Back in Blue: Final Opinion on WR Brandon Marshall
For the last two months, I like every Bronco fan have had the priveledge (for lack of a better term) of watching the Brandon Marshall situation unfold with our beloved team. I felt it a bit of an omen when I came downstairs today, turned on the NFL Network, and the first thing I saw was the Marshall touchdown against Dallas to win the game.
As of right now, there are a good portion of the Denver fan base who believe there is no solution but to trade Brandon Marshall away from the Broncos. Others feel the Broncos will be better suited just to hang on to Marshall and give him the pay raise he deserves.
We've had countless great posts on MHR in regards to the Marshall situation. Mock drafts predicting he will be traded, a statistical overview of his impact to this team, financial scenarios, et al. For every post, a great point regarding Marshall is made, and it's hard to veer one way or another in regards to his unique situation.

Marshall is one of many big name RFA wide receivers available this offseason, and oddly enough he is the only one expected to leave his current team. That list includes the likes of fellow Pro Bowlers Vincent Jackson and Miles Austin. So why is Marshall the only receiver considered to be leaving his team this year?
Does the media want to see Denver trade another big piece of their team? Is it just good food for thought? Or is now really the right time for Denver to rid of its superstar wide receiver?
I'll leave the debate up to this comment thread, but I have come to a conclusion about what I personally would like to be done with Brandon Marshall.
What do we know as facts thus far?
- Marshall has had his share of offseason issues, being arrested multiple times and receiving a one game suspension from the NFL following an appeal (originally four games)
- Marshall has been suspended by the Broncos twice. Once for conduct detriment and the next for "accountability" issues.
- Marshall has had previous injuries, has never gone a season without an injury, but has played through multiple injuries.
- Marshall is set to be a restricted free agent, making his value in return for a trade a 1st and 3rd round pick assuming the Broncos give him a high tender.
- Marshall is one of five players in NFL history with 100 receptions in three straight seasons
- Marshall is a two time Pro Bowl player
- Marshall is the biggest playmaker on Denver's offense
- Marshall seems to have a good relationship with head coach Josh McDaniels. "I couldn't ask for a better coach"
- Pat Bowlen indicated Marshall was due a big "pay raise" in the near future
- According to Shannon Sharpe, three teams are definitely interested in Marshall
- Marshall is 1st and 3rd All-Time for receptions in a single game (21, 18)
I'm sure I've missed a couple, but you all get the jist. Marshall has had very high high's for the Broncos, and very low low's. There was a point where Broncos fans feared he may have been suspended for eight games, and maybe a full season.
In fact, Marshall is probably one traffic violation away from facing a lofty suspension from the NFL. His legal issues have to be concerning for any prospective team, but his talent and unique size/speed ratio is more than intriguing.
Marshall has been nothing but great to Denver's fan base. He has embraced Broncos fans, and any time I have ever encountered Marshall, he has been a gentleman. Staying after practices and Fan Fair to sign autographs and take pictures, handing out mini footballs before practice to young kids, etc. I'll admit, when I heard of Marshall's prior legal issues, I questioned it strongly based on the kind of person he was at practice.
Right now, Marshall is saying all the right things. He has said, "I would love to be a Bronco," and, "I would love to finish my career here in Denver." On the other side of things, head coach Josh McDaniels is saying the right things as well.
Both parties realize this game is not just a game, it's a business. The Broncos may see an offer to Marshall that is too high to match, and they will just take the picks and reload the position through the draft and free agency. There is also the fact that Denver has multiple other free agency issues to resolve.
Marshall is going to seek top five wide receiver money, and I think that is fair since he has performed like a top five receiver in the last three years. The highest paid receiver in the NFL right now is Larry Fitzgerald, who receives roughly $10 million per year.
I do not expect Marshall to receive that much cash from the Broncos or any team, but I could see him earning anywhere between seven and nine million dollars per season.
Any contract with Marshall is going to be tough to agree upon. It will likely be filled with restrictions and incentives, and probably a very back heavy deal.
My final opinion on the Marshall situation? If I were Broncos brass, I would start the offseason by offering Marshall a back-end heavy contract. Five years, $42 million with incentives, restrictions, and a signing bonus based on his performance off the field in terms of staying out of trouble. I would guarantee Marshall $18 million with the possibility that some could go back to Denver if he gets in trouble off the field.
If Marshall does not agree to sign a deal such as this (the numbers could be way off) I would give him a very high tender and make it known that he is a valuable commodity to this team, which he is. I would entertain offers for him, and if no team offered him more than $10 million per season, I would match the highest offer.
If any team offers Marshall more than $10 million dollars per year with fewer incentives and restrictions, I would respectfully part ways, because that amount of money cannot be invested in someone with such character concerns.
Still, if I could write in a suggestion to McXanders, I would suggest they try and sign Marshall prior to March 5th, and if a deal cannot get done, tender him early and make a trade as soon as possible if need be.
After seeing Marshall's highlights on NFL Network today, I was reminded of what a valuable part to this offense he truly is. He is a playmaker in every sense of the word, and if he is willing to help this team win then I see no reason why we shouldn't bring him back.
At worst, Marshall will net the Broncos a first and third round draft pick, but I think his best value to this team is coming back with a long-term deal. Incentive laden, of course.
I say bring Marshall back. Build this offense around him, and let Megatron do his work. Oh yeah, I also think we should all start calling Marshall "Megatron".
Bring him back Denver, because we're reloading--not rebuilding.
Megatron is only unstoppable if you chain him to the bottom of the ocean :D

i want marshall to be a bronco in 2010 and beyond
but as you pointed out if it gets to be to expensive then the brass should tender and trade him asap
but brandon will always be the beast

"Born like this / Into this"
Haha I know he will always be the beast
For one of my projects at USF, I made a metamorphasis drawing of Megatron into Brandon Marshall, so that made me think of it

Calvin Johnson already has the nickname Megatron
Not really sure why though…
The 2010 Denver Broncos will surprise the world.
Darn it!
What a tool! He deserves it though…

No one is going to give us a first and a third for him...
So I agree with you and say we give him his contract with as many behavior clauses that we can squeeze in there. And if he doesnt accept it, offer him a one year tender and make him play another season for his money. But we shouldnt give in. I think we hold all the power in our hands.
Excellent insight too. Thanks!

