I believe we are confronting what has been an unspoken, but monumental, reason why the great receiver has long been uncomfortable playing in Denver.

I think many of us have thought this for awhile. Javon Walker struggled with it, and Brandon Marshall is struggling with it as well...

This does make a lot of sense.

I honestly never thought of this when wondering what was going on in this whole Brandon Marshall stitation recently. These next few weeks and months will tell the tale as Marshall has to relive that horrific moment.

I have never been in a moment like that so I can’t even fathom what he went through. However if you are’t able to publicly talk about it then there has to be issuses still there. I hope he can get through them.

Javon Walker is a dope head.

I don’t believe Marshall is. Marshall has had his issues way before Darrent Williams got killed and to say that he now wants out of Denver when he said flat out a couple of weeks ago he wanted to play in Denver. I’m confused. Maybe the team should buy him some couch time.

the quote about him wanting out was long ago not recently.

by hallandnash on Feb 22, 2010 9:27 AM MST up reply actions

That definitely makes sense.

I never thought about it that way, but it all fits. When he said, “I hate this (bleep) city” after he got pulled over, he was voicing that he hates the constant reminder of DWill, not the city, itself. That makes sense.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

You know,

I agree that in light of Marshall’s experiences this is a reasonable justification for his antics. Now that Marshall was involved, he will always have to look over his shoulder, as BFIP said. It’s too late for him to get completely out. I think this is a satisfactory justification to the “I hate Denver” comments.

I don’t know how this gang stuff operates, but logic tells me that staying out of seedy places and away from seedy people lowers the risk of getting tangled up with something like this. I know it’s probably too late for Marshall, but isn’t it reasonable to think that some of the Broncos there that night were involved in some less than appropriate activities? I have not read avidly about the Williams case, so someone correct my misinformation if there is any.

My hope going forward is that McDaniels’ penchant for hiring quality character guys will mean that we don’t have a group that feels comfortable in a gangland situation, and wouldn’t put themselves there, or get themselves involved.

I was wondering when someone would bring this up.

I remember that article. I also heard that Brandon was the instigator in this whole affair. He was mouthing off, or responding to others that led to the altercations at the club they were at.

Spraying champagne, and talking trash to badniks

is not enough of a reason for Darrent Williams to be dead now. D Will was trying to get away from a different life in Ft Worth, which included getting away from these people. Let’s also not forget that some gangbangers put hits out on celebrities just for the sake of saying they shot someone famous.

Also

By all accounts I’ve read, D-Will was actually trying to be the peacemaker. He was breaking up the mini-scuffle or smack talking, and he then had a role in convincing his teammates it was time to leave so as not to be in a bad situation. Obviously, we don’t want to see anyone hurt or killed, but it hurts more to know it was one of the ‘good guys’ who was trying to take care of his teammates. Still sucks, years later…

I've brought this up several times....

And several in here claiming it was a low blow! I’m just saying that while I think he feels comfortable playing here…..he knows, and has known that this trial is going to illuminate facts around this issue. When it does, a lot more info/facts will come out and it won’t be favorable for BM! I think we’ll find out that he is who we thought he was! Look at whatcthe incident did to Javon Walker? The fur will start flying shortly and I’ll bet somethin about marshall’s role was a contributing factor to the final outcome. Any takers?

I believe BM was a gangbanget himself?

Even if the Broncos didn't start it the altercation,

I have a hard time believeing JW and BM kept their big mouths shut, especially a very very young BM, ya right. Having a friend murdered is one thing, and is a terrible thing to go through, but I think it’s obvious there’s GUILT involved here. SHould have let your body guards do the talking idiot. Does he not think this can happen in any city, or is Denver that bad. I’m tired of this. Give us our 1st and 3rd and get out. Bad things happen at 2 oclock in the morning, especially when your fake gansta mouthing off cause you dont think anything REAL is going to happen. Guess what? It did.

Spraying champagne on New Years Eve and getting into arguments are not sins.

