Doom for Peppers?
I think that the Broncos number one priority this off-season should be resigning Elvis Dumervil to a healthy long term contract. But negotiations defeinately don't seem to be moving forward and Julius Peppers has once again experessed his interest in leaving Carolina and wanting to play OLB in a 3-4 as opoosed to a 4-3 DE. He had expressed interest in going to New England last year, and seeing how we are running a similar system, I would imagine he could be pursuaded to play here. Now comes the question, if you could trade straight up for Peppers and have to give up Doom, would you do it, assuming that contracts could be worked out. The question comes what value does Doom give you over Peppers. Doom obviously is younger and has room to improve, but Peppers is the more complete player and is far better holding the point of attack. He also can beat double teams and demands constant attention from the opposing offense, helping free up other players. Doom needs to have a defense structured so he can get one on one match-ups in order to be effective and he is still a liability in the run defense. So would you do it.

No
If u actually watch him in run support, he holds the edge well. Thats wat are OLBs are asked to do, and he does that fine. So that, along with his superb pass rush=
NO WAY IN HELL
Good topic for discussion tho
I would keep Doom
I think Doom is a team guy. Peppers is a me guy. Thats enough proof for me.
no
but i wouild sign peppers as a free agant
okay i have cereal palsy arhrtis and chronic fatiue as well i have a grea life loveing folks some days are better that other days i got a make a wish in 2001 saw my favorive team the broncos was the trip of the lifetime i wish everyone couild gotten to enjoy that with me i know some of u hate the broncos and that ok but i bleed organ and bule reseident broncos fan for ap lol denver will rise again resident broncos fan for every blog resident broncos fan for stanpleid bule
I say no because
Doom is 25 and learning, current pro-bowler.
Peppers is over 30, never played in a 3-4, and no better than Holliday.
NAH, I say no
Well, I think Carolina would probably franchise him anyways
Maybe not, but even UFA can be franchised, Peyton Manning is an UFA, but there is no way in hell anyone but the Colts resign him.

Doubtful
He’s already been franchised twice, so if they do something again it’s going to cost them around $20 million

Yeah Peppers was like 17% of their total payroll last year. They franchise him for the third year in a row and he gets another 20% pay increase. They can’t do it. Nobody would trade for him AND take over a $20M/year lineman. Peppers walks clean.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
Makes 0 sense.
If we don’t pony up the big bucks for Doom, why would we spend more on a guy who was peeved that Carolina wanted to make him the highest paid defensive player by ONLY a slight margin. Why?
I think that Peppers is a better player (IMO) than Doom
Doom is a great team guy and I would want him here long term, but if we can’t work out a long term deal then I would be intrigued with having Peppers on the team in place of Doom for 4 years or so.

No to Peppers, he'll demand too much money for his worth.
Carolina will have to suffer with him, Dumervil isn’t going anywhere.

Pepper's stated he wants to play in a 3-4
But does he have the skillset to play our scheme effectively ??? I wanted to Marry a rich woman, but you know what they say about wish in one hand, & !@#$% in the other !!!!
haha

Value
This couldn’t be a straight up trade.
Doom has much more value on the open market than Peppers does.
Doom’s performace (as a pure pass rusher) is up and to the right with upside. Peppers’ is inconsistent and he’s getting old (and cranky).
I can’t imagine Denver would trade Doom for anything less than an early round draft pick.
Peppers would cost zero draft resources
Doom could fetch much in the open market.
So what if you could lure Peppers over to give him the chance he’s been wanting in the 3-4? He might be willing to take a bigger pay cut. So if he were to take five years for $14M per, would it then be wise to trade Doom?
Peppers would cost more, but with Peppers replacing Doom would fetch us crucial resources.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
I have a hard time giving up the NFL sack leader for a player who has never played the position we're bringing him in to play.
I like Peppers, but see it similar to the BM problem. I don’t think you give up Pro Bowl talent for unproven draft picks/players. The difference is BM is potentially a cancer. Doom is a team player and role model and I see no reason to get rid of him. I don’t mean to say Peppers is unproven, but he has not played OLB in a 3-4, and has been known to take plays off. I can see the draw here, but vote no.
You have a point that Peppers hasn't played the 34, but neither had Doom until last year
I don’t think you give up Pro Bowl talent for unproven draft picks/players.
I think the deal would be controversial to say the least. But if you could Peppers here for no draft picks (nearly a certainty) and for less than $15M per year (maybe/probable/I have no clue at this time)… I would trade Doom in a minute. That may not be popular to do, but if I’m GM for a day, and have a way to replace Doom with Peppers for a financially viable cost and gain a 1st & 3rd (or more)… I pull the trigger without blinking.
It just makes too much sense.

