Who IS affordable?
This post is a little different from posts I've done in the past, as it's really just more of a question.
Affordability. We've all been talking and mocking for weeks now about FA moves, trades, and signings. I think we're all working on the assumption of an uncapped year. So with no cap numbers to worry about and no dead money to factor in... what's our payroll look like right now? Actual cash flow. What was the average of actual cash paid out last year? What does it average? More importantly, where is a good place to look at these types of things, contract structures, etc..
It's pretty hard to even make an educated guess at who we sign/resign if we don't have a target number to look at. We're looking at extending some key guys who are going to want tens of millions in guarantees and up front bonuses. I'm hoping someone can point me in a direction so I can start learning about some of these numbers.

My understanding is that Denver should have alot of money free up from last year in terms of the cap.
There were dead deals to players like Travis Henry still on the books.
All this gets wiped away with no CBA. But I also think that Bowlen isn’t happy with status quo. If he was he would have kept Shanny and not paid him to get a tan.
It is easy in my mind who we need.
1. Eugene Amano – Guard/Center – FA Tennesse. He could play 2 positions that we need a upgrade. He is my 1 key addition.
2. Ryan Pickett – 6’2" 345lbs NT from Green Bay – there has been talks with Green Bay but nothing has happened yet. I would love to see him in Denver. But not so likely.
3. Dwan Pickett – 6’3" 300lbs DE from Baltimore – we need upgrade over Peterson/McBean.
Give me 2 out of 3 of those or all 3 and I would be STOKED.
I've been on the Pickett caboose for many moons
I’ve always considered him priority #1 in outside free agency, even after GB said they want to resign him. Regardless of what they say, I don’t think they can give him a long term deal with Raji already locked into top-ten money at the position. And the top eight teams are handcuffed in free agency due the final eight rule, making suitors at least a little more thinned. I’d like Amano also. Don’t really know anything about Dwan Pickett.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
I don't know about an upgrade over Peterson/McBean,
but I would take Pickett and release Le Kevin Smith. Let’s all remember Chris Baker is just 22 years old and has a lot to learn. If we get Ryan Pickett then Thomas would have to go IMO.
Chris Baker would probably stay
Marcus Thomas was really used as a 3rd down NT, and if im not mistaken, an occasaional 3-4 DE, where many think he is better suited for. IMO, We hav 2 tru NT’s on the roster, and 3 is probably most perferable
the pickett de-fence ?
cool. c/g, nt, real de. just what we need, similar to last year. which means it’s highly unlikely, unfortunately. your right, though, good selections.
taste my blitzkrieg!
2009-year of the defense
Alex...You may want o check w/ KK...I think that he did some work on contracts/cap numbers/bonus money etc. this past off-season
-Stick to the fight when you are hardest hit - it's when things seem worst that you must not quit!
Pickett
Its my understanding he wont be leaving GBAY anytime soon. He is their #1 priority in FA
You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?
You know where I wanna go? I'll tell you where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talking about a little place called Aspen
This is where our focus should be at right now.
Good work. I can’t wait to see who we can get. Then mock drafts start to make a little more sense.

This is a question for all of the contract experts and pro-McNabb people
It is a question asked out of ignorance:
Assuming we could get McNabb for a song, how much of his 16.7 million dollar salary cap hit with Philadelphia would we have to absorb?
We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough
btw
I do realize there may not be a cap in 2010. So then the question becomes how much of his salary etc would we have to cover, and how would that affect our ability to address other areas?

I'm no expert, but I think the salary basically becomes whatever a potential new team agrees to
I see the $17M cap hit as a non-issue, as it sounds like you do.
Actual cash due him this year is a guaranteed $6.2M roster bonus due on May 5, and a $5M base sallary ($11.2M total). He’s set to be a free agent next year, though, and with a potential lockout looming, it’s likely that an aging QB would trade higher salary for security.
My GUESS, is that McNabb could be had for maybe 8-9 million per year for a three year deal.
I’m not hoping for McNabb in any way, but I’m hoping this strategy works similarly with Champ Bailey. His situation is very similar, 31 years old, set to be a free agent in a looming lockout year, $9.5M due for the ’10 season.

$65 million + available...
Is a rough guess. Assuming that payout( without “Dead Money” ) is about $50 million and a normal cap for next year would have been about $115 million, then $65 million is about what we have to spend.
So … then set aside funds for signing our present free agents, and then an amount to cover paying draftee you are left with funds available for new free agents.
$65M would be great!
I fear, however, that when people refer to the ‘dead money’, that it’s actually money spread over multiple years, rather than having $40M in dead money per cap year. Just a guess, haven’t gotten that far yet. Thanks for the response!

EA, Here is some posts I did on

I hope this helps you.

Thank you Kirk
I remember enjoying your CBA series very much! I actually found sites that contain the contract information I was looking for. I’ve been working on a spreadsheet when time permits. I’ll post my findings for anybody interested in the next day or so.
I assume you’ve posted charts before? Are there any tricks I’ll need to know, or is it pretty self explanitory?
Thanks again for the links!

So Kaptain,
would it be a financially reasonable scenario to hope that the broncos sign these FA’s?
resign:
Dumervil
Marshall
Prater
Orton
Kuper
new Fa’s:
ILB Karlos Dansby
G/C Eugene Amano
WR Lee evans or WR Kevin Walter (evans being the preference, in my book)
and either or borth of: DE Dwan Edwards or NT Ryan Pickett

what does everyone think?
I think this plus a draft that includes:
1st round after trading down— LG Mike Iupati
2nd round — C Markice Pouncey
3rd round - a CB- 5-tech. DE Alex Carrington
3rd round (one of these 3rd’s would be from the trade down)
along with hopefully RB Legarrette Blount and an ILB in the 4-5th round territory
could make us a championship contender right now. thoughts?

dkn why the slashed text... didn't mean to do that...
by bailey disciple on Feb 10, 2010 4:51 PM MST up reply actions
I was busy answering your question on the ST's post
I think it is reasonable to resign all of our FA’s. With the Dead Cap Money that disappears, their should be enough in the budget. I am basing my premise that even if there is no CBA change, the Broncos would spend at least what they have done in the past. It may be less(with the economy), but certainly won’t be more.
As for your second idea, I would love to get Iupati and Pouncey. I don’t think we need to select Blount, but I’m sure I will be surprised at the selections that McX makes.
And the slashed text happens when you use a dash. Either put a space between the dash and the words, or don’t. The crossed out text happens when you have a space between one word and not the other. The best way to eliminate errors is to use the “Preview” button.

Don't necessarily disagree with the FA pickups
but man….where’s the love for McBean? IMO his true value was evident when he was out of the line up. I think it may have coincided with the losing streak.
The QB position is set.
I agree
McBean played very well should keep his starting position. the DE pickups are to replace peterson as a starter and provide some depth.
