How Much of a Rebuilding Job - Breaking Down the Roster (O)
I'm still in a bit of shock after hearing the news last night - saw it at 11pm my time and stayed up til 2am reading all the fallout. Whilst I advocated giving Josh at least until the bye next season, I didn't expect the firing to go down as it did. Anyway, what's done is done...I read a quote from Adam Schefter which stated that not many coaches will be interested in this job as it is seen around the league as a major rebuilding project. Going through the roster mentally, I didn't see it that way from a talent perspective, so I thought I'd break down the roster with my player evaluations...I'd like to hear your thoughts afterwards. I'll do the O first, and the D later (probably when I've had supper). Unfortunately there is no fancy formatting or nice pictures to make this post look more exciting, but I hope the content's up to snuff for most of you.
QB
Kyle Orton - I swear, the guy must be one of the most divisive of this team's fanbase since Jake Plummer. The polarisation between those who love and hate him is verging on the ridiculous. What we know about the guy - he's a solid starter, although he has not proven to be clutch this season. He's suffered from lack of a running game and inconsistent pass pro; however, when the game is on the line he's not been at his best. Whatever your opinion, I'm sure several teams in the league would see him as an upgrade over their current QB. I for one would be happy to see the guy starting next season, although I realise that it's becoming more evident that he is not the long term solution. Starter Talent
Tim Tebow - who knows what he's capable of? At best he could be an elite QB, at worst a serious redzone threat. Despite the rumblings I'm hearing about him not getting his shot now that McD has gone, you have to say that any offensive coach who doesn't give him a fair shot at the QB position is an idiot. Potential Elite Talent
Brady Quinn - the face of the franchise, he's bringing the clipboard look back into fashion. Backup
HB
Knowshon Moreno - another guy who fans like to rag on, the guy's coming on nicely now that the line are finally producing holes for him, coupled with him fully healing from a bunch of nagging injuries. He's got potential as a workhorse who is a solid pass blocker and safety valve in the passing game. The guy is a good talent - not a breakaway runner, but give him the holes and he'll hammer you. Take away the holes and he still rarely gets caught in the backfield. Starter Talent
Correll Buckhalter - useful last season, now at the tail end of his career and, well, not very useful any more, as evidenced by the exponential decrease in his snap numbers this season. Needs to Retire
Laurence Maroney - former first round pick but hasn't looked very decisive or explosive. It's worth noting that he's only ever played in the NE system in the pros and may undergo a renaissance in, say, a ZBS; however, he's really shown nothing to this point on either team. Marginal/Not NFL Talent
Lance Ball - has been getting quite a few reps in place of Messrs Maroney and Buckhalter. The guy seems run pretty well and has value on STs. Backup
FB
Spencer Larsen - developing into a fine blocker and has also had his number called in both the running and passing game. Absolutely ferocious player and is a key cog on our STs. Another player who coaches love - you know you can count on him. (Developing) Starter Talent
WR
Brandon Lloyd - possibly the nicest surprise this season, Lloyd has shown he can do it all - circus catches, catches in traffic over the middle and even the easy ones (which used to be his problem). Obviously, it remains to be seen whether he can do it again next season with the inevitable scheme changes and he does have some weaknesses (can get roughed up at the line); however, the evidently has the talent. Starter Talent
Jabar Gaffney - solid, consistent veteran. He's not been amazing as a full time starter this year, and he's probably better off as a rotational guy who can start in a pinch. Rotational/Backup Talent
Eddie Royal - has had inconsistent production in McD's system, and hasn't really had a great connection with Kyle. However, there's no denying that the guy is a playmaker when given some space in addition to his value to STs. Struggles when facing the jam; however, as a Z/slot receiver, he can attack the opponent's weakpoint for massive damage. Starter Talent
Demaryius Thomas - when I first saw him run, my eyes almost popped out of my head. He's been in the ice bath a little too much this season; however, he has almost limitless potential and looks poised to force his way into the lineup next season. Potential Elite Talent
