a mock for me

here is a mock that i find plausible and in my eyes very satisfying.

for this specific mock i will be using the rankings from nfl.draftsite.com along with their player profiles when available.

a large question mark is still Brandon Marshall.  I think that it will be interesting how this plays out and could certainly see him coming to a deal and trade with Seattle for that 14th pick before draft day.  (side note:  wouldn't it be interesting if during the draft, a player slips to that 14th spot and McD calls up Seattle and tells them to draft someone and then trade Marshall for them)  Although other interested parties might surface, I am going to assume that keep Marshall for the sake of this draft

this will pretty different from my previous mock drafts, and despite it being a deep draft i do not think we will accumulate nearly as many picks as i have seen (or would ideally have).  I believe that trading down is a direction that we could go, and certainly would try to, but in case we get no suitors i would go this way:

Star-divide

 Predraft-

Denver signs ILBKirk Morrison to an offer sheet, ballpark of 3yr/18mil, unmatched by Oakland and we send them our 3rd round pick.

  Philiprivers_medium
I have been pushing for Morrison since he was foolishly tendered to original round compensation by the Raiders.  From the last post i laid out on the issue it seems to fall on mixed ears.  For those who don't like him or or don't want to do business with the Raiders I would have to say that he is very much worth a 3rd round pick.  He has played very well in Oakland and is is sure fire tackler.  Has led Oakland with 634 total tackles over the last 5 years.  Oakland wants him out and we have a void to fill.  I see taking Morrison in his prime as far less of a risk than an ILB in the draft (especially one taken in the 3rd round). (For those of you that hate this than say we don't do it and take Pat Angerer from Iowa with the same pick)

Denver trades TE Tony Scheffler to the New York Jets for QB Kevin O'Connel and their 5th round pick (from Philly (157ish))

Sp0815_o_connell_08-15-08_1db7ubh1_medium

O'Connell is another player that i have been an advocate for this offseason.   He makes sense in what we are doing here.  He is 6'5" andweighs in at 250lbs.  He has a concept of the New England type system that is imposed here.  Don't get me wrong, i still like Orton to be our starter and think that he earned as much this past season, but O'Connell is smart and is a leader.  He was a 4-year team captain in college at San Diego State and for those of you who seem to like the mobile aspect of a QB, he ranked first in school history in career rushing yards and second in career rushing touchdowns among quarterbacks; in 2007 he led the team in rushing yards.  I would take him over another flyer in the 6th or 7th round for sure.  As for the trade, The Jets would ultimately be giving up a 5th roundpick, since they will not be keeping O'Connell as part of any final roster, but this way we don't have to fight any other possible suitors.  They in return would be getting a very good receiving TE to play along side Dustin Keller, who has not fully lived into the role he was drafted in the 1st round to fill.

Denver holds the following picks:

1st - 11

2nd - 45

3rd - none

4th - 115ish

5th - 157ish

6th 186ish

7th - 224ish

As we saw last offseason, bringing in players in free agency almost guarantees that we go for youth in that position through the draft.  Bring in Buck, draft Moreno.  Dawkins and Hill, draft some safeties, Goodman, take Phonz, and so on.  McDaniels, for the most part, does not want to force rookies onto the field.

With the 11th pick Denver takes Dan Williams, DT from Tennesse.  6'3" 312lbs

Dan-williams_medium

Tremendous run stopper who eats up space with his size. Very powerful - can bench press 500lbs. Chases well sideline to sideline but his hustle and work ethic are sometimes questioned. Disruptive despite double teams but not a great pass rusher. 3-4 nose tackle. Needs more explosion despite strength. Ran a 5.17 at the combine with 27 reps on the bench (225 lbs).

Jamal Williams will be the primary NT this upcoming season, at least.  Dan Williams will be groomed and be played situationally barring injury to others.

With the 45th pick Denver takes Vladimir Ducasse, OG from Massachusetts.  6'4" 305lbs

Ducasse_medium

Reliable in run blocking, was above average size in FCS, has the agility to seal the edge, is quick enough to pull or trap. Pass protection needs improvement, is too upright, tendency to keep hands too low.

