Marshall trade option

Many many posts have Brandon Marshall being tendered then the Ravens picking him for the 1st and 3rd tender picks. As many many experts know general manager Ozzie Newsome doesn't believe in giving away high draft picks for anyone.

But here is a new wringle. The Ravens would like to trade (move) Troy Smith, 6'1" 225 3 yr QB from Ohio St.  They would like to get a 3rd-4th round pick for him. No I do not think Smith is an NFL QB starter but he does have intangiables that really fit a spread offense.

My offering for debate is, if Denver does NOT sign a FA QB vet or not draft a QB (yes I am OK with Clausen at #10/11 but would still prefer McClain) then trade Brandon Marshall to Baltimore for their #25 pick plus Smith.

Sorry DL...Not of fan of Smith or that trade.

I’d want #1 and #3 or their #1 and Edwards/Kanan, etc..

Same. Post was for further discussion if Marshall is not signed.

No thanks – Smith is a below average NFL QB.

If thats all we get

I would be very happy to keep BMarsh. It’s going to cost somebody a lot more than that

I'd rather keep Marshall

He has some good positives that would be very hard to replace.

Talk about a dice roll =)!!!

More like a grab bag, cause you’d never know what you’re going to get.

What do we know about Smith over the last three years? How’s his development comming along? I don’t know anything about the kid, and while many of you might, we certainly have no way of knowing how he’s developed. It would be absolutely nuts to give anything more than a 7th round pick and a thank you for a clip board holder with no game film or inside information as to how he’s progressed. At least Brandstater knows the playbook. I’d rather keep him as the #2. And I agree with rg2247, I wouldn’t be happy with a single first round pick for Marshall.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

A little about Smith

He was on line to be the starter, the year they drafted Flacco. He had a seaon ending injury, I think during preseason. Flacco took over, & the rest is history.

by rg2247 on Feb 9, 2010 1:50 PM MST reply actions

If your admitting Smith is nothing more than a career backup QB, it would not be wise to pass on a 3rd round pick for a career backup QB.

You can draft career backups in round 6 or 7. Even better, you can sign them as UFA.

I vote a big no to this trade.

BM for N’Gata. BM for Flacco or BM for Rice. I’d do those deals if I were Denver. Baltimore has nothing else to offer Denver beyond those players. Denver would be foolish to trade BM for their low 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks.

doubt they would give up either, with other options in the market and the draft.

We can probably forget about McClain...

Since the Chiefs cut two LB’s yesterday it is pretty evitable that they will once again reach for a player to fill their need. I don’t want to trade Marshall if we can help it. It would only set us back and we should be looking forward . If the Rams pass on a quarterbak again then they will probably pick McCoy or Suh. There is no telling what Shanny will do with his first pick and is he going to stick with Campbell. I think Seattle will take a quarterback if the right one is available. I just don’t want trade our WR for nothing and trading Marshall for a 1st (probably a Guard) and a two-bit quarterback isn’t enough. Any team that ‘wants’ Marshall will have to pay dearly.

by bfree2bronc on Feb 9, 2010 3:58 PM MST reply actions

That's scary, the Chiefs I mean

I really think McClain fits McDaniels’ mold to a T. He could be our defensive quarterback and its heartbeat for many, many years after Dawk retires. The problem is, that means he probably fits Pioli’s mold also, although I would hope Pioli drafts some protection for Matt Cassel before he gets hurt. If they found a way to move back in the round they could still get a great OT and draft a LB in the 2nd. But they had a need at LB before, and now they really need a couple. So that sucks for the McClain Train.

  1. 5 seems like a huge reach for a LB, but I hold the idea that McClain is faster than given credit for and might move further up the big boards, especially if he runs a sub 4.65. Crazy? Maybe not.

Agreed on McClain being a reach

I think the Chiefs are going to try and trade down IMO. I think we really want Berry but if we are unable to trade down we will go with Okung or possibly McClain. I dont think the cut of the LBs though was much of anything they where guys most of us Chiefs fans forgot where even on the roster….I think the only way we can trade out is if a team really wants a QB which I dont see happening with this years QB class..

by tomahawk44 on Feb 10, 2010 7:08 AM MST up reply actions

Funny how last year...

Bradford very easily could’ve been the top pick with McCoy and a few others not far behind. One year later there’s nobody worth a top 10 pick. I guess that’s what they get for staying in school. XD

by Kgrone on Feb 10, 2010 7:45 AM MST up reply actions

haha yea

dont be a fool ..stay in go in the draft!

