MHR's Live Interactive Mock Draft v1.0 - Open Thread Round #1
Ladies and gentlemen, the day for mock drafting is upon us! Once again, I’d like to thank everyone who will be participating, regardless of your level of involvement. Needless to say, this is a rather ambitious and extremely complex project, so let’s just hope that everything goes smoothly! Please review the rules quoted below before continuing on:
1. When commenting in this post, please DO NOT use the "subject" line for anything other than to announce official picks. Limiting the use of that space will make the picks - and my announcement - stand out and therefore make the draft itself easier to follow.
2. Representatives were asked to submit to me (via e-mail) an ordered target list for their respective teams at least 48 hours prior to the start of this mock draft. Any lists received after that time may still be used, but will not be binding.
3. If a team's representative is not available to make a selection and they either did not submit an ordered target list or said list is no longer applicable, I will then make the pick for them by simply selecting the best player available from NFL Draft Scout’s overall prospect rankings. At my discretion, however, I may deviate slightly from strictly selecting BPA in order to accommodate for need; that said, I guarantee that all picks will be made in a timely fashion.
4. When I announce that THE [LOCATION] [TEAM NAME] ARE NOW ON THE CLOCK, the respective representative will have five minutes to make their pick. Once the selection is recorded, I will then move things along by making the pertinent announcement; that process will continue until we conclude the mock drafting session, with possible breaks therein only if necessary.
5. When an official pick is made, it will be announced in the exact format that follows: WITH THE [X] PICK IN THE DRAFT, THE [LOCATION] [TEAM NAME] SELECT: [PLAYER NAME], [POSITION], [SCHOOL]. Once again, this will be done in the "subject" line of the comment box and the message space will be left blank. Comments on a pick should be made by replying to that official announcement, so long as you observe the general rules of conduct that govern this site when doing so.
6. As soon as possible after making a selection, team representatives are required to e-mail a brief explanation of sorts to me. I suggest that it is writen in the first person as an actual member of your chosen team’s management being asked about the pick in an interview. Since I will compile these and post them alongside the respective picks, I ask that they be kept short.
7. If the volume of comments in this post negatively affects our ability to use it, then I will publish an updated fresh one. If that becomes necessary, I will announce the decision when I begin working on the new one and when it is posted.
As of now, those are the only rules for this mock draft. Should it become necessary, however, I reserve the right to modify them as required. Remember: the draft will begin Sunday, February 28th (today) at noon EST and will continue until the conclusion of the third round at approximately 8PM EST. Representatives are not expected to remain on-site for the duration, but I ask that you be present in advance of your estimated pick times to ensure your participation. Below the fold you will find the official draft order; I will update this list with the mocks picks as often as possible, but that may not be feasible. Thanks again for your interest and I look forward to the results. Cheers and go Broncos!

haha that didnt take long! ;)
Well lets hope it reminds everyone else to pay attention…
we’re all so used to using the bold title…
Bleeding Orange & Blue in The Netherlands
ur not allowed to use the bold (comment title), those are only for the announcements of the picks
1. When commenting in this post, please DO NOT use the “subject” line for anything other than to announce official picks. Limiting the use of that space will make the picks – and my announcement – stand out and therefore make the draft itself easier to follow.

so will each of the picks take 5 minutes regardless of how fast a team makes a pick? so say i make my pick in like 5 seconds, will we still be waiting the rest of the 4 min 55 sec before the next team is on the clock?
Wow, I alomst used the no-no bar, too lol Good question. I would very highly doubt it, but can’t confirm. Five-seconds, eh? You must know your pick, who’s your team?
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
FIVE FULL MINUTES
I intend to allow for the full five minutes in order to discuss the picks and let everyone get their acts together (me chiefly among those) for the upcoming selections.
P.S.: I’ll be using the subject line for any mock related announcement, such as clarifications like this.

as soon as you’re ready.. then the rest of the time people can discuss the picks

Rule #4 above. The next position can’t make a move until they are “put on the clock”.

haha dude trading would be awesome i would love to trade up if suh or mccoy falls to 4 :D my 1st 2nd and 4th if it existed for your 1st ;) eh eh?
In a minute, although I’d be very surprised if either make it that far.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
Trading does add an interesting and fun dimension and I hope to incorporate it in some level in future iterations.

