I have always been one to give Josh McDaniels a chance but it was getting old this season. It wasnt that we were losing close games, which we were, it was that we were losing the same exact way we did in 08 and even worse. Kyle Orton showed glimpses of greatness throughout the year but continued to throw away games and reminds me of the Shane Falco at the beginning of the movie the Replacements. Just does not want the ball in key situations and cannot get the job done.
McDaniels came in and wiped out the whole roster signing defensive players to fill in for a year or two as he would continue to build his offense through the draft. He got his quarterback and the pieces are put set in stone in front of him on offense and i dont think he was given enough time to build his defense. The 2009 draft was horrible, and although McDaniels is the head coach, Pat Bowlen did a horrible job of giving McDaniels the resources he needed. He should have been given a general manager who has done this before and knows how to be successful in this league. Nobody knows what happened in Dove Valley but by McDaniels attitude i can only guess that he continually strong handed Xanders which i think should not have happened. Although we had mediocrity in the last few years of Shannahan, i think McDaniels should have been given another year. And i know I will probably get a lot of heat because this franchise is too good miss the playoffs five years in a row, but Josh should have had another off season to build the defense that should have been in place a while ago. McDaniels had problems with the egos on the offensive side of the ball and instead of fixing the god awful defense he just put a few bandaids on it and totally revamped the whole offense. All the questions will be asked of what would this team's record be if the cutler offense stayed and defense was totally addressed in the past two off seasons. Thats where MxcDaniels really became more of a problem because he acted like a five year old and had to get exactly what he wanted for example with cutler, marshall, hillis.....but also the firing of Mike Nolan and just adding more defensive woes which Broncos fans could not endure any longer. We had offensive players set in place and McDaniels still could not find a way to work with any of them and spent the last two seasons trying to install a new offense that honestly was scoring less than the 08 team.
I think Josh could honestly take a team far into the playoffs for a long time but he will really have to adjust his attitude and and honestly just stop being a five year old and share and work with others. He has a good system and idea but he has a lot to learn and really needs to find the right team to ever have success. I wish Josh the best, its tough he had to make the early coaching mistakes with us but he will learn and improve.
Its time to move on the fans and players just did not seem to follow McDaniels the way they should have. I think we definitely need an experienced defensive coordinator to take over this team now. Possible ideas are Leslie Frazier, Rob Ryan, Sean McDermott, Mike Zimmer, and of course the Cowhers and Grudens. I think the former head coaches that have turned coordinator and have had more success like Gregg Williams and Mike Nolan should not be in the discussion. McDermott, Frazier and Zimmer are 4-3 coaches so that would take a big overhaul but theyre all good coaches. Im excited for another big offseason and draft this year Go broncos lets get it done thats the most important thing. GO BRONCOS