Eric Decker - has begun to see the field a little more in Thomas' absence and has had some nice, crucial catches. He's tough and has excellent hands and could very well be a starter in a year or two. Potential Starter Talent
Matthew Willis - showed some flashes in camp but has hit IR. Could carve out a career as a rotational receiver/STs player and evidently has the talent to stick in the league. Rotational/Backup
TE
Daniel Graham - one of the reasons why Jay Cutler made it out of 2007 alive, his blocking and receiving skills have both declined in the last two seasons. Considering his fat contract, he could be a financial casualty in the offseason. Still a serviceable blocker, but nothng more. Rotational/Backup
Dan Gronkowski - has made himself pretty useful, although we evidently still got shortchanged in terms of talent in the trade. However, the guy has proved to be versatile and has good blocking skills (although he always appears to be really surprised when he catches the ball). Rotational/Backup
Richard Quinn - one of McD's favourite whipping boys, he also got arrested for domestic violence in the offseason (I think...correct me if I'm wrong). Either way, has shown that he can block on occasion; hasn't shown that he can line up in the right place. Marginal/Not NFL Talent
OT
Ryan Clady - All-Pro talent who's struggled with injury this season, although his recovery has been remarkable. A basketball-less offseason to heal should see him return to form. Elite Talent
Ryan Harris - also struggled with injuries but is still a fine tackle. I know some people are willing to let him walk, and RT is a relatively easy position to replace; however, we know what we have in Harris. Starter Talent
Chris Clark - can't even pretend I know anything about the guy. He likely wouldn't be put in even if a tackle were injured. Marginal/Not NFL Talent
OG
Zane Beadles - growing into his role as an LG, hopefully that is where he will stay for a number of years. Also valuable in being able to play LG, LT and RT (although I wouldn't want him at the latter for a particularly long time). Developing Starter Talent
Chris Kuper - has proved his worth in both the PBS and ZBS and is one of the leaders on the line. Potential Bronco for life right here. Starter Talent
Stanley Daniels - he has a nice story and he's a guy you want to root for; however, he looked pretty lost in his brief outing as starter and is now a gameday scratch. Backup/Marginal Talent
Russ Hochstein - G/C and has been nothing but a liability at either position, even in spot duty. Needs to Retire
C
JD Walton - at times has struggled, at times has excelled. Learning on the job is immensely difficult for a rookie centre and he's acquitted himself well. Should be a starter for many years. Developing Starter Talent
Eric Olsen - hopefully can take Hochstein's place and do it better; ultimately, I have no idea how good he is, but he's likely a career backup. Backup
Breakdown:
Elite - 1, Potential Elite - 2, Starter - 6, Developing/Potential Starter - 4, Backup - 7, Marginal/Needs to Retire/Be Cut - 6
Overall, our O is in pretty good shape and we have elite/potential elite talent at 3 of the most important positions. The 5 or 6 marginal players are pretty easy to replace with general roster turnover; obviously the OL seriously lacks depth and this needs to be addressed in the late draft rounds and possibly FA. The most glaring weakness by far is at TE and I hope this is the only offensive pick we make in the first 5 of the next draft. Ultimately we have 13 players with the requisite talent to start (yes, I know TT's designation will be a point of contention for many, but he seems to have all the tools physically) which bodes well. On top of this, the O is very young; second time round, we'd better hope that our new coach doesn't decide to dismantle this lot.

You don't think Brandon Lloyd is elite?
Granted, his previous seasons don’t tell the tale… But this season he has not only put up the numbers, he has made RIDICULOUS catches.
Great review
And I agree, our offense is pretty set, and as the season conlcudes and our line gets more time together, next season should see as little change as possible.
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
Man...
These are the same conversations we were having after getting rid of Shanny… I pray that whoever comes in sees things the same way as we do and leaves the good pieces in place and goes after the broken pieces to fix first.
"And on the 8th day, God created Tim Tebow. And He saw that it was good. And He said, "I can now retire. Go forth and make Touchdowns through Running and Passing."