Great summary Sayre
I’m inclined to think Marshall will be back for a couple of reasons (which are merely reiterating what I’ve said in other posts):
1)Bowlen said that Marshall would get paid if he produced. He produced, so I tend to believe that Bowlen will make good on his word.
2)The end of the season strangely resembled the start: Marshall misbehaved, was benched then came back and produced. Marshall misbehaved, was benched . . . I have the feeling he and McDaniels have come to terms with each other and will work again.
The only place that I find myself in disagreement is on the image of Marshall as a Top 5 receiver. Very few of his stats have been consistently in the Top 5 — receptions is the only one that leaps to mind. His other stats have tended to be in the Top 10-15. Is he a playmaker? Absolutely — look how many times he was thrown to this season: almost double anybody else. Is he a beast? Sure he is, look what happened in the Pro Bowl when a DB tried to solo tackle him. I just think for McDaniels/Xanders to accept a trade proposal, that proposal will have to be outrageously one-sided with the advantage all going Denver’s way.
But then, I could also be totally wrong. ;-p

Agreed, Top 5 is debatable
I’ve questioned the “Top 5” label in other posts as well. There’s no doubt he’s a playmaker but he has too many drops and is limited as a deep threat. Probably the #1 possession receiver though. IF (big if) we could get a 1st and 3rd I say take it and get the best available O linemen with the picks.
All the hoop-la lately is just a smoke screen of what's to come.
Come on you all…We know who Brandon Marshall is and the past 2 weeks slobbering and carrying on is worser than WWE on Monday Night Raw. I feel the is a trade in the works at this very moment and McDaniels is working every angle to get the best for the Team and marshall. It’s enevitable isn’t it? The issues in all, they weren’t just play ground antics.
Probable -- Most likely
Inevitable — not necessarily

God, I hope so!
Trade the dude. He’s a walking question mark from one week to the next. You don’t build teams on questions. You build them on answers.

Love to keep him in Denver.
I’m trying to look at this objectively, which is no easy task. I appreciate the fact that you suggest keeping his salary offer below that of Fitzgerald. Marshall is a beast, be he’s no Fitzgerald. IMO, he doesn’t measure up to Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson, either. The receptions are there, but the TDs are not. With that said, losing him would be a blow to the team, and he’d be hard to replace.
I love his ability to muscle for the ball, but there are many times when I wish he would just push straight ahead instead of dancing around, and inevitably losing some of the yards he just gained. While he doesn’t have breakaway speed, his ability to win the jump ball situations could be exploited more, downfield. We saw more of that as this past season progressed.
The DUI was a black eye, for sure. Domestic violence situations need to be taken seriously, but here, he may be getting a bum rap. There has never been any evidence of injury in any of the incidents he’s been acccused of. In relationships, some people just know the right buttons to push to get a desired response. I’ve been lucky enough to get away from some circumstances that could have easily escalated to needing assistance of a police officer to calm the situation. There are gold diggers out there that use the threat of domestic abuse to get their way. None of us were there, so we have no right to judge.
Over time, I’m sure Brandon will continue to matue. He could become even better with proper coaching. The question at Dove Valley remains a tough one. They’d love to keep him, but at what price.
Is he valuable? Absolutely. Top five? Maybe. Top Three? No.

I agree
He isnt top 3. But i do believe he is top 5. And like you mentioned, every time he’s gotten into trouble or supposed trouble he has had the charges released. Even the commissioner reduced his suspension at a time when the commissioner was trying to “be tough” .
I think a lot of Brandon’s issues are guilty by association. Of course he made that association but it seems half the troubles he gets himself into are quickly thrown out
You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?
You know where I wanna go? I'll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called Aspen
No disrespect johnny and I actually want to feel as you do here, but...
I doubt seriously that Joe regular citizen would likely be able to get his issues “quickly thrown out” and/or “charges released” quite so easily as a top NFL Player would/could…Just sayin’

Hey Sayre
Since this post is titled the “final” opinion on Marshall — does that mean we can’t write about him any more? ;-p
We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough
Job offer
Mr. Bedinger, this is Pat Bowlen. LOL
I love the way you think Sayre. I can’t find anything to disagree with, on your solution to this topic. Well done
I think that Brandon Marshall will stay this year unless a team blows McDaniels mind with a great trade. I mean a 1st , 3rd and a starting player.
Think back to last year with Jay Cutler – we got a 2 – 1st Round Picks – 3rd and Kyle Orton.
If there isn’t a Great Offer – McDaniels will keep him. Say Baltimore’s 1st , 3rd and M. Yanda.
Go Broncos!!!
How about
Our 1st round and Marshall to Dallas for their 1st round 2nd or 3rd round and Miles Austin. I think I’d jump on that one.