I am just going to go ahead and over read into the fact that we worked him.  I think that the 45th pick is a little high to take him, but he should be gone by our next pick (especially since i gave away our 3rd).  McDaniels will clearly jump on a player that they want based on soley his perceived value (Smith, Quinn...).  Ducasse will come into the mix with Kuper and Olsen to fill out that interior line.

With the 115th pick Denver takes Kyle Calloway, OT from Iowa.  6'7" 318lbs.

Rackmultipart

Versatile lineman who played 3 different positions in college. Solid run and pass blocker. Technically sound with good upside. Tough and physical. Had a DUI arrest in 2009 while on a moped.

Great tackle to add to the roster.  Still uncertain with Harris' recovery on the right side.  Polumbus sold very few on his skills last year as the drop off on talent was quite noticeable.  Calloway is versatile and could be used as depth in a number of positions on that line.  Go Hawks!

With the 157th pick Denver takes Ted Larsen, OC from North Carolina State.  6'2" 304lbs

Plnzomwbpwexqot

Versatile and inexperienced. Started college career as a DT. Good quickness a explosion. Hard worker with high upside. Good pass protector and run blocker but can be beat in space.

This is a tough position because of the drop off after Pouncey.  I like Eric Olsen if he was still sitting here but fear he will go late 4th.  Like Erik Cook in the 7th but think he may go undrafted at which point we sign him as a rookie free agent in addition to this pick.  For no i think that Seth Olsen will be our starting center next year, or possibly even Hamilton (blah!).  Larsen would be a one year project.  He needs to gain some weight andsome muscle.  It is not popular to use a stop gap while we wait on this guy to hopefully pan out, but after seeing how they worked with Olsen i see anyone besides Pouncey sitting a year to learn.

With the 186th pick Denver takes Kion Wilson, ILB from South Florida.  6'2" 239lbs.

Kion-wilson-p1_medium

Combines height, speed and size well, makes plays in the backfield, covers the middle well, fairly fluid hips give him good change of direction ability, tackling machine in the middle of the field. Lacks the ability to run a pro style defense, needs to learn coverages better, plays too much on instinct, sometimes over aggressive and gives up the big play because of it.

Kion would not be a starter, due to Morrison andWilliams being in front of him.  He would use those aggressive instincts on special teams immediately though andgive depth to a position where we could use some.  Given a year or two of molding he could turn into a usable asset for the team.

With the 224th pick Denver takes Javarris James, RB from Miami.  6'0"  211lbs

Um-james_medium

Strong runner and excellent receiver out of the backfield. Great in pass protection. Good short yardage back - always seems to fall forward for positive yardage. Quick feet, nice vision and shows good patience. Didn't put up impressive #'s in college andalways split time with other backs.

This is the type of player that i would want to compliment the backfield.  The fact the he can block makes him useful on special teams and even serviceable in two back or i-formation where he can stay in to pick up a blitz.  The fact that he is used to splitting carries and knows his role as a short yardage back is nice.  Last year he had 103 carries for 492 yards and 6 TDs.

So, thats the next couple months as i would like to see it played out.  I think that it adds depths and talent in the places that we want it.  I think that our weakest link would be at the center position, but i think that it will be filled as a stopgap by someone already on the roster, or maybe even the addition of Mawae for a year.

Dan Williams lifts 500 lbs WOW! Run 5.17/40 Impressive...

Chris Baker beat two guys up in the parking lot and ran a 4.9/40. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have 3 NT’s on the team, or better yet, we could play all three along the line. They’ll never run us then. Just kidding, great mock z

by bfree2bronc on Mar 12, 2010 10:07 PM MST reply actions

for sure

i hope baker pans out, but there is a reason that he rarely saw the field, hopefully another offseason of workouts will show us something else in his game and we can utilize him more. Like i said, I want Dan Williams learning for a year. So if Baker does work out then next year we let Jamal Williams go and have Williams and Baker

I like the reasoning

about the FA and drafting the same position. I can also see the reasoning about the draft day trade. Good thinking zclaro.

