegoat this year.
Does anyone else see this similarity?

Nah,
Plummer was 7-5 when he got benched. Orton was 3-9. In the end, both are probably unfair in some respect, but the Plummer benching was just dumb IMO.
I couldn't remember our record....and yes Plummer's was just plain dumb
I’m hoping someone can tell me if there is a stat that says how much one player either contributed to a win or loss. Like they have in basketball. I’m just curious…..

I'm actually pretty surprised ANYONE thinks Orton's comments were whiney.
What do you want him to say? I’m very happy they benched me for Tim and I wish him the best? He is upset. He got bench in the midst of a decent season. We all see the reasons for the benching, but if I put myself his shoes, my responses are a lot less passive than his. He will get another (well deserved) shot, I hope he does well with it. I think we are all ready for the future and i don’t think playing Tebow is a mistake, but I also think Orton is a stand up dude who is taking a bad situation pretty well.

Anyone wanna clarify exactly what these charges are that Dumervil is facing
and if its anything significant to get worried about
And now for something completely different
All the headline said was Dumervil facing charges
but the article didn’t say much else, just said the incident occured because he forgot his ID and wasn’t allowed into the Raiders game at Invesvo
And now for something completely different

You know why Orton isn't the starter anymore?
Because no way in hell does he go INTO Oakland and act like this:

Tebow is fearless, and while it may not seem like a big deal to us, those players on the field WANT to put 110% out for a quarterback that would risk his neck just as much as any other player on the field would. If it’ll get the win, Tebow will do it. He’ll take a hit, and clearly he can deliver them too.
Kyle Orton, while having a much different kind of confidence, doesn’t seem to do much to INSPIRE the guys around him. For example:
You are a factory worker and you work with 2 managers. One manager is the quiet guy who may not say much or do anything extravagant, he just clocks in, helps meet quotas, and goes home. Not much is done throughout the day that’s too bad, but nothing is great either. It’s average (and not in a bad way, necessarily)
The second guy is lively. He comes out and helps you clean up your work station at the end of the shift because he knows you’ll have to stay late if it’s not done. He laughs with the regular-Joes, but he also does everything he can to make sure the entire crew is producing, all while making his quotas (being average) and then some.
I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer the second guy if I’m an employee. And in no way am I knocking Orton. He’s a solid starter that will maintain the game and season for you. If your team sucks, it reflects exactly the same on his performance and he sucks too. When the rest of the team is lights out, he looks that way also. Orton is exactly what you put around him. Tebow inspires guys to go above their normal routines and put out 110%.
Does any player want to be the guy that didn’t/couldn’t work harder than the quarterback in practice and in games? I know I’d hate to be that guy. That guy is a goat. No one wants to be the goat.
27--29--11 May all your spirits rest in peace.
