Who's No. 2?

We all know John Elway is the best quarterback to ever wear the orange and blue, that's a given. But who would be the second best? A few candidates come to mind.

Jake Plummer

via denver.rockymountainnews.com

Yes, old Jake "The Snake" Plummer would be in the mix. One of the more colorful characters in recent Broncos memory, he was the last quarterback to get us into the playoffs. Yet after reaching the AFC Championship game in 2005, he was benched midseason (after a 7-4 start) in favor of Jay Cutler, and we proceeded to win only two more games all season. In 2004 he set what was (at the time) the franchise record for single season passing yards with 4,089 and tied the franchise single season passing touchdown record of 27.

In his four years with the Broncos, Plummer totaled 11,631 passing yards, 78 touchdowns (71 passing, 7 rushing), 47 interceptions, and completed 59.2% of his passes.

Craig Morton

The only quarterback not named John Elway to lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl, Morton is also one of two quarterbacks (Kurt Warner is the other) to ever lead two different teams to the Super Bowl. He and Haven Moses made up the famous M & M Connection of the late 1970's.

In his six seasons with the Broncos, Morton totaled 11,895 passing yards, 80 total touchdowns (74 passing, 6 rushing), 65 interceptions, and completed 58.5% of his passes.

Charley Johnson

via assets.sbnation.com

Charley Johnson was one of the first relatively consistent quarterbacks for the Broncos. He helped end the constant controversies surrounding the position when he arrived in 1972.

In his four years with the Broncos, Johnson totaled 7,238 passing yards, 52 touchdowns (all passing), 52 interceptions, and completed 52.6% of his passes.

I voted for him only because I think I misread the ?

Did it mean 2nd best while at Denver or 2nd best QB that donned the orange and blue? De Berg got pushed out everywhere by someone better, but he was very good everywhere he went.

2nd best that donned the orange blue

But you’ve got some good points about DeBerg. Didn’t he end up getting replaced by 3 future Hall of Famers or something like that?

I've always liked Jake

I was only three when Elway was drafted, so I’ve never really looked back too much from that.

P.S. When I type the name Elway, it gets the red spell check line under it. We retired his jersey, you’d think we could get his name overridden in the spell checker =)

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

…ever heard of Kurt Warner?

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

Socrates was once executed for 'trolling'.
^Needs explaining: don't call someone asking uncomfortable, slightly antagonistic questions trolls. In all odds they probably just want to learn. It's real easy to differentiate a 'Socratic' post from a trolling one (unless you're a resident of WCG).
^Needs further explaining: I have yet to post anything on WCG, don't worry, I'm not trying to rationalize anything I've done. I've just lurked over there and man, they are the model of post-peloponnesian war Athens.

Woops!

Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll go fix that.

Shanny done us wrong and you all know it when he benched Jake!

He should of been concentrating on the defense’s gruddy play.

"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

Morton

Not a question in my mind……

Plummer

I don’t care what anyone else says, I am still a Plummer man. I don’t care about stats or mistakes, I care about leadership and wins… That is what Plummer brought to the table. Another reason I like Orton.

by Toonafeesh on Mar 14, 2010 12:03 AM MST reply actions

I voted for Plummer. He was pushed aside way too soon.

Lot of leadership skills. He made the team better.

He has the best W/L % of any Bronco QB. Says a lot.

IMO Morton came into a very good team that needed a QB. Red Miller took that defense and Morton to take us to the SB.

Kubiak

Greatest to not get a shot? Other than that, I’d say Plummer.

I was torn between Morton and Plummer...

But gave Jake the edge. He’s the only snake I’ve ever liked. :p

Plummer

It’s nice to see Jake getting some love. Shanny restrained him to much that final year, but oh well! You never know maybe Orton will be on this list some day.

Plummer all the way!

That left handed football flip only endeared me to the man. No sane man does something like that, and I like a little “crazy” in my QB. And lots of Ws.

One not mentioned but has a part of the start for the Denver Broncos...Frank Tripuka #18

He came in as an assistant coach and ended up playing 5 years. His number is retired by the broncos and he is the first quarterback to throw for 3000 yds in a season, back when a season was 11 games? That would equate to around 4500 yds today, especially when running was the norm.

# 18 on the Ring of Fame, Frank Tripucka

Started as a Bronco assistant coach the first year of the AFL. During a preseason game that first season he was inserted into a game due to problems at qb. Frank then went on to start for the next 4 years. Threw the first TD pass in the AFL history and is also the first pro qb to pass for 3,000 yds in a season.

by OCBronco on Mar 14, 2010 12:52 PM MDT reply actions

Ah, yes, Tripucka

Don’t know all that much about him personally, and for what its worth I hardly remember watching Elway play. Thanks for the input, I had no idea he was the first QB to throw for 3,000 yards in a season.
