Broncos release Kenny Peterson, waive G Mitch Erickson
CBS4's Vic Lombardi just reported via Twitter that the Broncos have released DE Kenny Peterson. The team also parted ways with G Mitch Erickson.
Peterson, an eighth-year defensive lineman who joined the club as a free agent on Nov. 13, 2007, totaled 94 tackles (60 solo), including five sacks, in 42 games (15 starts) with the Broncos. His signature play in 2009 was a sack of Ben Roethlisberger. He forced a fumble on the play, which was recovered by Robert Ayers and returned 54 yards for a touchdown.
Peterson went to the same high school as Broncos HC Josh McDaniels, Canton McKinley. Peterson attended Ohio State and was a former 3rd Round pick of the Green Bay Packers.
Erickson was signed before the 2008 season as a college free agent and spent the past two seasons on the team's practice squad.

anyone who broke down tape from Jamal Charles' handling of our front 7 knew this was coming.
he was clearly a weak link

really?
I thought Davis played well. most of the long runs were to the weakside, or strongside runs cut back into DJ’s lane. I thought DJ was out of position more than Davis.

Called It.
Peterson was a no show towards the end of the season. All the teams would just run at him and get yards.
Quick question about the title...
Is there any difference between releasing a player and waiving a player?
Waiving a player
signifies that they would take him back with a new contract at a lower pay rate, such as to placing them on the Practice Squad. Releasing a player pretty much tells everyone that the team is done with him, and doesn’t want him back.

See below
If he makes it past the 24 Hour waiver wire, he can be re-signed. The contract that he had is null and void. If the team wants him back he would have no choice but to take a pay cut since no one claimed him. That would be the case if a team needed the roster spot.

straw man
Any player cut (waived or released) can be resigned to his original club. If a guy has less than 4 years in the league, he goes to waivers if cut. If the player has more than 4 years he doesnt.
It has nothing to do with if “the team wants him back”. Its simply a matter of if he’s considered a vet by the CBA.
Ok
It could be an indicator though.
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
Nope
A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent’s position.1 To “attack a straw man” is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by substituting a superficially similar proposition (the “straw man”), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.

usually, released vets are vested and waived players are not vested (depends on time of year)
http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8085ee3e&template=with-video&confirm=true
1. What is the difference between waived, cut and released?
All three terms are synonyms for termination of employment. The number of years of service in the NFL and the time of year has a lot to do with each term as it relates to individual players. A vested veteran player with four years of service will be handled differently from a player with less years of service. Keep in mind football does not have recallable waivers like the business model baseball works under.
Waived: A non-vested player (less than four years of service) who is terminated goes through waivers. When he is released another team can claim him within a certain period of time. A vested veteran only goes through the waiver system from the trading deadline in midseason through the end of the season. During the offseason and all the way up to the trading deadline, a vested veteran gets released.
Released: A vested veteran is free when he is terminated and can sign with any club. Keep in mind, if the termination takes place between the end of the trading deadline and the end of the calendar year, the player goes through waivers. A vested veteran released this time of year is free to sign with any team. For example, Duane Starks was terminated last week and he was not subjected to the waiver system.
Cut: Is an unofficial term for being terminated and one of the above two categories applies.

Not really surprised by either move
290 lb G on PS for 2 years, too small for where we are going at G. No big loss.
With the recent additions on the DL, Peterson shouldn’t be missed too sorely.
I like
the strong sense of purpose and direction the Broncos are demonstrating in reshaping the roster. Last year felt fairly compromised, due to limited time and the vast changes required. This offseason we’re hitting the ground running. I expect to see a big impact once the season starts.

Thanks for the update Guru.
No surprise for me here, I like the move. I never had high hopes for Erickson.
Best of luck to Kenny, he’s a good guy and he did his best for us. Although, I fear he won’t be picked up by another team, could be the last we hear from him.
Going with this, I love what McX is doing so far in free agency. The veterans we had on the roster on the D-line to protect the youth we’re trying to bring along weren’t getting the job done. So, we bring along some solid veterans in free agency and will continue to bring along the youth, and possibly bring in another linemen in the draft. Terrific.
I am glad that those guys got released early. Gives them a better chance to land somewhere
Kenny was a good guy. I like those good character guys.
well you can't say McDaniels plays favorites with releasing Peterson
I’m sure he’d cut his brother off the staff too if it would improve the team.

