Team Needs: Let's Get on the Same Page
I'm loving all the mocks, and theoretical FA pickups. I think what would help us all in these to make them better is to outline our team needs, and see where we all feel our team needs lie. Here, I will give you my opinion on our needs, and I'm hoping we can agree/debate the needs. So without further delay:
2: C: Not as big as OG, but definitly can use an upgrade. In a league transitioning to 3-4 more and more every year, the need for a big, sturdy OC is on the rise. Wiegmann was great in 08, but hes shown he cant play at the same level as he did in 08. I wouldnt be too mad if we didnt upgrade this position this offseason, but I do think we should draft a guy for the future, or just pick up a guy in FA and go forward with him. Pouncey would be the best option, but as of now, our position in the draft leaves us likely to not get him.
3: DE: I think this group can be easily improved. They did admirably well, but I think an upgrade here would be preferable. McBean did good, but going forward I don't see him as the answer. Peterson should be upgraded, he can be a decent rotational guy, but I dont want him starting. Holliday was a good 3-4 DE on 3rd down, but he cant be an every down guy. I think Dwan Edwards from Balty would be good here, and there are a couple of guys with potential at this spot in the draft.
4: NT: I know people like Fields, but compared to most 3-4 NT's, he's pretty small (Ratliff dont count, hes not a double team type NT, more of a penetrator, which Fields is not). I think hes a solid guy who can compliment a better NT. Right now, FA doesnt really offer anyone worthy of an upgrade to Fields, unless somehow Wilfork and Hampton avoid the tags. I think in the draft our best option is Dan Williams. If we dont get him in the first, I would like to see us get either Cody or Thomas from UNC i the 2nd.
5: ILB: I think this is really where NEED stops, and upgrade begins. Davis and Woodyard were an OK tandem at the one ILB spot, but I think we can do better. DJ did a better job IMO at the other spot than we at MHR give him credit for. I want to see him with another year of Martindale (who I must say deserves a lot of praise for the job he did with our LBs) and I would like to see DJ with a better DL in front of him. I wouldnt be too opposed to McClain, but I feel we can find an adequate ILB deeper in the draft, as most teams do, and I feel we have more pressing needs for the 10th pick to address.
6: CB: Not a huge need, more so a guy or 2 for the future along with Phonz and Carter. This can be addressed much later in the draft or possibly a cheap guy in FA. No need to break the bank for this position or get caught up in a bidding war.
7: QB: I know most ppl will disagree, but I dont think Orton is the long term answer. I dont see anyone much more of an upgrade in FA, but I think if Clausen/Bradford fell to us at the 10th spot, or one of the QBs such as Skelton or Lefevour fell to us with good value, I dont think we shouldnt even hesitate to bring in our QB of the future.
I dont expect everyone to agree with me, I just want to see where we as a fanbase are on this issue.

No NT?
Not saying Fields is bad, but who would you blame our run D woes on, since that is one of our biggest needs, and that isnt addressed until your 4th need.

Meant to say Run D was a need to be improved

Then go ask Elvis to man up. He was a primary culprit in our running D woes. I thought our run D fell apart when our four LBs lost their gap control. Davis and DJ were getting lost or overrunning plays and Ayers, Haggen and Elvis failed to maintain the edge. I was like watching Winborn and Webster all over again.
I got a replacement for Peterson in my top 5 so I didn’t totally neglect the run D.

I thought Elvis held the edge well
against KC, but for the most part he didnt do to well there. I do think the DL got worn down and overwhelmed at the end of the year, and that all culminated in the KC loss

I can’t name one player on our D that did play well vs KC – including Elvis. That was a bad a loss as the Detroit game in 2007. It’s hard to watch the Broncos mail it in.
From my understanding of the 3-4, your DEs are not glory boys, but hard workers that free up the LBs to make plays.
LeKevin Smith was a big boy with a lot of size and he was the worst DE on the team. From what I saw, the LBs were the reason our run D fell apart because they stop making plays and starting making mistakes.
I’d love Denver to secure a star NT, but it’s not in my top five since we have some glaring holes elsewhere. NT is like CB, it’s a need, but not one that must be addres or we’re screwed. If we go into 2010 with Hoct at LG or no LB with coverage skills, we’re screwed.

I too see the need for a coverage LB. I know we both disagree, and thats fine. This was the point of the post, and I am curious to see what others think. Thanks for your opinion.
Although I will agree Hochstein cannot be our stating LG. And I think u r underrating DJ’s pass coverage skills. I remember against the Colts he was actually in man coverage on a slot guy, Garcon I believe, and broke up the pass. But yes, I do feel we could use another guy there as well.

McGeorge, I think you're spot on on this issue
I did a fan post a while back looking at the defensive unit’s performance between the 1st 8 games and the last 8 games. One of the things that I noticed was that the # of tackles made by the LB’s dropped signifcantly while those made by the DL rose. The secondary’s tackles remained relatively the same.
You quite rightly pointed out that the McDaniels defense is based on the DL’s tying up blockers to free up the LB’s to make the play. I also saw an interview with Mario Haggan in which he explained that his role was to maintain the end of the line and turn the play up inside.