Doom then
is younger, with one more year of experience in the 3-4 than Peppers, and we can probably get him for cheaper than Peppers. That’s three strikes against Peppers. Also, IMO Dumervil fits the mold for a 3-4 OLB quite well, while Peppers is the prototypical 4-3 DE.

The Hanging Curve
All valid points
It’s worth noting, though, that Peppers is only 10 pounds heavier than our 1st round pick Ayers. Plus, at a taller 6’7, the weight is distributed very well.
All I’m saying is the guy wants to be in a 3-4. He’s wanted the challenge for years. I have no reason to believe that this freak of nature wouldn’t put in double time in learning how to put the QB on his back from another position. And if you can get that done while throwing in some high draft picks to upgrade other roster positions with, then I certainly think it’s something you look at doing.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
You could even keep Doom into training camp
to decide how well it’s going to work. If you need Doom you could keep him. If Peppers is working out as thought, you could then make the move after spending so much time fielding offers and tenders.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
I don't disagree strongly with you elvisalex.... Just slightly....
While Doom hadn’t played 3-4 until last year, he does have one year and has shown he is more than capable. Peppers would be a risk for sure. I do like the idea of having Peppers and picks over Doom, however, I think you have to take care of your good players to both create an environment that players want to be a part of, and also limit player turnover. Players gelling together is such a huge part of any scheme in my opinion.
Yeah, I can't argue with any of that
Let’s say in a crazy world, all our main guys are re-signed except for Doom, meaning Kyle, Brandon, Kuper, Prater all come back and sign long-term deals… but that we find we can afford Peppers and get a 1st and 2nd rounder for Doom. I don’t think that would look bad in the locker room. And I don’t think it’s too far fetched.
Another option might be to try and keep Doom under tender for a year to help assist Peppers in the transition/hedge our bets. I don’t care that Peppers has never done it, I just think it would be an absolute nightmare to have them both moving around just wrecking havoc on defenses.
Sadly, though, I’m pretty sure this is all a pipe dream. Don’t really see bringing in Peppers as financially viable. Doom would be much cheaper.

Won't happen because of $
but if we were able to get him on a discount, why not send Jarvis Moss and some late round pick? Dumervil cannot be traded – if anything, he ought to be the first RFA signed by the Broncos.

I could see Peppers
signing with the Patriots or another Super Bowl type contending team for less than the $20 Million price tag. Since he has had 2 seasons of huge contracts, I feel that he would sign for less if it gave him a chance for a ring. I’m not so sure he fits in fincially with the Broncos, but having him AND Doom would be terrific.

It's nice to think about...
But I think the money tied up between them and Ayers would be way too much for one position. Perhaps an Ayers move to DE, but I think he’s a little small for that. I’ve loved Peppers since he came out of college, but I don’t see him being worth the money when we already have Doom.
no way
doom stays. he would have had about 30 sacks this season, if he wasn’t held on every other play. look at the film. doom is special, and still improving. character guy, leader,… this would be mcd’s biggest mistake, and his/our downfall. again, we need to add to the team, not subtract. peppers will be overpaid wherever he ends up. period.

if you can get peppers while keeping doom, I'm all for it
but there’s no need to get rid of doom here