The guy formerly known as ZAPPA
I predicted Peterson's 'demise' yesterday -- sadly
It does answer the question I posed to Papi: 7 DLs + 3 DLs – 1 DL = ?
There wasn’t room for all our DLs so L K Smith wasn’t going to be the only cut.
Erickson also had a problem that we’ve discussed in general but hadn’t applied to him. At 285 lbs. he wasn’t going to fit in the new power scheme.
no goats, no glory.
Indeed.
So this leaves us with Williams, Fields, Baker, McBean, Thomas, Green, and Bannan, along with a couple of longshots (J’Vonne Parker and somebody named Baraka Atkins). That’s a solid core of seven players, just the right amount for a D-line rotation. If there is a weak link in the group, it’s definitely Baker because of lack of playing time, but after that the group is very tightly knit.
I’m going to pose another question: do you think we would send Baker back to the practice squad in order to make room for a new rookie? I could definitely see us drafting someone like Dan Williams, Corey Wooton, Arthur Jones, Tyson Alualu, etc. This draft is a veritable buffet of 3-4 defensive line prospects compared to the few draft classes I’ve payed attention to in my few years of actually studying it, and I really wouldn’t like to see the Broncos miss out.
The way I see it there are two options for a rookie, and I’d like to see us do both. The first is to pick up a high-profile, high-reward long-term prospect in the first or second round like Williams (my favorite for 11 if you can’t tell) or Wooton. The second is to draft someone in a later round or sign a college free agent. If someone like Vince Oghobaase (sic) fell to us in round six, that would be ideal, but I would like to see us pick up a few more CFAs to compete with guys like Baker and Everette Pedescleaux in camp.
That would leave us with at least eleven (counting Atkins and Parker) D-Linemen heading into camp, out of which we could pick at most eight for our active roster. Fields, Williams, Other Williams, Bannan, Green, and McBean are locks. Thomas will probably make it. There’s our seven with our late round/CFA heading to the PS, so if we ended up in a place like that would Baker end up getting stuck back on the PS or is that too risky? And just how valuable is Baker?
Hey kiddies.... I have Internet candy in my van...
I don't believe papigrande
That the broncos could place Baker on the practice squad, becasue I believe that other teams could sign him off of the practice squad, so he wouldn’t be protected.
The jury is still out on Baker, basically becasue he was a rookie last year, and didn’t play. But I do believe he has a great deal of upside and size (6-3 326 lbs), and is cheap as a rookie free agent. I think you need to give this guy at least 2 more years to develope/play/show what he’s got before you give up on him.
by broncos314 on Mar 10, 2010 8:46 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
There must be something there
a. McD chose him as an UCFA.
and b. He was protected on the 53 man roster. That should be some indication, IMO.

good work on the roster math Papi
my count is the same as yours, 2 pure DL players to get us to camp, for a total of 11 primarily DLs (some of our OLBs can play DE, but this is ignored for this kind of roster math).
I have it broken down a little further however, and I have us at 4/4 for NT/DT, and 5/7 for DT/DE. I also did some overall need analysis, accounting for 2011 and 2012 projections and likely draft strengths, as well as 2010 and the likely draft strength of this year.
DT/DE is relatively solid in terms of fielding our 2010 53-man roster, but Thomas, McBean and Pedescleaux are all bubble type producers, and all have contracts running out next year, so we need to really be pushing them hard, which means high quality acquisitions, or else we could end up right back where we started. I have DE/DT as our 4th most likely pickup as the offseason continues, 4th most important roster addition (which is my measure for longterm positional health), 5th most likely draft addition, but 3rd highest “draft impact” ranking (a measure of how important it is to get one of the best at a position). It is also tied for 3rd in my draft projection where I kind of put all that together and rank likelihood of a player being drafted high (high as far as his position is considered) by the Broncos.
I expect we will go into the season with only 7 DL, but 8 may be just what the doctor ordered to get our defense into the top ten. Ideally, we should be able to go with 7, though, which just makes it all the more likely that we still are looking at adding DL impact as the offseason continues.
With 7 DL, I would expect that we can cement in Fields and Williams, Bannan and Green. Then we should see Baker in competition to force us to carry an extra NT if he has a great camp, but I don’t really see him in competition with anyone. If he is particularly stellar, Fields may be released, as he is a bit of a wildcard. If he is merely progressing very well, we may decide to keep 3 NTs on the 53. If he is struggling… I hate to think about that. We are up to 4 or 5 DL at this point. the final 2-3 spots will be battled out for by Parker (not likely), Pedescleaux (borderline), Thomas (bubble), McBean (bubble), and at least one draft pick (I would prefer a high pick on someone with the tools to impact immediately) and another addition, either draft, CFA, or an as yet unsigned FA.
My prediction for most likely (best even) scenario is a high draft pick (1st or 2nd) will make the team(1/8), the Broncos will carry 3 NT in Fields, Williams and Baker(4/8), Bannan and Green will be in for sure (6/8), and then in no particular order Thomas-New Addition-PDX-McBean. With us keeping one but likely two of them.
I like Thomas’ toolset, but if we are talking about him at NT, I think he doesn’t make it through camp. As a DT/DE, I think he is well suited, but the defensive limbo of the late Shannyassic period didn’t do anyone any favors, so I could see Thomas struggling to make the cut over the guys who were brought in specifically by McX. But my full disclosure is that I like Thomas’ toolset the best out of this bubble group. McBean is very inconsistent, a problem that has plagued him since college, so I could also see him not making the cut if the competition can be elevated.
In short, we agree on much, Papi, but my bubble guys (Thomas-McBean-PDX-NewGuy#2) will be battling it out for the last two to three spots. I leave Baker out of the equation because it feels like he is only reasonably competing against Fields, but the nature of that battle means he may be better described as competing with himself, and if he does well enough, the Broncos will carry him. (And I agree that our NewGuy#2 will likely be a PS eligible guy, and I think PDX will be as well, so we have good options there with this particular training camp roster build).
Overall I like where we are, and if we can layer in a little bit young draft impact, I will like where we are going as well.

