The Denver Broncos on Tuesday signed linebacker Lee Robinson from their practice squad and acquired free-agent tight end Daniel Coats, it was announced.
Robinson (6-foot-2, 256 pounds) is a first-year player who spent the last eight weeks of the season on Denver’s practice squad after seeing time on the practice squads of Arizona and Tampa Bay in 2009. He was originally signed by the Broncos as a college free agent from Alcorn State University last season.
He totaled 334 tackles (193 solo), 18.5 sacks (112 yds.), three interceptions (66 yds.), 11 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 43 career games played at Alcorn State.
Selected to play in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Game following his senior year at Amite County High School in Liberty, Miss., he was born on April 23, 1987.
Coats (6-foot-3, 264 pounds) is a fourth-year player who has played in 53 career games (18 starts) with Cincinnati, totaling 30 receptions for 291 yards (9.7 avg.). He also appeared in one postseason contest with the Bengals. He entered the NFL with Cincinnati as an undrafted college free agent from Brigham Young University in 2007.
He played in 46 of a possible 48 games at BYU and totaled 86 receptions for 966 yards (11.2 avg.) with nine touchdowns. Named the player of the year in the state of Utah following his junior season at Northridge High School in Layton, Utah, he was born on April 16, 1984.

What? Football news? ;-)
PS: I really like Robinson’s potential so I like this move even if bummed it came because of Mays’ injury.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
I have been a big fan of Robinson for awhile
I wanted them to draft him out of college. He is fast, good in coverage and in run support. Love the move!! Great start for the new era
My job is to separate the player from the ball - John Lynch
Because he didn't play in the NFL last year
My projections Denver 11-5, San Diego 10-6, Oakland 9-7, Kansas City 7-9
Revised after 9 games. Denver 8-8, San Diego 8-8, Oakland 8-8, Kansas City 8-8

and that makes him technically not a rookie
that’s the difference.

Well not really
A player has to be on the team or IR for six games or more in order to earn an accrued season. He could have played on the team for 5 games, and be on the PS for the rest his rookie year. And would still be considered a first year player in his second year playing pro ball
I meant that he is not listed as a rookie
The label isn’t because of the pension status. Years in the league and accrued years can differ.

He is purely a blocking specialist and special teamer.

WoW! really??
from BYU???? I am totaly shocked here. Thought sure I remembered him catching many passes for the Cougars.
You did, especially in his freshman season. He owns a few freshman TE records for BYU, including number of receptions. In high school and college he showed excellent hands, but what I’ve seen of him so far in the NFL (which isn’t much, granted) his hands have not been good at this level.
He doesn’t have elite speed, but it’s not bad either. On the other hand, he is agile and quick. He is a beast physically: he out-benched most of the o-linemen at the Combine when he attended.
He was utilized by Cincinnati as both a TE and a FB.

Beat me to it.
He has had good hands in college, but they didn’t have to be great in college.
He is a VERY good blocker however. It will be interesting to see how we use him…
WHAT?
they are still playing football?
I'm betting Marshall is sitting in Miami thinking "That could have been me." Instead, Tyler Thigpen is throwing him passes. - Nick Cast

I’m excited to see Robinson play, if he gets much time. And I’d like to see what any TE can do, seems like a big weakness on this team.
Staring at the Sun
Well it may not matter in the next regime
But in the spread formation, DeMaryius Thomas could play at the TE spot. Meaning the big guy over the middle or splitting the seam on a skinny post. He is big enough to block at that spot if there was a check to the run too.

so is Decker for that matter
Witness his seam catch against KC.
