Yes, why would you ask to play Orton on Sunday, well let me say it is nothing against Tebow, follow me after the jump.
I think this past game may not of been a coronation of Tebow as the long-term future of the Broncos, what I think it did show was that he deserves being named the starter for next season and having a complete offseason getting reps as the starter and gettiong the majority of work in the preseason. But this post is not about Tebow as the QB of next season, what this is about is the value of Orton this off-season. Having Tebow start the last game probably would only help ticket sales and not really improve Tebow ability to perfrom for next season. What the bigger picture is though, is being able to trade Kyle Orton after the season and get good value for him. The problem is that Orton last few games have left a putrid taste in potential suitors mouths and his 9 million dollar contract isn’t going to be any more attractive.
So here is my theory, start Orton and try to showcase him. He obviously knows he won’t be playing to be the starter here next year, but he will be playing to show other teams he can start for them. This gives Orton an decent audition tape. It gives other potential teams a view of Orton that was similar to how he faired his first half of the season, versus how he faired the second half. Start driving the price up for him now rather than have him rot on the bench and lower the price tag. I know it may not be what the Tebow fans want, and I can't blame them, but if Tebow is going to be the starter next year, we need to start finding better pieces to put around him for next season, and that starts by getting better value for Orton.
