Jaguars Win 10th Pick Coin Flip
The Broncos will officially be selecting 11th overall in April's draft, as the Jaguars have won the rights to the 10th overall pick. Jacksonville has previously stated they would be interested in trading down.

Blessing in disguise?
I don’t think this will be too bad. Certainly, it means that the Jags may take a guy that we wanted, but this draft is so deep that we aren’t going to be short on talent, at that spot. Plus, we will save about 2 million dollars. So, this isn’t something that should ruin your day or anything.
At least we didn’t win the coin toss and defer.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

LMAO
But if we did, wouldn’t that have given us an extra draft pick (like the extra possession in a game)?

Who cares...really....deep draft and we save $2000000 we can put into someone like Doom or Marshall....not seeing the downside really...
If there were only 10 good players in the draft, and we were 11th…fair enough….but its still a GREAT pick for us! If I had of told you we would get the 11th pick for Jay Cutler, plus other picks, plus Orton we would have all been stoked. Was not Chicago suppose to be in the Super Bowl this year?

I heard that we alternate picks,
so that means we get the 10th pick in the 2nd round. right?
If so, I think that works out great. That should mean we get pick #42. AND that means since the patriots have the Jags 2nd rd pick, they will pick behind us in their favorite round…HAHA!
I take enjoyment from small victories obviously.

Wrong.
That means Chicago gets the 10th pick in the 2nd round – which Chicago traded to Tampa Bay.
We had Chicago’s pick remember.

I don’t know about Denver, but my guess is a cash poor team like Jacksonville actually wanted to lose this coin toss.
I don’t think Jacksonville has the same needs as us so this probably doesn’t matter, but if they take Dez Bryant with the 10th pick… That would be GREAT.

Well, if they don't want it, they could trade back to 11 and give us the 10 pick and some other things.

I think the Jags are a very likely to seek an opportunity to trade down. But trading down is not as lucrative as it used to be.
Cleveland didn’t get much to move from #5 overall in the 2009 draft to #21. All they got were some marginal starters and middle round pick or two.
The Jets got their QB of the future.
Advantage = Jets.

Or the alternative is
they just dont go up for their draft pick. Nothing stopping them.

Agents hate that and it leads to holdouts and angry rookies.

Boo hoo
Didnt we have two first round hold outs this year that were drafted in their spot?
Agents will hold out rookies regardless. Signing players this year with no CBA could be a mess.

I'm hoping they are dumb enough to take Tebow with the #10 pick
He’s the savior of that franchise right? #10 isn’t too high for a savior! Come on JAX, take Tebow.

I think Tebow would be a smart pick for them at 10. He’d sell so many new seats, the ROI would be very good on that pick – at least for the 1st few seasons. If the NFL is a business, Tebow is a great pick for the Jags.
I live in Florida and Tebow is a freaking hero down here. I don’t get it myself, but he is massively popular.

I hope that's the way they see it as well
Hey, if Tebow fills their stadium and in turn keeps their franchise in Jacksonville I can understand them seeing that as worth the #10 pick. But if the goal is to pick the best player available to help them win football games, they would be better off hoping Tebow is still there when they pick in the 2nd rnd.

If they want him
That’s where they have to take him. The market for teams to trade up is not going to be high given the depth of this draft, though we can hold out hope. Jacksonville doesn’t have a 2nd round pick, and I doubt he falls to the third round. Thus, you have your 1st round pick. That’s IF they want him bad enough, but keep in mind they have a Pro Bowl QB in David Garrard, whether it be by default or not. They are lacking in the trenches similar to us talent wise, and they have a deficiency at cornerback and safety as well.

Would drafting Tebow as a backup QB really put butts in the seats?
I’m not sure it wouldn’t, just asking…

Great News
Recent history of drafting in the 11th spot has been very kind for Denver. Lets keep the streak alive.

Yeah, it was 11. For some reason, Cutler just seemed like a 12 pick in my gut.

Still mad
that we don’t have the 11th AND 14th pick in the 1st round like we should have if McDaniels and Xanders hadn’t foolishly traded it for Alphonso Smith. I hated the trade on draft day last year and I hate it even more now since Smith has been a total bust so far and we would have a lot more flexibility with 2 top 14 first round picks. For example, we could have kept one of the picks and then traded down with the other for extra picks or even traded one of them for a future 1st rounder next year to have a better shot of one of the 1st round quarterbacks next year. If McDaniels and Xanders are going to be with Broncos for several years they need to manage the draft a lot better than they did last year. If they can’t then Mr. Bowlen will have to clean house again in about 2 more years. I need to let this matter go but I can’t because it was such a bone headed move and my blood pressure probably is rising so I will stop now and go take my BP medicine and hopefully McDaniels and Xanders will make up for it in this year’s draft and free agency.
Four 1st round picks in two years
Would have a been a heavy financial burden. Now I don’t have a problem trading our first for a second, just wish we would have drafted more of an impact player there.

