Brandon Marshall to Jets talk not popular with Jets fans

Michael Lombardi of National Football Post started a bit of a firestorm this morning with the following, seemingly harmless comment, in his Sunday Diner column -

I keep hearing from my Jets sources that they’re having internal discussions regarding Brandon Marshall and would love to put together a package of players that might entice the Broncos and still keep their first-round pick.

That was it.  No rumors, no innuendo.  Just a simple 2 line statement of fact, so to speak.  I guess it goes without saying that several teams are likely having 'internal conversations' about Marshall and several other players.  That's what happens this time of year.

Still, just the fact that the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets were linked to Marshall again had the blogosphere - as well as Twitter-Land - a buzz.  Soon, those harmless 'internal discussions' had become full-fledged trade talks between the Broncos and Jets.  Remember the grapevine game?

Star-divide

After watching the reaction of Jets fans, I'd have to say that a large majority of comments and 'tweets I have seen have been Anti-Marshall, including from those in SBNation's Gang Green Nation, who had these scathing words -

Talent is unquestionable, but I'm being completely honest here when I say that I would find it almost impossible to root for an (alleged) women beater several times over, assault on a police officer, being the intended target in a murder case, drawing a gun on his own father, driving under the influence, all of which can be found here

You want to purge a locker room of a leader like Thomas Jones, and then add a walking epitome of a despicable human being, to work with a young team of budding stars.... I don't care if he comes gift wrapped with a bow on his head, their are cases of people who have made a mistake and can be rehabilitated, like the Braylon Edwards incident, and to some degree the Antonio Cromartie, even though the only mistake he made was not paying his child maintenance. Then there are cases where the guy is just plain scum, and that's what we have here.

Wow.  This is harsh, but as Wyatt mentions, Jets fans are slightly annoyed that the team simply let Thomas Jones leave for nothing - Jones signed with the Chiefs for peanuts(2 years, $5 million) and the Jets reportedly had a chance to match it and decided not to.  That said, calling Marshall 'scum' is a bit harsh.  Still, it gives a bit of insight to the thinking of fans whose teams are being linked to Marshall.

David Harris or bust!!! =)

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

This "woman beater" thing is starting to get to me.

There is no place in my world for a man that hits a woman. With that said, there has NEVER been any evidence that Brandon laid a hand on anyone. The guy is emotional, and has hooked up with women that argue, but where was it proven that he physically abused someone?

Whatever happened behind the scenes, we’ll never know. None of us were there. He might be a butthead, and starts arguments. All indications from his former, longtime girlfriend, though, showed her to be psycho, and a potential money grabber. Rod Smith was accused of domestic violence. Patric Roy was arrested for tearing up a closet door. How did they turn out?

There are times when a woman (or man) know just what buttons to push to get a desired result. I’ve been the victim of such circumstances, myself, in previous relationships. The bottom line is: no blood, no foul. Period.

All these bozos can believe whatever hearsay they want. Let the man come back and perform for the Broncos.

Jay were there any instances of abuse before the Darrent Williams murder?

I’m curious to why Marshall would suddenly lash out his frustrations upon his women…Could be a conection there as with his other outbursts the past couple of years. Since the murder trial has ended and the little gangster is put away, maybe Marshall now can have some solace comfort from it…

Harsh, But...

I wouldn’t go so far as that GGN quote, but I certainly have a hard time rooting for Brandon Marshall. Now, that doesn’t mean I want him gone at all costs (or any price, as it were) OR that I don’t empathize with him on some level and wish him well regardless. That said, there may not be that many fanbases and franchises willing to embrace a guy like BM at this point…

Who really cares what a so-called lily white and pure fan thinks over there? I don't and I am pretty sure the Jets don't either.

The name of the game is winning…Period! If they took Marshall and he helps them win a conference title or even a SuperBowl, this same guy or gal will be all man-lovish over him. They make stupid statements over there kind of like some on here do…Irrational, illogical and unfounded! Marshall would be an immediate upgrade for them and a wise target for Sanchez.