Huh
I also missed Lendale White who was looking good in preseason before his injury. Obvious rotational player.
I agree with most of these evaluations.
However I think that the majority of the rebuilding for this team has to be on the defensive side of the ball. I would be interested to read some further evaluations for the D.

Tebow should be in the category of who the hell knows.
I’m serious. Some guys you can tell like Matt Ryan, you didn’t know if he was going to be elite or just an average QB, but you were pretty sure he wasn’t going to be below average. Tebow just has so many question marks. I think he has as much a chance to be really really good or be really really bad. I just don’t know and I don’t think anybody does.
Tebow has so many comparable qualities to Matty Ice
it’s not even funny. He may have intangibles that have never been seen before at this level.
Actually as a Tebow fan
I call that bull crap. McD and his teammates this season said Tebow had a good work ethic, but they said there were other players, Dawk, Orton and Woodyard who were working just as hard. Come on man, Tebow is a great player, but “He may have intangibles that have never been seen before at this level” is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. You make it sound like Tebow’s work ethic and leadership are on a level never before seen, some Great White Buffalo, come on, that just makes you sound silly, and like I said, I love Tebow, but I wouldn’t dream of saying his intangibles are on another level.
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
How do you know they aren't
Jon Gruden, Bill Belichick, Mike Mayock, Tony Dungy, Michael Lombardi, even Walter at Walter Football who is normally hateful – just like you- have all said different. Watch game tape of Florida during Tebow’s tenure there and tell me the guy has just decent intangibles. You can call that bull crap all you want, but at the end of the day, that’s just a guess too. I support the future of our franchise unlike many who’d rather see Orton drag us into the gutter. You speak as if I instigated all of this – go back and read the flow of this post. All hail to Godofdeath, whose screen name gives me insight into his feelings. Happy much?
I did watch Tebow in Florida
I lived in Tampa for years. I know Tebow has great intangibles, but it’s a load of crap to say he’s on a whole new level. You list Gruden and others who comment about Tebow’s ethic, but they never say he’s heads above everyone else, I’d love links. As for your second comment, what are you talking about, I’m responding to your comment on Tebow’s godlike intangibles, not about the comment you are refering to, so stop trying to twist things, it’s fun, I know, but it rarely wins arguments.
Also, since when does an internet screen name actually mean anything?
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
by the way
“Whatever happens next year, happens – I just want to win behind whoever is taking snaps behind center.” You completely failed to read this part and judged me on your bias.
I think it’s quite likely that Maroney is better than we think, given that he was playing behind the line when the line was at its worst.
I also think that we fans have a tendency to not see what kind of blocking job that the tight ends are doing, particularly because so much of whether or not they are playing well depends on what the play call was, which is knowledge we don’t have. It could be that Quinn is playing extremely well as a blocker, Graham too.
A good post, but you need to reel in your opinion of Tebow. Maybe this perspective from
outside the world of the Broncos will help. Imo, most Broncos fans have been completely swayed into unrealistic evaluation of Tebow’s NFL potential.

Athletically, he has all the tools. Yes, there is a plethora of questions surrounding the mental aspect of his game; however, we have no idea how developed it is and we won’t until we see the guy play. And whilst his throwing motion does need adjusting, a perfect throwing motion is not a prerequisite for a guy to be an elite QB. His work ethic is second to none and his leadership ability is well documented…and, in a really hand-waving way, he just seems to have that “it” factor. No other QB in recent history has undergone the scrutiny that Tebow has – every single deficiency, no matter how microscopic, has been picked out and cited as a reason why he’ll fail. Ultimately, we have to wait to see what the guy can do on the field, but there’s no questioning the tools he has.
people have secret agendas against Tebow
for a multitude of reasons. Why was he so scrutinized but not Jamarcus Russell – it’s obvious that propaganda has been in part, at work here.
It's over! Our new HC has been selected. Both the HC and Owner want KO as the starting QB!