Me either.
And Phonzy still could be an impact. What it really was is having him for a year in our system free. We used this year’s 1st round pick on him. If he produces like a #14 draft pick this year we got a good deal.
For Cutler we got Orton, Ayers, whoever we get at #11 and the value it took to jump up in front of NE to get Quinn. Jury will always be out on that one too. Another ? is losing this year’s 5th to move up for Brandstater and now not all fans think he’s even ready to be 2nd string. Instead the Tebow watch has begun, WTF?
Before throwing Smith completely under the bus
(and I’m in the “the jury is still out” camp on him) it’s helpful to remember that Smith only played on 15% of the non-special teams defensive snaps in 2009. Kinda hard to establish yourself when you’re in essence playing approximately 1.5 plays out of every 10. He was also in the position of playing behind Bailey and Goodman, one of the arguably better CB tandems in the league.
He also missed one game (the Dallas game), I believe it was due to an ankle injury. And he admitted in an interview that the NFL game was much faster than he expected.
It could well be that we’ll see him step it up this next year.

His admission that the NFL was faster than he expected is the very reason I don’t think he’ll pan out.
Sometimes people reach a level one notch above their competency. Smith played a ton of ball at Wake Forrest so the transition should have been smoother for him than any of our other rookies since he was an older (24) and more experienced player than most NFL rookies. In fact, Smith is one year older than Cromartie-Rodgers, a 2nd year CB for the Cards.
When I watched Smith, it didn’t look like he was lost or confused the way Ayers often did. Smith just looked slow and lacking quickness or burst. More experience won’t help him here, just better genetics.

And if Alphonso Smith was a rookie beast you'd be calling McDaniels and Xanders draft geniuses.
They can’t possibly know for sure how successful even a top ten draft pick will be in the NFL. Especially in his rookie year. It’s a guessing game, is always a gamble, and McDaniels and Xander may have lost on this one. It doesn’t mean they can’t manage a draft.
I think thats the problem Brian
Smith only played on 15% of the non-special teams defensive snaps in 2009
Fans expected to at least seem him lock down the 3rd CB spot. Falling behind an undrafted free agent and a midseason veteran pickup probably wasnt what anyone had in mind including the coaching staff.
I’m in same camp as you (jury is still out) but we have to see more out of him this year.
You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?

We were lucky
Champ and Goodman stayed healthy and Smith was not forced to play more. What I do think could be said is he did not do well as a nickle back. As a backup CB, who knows. All I can say is I don’t know why people have us going CB in the top 3 rounds this year when our backup is already here.
Because we may need a starting caliber CB in 2011 if Champ is not retained.
Don’t want that to be Smith if Smith is not good enough to handle the job. If we don’t take a rookie CB in 2010, we may have to start a rookie CB in 2011 or overpay for a FA since we’d be desperate. Not very attractive options are they.
If everyone at MHR was okay with McDaniels thinking ahead with the Quinn TE pick in 2009, I don’t see why the thought wouldn’t cross our minds in 2010 at the CB position.

.. if they jumped into the 10 spot and took McClain .. With Jags looking to trade 10 it is likely to happen as well. :-(
I agree CompUser
that draft picks are hard to evaluate but it doesn’t make good football sense to trade what most of us thought would be a top 10 1st round pick (it turned out to be the 14th pick) for a 2nd round pick in Smith who was beat out by Carter and Law. Another part of the trade I hated was that the Broncos probably didn’t even have to make the trade to get Smith because he would probably have been available with our own original 2nd round pick. Last year’s draft as a whole has been a big disappointment to me so far and I would give it a grade of D right now but hopefully Moreno, Ayers, Smith, Quinn , etc. will start making it look a lot better next season than it does now but right now last year’s draft looks awful. Drafting good players is the best way to build a team and I hope McDaniels and Xanders turn out to be great drafters but their picks last year and the trades they made with draft picks last year have left me questioning their ability in this area but I hope I will be happy with their draft moves this year.
