Why would Denver want Ben Watson?
The issue of Sportingnews magazine lists the UFA and what teams ARE interested
in each player. I highlight ARE because nowhere has there been any information about the Broncos wanting Ben Watson of NE.
Watson and Daniel Graham are identical.Watson:6-3/255 29years old Graham: 6-3/257 31 years old. Combine note on both “a solid pass catcher who is a very good run blocker which is hard to find in the NFL”
Now is it that Watson is in NE and EVERYONE thinks that Denver only picks up FA from NE? Probably.
I do not see Denver even talking to Watson unless they plan on moving Graham.

There are two whom I think might fit.
Rex Hadnot OG Browns and Dwan Edwards DE Ravens.

What do you think about Stephen Neal?
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

You may be onto something. Graham comes with a high price, $6M per year over the course of his contract; due $4M in each of the next two years. Might be able to save some money with Watson.

My thoughts on Watson.
First of all, let me start by saying that I think Watson is a beast of a player. He is a mismatch for almost every LB in the League, and many safeties. (Isn’t he the guy that ran down Champ Bailey in the playoffs after an INT? If I’m wrong, I’ll feel silly).
However, while I recognize that Watson is a NE product, I don’t think he’ll match the profile of what McDaniels is bringing to Denver. Graham may be good receiver, but blocking is his real strength. Watson may be a decent blocker, but receiving is his real strength.
I think McDaniels would bring in Watson to build the team more towards the NE “way of thinking” in terms of team work and atmosphere. However, in the end, I don’t think McDaniels brings in Watson. I really think McD wants TEs that can block first, catch second. (As much as I like Watson though, I’d be glad to be wrong).

Watson ran down Champ...
I could see him going after Watson.
Hes as quick as Sheffler, has better hands and is a BETTER blocker…I would even say a VERY GOOD blocker.
Putting him in 3 TE sets with DG and Quinn…well, thats a handful right there…and he is much better in run game than Sheffler ever will be.
I like his fit for Denver!

All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

I would take him.
Does anyone know if Matt Spaeth is a FA? I would love to get that guy. I think he is very underrated.
I'll be stunned if Denver doesn't make a move for Watson.

I say that:
Denver picks up FA’s from NE because they actually know how to draft solid players at the skill positions.
I like the “double-duty” tight ends. When they’re on the field you never know what to expect. The one play that all your recievers are covered and the safties bite on the play action… that’s the play that you hit a TE like Graham and Watson on a screen or seam route. Bingo. Gotta love’em!

Watson is not a blocker
The reason Graham wanted out of New England is because is was type-cast as the blocking TE in NE. He came to Denver, getting paid receiving TE money.
He does know the offense, but I can’t see the Broncos paying two TE’s receiving money and Graham’s value as a blocker makes him the better player to keep.

I'm not a fan of Watson... at all
I don’t see him improving that position at all.

The reason
I had Watson in my mock is only because I thought Scheff was gone for sure. Now it’s sounding as if that is not for sure. If he is we need to replace him. Watson is one who we would be able to get in FA instead of the draft. There will not be many FAs to choose from. NE will be letting some get out because they have a lot of draft picks. I’m sure we will get some of them, just a question of how many.
let me see...
a 3-te set of graham, watson, and scheff/quinn/branson could be very interesting to me. who needs marshall? a decent deep-threat outta do it, and marshall isn’t it. royal, gaffney, and co. will be fine, we can run the ball better, and it saves money. we drafted a receiver last year, too. i’m all for it, come to think of it, especially if we lose scheff. whatever we need to do to run the ball, move the chains, and win the mf game, as it were.
taste my blitzkrieg!
sign doom now
Not sure we can count on Branson much
and I’m pretty sure Scheff will be signed to a low enough tender to lure teams to come get him. Graham, Watson and Quinn sound good to me. Much better than another draft pick.