I think Bradford would still be a high pick if he didnt get hurt..he can still be a good QB

by tomahawk44 on Feb 10, 2010 8:03 AM MST up reply actions

The LB’s they cut, were a couple of nobody’s. Probably practice squad players.

by rg2247 on Feb 9, 2010 4:53 PM MST up reply actions

True

But I looked at their depth chart and signings fairly detailed the other day when I made a post about why McClain would likely be there when we pick. They’re already pretty shallow and nobody really sticks out as a diamond in the rough. They definately need new blood at LB, it’s just that I think they need to protect their investment in Cassell before he dies.

My position is that Pioli moves back to draft an OT later in the round and uses the 2nd round pick that he gained on an ILB or perhaps even another OT. But if he can’t move back, he might just make the reach for McClain figuring that there’s a bigger drop off past him than past Okung. Just opinions of course, I’m getting impatient to see some free agency moves and combine times (just to see how the boards start to shake out).

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Feb 9, 2010 5:15 PM MST up reply actions

They do have a need there I agree

& you may be right about them taking McClain. I live in the middle of Chef’s kingdom, & get to see way more of their news than should be legal (LOL ). They really like the home boy, Weatherspoon. My gut feeling is that they will aim for him in the 2nd, & take an OT in the 1st.
But then again, MSM is about the same everywhere.

by rg2247 on Feb 9, 2010 8:07 PM MST up reply actions

I'm glad to hear they like Weatherspoon

I’m also of the mind set that they protect Cassel with their first round pick – before one mistake (paying him so much and trading for him after only a single season when McDaniels made him look like Drew Brees) becomes another (getting him killed). I certainly hope so.

I just want McClain like others want a QB, I just really think he’s the absolute poster boy of what we want on our team. He’ll quarterbck the front seven within a year and take the overall leadership baton from Dawk when that man gets good and ready to retire. Rolando plays with intensity but he could learn the ‘mean’ and learn to ‘want to’ lay the wood from Dawk. Gots to have him

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Feb 9, 2010 10:28 PM MST up reply actions

I do think drafting Okung would be big for the Chiefs

If you look at it if we where to draft Okung (chiefs fan) we would be able to fix two spots on the line. We can put Okung where Albert is and put him back on the inside where he belongs and then we would have a pretty solid line.

by tomahawk44 on Feb 10, 2010 7:10 AM MST up reply actions

Well I'm surely hoping Okung is the pick

But if Shanny and the Skins don’t pick a QB at #4, it’ll almost surely be Okung. There’s also a possibility that the Lions take Okung over McCoy at #2. If Okung is gone when KC picks at #5, we agree that they’ll likely try to move back. If that doesn’t happen either, then all bets are off and McClain is as much of a possibility, if not more, as anybody.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Feb 10, 2010 10:39 AM MST up reply actions

Completely Agree

What do you think about Berry? Do you think he can make it too number 5? I would want to take the chance on McClain at 5 if him or Okung doesnt drop.

by tomahawk44 on Feb 10, 2010 10:55 AM MST up reply actions

I think we'd all love to have a guy like Berry

He’s got it all, maybe a hair short, but certainly an elite top-five prospect, perhaps top three. He brings the pain and shows terrific ball-hawking insticts and overall football smarts. A perfect combination.

I think that who the Rams pick will decide whether he is there when you guys pick. If the Rams pick Claussen, then Detroit picks either Suh or Okung, then the Bucs pick either Suh or McCoy. But if the Rams take Suh, and Detroit takes McCoy (which is the way at least falf respctable mocks have it shaking out), then the Bucs will most likely grab Berry.

If the Bucs don’t take Berry, he’ll likely be there at #5 or beyond, even though he’s more skilled than that. In short, the Bucs are the only team I see as a potential taker of Berry before KC. So he could very likely end up as a great value there.

I still think if I’m Pioli and Okung is on the board, I’ve got to take him even over a higher rated prospect in Berry.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Feb 10, 2010 12:04 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah I could see Pioli passing on him and getting Okung

and if Berry was still there he would have a big possibility of trading out because a lot of teams will be wanting him

by tomahawk44 on Feb 10, 2010 12:16 PM MST up reply actions

Interesting note

I’ve been hearing through unnamed team sources that the raiders may part ways with RFA ILB Kirk Morrison. The same sources say they are very high on McClain.

See what i did there I passed off my bullshit rumor as legit by adding unnamed sources. In all seriousness though McClain could end up there as well.