I’m not saying that everything Marshall did was appropriate (how would we know anyway), but lets not start blaming him for the aggressive violent actions of gang members. Doing so simply justifies the gang’s existence and actions both of which are unjustifiable.

I'm with you.

As I said, previously, I hope he gets some kind of closure out of this. While spraying champagne on people might be childish behavior, it certainly doesn’t warrant such a reaction as murder.

I wonder how much credence should be given to Brandon looking over his shoulder, either. He spent a lot of time at Reverend Kelly’s mission, which is, if I’m not mistaken, right there in five points. I commend him for the attention he gave those kids, while probably putting himself at risk by his presence.

While I don’t condone a lot of his behavior – he’s certainly not a saint, by any means – the giving of his time does say something of his character. Time is a much more precious gift than money, and goes farther to reach and affect young people

Marshall is something of a dichotomy

I don’t remember ever reading he was involved in gangs himself, but I know he has spoken of the ‘bad environment’ in which he grew up. I’ve read quite a bit about the night D-Will was killed. The way it sounds, Marshall and his cousin were spraying champagne and generally being pains in the ass. The gang members took offense, and the smack talking started. It got more and more heated, and Marshall and his cousin felt the need to stay in the faces of the other parties. D-Will (and someone else?) stepped in and told Marshall to STFU, and basically said it was stupid to get involved in an altercation. D-Will was instrumental in telling the Broncos that the situation was no good, and it was time to go. On the way out, Marshall and his cousin continued the back and forth with the thugs, and there ‘may have been’ some pushing and shoving outside. The parties left, and the shooting followed.

Marshall continued to have his problems, lapses in judgment, bouts of idiocy, whatever you want to call it, for years after that. I kept finding myself wishing the D-Will incident would have been enough to ‘scare him straight,’ but I was afraid we were constantly waiting for the next incident.

BUT, then you see his involvement with Reverand Kelly. You see how he “adopted” his teenage cousin, to get him out of the same “bad environment” in which Beast grew up. And in those moments I find myself thinking, “This young man is turning a corner.” I hope with all my heart that he manages to overcome whatever demons are haunting him, because I think there is a good man in there who could help other youngsters overcome the things with which he is struggling.

And for my armchair psychology….whatever else is haunting him, it seems pretty clear that Beast has some severe impulse control problems. Regardless of what happens with football, with where he ends up, I hope he gets his mind and his life figured out, and that he uses his experiences to help other youngsters. And I really hope the cowards who murdered D-Will get what they deserve…..

I’ve thought this and commented it for a long time. There is no doubt in my mind that the DWill situation plays a major part in not only his apparent desire to get out of Denver, but it also goes a long way in reading into his off-field transgressions, most of which were in the off season that followed the incident.

by ButteBronco on Feb 21, 2010 11:51 AM MST reply actions

Sure guy, Marshall is a saint and didn't have anything to do with it. He smells like guilt,

all the way from over here in San Diego…….you’re right, I don’t know this as fact, and no one deserves their life being taken away. But in today’s world, certain actions ( as lame as they might be) bring serious ramifications. My main point with Marshall is if he doesn’t like Denver it’s because of this or that, always something new. Over it. Get out.

by bronco112 on Feb 21, 2010 11:52 AM MST reply actions

I'm not saying his actions had nothing to do with it,

or that they were smart actions. I’m not even saying that I am in favor of him staying (I can’t make my mind up). What I am saying is that his actions that night do not inform my opinion of whether or not I want him to stay. I’m also not saying that actions don’t bring about reactions (that would be a pretty dumb thing for me to say), but rather that not all reactions are appropriate or predictable. If kids are horsing around after school and one of them runs into the street and gets hit by a speeding car, the kid made a dumb decision that led to their death, but it is still the fault of the speeding driver.

If, and its a big if, Marshall is trying to get away from Denver to get away from his guilt or fear, then I hope he seeks mental help (if he hasn’t already) before trying to simply run away. For his sake.