I love the idea of trades. But I’ll bet the logistics could turn nightmarish on your end in a hurry.

I do too, but I think it’s important to establish a baseline and work out the fundamental issues that may arrise today. I think the next step will be to include pre-draft trades with an eye towards full trading in the future…

HA! Thanks… that’s probably the best way to describe my obsession with order!

I figured you might be thinking something like that, with the pre-draft, or basically approved trades.
But even with that it could get complicated. Not trying to talk you out of it, cuz I love the idea. I’m just thinking that they will be more like “IF” trades. Like, IF my guy Bradford is still there at #5 then I’d trade my pick to KC for whatever. If he’s not there, no trade. But my trading partner probably wouldn’t know who I’m targeting, just you. Then there’s the poss, that KC would want to stack up 2 or 3 “IF” trades, just in case my guy Bradford aint there and Johnny X’s guy Haden isn’t there, etc..
I’ll be interested to see what you work out. But I realize you’ve got your work cut out for you already today, so no need to think about this today!
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
Ooh! Can I be Johnny X?
Lol
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
well those would be the indraft trades. the pre-draft trades would be people who want to move up no matter what
I doubt that would happen much. If I’m the Pats with a million picks, I might be targeting McClain at around 9ish, but I’m not making a trade without knowing he’s there.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
Question for moderator:
Rule #3 above seems to indicate we’ve done away with the “backup” system, the system for allowing a secondary representative to pick for a team should the primary’s time expire. Is that correct? Upon time expiration, you just pick for them now, correct?
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
BACK-UPS
Unfortunately, we did not have enough volunteers to create any redundancy; you are correct that I will be using people’s ordered target list or the overall rankings of NFL Draft Scout to select the best player available for those teams’ whose reps are not present at the time of their pick.

still working on your draftboard? haha so am I… updating some rankings while watching the combine ;)

Question?
How would you like it if We made our selection
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
And then put the selector’s comment like this?
Then everyone else comments after.

good question.. i like it..
i think EJ said we had to email the selectors commentto him.. but doing it like this would safe him a lot of work I think.
Bleeding Orange & Blue in The Netherlands
Considering the sheer amount of comments that we should expect in this post, I think it would be best if the formal comments by the reps would be e-mailed to me. Now, you may feel free to post them here too, but I think it’d be best to keep it unofficial and fluid for now and I would still truly appreciate an official version in my inbox…

The Rams have been picking at the top of the draft for quite a few years now, and during that time, they have never taken a QB. In 2009 they passed on Mark Sanchez and chose OT Jason Smith. In 2008 they passed on Matt Ryan and chose DE Chris Long. In 2006 they passed on our boy Jay Cutler and went with CB Tye Hill. It’s time to try a new strategy. Now they have their Franchise QB.

I like the pick very much. Suh is tough to pass on, but the Rams gotta get a QB or they’ll be picking in the top five every year. They got their LT last year, so protection is covered.

very true. And I believe the only position to struggle to live up to expectations of a first round pick more then a QB is the Dline. Broncos used to have several Brown top 5 Dline picks and Robertson from the Jets I think was #4. I like the pick, just not expected

fantastic!!, I feel as though I had to put Eric Berry at #3, as most of our fans wanted him, but I think he is overrated. I feel the safety is a deep position in this draft, perhaps the deepest it has ever been.
I am glad a QB went #1 and gave us a chance at McCoy, I just feel there is a better chance of him being the next Sapp, vs Berry being the next Ed Reed.
wish I could have got here sooner, but THATS WHY WE ALL NEED TO TURN IN OUR BEST AVAILABLE LIST!
I will be here for the 2nd, good luck to all.

