Learning from last year and last off-season, I approached things unprofessional, This off-season I'm just going to go with the flow and just go in whatever direction the Broncos want to go.
Is Marshall now having second thoughts about wanting leaving the Broncos?
"I don't know if I would call it, second thoughts," "Last year I handled things totally wrong. I just looked at the business side of things and took things too personally. This year I'm going to remove myself from the situation and let the Broncos decide the direction we're going to go in as an organization."
Brandon Marshall open to playing for Broncos next season
Once again, Marshall is saying the right things. He is putting it all on the Broncos, which puts the team in a tough spot....

Interesting
Marshall’s public stance tends to lead me further down the path that McDaniels will approach him as a reclamation project ala Randy Moss, as opposed to a “we must get rid of him” view ala Terrell Owens.
We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough
Can you believe him.....
Marshall has said the right things before but went back to being his old self again. I for one would love him to grow up and realize what he has and will receive if he keeps his act clean. I just don’t know if he is being honest for the 10th time or this is just a way to gain leverage in negotiations. If Marshall doesn’t look great to the other teams interested in him, then he loses all leverage with the Broncos. In order to get his long term contract from either side, Marshall must put on the greatest act of his life, however it works out.

I'd agree that that is the down side to his comments
Is he being honest, or just playing the politically correct card . . . only time will tell.
I think all of the leverage is on the Broncos’ side, and it will be interesting to see what path McDaniels chooses to take with Marshall.
We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough
But I don't think that just his saying things will affect his value much.
Just as we have our doubts about his sincerely, the coaches/owners of the other NFL teams will have the same doubts. Until he has a track record of actions to back up what he says.
As always, I don’t think he’s going anywhere.
I agree....
….I don’t and won’t buy anything he’s trying to sell anymore. His track record the last 4 years on and off the field doesn’t magically disappear and all of a sudden put the Broncos in a tough spot. I want to see at least 1 year, maybe 2 of perfect behavior (ie – no more drama, tantrums, brushes w/ law, etc.) THEN I’ll believe there was a true change with him.

Nothing to see here....move along
This isn’t some big earth-shaking change form Marshall or the choice facing the Broncos regarding him. It isn’t backing the team into the corner in the least.
The Broncos hold the cards…Marshall has value. Either we have a top 5 WR playing another year for us, or we are going to get a heckuva trade for this guy.
And no, I don’t buy what he’s selling in the least. Think back on how Marshall has talked in the past…these words were spoon fed to him by an agent…it is pretty easy to see.

Backing them into a corner? No...
But, think of the backlash should the Broncos trade him….now that he is giving the impression that he WANTS to be a Bronco.

Dammit.
I wrote a post that is scheduled today this afternoon and now I am not even sure I agree with the sentiments about BMarsh in that post.
Is it better to keep Pro Bowl talent on your football team than to trade them away for draft picks? uhh…YES!
Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.

Not necessarily
Herschel Walker springs to mind. I know the odds are long, but if you can turn one Pro Bowl talent into a haul like the Cowboys got, I say do it every time.
Plus, imagine if one of those picks turns into the second coming of John Elway? SIGH!

Backlash
It only becomes an issue if people believe him. Those who want him to stay and McD to go will be ticked no matter what BM says. Anyone who’s even a little open-minded will take his comments with a grain of salt.
Step aside, my friend, I been doin' it for years.
Said sit on down, open ya eyes, say open up ya ears....
I have been of the thinking...
All along that if we could keep Marshall that we should do exactly that. The problem was that I truly believed that there was no way that he and the Broncos were going to make amends. No doubt our team is better with him on the roster, anybody who says otherwise didn’t think it through. It’s like trading a Kentucky Derby winning horse for 2 horses that someone told you have the potential to win.
I'm thinking the situation...
…is well beyond mitigating backlash. If the Broncos trade him, a certain element will go nuts. If they don’t, the same certain element will find a reason to go nuts.
Its actually become pretty entertaining to find out want new anti-McD spin can be applied to just about anything.

