The one QB to throw might be a good Future Option
I know he's not the only one throwing, but I think Jevan Snead, Ole Miss, has the potential to be a very good future prospect. The guy has the arm, and he's had some success, but he is very inconsistent. I think that if McD is looking for a project, this guy may be it.
The kid came into this year with a lot of hype. Many said he would be a first round pick easy, and he might even be a Heisman candidate. He had a great 08 year, with 26 Td's to 13 ints, and almost 3000 yds. However, in 09, he wasnt all that bad, but he suffered some pretty horrid games, namely the South Carolina game (viewer disgretion is advised for that game, it could cause nausea and many other ailments). The bigger the game was, the worse he seemed. However, the kid has all the intangibles and has shown he can get it done. He's got good size at 6'3, one hell of an arm, and he has decent mobility with a low 4.7 40. I think he has the tools to get it done, and McD, one of the best QB gurus in the league, can put it all together. cbssports has him rated as a 4th rounder. I feel if he falls to us there, and we havent taken a QB yet, we should be all over it. What say you?

Sorry...but this kid STINKs
He was the product of a potent Ole Miss offense year before last. This year he was horrible. If it was for Dexter McCluster, He would of looked worse than he did this year. I hate to sound so negative but if we can wait a year, we should start looking @ Ryan Mallet from Ark. The kid is 6’6, goes about 250. Has great NFL potential…look out for him, he’s coming this year. Im guess he’ll be on every early Heisman watch list.

What are you talking about ? Snead has no intangibles, he couldn’t read a defense to save a life

What I'm talkin bout is
Yes, he has intangibles. He played against SEC D’s this yr and last yr, and this year overall wasnt that bad. 20 Td’s to 20 Ints is bad, but I’ve seen worse. Ryan Mallet’s good, but if he can back up the 09 campaign with a similar 10 campaign, he’ll prob be top 5. I feel if Snead falls to us with good value ie: 5th or later, we should jump all over him
But
I don’t think you can say he has “all” the intangibles, then point out that he seems to play worse and worse the bigger the game is. One of the most important intangibles is the ability to step up performance in big situations…

true, fair enough
I just think the right coach can bring out the 08 year in him, and I think McD can be that guy. Snead probably should hav stayed at school for his senior year, but this is one of the last rookie uncapped years so I dont blame him
Agreed
Hard to blame someone for coming out this year. And I have to confess, I’ve read about Snead, but I’ve never seen a single snap of his. I will defer to you as far as his strengths and weaknesses…

I'm not really looking for a 'value' QB....
I think we have that in Orton and Tommy B…
Give me a QB with our first pick or stand pat with what we have. (maybe pick up a Pennington or such in FA)

THIS
If there is a ‘once in a generation’ talent on the table when we pick, I have no problem with the team picking a QB in the 1st. After that, I’m not big on trying to find a late-round ‘diamond in the rough’ just for its own sake. I guess I am an Orton homer, but if he deserves a 2nd year in the system to prove himself, I’d say Tommy B deserves a 2nd year in the system as well. I wouldn’t be opposed to a veteran backup NOT named Simms.
On that note, one name I have not seen thrown around much is David Carr. I think the beating he took in Houston took a toll on him, but he still has the physical talent and I believe he’s an UFA. Would McD be able to turn him into a good backup, or is it not worth the time/effort?

He's a former top pick.....
and I don’t think HOU had the team for him to grow, he might be worth looking at. Or I’d prefer to see him rather than throwing valuable draft picks at a longshot QB who likely will never see the field.
This doesn't make you a homer
I guess I am an Orton homer
Nah. Or, yes, of course, but not for what you said. Orton is getting another year, minimum, in this system. Tom B came onto the team marked “Requires Training and Time”. That’s where we are, with the exception of the Simms situation. I’m honestly surprised that he’s still there, even though it’s early.
With a QB who needs to improve playing and one who needs development sitting, the need for a vet backup QB is just common sense. If they take a 4th QB this draft, no one has shown them what they need to see to commit to him long term. That wouldn’t surprise me, but the other needs we have now, and a mildly shortened draft, make it good business to use the picks for other things unless they see exactly what they are looking for in a prospect..

I agree wholeheartedly
I value your opinions Emmett, so what do you think of Carr? Worth the trouble, or is there another vet (not including Simms) who you would rather see as our backup?

To be honest, I'm not there yet
Certainly Carr’s name has come up in the past. One of my concerns with him is that he hasn’t had a single winning year in the pros, and it’s just too easy for that to affect performance. Conversely – that IS a performance, and it doesn’t grab me. I recognize taht it isn’t his fault that HOU grabbed him before they had developed, but he went 1.3 in CAR in 2007 and didn’t get on the field for the Giants for a full game in two years, so we can’t judge much.
If he is going to be considered, I’d expect him to get a long, thorough workout before they’d pull the trigger. What’s in his favor is that he’s got a completion percentage in the 60’s career, but if you look at each year, it’s not that good. He’s below 60 in 3 years and is at 60.5 in another. His good years were topped with 2006 in HOU at 68+, but that’s just one year, even though it was his last in fulltime work.
You’re not going to get a fine starter at backup, and he might work out. My concern is that there is no recent tape other than a few throws a year for NYG over the past two. That’s why I’m open, but pretty warry, I’m sure that McD and Mike McCopy can learn more in 20 minutes that I can in a week of watching film. I will say that I’m in favor of cutting Simms loose – I’m not there, but it seems to me that he’s lost what he had, and he was inconsistent throughout his career. I don’t think that Denver will cut him until they are happy with someone else, and probably after the draft just for camouflage if nothing else, but I don’t see him making the end of TC, if even that.

Comment on Snead by Clark Judge (FWIW)

Good article
Pretty harsh, yet true. I feel he’s high risk, and high reward. The guy has the talent to be the best, or at least one of, but he needs to do everything Jamarcus Russell did, but the opposite.
I agree 1414
and I posted a few weeks ago that I would like for the Broncos to take Snead in the 3rd or 4th round if they don’t pick a qb before that. I am a Mississippi State graduate and fan so I hate Ole Miss but I like Snead and some team is going to get a steal. He has the total package but he has to learn not to force the ball so much. He played like a high 1st round pick in 2008 and I think he can return to that form if he goes to the right coaching staff.
He lacks passer instincts.
Stares down the receiver and has poor accuracy. He wouldn’t be a good fit. There are others and I believe McD will target one of them maybe in the 5-7th rd.
