This Offseason's questions-And my answers to them
In this offseason, the Denver Broncos have a lot of questions about what they are going to do. Definitly not as many as last season, but there are a couple of things I want to share my opinion on with you guys.
At the beginning of the season, we were offered a trade for him, when BMarsh's value was very low. McD could have pulled the trigger, and gotten us a pick. But instead he kept BMarsh and gave him one of his most productive seasons as a Bronco. Now, people think after the suspension at the end of the year that McD is fed up with him. I dont think so, and neither should you. This is a professional business. People dont hold grudges, as everyone is trying to make money and win. I think both BMarsh and McD, whteher they like eachother personally or not, know that they both need eachother. I think we give Marshal a high tender, and try to keep him. But as we learned ast year, no one on the team is immune to trades, but I think if someone wants him, there gonna have to cough up a lot and I dont see that happenin.
2. What to do with Orton? At thispoint, he had his best year, but many of us, and rightfully so, werent eccstatic about it. Yes his yards were high, but so were his attempts. I said this in one comment section: compare the numbers of Aaron Rodgers and Orton. rodgers had a worse OL, the same amount of attempts, and threw over 500 yards more, a hell of a lot more TDs, and less picks. Im not sayin Orton is Rodgers talent wise, all im saying is for a "game manager," he had some gunslinger mentality towards the end of the year.
So, what do we do with him? I say we give him a 2-3 year deal, and bring maybe an FA QB to compete for the job. By no means should Orton feel as though his job is safe after such a year. I have made it known I would like for us to draft a QB early. Well, the chances of that are slim, as 5 teams ahead of us could use a QB and only 2 are worthy of our 10/11 pick. If any of these two options are done, I think we would make the best out of our QB situation
3. What do we do with the 10/11 pick? There are plenty of options here, and I think we have a lot of bargaining power to trade down if we need to. Right now, I'm looking for us to draft either Clausen or Bradford. I dont think we are even gonna sniff clausen, but I think we have a shot at Bradford. I like him, because scouting reports about him say he is by far the most accurate QB and the most cerebral, which is exactly what McD's system calls for. He also has quite a bit of arm strength, which can be used to stretch the field.
If the QB's arent there, which is most likely, I think we go with Dan Williams, Carlos Dunlap, Brian Price, or trade down. either of these DL would be great upgrades, and would help a need immensly. However, if McD doesnt want them, then we should trade down, and sweep up Pouncey or Iupati. Some of you may be asking why not McClain or Dez? well i'll tell u. Dez is easy to say no to. nothing against the guy, hes great, but I think our depth at the position is fine. I think with Bmarsh comin back, Royal gettin more involved, and the momentum from Gaff last game, drafting a WR with such a high pick would be dumb.
Now, why not McClain? Well first, we have a lot of money tied in at LB, and we dont want to become the Seahawks. 2nd, I think Brandon Spikes would actually be btter for our system, and we could get him in the 2nd. I know Spikes is slow, but we dont need a speed demon at this spot. He really reminds me of a young Andra Davis, which is great for this system. He's big and physical, and was a leader on the Florida D for 3 yrs. Pretty impressive.
4. What do we do with our OL? Some of us here have said that Harris is a liabiltity because of injuries. I think he'll be fine, and the OT spot is fine as well. The only thing we could use is a better backup, and I think we can get one in Ciron Black from LSU in the later rounds.
But what about the interior, our weakness? well first, we bring back Kuper. People say he is a zone blockin guy. This is not true. He has the perfect body for the power game, and he should do just fine in his 2nd yr in the system. So what about the LG and C spot? Well, I think we should go after Logan Mankins hard. I say this not just because of his background or his name, but because he has experience in this O, and he can impart starting experience onto the rest of the OL, and also be a great starter for us. I would also like to see us draft Pouncey from UF, or if we cant get Mankins, Iupati. I'm not sayig Olson because I dont want to rush the guy into the spot.
5. What about the DL? I'm not gonna lie, the DL exceeded my expectations, but it wasn't enough. We need not only bigger guys there, but stronger as well. This is why I want us to go after the following guys in FA, in no particular order: Ryan Pickett, Johnny Jolly, Casey Hampton, Vince Wilfork, and Jarvis Green. I think if we can get one of these guys, we'll have already made great strides on this unit. in the draft, I already said who I want early for this unit. If we could get 2 of any of these guys i mentioned, FA and draft, I think our D can go to the next level, and finally stop the run.
Those I think are the biggest qustions this offseason. If we cana nswer even 2 or 3 of them, I think we'll be a great team. I truly believe that this team is on the verge of being elite, and we should be in 10 if the pieces fall in the right places.