Sorry Bena
Yes you trade him for a 1st and 3rd or more if you can get it if that is what YOU want to do as an organization. My big point here is that our Broncos hold the cards and no one is seriously going to care one hoot if McDaniels trades him as long as we get value no matter what Marshall spoon-feeds us through the media.
Will the MSM try to make a big deal out of it? You bet your rear they will.
Will smart Bronco fans like us care? Heck no.

I’ve been advocating that is a trade is made, to at least get a quality starting player in return, minimum. In my mind, preferably a Star for Star swap. Draft picks are no guarantee.

NAME HIS AGENT.
Every time I see someone credit his recent comments to his agent, or his malcontent-ness to his agent, it’s always some nameless, abstract guy.
In Michael Irvin’s early season interview with the Beast, he called his agent his mentor. I’m pretty sure he’s his uncle, or something. Until proven otherwise, I will continue to maintain that his agent is a POSITIVE influence on Marshall.

He could be throwing a tantrum and saying GIVE ME MONEY AND GET ME OUT OF DENVER!!!

If this is putting the team in a tough spot
I have to believe it’s right where the team wants to be. If there’s a chance he really has matured and grown, as I truly believed he had prior to week 17, and wanted to retain him, this is exactly what I would want him to say.
Time will tell, certainly. But I just can’t join the chorus of get-out-of-towners quite yet. Not after all we have invested in helping the boy become a man. If he truly has.

that was a bad throw
but there’s stories like that for every quarterback. cutler throws a ton of interceptions, true, but he generally keeps the ball down and gets it there fast. IMO he’s a lot less likely to get receivers hurt than QBs who float the ball and with less velocity. orton did float some doozies this year but i think he’s also shown that he’s capable of not doing it as well, and that his arm is plenty strong.
btw, this is part of the arm strength argument that gets left out. people like to say that arm strength doesn’t matter, jim mcmahon being the latest (any guesses why he’d say that?) anyway dammit, arm strength isn’t about the long ball—it’s about getting short and midrange passes there fast in a high speed league. it goes a long way toward keeping receivers safe as well.
zappa, that wasn’t really meant for you— i just got off on a pet peeve tangent and sent you some friendly fire. apologies.
I wrote this comment about scouting a QBs armstrength a couple of years ago:
Arm Strength
Exactly what it sounds like. This is the great equalizer that allows a QB to succeed where others might fail. It is like the wild-card in the deck or the ace in the hole. QBs are trained and drilled to do all of the above to be successful, but in the event that any of the above skills should fail them, arm strength is the “do-over” that just might let them pull off the play. QB makes a bad read and throws into double coverage? Arm strength can give a ball the zip it needs to beat the coverage. QB steps to the wrong part of the pocket and is engulfed by the pressure? Arm strength will allow him to get the ball out anyways. Bad pre-snap read and the entire jailbreak defense has the QB on his heels falling backward? Arm strength allows the QB to deliver an accurate pass regardless. It is a tremendous quality to have, but without the ability to execute the basics above, it is quite literally a loaded weapon.

with regard to MCD.. I think and let me state I think he could get run out of here after this year.. It would take a lot but its certainly not out of question. If the defense falters, if Orton doenst progress (which in turns means the offense doesnt progress) if Smith and Ayers dont look better then I can certainly see MCD being cut lose.

If 2010 is bad, people will be forced to look big picture. Big picture means Cutler was traded and the draft picks and QB acquired in the trade didnt turn out, the offense regresses, the one good thing we had in Nolan was let go due to personal differences with the coach. Our 100 top WR could also be out the door..

You were probably just as critical about Shanahan when he took the Broncos to 8-8 his first season, weren’t you?
Does he mean all of this?
Probably not. But I think that, maybe, he and his agent have sent out feelers to other teams seeking his services and he has been humbled by the feedback. Outside of Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson, I can’t think of a better young receiver in the NFL, but it’s a lot to ask a team to surrender a 1st and a 3rd for him.
I think comparisons of T.O are unfair. BMarsh has never criticized his fellow players or coaches in the media. I still think he could be gone, but I would not at all be surprised if he takes the “shut up and get paid” approach.