late Shannyassic period?
Wow. That’s funny. Thanks for the laugh first thing in the a.m., and I have to agree. Good analysis.
Thanks Styg
That was brilliant. i think I’m a little higher on Fields and McBean than you are, probably mostly because I’d like us to keep some youth in the D-Line. But it sure is a nice problem to have, though, having so many good players at a position that you don’t want to cut any of them.
Hey kiddies.... I have Internet candy in my van...
I like Fields
and I would say we can’t afford to release him, but if Baker is all that and a bag of chips, well…
This thought process is predicated on the idea that most 3-4 teams rarely carry more than two NTs, though they may keep a developmental one. I’m torn between Colinki’s observation below that no team drafted him, and the idea that he has had a year of experience with a top 3-4 DL coach. I don’t think the PS is a safe place for Baker, and his time on the 53 last year seems to support that (though Thomas at NT was a sort of mixed review).

re: Baker to PS
I don’t have a feeling yet on who we’d keep. Injuries often cull the group and make a decision unnecessary.
It’s possible that we’ll be able to use Moss’ OLB spot. We can clearly get better on the DL even though it results in some painful decisions. Baker — despite our fondness for him — has a built-in advantage in that many teams deemed him as not worthy of drafting. I don’t think we have any untouchables so anything is possible. Despite what I said, the vets are vulnerable, too.
Re: Atkins. He’s an OLB/DE. I see 7 — L-DE: Bannan, McBean; NT: Fields, Williams, Baker; R-DE: Green, Thomas. And they could still re-sign Holliday because of his pass rushing skills. I admit to be stumped on this. Going with your thought, I see that DraftTek has us taking Clifton Geathers in the 7th, so maybe that’s the way to go — keep re-stocking with marginal players and hope that you can hold on to some. And that describes Baker, too, unless he shows himself to be more valuable.
no goats, no glory.
just looking at Geathers' combine measurements
6074 299 4.98 37¾ 11⅛ 26 — DraftCountdown
I think a pass rusher in the mix is still essential but the blue-collar grinders are perfect for the 3-4. Throw in an Oghobaase or a Deaderick and try to develop them.
no goats, no glory.
sooner than expected
but why delay the inevitable…

Interesting
we were having a discussion about this earlier today in the Vic and Gary chatroom over at their website, which D-linemen would make it.
I’m not quite sure what to think about that article on the Fox31 website by Josina Anderson about ‘The Path to Peterson’s Release’. Why does everything she write looks like trying to stir up controversy? I don’t know..
Anyway, I trust the organization in their decisions, so we’ll see what happens.

I think
This is a bad sign for the rest of the d-line from last year, and I’m happy with it. I know a lot of people blame the LB for our problems with the run last year and being out of position. But I’ve always put the blame on Peterson.
I can’t imagine have cut him that anyone else who was on the d-line last year or couldn’t even crack it can feel very comfortable about having a slot on the team next year.
At this point I think even Thomas has shown his upside, I’m all for patience with young guys but sometimes when a guy hasn’t stepped up after this long you just have to cut bait. The thing that helps him is that he’s young and cheap.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they worked out some kind of trade for fields to Miami.
Somewhat surprised by Peterson getting axed
But it makes a lot more sense, Peterson upside is virtually zero, the rest of the players could develop and have some upside, depending on the draft, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Fields is gone before trainig camp.