Love your article, DB1414, very well presented & thought out
1. I’m with you on Marshall. I don’t think he’s going anywhere. The end of 2009 struck me as looking like the beginning of the season. Marshall misbehaves, gets benched. He came back & had a great year. I’m guessing we’ll see the same thing this year.
2. I think we give Orton at least 2 more years to prove himself. Something to consider when comparing Orton to Rodgers: Orton was in his first year with the coach, the system and the team. Rodgers was in his fifth year with the same team, fourth with the same coach, in the third year with the same top two receivers. Let’s see how Orton is doing after having three years with the same top 2-3 receivers.
3. The college draft is as mysterious to me as the pantheon of Hindu gods. I would think that OL and LB would be two priorities since those are two units whose production slipped as the year wore on. Contrary to popular belief (in terms of tackles made) our d-line improved from the first half of the season to the second.
4. I definitely agree that we need to improve the interior of the o-line. Clady, Kuper and Harris should be fine in their second season. I tend to be more in favor of a mix of vets and draftees to fill the remaining spots than filling both with draftees (but again, note my comment regarding the draft in #3. LOL)
5. The D-line needs depth. We need to bring in some younger guys who can learn from the vets. I think I’m in the minority in thinking that the d-line did what they were asked to do in 2009. Their job, as I understand it, was to tie up blockers and let the linebackers make the play. If you look at the tackles made in the 1st half of the season, they did just that. The d-line had something like 60+ tackles while the LBs had over 200. In the 2nd half of the season, however, the d-line had to make more tackles, ending up with around 90 tackles, while the LBs tackles dropped to under 180. Another contributing factor, from what I’ve read is that we played a lot of 5-2 in the early season, and went to a more conventional 3-4 was the season went on – this would mean that the LB (who are supposed to be the playmakers) are starting farther off the line.
I absolutely agree that if we can resolve even a couple of these areas, we will be a strong competitor in 2010.
Sorry about the book-length response. The downside to having a rainy Saturday keeping me inside. ;-p

thx for the kind words
And I agree with u with most of what u said. On orton ur rite, but his play was not on par and deteriorated, and it all culminated in him losing the chiefs game. And on the DL, I think its rly a group of average guys, and although they didn’t do bad, we could definitly improve and in turn we would stop the run better

No arguments with any of that
I think we saw in Orton what happened to him in Chicago, he played great, got an ankle hurt then did not do as well.
I think the telling thing will be how he performs in his second year with this offense. If we see a repeat of 2009, then we most likely will need to be looking for options — unless it can be demonstrated that his struggles were due to factors other than himself (i.e. RBs who run away from the line of scrimmage, receivers with bricks for hands, etc. LOL)

i agree, im not sayin he should be cut
And he should be our starter, I am anxious to see how he does with the factors u mentioned

Orton signs a two year deal, and starts for one.
Then it’s time for Tommy B. I don’t think he was a casual pickup, or drafted to be a backup.
well see
But that’s high expectations for a 6th rd QB from a small school

You could well be right
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, especially if Orton continues to do what he’s done every year where he’s been the primary starter: improve his stats across the board.

Agree jay...TommyB's time is coming!
If KO slips in his improvement (which I doubt) or were to get hurt (could happen at any time!) TB will be ready AND able to step in and show what he’s got…