This doesn't make sense to me

If Marshall wanted out of Denver because of what happened with Williams, if he felt his life was in danger, why wouldn’t he just go to Bowlen and say “Mr B, I just cannot deal with being here in Denver anymore because of what happened with Darrent Williams. Is there any possibility of a trade?”

I think this is just Klis stirring the pot as he always does….

Your point makes some sense.

As I stated above, he spent a great deal of time at Reverend Kelly’s mission. That doen’t fit with him being afraid. He may, however, still harbor some guilt from the incident. Even if there’s no guilt on his concience, such a thing can damage someone emotionally, and a geographic cure might sound reasonable.

I would think that Bowlen would have agreed to a trade

if he was that miserable considering the extenuating circumstances.

As far as Marshall’s remarks when he got the DUI, that was not that long after the incident and who’s to say none or all of us wouldn’t have said the same thing about wanting out of bad situation. Perhaps BM has received counseling in that time, but just chooses to not discuss it publicly and has made peace with everything as much as he can and might want to stay here now.

I agree

I feel that Klis is just trying to get some writing in while times are slow. It may play a part in Marshall wanting to leave or acting out, but I would think it is just a part of many things that have caused Marshall consternation while being a Denver Bronco, unfortunately most of his discontent has come at the hands of his own poor decision making.

by broncos314 on Feb 21, 2010 12:34 PM MST reply actions

I have no doubt that he is carrying a lot of guilt

And it’s understandable. When you’re around gang members, you don’t spray patrons of a club (which may have included some of the gang people) with champagne and you don’t get in arguments. It is NOT an excuse for the gang member’s actions which are vile, but it was foolish at best.

But, I do note that Klis doesn’t base this on anything but a, “You know, I’ll bet that…” If he did, this would be a very different story.

Well, as a really emotional cat, I can relate to Marshall's thoughts and feelings in a sense.

I mean, I’ve never been a witness to a close friend dying like this, but I’ve been in traumatic situations before and it’s hard to move on and be happy without some kind of closure. I completely understand where he is coming from, if this is the case. Hopefully this trial finally making progress will help BMarsh find peace within himself and with the world around him. He seems like a very smart guy that has made stupid decisions. I think Marshall will stay here if he gets offered a good deal, but no amount of money can make the pain go away. I hope this trial gives him some kind of closure by finally facing the things that have plagued him for years. Maybe facing Williams’ alleged killer face to face in a controlled setting will help.

This is a bull crap theory

Look, I’m a compassionate person. I feel sorry for a lot of things, but this is not one of them. We should trade Marshall because he is guilty for being an idiot when he was a kid? If he can work out a trade for that bull crap, then Champ Bailey should do the same, because I guarantee you there weren’t more people affected by this whole ordeal outside of immediate family than Bailey and Shanahan. (Save for Javon Walker, who is a nut job)

Darrent Williams was a lot like Marshall, but he matured a lot faster. He was involved in the community greatly, had a family, and just so happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Brandon Marshall put himself in the wrong place. He let his arrogance and emotions get the better of him, and I do not feel sorry for that. He may carry bad memories and guilt, but does he think those memories and that guilt won’t follow him wherever he goes?

No matter if he is in Miami, Arizona, Baltimore, or wherever, he will NEVER not think about this, and he will never not look over his shoulder if that’s why he wants out of Denver. Marshall is a professional, and his closure is in the fact that Willie whatever is in custody. All Marshall has to do is keep his nose out of gang banger fights and putting himself out there in unnecessary ways.

I not only do not buy it, I would never even sell this theory.

Well, this part i agree with
It’s an understated, but not underrated, reason why Marshall would like to move on.

Understated because no one has written much about it. Not underrated because its overrated, which is why no one has written much about it.

I predict that B Marsh will stay and will make us proud. I’ll stake my miniscule, insignificant, overstated, not underrated reputation as a sports pundit on it.
