Horse Tracks - 2/27/10 - Combine Continues

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning Broncos Country!  I will have much more on the Darrent Williams' Murder Trial, so those links are left out.  Speaking specifically about football, the NFL Combine continues, with the list of players NOT working out grows each day.  Already we know that Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and Dan LeFevour won't workout on the QB side, and now comes news that a hamstring injury will keep WR Dez Bryant from working out.  Bryant has been tied to the Broncos in several mock drafts and is considered by many to be the best WR prospect in the Draft.

Shanahan says he left Broncos in good shape - The Denver Post
Speaking at the NFL scouting combine here Friday as the new head coach of Washington Redskins, Shanahan didn't want to dwell on the moment Broncos owner Pat Bowlen called him into the office 14 months ago to fire him.

When Highlands Ranch's Cole Pemberton asked his coach at Colorado State, longtime NFL assistant Steve Fairchild, what it would take to be a successful pro, the answer was pretty clear.

After the sun made an appearance on Friday, the snow, cold and clouds have returned to Indianapolis for combine day three. Health of Gronkowski, Gresham takes center stage | National Football Post
A look at some key points to come out of the NFL Combine after day one:

Hampton deal is a win for the Steelers | National Football Post
The Steelers appear to have gotten a bargain Thursday with the signing of nose tackle Casey Hampton. While the Packers, Patriots and 49ers are -- at least for the moment -- going year to year with their beefy defensive tackles, using the franchise tag to lock in one-year, $7-million deals with Ryan Pickett, Vince Wilfork and Aubrayo Franklin, respectively, the Steelers have taken a different route, probably due to their ability to forge a favorable agreement.

40 time will be big for Notre Dame's Tate | National Football Post
One of the more intriguing 40-yard dash times that we need to pay attention to when it comes to rookie prospects at the Combine is Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate.

Rams deal is critical to the NFL | National Football Post
The success of the agreed upon deal to sell controlling interest of the St. Louis Rams to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan is going to be a leading indicator of the relative financial health of NFL franchises and a barometer of the future health of the league as a whole as it heads into a year of labor strife. The deal, which will not be formally presented to ownership until the owners’ meetings in late March, will clearly be the second biggest business issue, after the state of labor relations themselves.

Biggs: Chicago WR Bennett has knee surgery | National Football Post
Earl Bennett has talked about being excited to dive into the new playbook belonging to offensive coordinator Mike Martz, but the Chicago Bears wide receiver might need a little bit of time to put what he finds inside the thick binder to use on the field.

NYC super bowl

sounds cool, if the NFL doesn’t mind the risk of a Super Bowl turning into a snow ball.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants country, and damned proud of it.

I would LOVE to see another snowy SB

That’s how they should ALL be played, imho.

I'd also love to see a Superbowl in New York.

Just for the precident it would set for playing the game in a “cold-weather” stadium. Maybe then we could see a Superbowl in Denver some year.

“I left the program in pretty good shape,” Shanahan said.

It would be a little too easy to point to this comment and say something snarky about the defense, but I still love me some Shanny and can’t deny that he provided a great deal of stability for our beloved franchise through the years. The 24-24 record over the past three years represents the downside of that stability. But it’s not like he left us with an unsalvageable mess that had to be completely blown up and reassembled. Pat could have easily replaced him with a guy who could have tinkered with the D and left the O alone, and I credit him for making the more difficult decision of hiring someone to reengineer the team completely. The fact that Josh came in and made so many sweeping changes says as much about Josh, I think, as it does about Shanny.

I love McD and support him 100%...

But I also was not sure about firing Shanny, and if Cutler, BM and the rest had grown up a bit I think he might have had the team on the rise. I think our defense needed some work, but also think they were put in a bad spot over and over and over by bad turnovers.

by Kgrone on Feb 27, 2010 10:47 AM MST up reply actions

And equally bad drafting, personnel decisions and changing DCs

I love Shanny too. I’m not being snarky – Mike did some great things and some bad things. He left behind no defense, a thinner offense than he can admit to and a team that had lost its spark and drive.

That will never be more important to me than the two SBs he brought home. But it’s still true.

Don't say rebuild - say reload...

I liked Shanahan but....

..he was a bad (de facto) GM although he was a good game coach. His talents as a game coach weren’t something he “left” behind, however.

I think he’s giving himself way too much credit. He wasn’t a good administrator nor was he a good talent evaluator.

I posted on the subject of how the Broncos organization has been and is currently being run HERE. I get the impression that many Bronco fans don’t understand how the Broncos were being run just as many didn’t understand what was going on with the Cutler situation. Perhaps bad management has become so commonplace that people no longer recognize it when they see it.

no goats, no glory.

He left us in great shape if the new guy was of a mind like Shanny's ...for the McD pick-up ...not so true!

I still think it ridiculous (!!) to fire Shanny but am looking forward hopefully to McX putting all that behind us.

BTW I see the 24-24 record the definition of stability! If .500 is our low mark than we are a privileged franchise indeed!

Impressed with Marshall's testimony

May be jumping the gun commenting on this topic, since John evidently has something coming on this, but I just had to say that reading about B Marsh’s testimony was a little gratifying. He seemed to own up quickly and unequivocally to his role in the debacle, and unflinching in his desire for justice to be done. This can’t be easy on any of the guys who were there, but especially he and Walker. Praying for them to find some reconciliation and some peace once all this is behind us.

Reading the testimonies at the Post has me thinking about Dumerville's and Marshall's testimony.

Dumerville said that when they drove past the white Hummer, it was just parked, and he didn’t see any police cars. Marshall said the Hummer was surrounded by police cars. And I think they both said they talked about stopping, but decided not to. Also, there would have been all those people who were riding in the limo standing around, and the Hummer must have been pretty badly shot up, so it obviously had to not look right. So I can’t get past wondering why they would decide not to stop to see what was going on. It obviously would have appeared like something bad was happening (something other than a routine traffic stop) if the Hummer was surrounded by police cars and people.

One of them is clearly not telling the truth about such an insignificant matter of whether or not they saw police cars. Unless I have the timeline mixed up or something, and maybe someone can straighten me out, but I just can’t stop wondering about these two conflicting statements.

were they in the same car?

just asking, cuz I’m not following the story.

I'm pretty certain they were.

They both said in their testimony that they talked about stopping, but decided not to. But like I said, maybe I’m confused on the timeline (it is a bit hard to follow sometimes), and maybe they were talking about two different times and places. I don’t know, it just seems unreal to me that they wouldn’t stop to see what was happening. (Maybe Dumerville was driving drunk and simply didn’t want to stop and risk getting arrested.)

by CompUser on Feb 27, 2010 11:00 AM MST up reply actions

That is a curious detail

Reminds me of Rashomon, the Kurosawa film. Everyone has their own memory, their own truth, and potentially their own agenda.

Trindon Holliday ran a 4.22

The guy may be little, but he can’t get hurt if he can’t get caught. Think of the Return possibilities of that. Not to mention the screen game.

Can he catch?

If not, I’m sure Al Davis has him at #1. ; )
