I've made it known here that my favorite HC prospect is current DC of the Browns Rob Ryan. If you didn't know, he's the twin brother of Rex Ryan of the Jets, and like him is pretty loud and flamboyant. Although I don't like his brother's smack talk, there's no denying how much better the Jets are with him and how much his players love him. But this post isn't about Rex. I want to show you why Rob Ryan should be the Broncos HC in 2011
Being a DC, Rob's resume should be heavily based on the unit he coaches. Currently the Browns D is ranked 22nd in yards/game, which really worries me and should worry the Broncos. However, as Kyle Orton shows us time and time again, a lot of yards do not win games. Where we should focus our attention, therefore, is points/game. As of now, the Browns are averaging 19.9 a game, which in today's high scoring NFL is pretty good. Anything under 20 is usually a good D. Also, looking at the other D's, the Browns D has let up only 2 more then the teams currently tied for 9th in this category, so there could be an argument that they should be top 10 in this category.
Also, looking at the Browns D, besides the numbers the name recognition and overall talent level on that side of the ball is not too impressive. D'Qwell Jackson who is probably their best defender, has been out the whole year. Shaun Rogers has also been hurt as well. The rest of that D to me seems to be a bunch of role players, although Browns fans may be best served telling us whether this is true or not. Still, there's no denying though that their D is playing much better then their talent level suggests, and the credit for that should be given to Rob.
The one downside to him is like his brother he can make an ass out of himself in front of the media. However, the media tends to love this kind of stuff and although I dont want a coach to be hired to appease the media, it woud be nice to have the local media and MSM not bashing our coach every step of the way.
I like the mentality he brings. Its been too long since Denver has had a D that OC's arent licking their chops over playing. If he can make our team tougher, like his brother and what he's been doing in Cleveland, I think we would see immediate improvement. I, and I know many of you as well, hate seeing our team get pushed around. I truly believe a guy like Rob would refuse to let that happen on a consistent basis.
I realize that HC is just one of our holes, and bringing in a guy like Rob would certainly require more personnel duties put on Xanders or another GM, but thats what I want to see happen. As a darkhorse candidate, it would probably make his hiring much easier by making him cheaper for a year where we gotta pay 3 coaches. I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of having O gurus as coach neglect our D. Its time to bring a guy like Rob who will vastly improve our D and bring in a guy loved by those who play for him. Also, it's quite clear that the base of our O is pretty good, or at least has the potential to be. By bringing in a DC, we can pretty mcuh guaruntee that our O will stay mostly intact, something that should've happened after the 08 season (although I must admit I like this O better then that one).
Rob comes from a great pedigree, and unlike McD has been around many teams, has seen success and failure, and probably knows that there is more then one way to skin a cat (McD clearly didn't know this). Put me down as a Rob Ryan supporter for HC 2011, are you guys down for this as well?