NT is not in my top 5. Fields is decent. If you watched the Eagles game, you know our coverage of TEs is not. We don’t have even one LB on the team that can cover worth a darn.
With a very shallow class of FAs, if we find a way to address all five of my listed problems, I’ll be happy.

your right bout TE coverage
But that can also be attributed t scheme. Rarely, if ever, did we put a Safety on a TE. And in the Eagles game, the one big play Celek had was a breakdown in coverage. But yes, a pass coverage LB is important.

And we don’t have one on our roster – not one LB that I know of anyway. So I put that in my top 5.

Yes
I had one in my top 5. I dont feel a specialty player should be in our top 5 tho, which is why I put an ILB in general there

McClain in round 1. I’d love that.
San Diego Super Chokers – The annual preseason Champs, eternal post season chumps. Stay Classy
I wouldnt mind it
Yes, he’d be good. But for me I’d prefer us to trade back or take Dan Williams. Just me though.
And dont say thats a reach, because I have seen plenty of mocks where the Phins take him at 12, so I dont think it is too big of a reach
But yes, McClain would be good if he fell to 10/11, but everyday that seems less and less likely

I don't like drafting to fill a hole next year.....
Looking 3-5 years down the road, I think McClain is the obvious pick at 10/11 if he’s available. I think a stud NT would be a huge upgrade, but if we can find a guy who can be our ‘on-field coach’ for the next decade once Dawk leaves then I don’t think we can pass that up.
McClain's Pursuit
Is ungodly. He has a tremendous ability to read and react.
But doesn’t his tackling scare you a bit? When I watched his highlight video it seems like he makes mostly arm tackles and doesn’t square up and wrap.
I could be way off base, but I don’t believe that kind of tackling will transfer well into the NFL.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
He looks to tackle high...
But in my mind that would be an easy adjustment for a player to make. Maybe someone else could tell me I’m wrong.
And

If I Had To List Them...
Though I’m not all that comfortable with a mere list of needs, I’d say our top five are: C (1A), G (1B), DE (3), DT (a close 4) and RS (a more distant 5). I’ll explain my thinking for that in a full post soon enough and we can discuss my opinions there, but you asked for a list, so I left obliged!

Yea I agree with your list
I forgot RS, but your right it is important, and will free up Royal more for WR. And cant wait for that post

Haha thx Jeremy
For the most part, I think we at MHR r on the same page here, I just wanted to make sure with this fanpost.
Mine too!
I like the order of it and reasoning behind how to upgrade them. RS is a need as E.J. said. I could care less if Hochstein or LK Smith are back. I don’t like that we gave up picks for them though. Not sure we resign Holliday either. What I’m frustrated with on some mocks is the drafting a punter or big RB. Hillis and Jordan will stick around I think and that can be addressed next year. As for punter, we have 3 to choose from.
"Just trying to win a MF game."
Thx Digger
Hear you on Hochstein and LK. I thought the moves were good at first, as you cant really argue with the reasoning, but in retrospect not good.
And yes on the big back and punter as well
Variation
1 OC
2 NT
3 OG
4 ILB
5 OLB
IMO McD/XNs are trying to position to draft more with Best Available Player in mind than biggest need. Hypothetically, if McLain, Anthony Davis, and Sam Williams are all available at #10-11, and they have them ranked in this order, he’ll take McLain though they might see OC as a greater need.
I base this partially on the adding to the roster of Batiste, McChesney, Fry, Powell, Atkins, etc. They hope for the possibility of one or more rising in the depth chart.

I would like to add
we don’t really know what we have with Pedescleaux, Baker, Branson or Greisen either. Some may not make final roster and Greisen may not even get a new contract, but those are intangables that we are not privy to.
"Just trying to win a MF game."
I actually think OLB is a solid spot for us
I think we need to giv Ayers more time to develop, as ppl tend to forget he’s playing a position he’s never played at a level of competition hes never played. Doom just needs to work on run support, and I thought he sealed the edge well against KC. and Haggan I believe stepped up for the most part this year.
And yes, I hear you on BPA, and I think McX is closer to that than drafting for need. Not a huge fan of it, but if done effectivly can work very well.
Early in his college career, Ayers did play LB
He switched as he grew – sophomore year? Could even be frosh, but he commented in an interview on having played LB in the past. He commented that he had some coverage skills, and that was borne out this year
Don't say rebuild - say reload...
Looked it up on rivals
And your right Emmitt, thx for the heads up. I still think its a tough transistion, and ppl expected way too much from him
I would swap need #4 around
I think we still need another good CB( prefferably one taller than 6’). Unless he progresses a bunch, I think Phons will be a career nickelback. He & Carter are both pretty short. I don’t know about you, but if Champ, or Andre were to get injured, I would be pretty uncomfortable having one of these two be a full time replacement.
I’m not saying get rid of either of them. I think we need to carry 5 CB’s on the final 53 roster.