It's possible that I might be blowing sunshine out of my butt, but I don't think so.
I read a lot of draft prospect reports every year. For some reason, I never take note of who I’ve been reading, so it makes it hard to go back and find the report.
Still, I remember looking at a lot of QB prospects, last year, because of the Cutler trade. Someone had him as a “sleeper/project” player because of an NFL caliber arm, his size and his smarts. When he was picked, I kind of smiled. and figured to wait and see how it panned out.
I knew he’d take a couple of years before he’d be ready, or to see if he’d ever be ready. His preseason performance left me pleasantly surprised. If he continues to progress at that rate, I really believe he’ll be “the guy”.
Orton was another pleasant surprise. He’s proven to be a lot tougher than I anticipated. His arm was never an issue to me, but watching him in Chicago had previously left me unimpressed (probably because of the less than stellar supporting cast and an offensive scheme that was drier than a popcorn fart). His not going through the progressions on his reads, and his penchant for throwing the ball away sooner than I’d like can possibly be chalked up to getting comfortable in a new system, and lack of protection, so I’ll have to take a “wait and see” approach. The phantom sacks really fried my shorts, though. That’s what has me looking around to see what other options migh become available.
That brings me back to Tommy B. If he gets a chance, and it sticks, we have our answer.
If the foo shits, …..
Well I've had the benefit of watching him for the 3 years he was QB for Fresno St.
I watched him grow, watched him mature, watched his development, and watched him learn and rebound from his mistakes…This kid is the real deal in the perfect situation to continue to develop and learn the pro game…I hope despertately that nothing happens to KO but I can tell you that I can hardly wait to see what TB can do with whatever opportunity he gets…I am confident he will suprise and impress many!!!

I can't understand
why everyone thinks Tom B will be the next great QB. I mean I think he has potential and could do well (aka the intangibles) but that in no way guarantees he will be successful. I remember not too long ago everyone was saying that Simms should be starting instead of Orton and look how that turned out. Now all of a sudden everyone knows Tom B should be the starter? I have to believe that the best QB will be starting hands down and that McD knew what he was doing when he put Simms 2nd and Tom B 3rd. If Tom B moves up on the depth chart this year then we’ll know something. We’ll know that he is good enough and has a grasp enough on the system to be a backup…not a starter. Until he is named to that position (whether by playing fill in duty for an injury to the starter) or by earning it in training camp I can’t believe that he will be better than Orton just because people like his “potential” or because he did good in a meaningless preseason game. Don’t get me wrong I like the guy and hope he does fantastic and hope he starts for us one day but I don’t know how everyone thinks he is better than Orton or even will be.
I'm not saying Brandstater is definately the second coming.
You hit the nail on the head. Training camp will tell the tale. Yes, I just did predict he will come on strong. A fellow can hope, can’t he? I truly like Orton, but he really left me feeling flat on more than a couple of occasions. I want him to succeed, but my wishes won’t make it so. He needs to pick up his game if he’s to be the long term answer. As opposed to spending another draft pick on another wait and see project, I’d prefer to hope the “answer” is already on the roster. Kyle is definately serviceable, but I’d like to see him develop into the ranks of special. If he can do that, great. If not, he’s an excellent backup.
My expectations
for Brandstater are very low and I don’t think he is our long term answer at QB. I hope we draft a qb high also 1414 because Orton, Simms, and Brandstater don’t excite me at all and I think McDaniel’s success or failure as the Broncos head coach depends on what he does at the qb position this offseason (or at the latest next offseason). If McDaniels doesn’t upgrade the qb position this offseason or next offseason I think Mr. Bowlen will be looking for a new head coach in 2012. I don’t think Clausen or Bradford will fall to us at 10 or 11 but if one of them do I hope McDaniels drafts them and if both are gone he still needs to draft a qb in the 2nd or 3rd round.
To play Devil's Advocate
What if McDaniels does draft a quarterback early in the draft, and then Orton comes in and lights it up in 2010? What do we do then?

that was supposed to be a question for broncorob
And I’m not disputing your viewpoint nor trying to be combative.

Drafting Rivers worked out for SD
I’ll play along… though I don’t want to be mistaken for implying that Brees/Rivers is the talent standard we should be gauging here… just the terms of roster construction. Also, I understand injury played into it, but I think its effect is debatable…
Anybody remember the terms of Brees trade? Or was he cut? I used to know these thngs, alas…

He was cut by the chargers and entered free agency and was signed by the Saints in 2006..
Near the bottom of this article, it talks a bit about his jettison from SD following his injury.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Point of Clarification
Rivers was drafted by the Giants, and Manning was drafted by the Chargers.
Manning threw a hissy fit & said he wouldn’t play for San Diego so SD traded him to the Giants for Rivers.

I actually felt bad for him during the draft.
Yes, what went down was on the advice of his father. I thought he handled himself well on stage as the crowd booed him mercilessly. It would seem that both teams got what they wanted, and I don’t think either regrets the trade, though some Giant fans may beg to differ.