They're playing stud poker
Marshall has a pair of kings showing, while the Broncos have three aces. Marshall is giving the pot a bit of a raise. But the Broncos will play it smart: meeting the raise by putting a tender on him, then raising back by offering a deal laden with incentives and clauses that will be met only if Marshall keeps his nose clean and doesn’t miss games due to suspensions. Or else they could go all in and give him a juicy contract and watch him squirm :-P
"I would love to be a Bronco" ...
Not sure if this has been posted anywhere else, but thought it was worth a look …
http://www.nfl.com/videos/denver-broncos/09000d5d81632850/Brandon-Marshall-on-set
In that video it strikes me that..
He understands the position he is in.. as a restricted FA he understands the broncos hold the cards and is willing to live with and embrace whatever comes from that.
The question becomes now how badly Josh and the broncos want to keep him, how much his off field issues take away from his abilities and whether Josh thinks that he can work with Brandon to create his vision..
In some ways i agree with McG that at some point he is going to have to stop purging the distractions from this teams and start working with players like Brandon to re-mold their attitudes.. this is something that a good coach should be able to do.
Getting draft picks for him is kind of pointless because you don’t know what you will get.. as they say better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.
If we can hang on to Marshall, and continue to help him mature into one of the greats to play the game.. that i think is much more valuable than just constantly kicking players that are not totally on board.. what Josh needs to do is help him on board..
If he is traded and we get picks and decide to pick up Bryant in the first to replace him.. we don’t know how that will turn out.. Part of me would like to keep Marshall and draft Bryant and have an elite wr core for years to come.
After this i hope we keep him, as Josh has said in the past he wants to win and he wants to win now not down the line.. keeping Brandon would be in line with that.. trading him for picks wouldn’t IMO.. It would require more people learning the offense more people having to synchronize with each other… It would set us back another year.
Ok gotta stop rambling.. peace.
This bodes well for both the Broncos and Marshall
Brandon wanting to be in Denver help his value in a trade scenario.
Although, I’m not entirely sure Denver will trade him. It’s very annoying to see the locals blindly assuming that he’s gone. If there’s one thing McDaniels is, it’s unpredictable.
Like some said before: He’ll do what HE believes is right for the team. And that might be keeping #15.

I want B-Marsh to stay!
Really… If he really thinks like that and handles himself as a pro, he deserves being a Bronco and he will help us winning some Super Bowls =)
nfl network interview
1. I like Sapp, the rest of the crew (esp. eisen) is Terrible. good lord, they are painful to watch studder and stammer through what is supposed to be an interview. and supposedly they do this for a living…
2. i REALLY want to like BMarsh. I REALLY want him to stay in Denver. i don’t trust him, though. I can’t really put my finger on it. I feel like his agent told him about a favorite saying of mine: Your first interview for a new job is the way you left your previous one. I feel ilke he is hoping that McD or the Broncos organization makes a PR mistake and he can “test the waters” without looking like the bad guy. I hope that’s not the case…
1.Sapp is the only good guy there in my opinion, he is also pretty funny
2. I don’t trust B-marsh but i want him to stay because i think it is a big setback if you lose a elite WR.
So i am kind of in the same situation as you
He's putting both parties "in a position"
He is changing the dynamic of the relationship, but it will be on him to deliver. If he talks this mess now and doesn’t back it up, or if this is just delaying the inevitable childish tantrum (which will be worse if his plan backfires) then he will look worse then he did before this all started.
Whether of not he is to be believed
is irrelevant. He has made a smart and calculated move here. This places the Broncos in the cross-hairs on this issue and they will be painted as the bad guys if/when things fall through. Its a smart play by Marshall and his agent.
Playing GM
Brandon is staying put no matter what he says or how many PR lessons he gets. If you are Ozzie Newsome are you going to give up a first and a third for a receiver who you know is a hair away from getting suspended again for who knows how many games? Obviously, there are teams out there that theoretically might make the move … but it’s a BIG gamble.
