The Official Nickname for Our New Defensive Line

Let this be the official nickname voting for our new defensive line, which includes Jarvis Green, Jamal Williams, and Justin Bannan.  Combined, these guys are costing the Broncos a pretty penny in 2010, but it's no doubt that if they perform as expected, our defense will likely rise to its early 2009 form--and stay there this time.

These three signings give us arguably the best 3-4 defensive line rotation in the NFL.  Behind these three are McBean, Fields, and Peterson, or the starting lineup from 2009.  Behind them are Marcus Thomas, Chris Baker, Everette Pedescleaux, , and Carlton Powell

Out of that list, I'd love to see Thomas, Baker, and Powell on the roster at some capacity, which means sacrifices might need to be made elsewhere.

Anywho, our starting D-line is probably the best we've had since the Browncos helped us to one of the NFL's most dominant defenses from 2005-06.  These acquisitions make the defensive backfield even stronger (can that be?) than it was in 2009, and they make our linebackers that much more effective in run support.

I would like to open the bidding by suggesting "The J-Wall".  I know the word "wall" is quite cliche for a defensive line nickname, and I expect the creative minds here at MHR to trump this nickname, but there's where we'll start the bidding.  (By the way, in case you don't get "J-wall", our starting line is Jarvis, Jamal, and Justin.)

i dunno the problem is that a lot of people call jamal williams “J-wall” on his own when i was looking to see how pissed they were that he was leaving

by black_knight101 on Mar 10, 2010 7:25 AM MST reply actions

makes sense

you could also call him “J-Will”

Will be tough to nickname them J-Wall

since these three players will more than likely not be on the field at the same time.

by Adam Manter on Mar 10, 2010 8:01 AM MST reply actions

Well, not too sure about your assessment of the D-line

Green and Bannan are role players and not dominate, Williams if healthy can be a dominate guy, but that is a big if since he hasn’t been for two years. All of these guys are past 30. I would take the Patriots line right now or the Steelers over ours, even Dallas probably has a better combination.

Maybe call them Generation Grey as in they are old.

Regardless of whether you turn out to be right, that two or maybe three teams have a better comination than we have...

It’s still pretty apparent that McX sees these guys as significant upgrades. Aside from Dawk and Goodman last year, I believe each of our FA signings were for under $3M per year. In fact, most of them were right at $2.5M per year.

Of all free agent signings last year, only Goodman received more than $7.2M guaranteed. In contrast, all three of these linemen will be making more than $4M per year and all were guaranteed $7M or more. In fact, Bannan was guaranteed more money than any McDaniels signing, ever.

So again, regardless of who is correct here, it appears that the FO sides with Sayre. I also agree. I think you great greatly underrate Bannan, and I also think most peers and pundits overstate Williams’ injury risk going forward.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

The Geriatric Divide

Unlike some here, I think that folks are overstating the issue of age here. Technological advances in medicine and physical therapy have allowed players to play well into their 30s, and now some into their 40s. Think about how far micorfracture surgery has come since the turn of the century. It used to be that players going through that procedure would take almost a full year to recover, and now players are recovering faster, and healing better, than they did before. Even ACL injuries are becoming less of a factor in how players rehab.
I think that we may get, at the least, 2 years of great service out of these players. That is all dependant on if they re-injure themselves, though. With good rotation, and even better coaching, we should maximize these new aquisitions, and our defense is only going to be the better for it.

I don't know about just the DL, but one for our whole defense:

Quondam-Glory Gamble.

A fancy way of saying “formery-glory opportunity/risk/adventure”

I wasn’t really sure about the last word, as I see them as a veteran presense and team state-of-mind influence. They are helping establish McDaniel’s definition of Team, but at the same time, are giving us a shot at winning. I guess I might say an “Educated Risk that has long term benefits at the very least”

I think of the DL

we have on the roster right now 8 will make the final 53. My nickname would be “The Great 8 Wall”.

There will be a lot of substitutions. I would like to see another good NT to be groomed on PS this year because of the fact I don’t think JWilliams has much left. Rotational for 3 years at best. It would have to be a late round NT so he won’t get stolen off the PS. Or we just hide him with an injury or something.
Jarvis Green, Jamal Williams,Justin Bannan, Ryan McBean, Ronald Fields, Marcus Thomas, Chris Baker, Everette Pedescleaux, , and Carlton Powell. Either Powell or Pedescleaux will have to be hid again somehow or cut. Or maybe trade Thomas if he has value.
