Let me set the scene for you. 20 years ago.
NFL draft, a couple buddies (the smart ones) are over, beer, brats, lots of different meats, possibly 2 tvs, one for techmo bowl and a draft guide...Was this you? Still is?
I remember getting my first Pro Football Weekly Draft guide (still the definitive guide) sent to my dorm room in college (1987) and thinking it was the biggest score ever. That same week, I saw some guys reading a draft guide in 7/11 and we started talking draft. Instant friends the next 4 years.
I remember calling my girlfriend and telling her I met some friends and wouldnt be back until the evening. She was wondering, "who is this guy?".
When I got out of college, my old high school buddies indulged me and hung out for the draft but then marriage, kids, mortgages, yard work, then soccer games etc has taken over. UFC replaced video games. Friends sending texts while the Broncos are on the clock. I can say we never tuned into the Bravo channel and lets about as un-neutered they became.
Last year, I couldnt get one of my buddies to get together for the draft other than a token hour or two. And anyone that knows the draft knows an hour is pointless in the draft. It's a friggin all day commitment! I felt like the troll under the bridge.
New Year's eve resolution, make more friends that like this very website.
What are your draft memories?
Happy New Year!
