Rumor: Jets putting package together for Marshall

Mike Lombardi from National Football Post writes:

I keep hearing from my Jets sources that they’re having internal discussions regarding Brandon Marshall and would love to put together a package of players that might entice the Broncos and still keep their first-round pick.

If this is the case, I wanted to research what the Jets could offer if they avoid their 1st rd pick:

DRAFT PICKS

Jets have as draft picks in the top 4 rds = #29(1srt rd), #61 (2nd rd), #121 (4th rd) - note they do not have a 3rd pick.

This leaves only the late 2nd rd and late 4th picks available for consideration (under the assumption they won't give upt their 1st rd).

PLAYERS OF POSSIBLE INTEREST TO BRONCOS

Starting C Nick Mangold (5th season) from Ohio St. 6'4" 305 lbs. Would be the top choice of a player package.  He would make the O-line stabilized for the next 5-7 years. Probablity of inclusion by Jets - low.

Acceptable Trade: Mangold and the 4th rd pick for Marshall.

Starting RG Brandon Moore from Illinois (8thseason - 29 yrs old). 6'3" 305 lbs.  A starting guard from the Jets O-line is better then anything we have right now. Probability of inclusion by Jets - medium.

Acceptable Trade: Moore and 2nd rd pick for Marshall and 6th rd pick.

Last year's 6th rd pick was OG Matt Slauson from Nebraska. 6'5" 315lbs.  Had a year to learn behind Alan Faneca which may be significant.  A year in the league also helps but not sure if he's even worth it.  Probability of inclusion Jets - high.

Acceptable Trade: Slauson, 2nd rd pick and 2011 2nd rd pick for Marshall

D Ferguson is not an option (Mangold was barely even considered one) here b/c the Jets would not include him at nearly any cost (a risk-free Marshall would not have made it it possible).

If no players are part of the package;

TRADE: 2nd rd pick and 4th rd pick for Marshall.  Which will never happen since Jets wont give up picks that will leave them with only a 1st then nothing until the 5th in this deep a draft.

Again, I know everyone thinks a 1st rd pick is mandatory for Marshall, but since no one really wants to give one up from what i can tell...the point is moot.  Analyzing picks and players is needed to get the best bang for the Marshall buck (no bad jokes about "bang" here, please).

Add David Harris to the mix

David Harris seemed to be a target of McDaniels last year when we were shopping Cutler. He is probably on the top of our wish list from a Jets player perspective.

I like Harris but

not sure he is able to be part of any deal where we dont give up our #11 pick for them to get McClain

by Orange and Blue on Mar 14, 2010 3:03 PM MDT up reply actions

That was my thought exactly!

When I read that article this morning, the only guy I thought of was Harris. I’d do that deal straight up. If they are looking to package players, I’d also seriously look at Clouney and a 2nd rounder.

I would and so would all the NYJ fans. They'd have a riot out there!

what if we got a pick too...

if only Dan Snyder owned the Jets…

I would trade Marshall for David Harris straight up...

But how about this crazy trade idea??

Broncos get:
David Harris, ILB
Nick Mangold, C, Ohio State
Kevin O’Connell, QB
4th or 5th round pick

Jets receive:
Brandon Marshall
1st round pick (11th overall)

I’m not sure the Jets would go for this, but I can dream, can’t I?!?! haha
We would get two proven players and a quarterback that coach McDaniels likes (NE drafted O’Connell when McD was still the o-coordinator). And New York apparently values first round draft picks because they aren’t willing to part with one to just outright sign Marshall so they can have the 11th overall pick…Not to mention we wouldn’t have to give all that guaranteed money to a rookie
I don’t know, this was more of me thinking out loud…I’m not even sure I want the Broncos to part with B-Marsh, but Harris and Mangold would definitely ease the pain…

How about...

Broncos get:
David Harris, ILB
Nick Mangold, C, Ohio State
Kevin O’Connell, QB

Jets receive:
Brandon Marshall
Tony Scheffler
1st round pick (11th overall)

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

Opps, 2nd rounder, not our 1st

Keller is their man

I dont think Scheffler interests them.

by Orange and Blue on Mar 14, 2010 3:01 PM MDT up reply actions

I like that trade idea a lot...

And its probably more realistic than mine…I was probably asking for too much and I didn’t even think about throwing Scheffler in there

by sjk7 on Mar 14, 2010 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

I would love Harris or Mangold

I really do see these guys still in play for BM, regardless of how vague actual knowledge is. Their team is virtually set… 1st ranked defense, 1st ranked passing defense, 1st ranked rushing offense… 31st passing offense.

What can you do to repair the passing offense? Well, they’re not changing out Sanchez. They’re not changing up their elite offensive line. They need receivers. Period. Why plural? Because they need a TE and WR.

Keller was horrible last year, Braylon can’t catch, and Sanchez was a rook. Sanchez will get better, but can they really hinge their SB run on standing pat with the same 31st ranked pass attack – on the hope that Sanchez turns the corer BY HIMSELF? Well, I wouldn’t.

I could see some sort of trade involving both Marshall and Scheffler to the Jets. One that could involve a guy like Harris or Mangold, and perhaps we take Edwards, too. The Jets don’t have time to draft a WR at #29 and HOPE he works out immediately. Regardless of Marshall’s off-field issues… they know he’s going to be a best friend and a solid go-to for Sanchez… without having to heave it deep. Marshall did it for three seasons, one of them with a new QB, system, and coaches all around… He can do it for the Jets, and they have to know it.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

elvisalex, this makes a ton of sense: they need both BM and Scheff.

The Jets have taken the time to develop their OL so their running game works. Then they brought in Sanchez at QB. Rex Ryan helped solidify the D. They simply need 2 more good receivers.

I wonder if this were a fiar trade for us: both BM and Scheff go to the Jets for David Harris and a 2nd pick this year? My excitement gets in the way of my judgment when we do this.

I doubt that they would breakup their OL by trading Mangold. It takes time for the OL to work together well. Theirs is pretty well oiled by now.

Great possibilities…. Nice post, O&B.

Tought to see

The Jets doing this, they are set in the running game, which is where the offense is focused, as well as defense. They already have a decent recieving core, and to take Marshall would upset the balance of how their offense is run. Plus the cost of what it would take to get Marshall to NY from Denver would be a bit high for them to take.

by Topher Doll on Mar 14, 2010 2:39 PM MDT reply actions

Marshall isn't a deep threat

You wouldn’t be asking Sanchez to start kicking out deep balls. Instead he’d have a great possession receiver, a really great one that can catch. It would keep the defenses honest. Braylon stretching the field and Sanchez to Brandon nickle and diming them. You couldn’t stop them if they achieved that balance. I agree that they run well, run first, and build around it. I don’t agree that any manager in the history of management would WANT to stand pat. I’m not saying they won’t, I’m saying they’ll at least try. If they can’t get Brandon, don’t you think they draft a WR in the 1st round anyway?

They know they have this problem. That’s why they traded for Edwards. They have to know it’s still a problem when they watched Edwards play and when they look at the overall passing stats.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

WAS FROM JAY GLAZER!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:10 PM MDT up reply actions

WHAT!!!!!!

I dont care what we gave up, but why Quinn? I guess we wont be drafting anyone in the end.

by Orange and Blue on Mar 14, 2010 3:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I guess

McD sees potential. If anyone can work with Quinn I think it’s McD and his brother. Let’s hope they start their magic

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Well anyway

They signed LT. This is a team to be given a lot of respect to. They have done a ton to improve last two yrs.