Sorry they don’t agree with your opinion. time for you to stop the Tebow trolling.
grow up Rocko
your Tebow agenda is so strong, the reek of it is starting to rub many people the wrong way. My post wasn’t about you – it was about the media. The supporters of Orton are severely dwindling man, you can like him, but to worship the man like he’s Elway is super creepy.
You and rocko1 are the same
Both are blind and foolishly holding to your man. Get over it, and support the TEAM!
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
If Kyle Orton
could make a clutch play and quit being so inept when the pass rush is on, I would have no problem, at all, calling him the man for the next 2 or so years. I’m afraid that other people would quit on the team, much like Cutler, and follow Orton elsewhere – not giving Tebow a fair shake.
Since when is the NFL fair?
Who cares if Tebow doesn’t get his chance, boo hoo. I want Tebow to start, I think it’s time, but I don’t get upset because he didn’t. The NFL isn’t fair, that’s how it goes, those who get their shots make the most of them or fail, if you don’t get a shot, bummer. Is it right, no, but that’s how it goes. Is it fair Orton is taking the blame for this losing season, no, is it fair Tebow has to wait behind Orton, no. The NFL isn’t fair, and hasn’t been and likely won’t ever be.
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
I'll wager a truce to you Rocko - for the last time
you stay objective about Tebow, I’ll stay objective about NeckB – this infighting is ridiculous, myself included. We are Broncos fans, not Orton/Tebow fans and frankly, there are bigger fish to fry like getting a competent GM.
Rocko
There has been so much negative touting as well. I think it would be just as fair to say that most non-Bronco fans have been swayed into an unrealistically negative view of Tebow’s potential.
Without Tebow taking reps and playing during a significant time in some games, the decision seems to be made by many by starting with the question “Do you like Tebow/Florida or not”, and then looking down a pick-list under the heading they chose to list reasons to back it up. Myself, I have seen many QBs in the 70s and 80s with “poor” passing mechanics, but I have never seen so much made of analyzing it.
no doubt
some people are so unwilling to see the potential that is there because of their worship for an above average QB? it makes no sense to me.
I form my own opinions on players
and try not to get too caught up in the MSM’s analysis, because more times than not – they’re way off. I’ve seen enough of Tebow to realize he has potential that Kyle could only dream of.
Speaking of the 70s, Tebow is the spitting image of Bobby Douglas!
Big, strong, fast lefty…but couldn’t cut it on the passing/intelligence skills. A new HC has been picked and he has spoken. Kyle Orton is the starting Qb for the Broncos. It’s time to rally behing our new HC and support KO.
I agree
but he also said, and I quote “Tim Tebow is an INTEGRAL part of our team.” We should stand by Kyle, but at the same time look towards the future. I believe we will see Tebow integrated into the offense more and more, within the coming weeks. Whatever happens next year, happens – I just want to win behind whoever is taking snaps behind center.
Tebow resembles Tebow and Orton resembles Orton, plain and simple. Don’t be a hypocrite.
Orton, Tebow, Quinn, who cares as long as the Broncos win.
I don't get you man
do you enjoy putting burrs up people’s hind ends? Every post I see, you have to knock Tebow in some way. Your agenda is so obvious, many people are going to stop taking you serious (I already have). This post was about the overall roster and you singled Tebow out. Grow up, stop playing Madden so much, and go route for Purdue since you have no interest in your future QB.
Have you watched Orton the last 3-4 games
Yes he has put up good number in most of them but he is just as much the reason we lost those games as anyone else. The KC game can be blamed all on him. He could hit a wide open WR all game. People hated the playcalling but your dear old Orton checked out of a running play to a pass play at least 5 times. He also has been HORRIBLE on 3rd downs and thats what a QB gets paid to convert.

Jason Cole is a tool
He hated McD and Tebow from the start

agreed
he was one of many. Had Belichick drafted Tebow, the whole MSM would proclaiming the brilliance of it all, and in return worshipping Tebow.
