can royal fit in?
I was going to do the next update to my Mock Draft and all my pre-draft thinking got me thinking too much. I was going to keep Marshall for a change after his lines of BS he is spewing about wanting to be here. I have also seen a few hopefully trades by others on MHR involving aquiring Ted Ginn Jr from Miami. That got me thinking of proposing a realistic trade for Ginns services that would serve as our deep threat option here in town. Those scenarios left me with too many receivers on this team and thinking of how to unload one of them. The only person who seemed to have any real trade value would be lil Eddie Royal.
For the record I like Royal a lot and think that he has a lot of potential in this league. I think that if he is on this team he is best suited to be in the slot. I do not think he is a legitimate number 2 receiver in the system we are running. Watching him not be able to get off the line and then very rarely getting seperation afterwards at first made me think it was the plays. But then whenever we would line Gaffney up in his place he had no problems. So as I said, Royal would be best in the slot. Lots of people can play in the slot though. Though Stokley is older, he can still play it, as can Lloyd and maybe even McKinley even though a little oversized. Plus a ton of other receivers we could pick up later in the draft or through free agency very cheaply. Royal would not be THAT much of an upgrade for the limited role for the value that he still holds in the league.
What is Eddie Royals trade value? He was taken as a highend 2nd rounder, could we get a second rounder back for him? More? Maybe a player. I see mocks with us acquiring Yanda from Baltimore. Thinkg we could trade Royal for Yanda and a 3rd rounder? Lots of teams could use a good quick receiver and may be willing to part with an up and coming 2nd or 3rd round player of their own. If so would you do it?
I like Royal, but is he that much better than someone else we could pickup? Would you trade him because he has value and there are positions we need more?

Personally, I tend to believe
that Royal was blindsided by a combination of factors: (1)A sophomore slump, (2)A new offensive scheme (he had to think too much about what he was supposed to do), and (3)I thought I remember reading that he had a bad ankle for much of the year.
I would expect to see him bounce back in 2010 and play a more significant role.
So, I voted “no” on the poll.

i hope you are right
i just hope it is not that he caught people by surprise as a rookie and people have enough film to gameplan for him. I voted ‘no’ too, but if the Broncos got a VERY good offer and traded him I do not think I would jump all over McDaniels

good!
i hope we keep him and am very encouraged by all of the “no” votes. By your logic though, as an (un)proud owner, sadly we should still have javon walker on our team :)

That's a bummer bfree.
Wanna hear what jerseys I have?
Cutler, Scheffler, Marshall and Royal
It would make sense if all of them left Denver……… I think McD is just trying to teach me to never buy jerseys.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

I've heard that some people
are passing them off on eBay as a unique style of Chicago Bears jersey. ;-p

That's a good idea.
Both of them are orange, right?

If we trade BM, the question of “if Royal can fit in” will be a key factor in Denver’s success or lack thereof in 2010.
Will we get the play making, dynamic Royal of 2008 or the ineffective and unimportant player we had in 2009.

I'm hoping
that we keep Marshall, and see Royal have a career year

after last year,
royal won’t have a ton of trade value. We wouldn’t get much back for dealing him. really what that decision comes down to is if McD thinks that next year will increase or decrease royal’s value. if Mc D thinks he will have another year like last year, then he’d be foolish not to trade him, as he will have little to no trade value after a second consecutive year like that.

Not the right time to deal Royal
Trading Royal after this season would be a classic example of buying high and selling low. While it is certainly hypothetically possible that someone would blow the Broncos away with a great offer for Royal’s services, I just don’t see us getting value proportional to his potential at this time. Hopefully Royal has a better year this coming season and they can determine his long range potential and whether to keep him long term or not. Most likely he ends up somewhere in between his performances during his first two years.
My main question on Royal is what role he should play in the return game this coming season. I remember hearing that the plan early on this year was for him to focus on getting reps at receiver and learning to operate in the new offense. After we were unable to find consistent alternatives in training camp and early in the season, Royal took back a larger share of return duties. We know how explosive he can be as a returner (recall his two TDs in the game at San Diego last year). However, my contention is that this took away from his development as a receiver.
So assuming we keep Royal, what will we see? Will the Broncos aggressively pursue another option as a kickoff or punt return specialist? Will Royal get more time in the slot rather than at #2 receiver with Stokely’s role continuing to diminish? Does Royal just need a little more time to adjust to a new offense? Was his drop in production due to changes in offensive philosophy, inconsistency, frustration, or just due to being more of a focus in the defensive game planning by our opponents?

Seems like everyone forgets!
Eddie was about a grab and 1’ away from a spectaculat catch 6 early in the season…IMO he wasn’t used to his potential most of the year and being the return man didn’t help much. If McDaniels is smart and we know he is, he will utilize Eddie’s strengths this year instead of kicking a dead horse in the butt.