I don't want a C

that will sit a year. It has been said we have a C in Olsen. I’m not so sure. If we have one in house I think it may be Fry or McChesney. Anyway Great mock. Still love the O’Connell thing. Sure ends up short and a big gap between picks when you get Morrison for a third. That is a steal. Calloway better not end up like Gallery. An expensive G.

by Digger24 on Mar 12, 2010 10:22 PM MST reply actions

i know on Calloway

I watch a lot of Hawkeye football and think that he can at least hold his on at the position. It would hopefully be a moot point if we can keep Clady and Harris healthy, but this last year showed us that we need depth.
Yea i am not sure about Olsen at C. Hamilton is still around if we need it and Mawae is still available. I just dont see any center besides Pouncey being shoved into to start right away, and i still think McD would prefer to sit him a while to learn if he had the option

Some good reasoning there.

Like yourself, I think Morrison would be a great fit at a good age. I’m still perplexed about the release of Andra Davis – not so much because of his ability – but rather the timing of it. As I’ve said on other posts, I always view the draft as a lucky dip, and best way to go into it is to have as many bases covered as possible, to allow you to, in effect, go for the cliched “best player available”. Now that sounds a bit blase, but there’s a lot of truth in it. If, having released Davis, we go into the draft targetting someone like Rolando McClain, our hand is revealed, and like any good poker player, the other teams will use this to their advantage. Knowledge is power as they say, and if another team drafting just above or below you, knows your draftboard, then they can up the ante on you in the hope that you may have to concede something to them (another draft pick?) to secure your prize. So, yes, the Davis move surprised me, but as I said, more out of the timing of it than anything else. I should add that Andra Davis should have been allowed to play out his second year in my opinion. I thought he performed at a high level all year. And don’t even get me started on bringing back LeKevin Smith – Le bloody waste of a roster space if you ask me…!

But back to your point. And it complements my theory perfectly. We bring in Morrison for a 3rd. A player in his prime, who knows the NFL already and even better, weakens a divisional rival. The alternative you might say is to keep the 3rd and possibly draft a Brandon Spikes or a Pat Angerer (is that a great name or what?). Then 2010 becomes a learning year with the other LBs around him having to make sure he knows where he is etc etc. With Morrison, that wouldn’t be the case. I think your proposal deserves a lot of consideration, especially given that he’s not a graybeard or anything. He and DJ could form quite an inside tandem.

And whilst I’m on, can I suggest a similar fate for our 4th round pick?? The Seahawks have tendered OG Rob Sims with a 4th round qualification. Like Morrison, he’s only 25 or 26, fits the bill of a bigger body that both lines seem intent on chasing, and is rated pretty highly by the likes of Kiper et al (not that that’s necessarily a good thing, I grant you!!).

Good to see people thinking outside the box. The only thing against yours and my approaches is that (reputedly) we are on the brink of one of the deepest drafts in the last 10-15 years, so people can validly argue that now is the time to restock and replenish our squad. It’s the choice that the front office has to make – free agency or the draft. I say use them both to work together. Keep your high picks (1s and 2s) and trade the others for players (a la Morrison and Sims) who can come in and contribute from Day One.

Nice post sir!

Rec'd Z...Love the O'Connell get, that would be awsome.

Not crazy about the Morrison move but your draft concept and selected players are well thought out and make a ton of sense…One of the better Mocks, well done!

I like most of the picks

Would rather see a WR in place of Larsen. We can sign Cook, or Thomas Austin as undrafted players to cover th OC position. Also think we should get another CB in the draft. Overall, I like your Scenario very much. Well thought out.

we have a ton of WR on the team

is something i dont think everyone realizes. Marhshall, Gaffney, Royal, Stokley, McKinley, Lloyd, Willis

This is alright

I like your Morrison and O’Connel moves more than anything, though. I am a fan of Ducasse, but what site lists him at 6’4" 305? I am not in favor of drafting Dan Williams unless we have two first round picks, but this is your mock not mine. Still, our offense doesn’t improve much at all with these picks. You got us a backup/third string QB, a potential starting guard, a backup center, a backup tackle, and a fifth string running back.

I know some people are overboard about improving the offense, but our offense was not good in 2009. That is where we are lacking at the moment. Still, I appreciate your efforts and I love reading mock drafts in the morning. It’s always great food for thought!