This pick comes down to allowing for Jason Campbell, and perhaps future signal callers, a chance to play football standing up. Russell Okung solidified his status as this year’s top LT prospect by measuring in at 6’5+, 307lbs, and putting up 38 reps 36" high (arm length). Reminds of a guy named Ryan Clady. Brian Bulaga’s weak combine reps and short arms, coupled with Anthony Davis’ questionable work ethic made this choice all that much easier.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
It will be interesting to see how this pick pans out....
I can’t see Lionel Richie being their QB of the future with Bradford on the board.
Committing random acts of Brandon since 2006...
Did like the look of Bulaga in the drills but think that Okung comes out on top.. for the reason you stated.. Can’t see Bruce Campbell going high.. unless to Raiders..
by HorseStance on Feb 28, 2010 10:20 AM MST up reply actions
I could definitely see Shanny going with Okung over Bradford.
by Broncoman27 on Feb 28, 2010 10:17 AM MST up reply actions
Sam Bradford was also a consideration, but I just couldn’t allow myself to pull the Lion’s-like-trigger. We choose (Shanny), instead, to build like the Jets and Ravens, by protecting our QB, and giving him a running game, before drafting another one and throwing him to the wolves.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

Me, too! Washington’s current roster contains no true & secure starters for the O’ Line, with the exception of Derrick Dockery, who, at 326lbs, is probably too big to work out long term in the ZB scheme. Veteran OC Casey Rabach is likely walking as an UFA.

from my research on the Chiefs...
Brandon Albert improved as the season went along…with Okung of the board this was an easy pick.
Committing random acts of Brandon since 2006...
Oh nice; I hadn’t received an ordered target list for your Chiefs and had settled on him as your BPA pick off the overall rankings! I think it’s a great pick as he’s already a heck of a player…

I don’t think there is anything to make up.. question is whether McDaniels thinks we can be better without Marshall.. i.e. team distractions.. or Whether Marshall just wants a fresh start after D.Williams business… i think McD and Bowlen would oblige him if he did.
by HorseStance on Feb 28, 2010 10:27 AM MST up reply actions
my guess is draft day trade. Think the feelers are out, teams are waiting to see how free agency starts, Boldin, ect . On draft day once the picks start he’ll be the piece to make McD and X’s dream draft happen

The Bills have so many needs all around. With the departure of TO today and WR Josh Reed, they need some serious help at receiver. This helps to address that. While OL is definitely a concern, having the 9 pick and staring Bryant in the face, it is too good to pass up.

I feel like you can threaten to take Spiller and some teams will trade up to get him. Then you can get an extra pick or player and probably still get Iupati
Iupati isn’t going to last much longer than that anyway and trade downs are hard to accomplish in the heat of the moment. Spiller will be the BPA at #11 and I’m not sure he has that much value.
Hard to say. Guards and centers always drop lower than they’re ranked. As I mentioned above, no guard has been taken in the top ten in over fifteen years. It’s not a fluke, it’s sort of an unwritten rule

- Joe Staley is entrenched at the left tackle spot, so the focus will be on solidifying the right side. Adam Snyder is a very versatile back up but that is all the 49ers should count on him for. per my research, Tuck demanding to start and Osi is likely to leave next year as free agent to get paid. This gives them depth and flexabilty for years. I thought I would go with Mays at the start of this as the secondary only has two real players (Webster and Phillips) and PHillips might not be back to full strength from micro fracture surgery.

Imagine a backfield of Johnson and Spiller, though. Just for a second. The reason I said just for a second is because they would be in the endzone before you got a chance to think of them in the backfield any longer.
If one splits out left and one splits out right, with VY holding the ball in the pocket, what do you do? All three of them can take the ball to the house. That would be a DEADLY situation.

There is a definite weakness in the Texan’s defense at secondary, especially with dunta robinson now leaving. I was hoping for Mays or Thomas to drop to 20 but that did not happen. The other consideration at this pick was Patrick Robinson from Florida St. but I like Wilson better in coverage and instincts.

“The Green Bay Packers are excited to announce that we have selected Bruce Campbell, OT out of Maryland, with the 23rd overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. We expected Bruce to be long gone by the time we were picking (you hear me Al Davis?), so the fact that he dropped is obviously very exciting to us. We are well aware of the injury concerns that some teams had with Bruce, but we feel like selecting him 23rd overall is a great value pick because despite those concerns, Bruce comes with tremendous upside, and we are looking forward to having Bruce on the field once OTA’s begin. We’re excited that we now have a legitimate left tackle that can protect our quarterbacks blind sind for the next decade.”