Shit Sayre!

When you break it down like that it doesn’t sound so good anymore. You did forget a starting ILB instead of a backup 3rd rounder. I don’t think the 1st round pick will be Dan Williams anymore either. It has to be an impact player. Where do we need the most impact? The run. We have to improve our run game. The 1st round pick will be used where McD sees fit to accomplish this. Kuper, Olsen and Ducasse in the middle will go a long way. Calloway as protection for if Harris is slow to heal. I guess my only question with this mock is, do we KNOW Olsen can play C?

by Digger24 on Mar 13, 2010 9:56 AM MST up reply actions

No

but we know Hochstein and Hamilton can

Hamilton’s as good as gone.

by higgyhoops12 on Mar 13, 2010 11:15 AM MST up reply actions

Effectively?

Hochstein played OK in 2009, and Hamilton was arguably our worst lineman.

went a lot off of last years patterns

granted i hope they draft a little different now that they are not rushed into scouting and the war room.
buy Sayre, last year we got ONE starting player, Moreno. The rest he did not rush onto the field.
This is a different system than was ran in the past, dont expect to to draft 10 starters right out of the gate.
And dont discount Morrison as a starter. He would be on the field and impactful instantly, versus a rookie ILB taken in the 3rd who would not see the field

Love the Morrison pickup

That was a move I really liked from this mock, but I think a lot on this site are overemphasizing the defensive side of the ball. We struggled against the run, and we’ve filled that hole at least for a year. We can look at that area for the long term in next year’s crop of players or somewhere outside of the first round. Cam Thomas is more of a fit for the 3-4 defense and so is Terrence Cody.

Dan Williams is coming from a Tampa 2 defense. Just because he has size doesn’t mean he can eat a double team. He seems better suited for an end in the 3-4 than the nose from what I have seen/heard from him. Just my opinion though. If we go defense in the first round I would much rather have a guy like McClain or Joe Haden, and I think right now Haden is looking like a serious possibility. I don’t and never have expected to draft ten starters right out of the gate, but unlike last year we might NEED some guys to step in and start.

Kevin O'Connell - a little history

He was drafted in the 3rd round in 08 by the Patriots, out of San Diego State. He was waived by the Patriots in late August, 2009. Patriots then went into the 09 season with just Tom Brady and a CFA rookie QB. Four teams tried to claim him off waivers – Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, and the Jets. Detroit got him because they had the worst record. A week later, Detroit traded him to the Jets for an undisclosed draft pick.
Giving up Sheffler (a pretty good tight end) for O’Connell and a fifth seems kind of steep to me.

All that you behold, though it appears without, it is within, in your imagination, of which this world of mortality is but a shadow...and one day you’ll awake and find that you’ve never lived and never died, except in the dream.

i dont think we get more than a 5th from anyone for scheffler, and if we dont get that i would not be all that surprised if we took less or even cut him

That's about what I think about Scheff also.

I think he is going to be an add on in a draft day trade that we are a little off point value wise. Cleveland signed Watson, so the Jets might be a good bet. He was aquired by the Jets as a ploy to include him in a trade for Marshall last year. Now he is 4th string for them behind Sanchez, Erik Ainge, Kellen Clemens. They also have Brad Smith playing in the Wildcat. He will be cut eventually, but if we want him the time to get him would be at or before the draft. The Jets owe Detroit their 7th round pick in 2011 for him. I would think if they could the equivilent of that back they would be happy.

by Digger24 on Mar 13, 2010 1:18 PM MST up reply actions

Why cut him?

When you can keep a talented player for another year at a very moderate price tag.

Are you

talking about O’Connell? The Jets have a full stable of young QBs. I just assume they will unload him somehow. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind next years 7th for him.

by Digger24 on Mar 13, 2010 1:52 PM MST up reply actions

Very good ideas!!!

Things I would be happy about.

1. Kirk Morrison = Starting ILB for 3rd = no brainer

2. Dan Williams = Big , young Dlineman to learn from Jamaal Williams = Great Pick

Things not sure on

1. Is Ducasse better than John Jerry? Jerry plays Guard in the SEC?

2. Ted Larsen Sucks!!!