Agreed. Add in Tony Scheffler and an improved Mark Sanchez, and they’re more rounded than the Vikings. Whether they slowly squeeze some sort of trade on this or not, they’ve absolutely got to be kicking it around.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 14, 2010 2:52 PM MDT up reply actions

You are half right

If Marshall was to help the Jets win a title, they would certainly embrace him (I can’t make myself quote your “m-l” sentence) but THOSE would be the statements that would be “Irrational, illogical and unfounded!”

by warmick on Mar 14, 2010 3:26 PM MDT up reply actions

If you go and look at their boards, most of them don’t like the idea but are willing to listen if they don’t have to pay very much. A bunch of them keep comparing him to Cromartie, thinking they might be able to get him for cheap because we are fed up with him.The difference is, Cromartie sucks AND is lazy.

Upon further review...

I had never seen the total laundry list as laid out by the Jets poster’s link. It sure doesn’t make him look good.

by jayrockstone on Mar 14, 2010 2:02 PM MDT reply actions

How in the world...

Could J E T S like Braylon Edwards?? OMG…talk about useless! His drops in open field and in the endzone with NO coverage on him have become YOU TUBE classics! Just because coaches tendered him at a 1st and 3rd, NO jet fan should believe any coach on the Jets thinks he’s worth that money….are you kidding? That move was only to pay him less money! They got him for peanuts because that’s what he’s worth! .

You can list Brandon’s “rap” sheet and chronicle every entry, but he’s been convicted of any of them how many times….“0” that’s right! Brandon’s want’s and probably needs a change of scenary because of the situations he got into early after he was drafted….I do believe he’s better now. He knows he has top talent, and now he know’s he has to prove to be a leader to get paid! Frankly, I hate losing that talent…but if it’s a win-win and we all walk away for the better, then it’s good. If not, resign Brandon here in Denver, and we’ll watch him in the next 5-6 probowls….but don’t expectd to see Edwards there….it aint happening…im just sayin!

Just my opinion.

I work in law enforcement. The comment “…but he’s been convicted of any of them how many times…zero” doesn’t weigh much. It sounds good if you are talking to a lawyer or a jury, sure. But the frank truth is, a guy that has had numerous run-ins with the law is beyond very likely to have a multitude of problems.

Does that convict him in a court of law? Of course not. But in terms of common sense and public perception, it is reasonable to look at Marshall and see a troubed man who puts himself in terrible situations and makes terrible decisions. Unfortunately, guys like Darrent Williams have to pay the price.

Hogblog and Steve...

I have a feeling Brandon Marshall has done a lot of soul seaching since that fateful night in Denver and had serious trouble finding any relief from it. There has to be comfort from this somehow and if it’s moving on for Marshall then so be it. I hope the conclusion of the trial will bring him that little peace inside that has escaped him. I pray for Brandon to be the man his body is carrying around.

I think they need our TE, too

It’s curious that nobody brings him up. Tony Scheffler could go in the package. Dustin Keller was terrible for them last season, IMO. If we could ship BM and Tony to the Jets for Harris and a whatever rounder, I’d be very happy.

I wouldn't really cry if we took Mangold straight up

Undrafted (5th yr guy) Robert Turner behind Mangold

it would be nice, but not sure Jets are willing to give up b/c lack of their own depth.

I really

hope that they are 2011 and 2012 picks
This draft is too good to miss any picks

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm not against the trade as long as the picks are late

I’m not a big fan of Quinn, but as I said to Sayre the other day, he’s neither accurate, nor a good decision maker, so I thought it was a possibility, but unlikely.

P.S. The QB controversy has already begun. Profootballtalk wonders who is going to be the starter lol All this means is goodbye Simms.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 14, 2010 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Nothing better

then great drama on a sunday. Who knows who is going to be the starter. I am actually fine with this trade as long as it’s like a 6th and a 7thh or something
if it’s like a 4th I think it is too high. Oh the drama!!!!!!

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:18 PM MDT up reply actions

YES

Hillis and 6th next year and a conditional 2012 for Quinn I think it’s low enough What do you think Elvis????

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Absolutely I do

Of all the QB’s mentioned in mocks and rumors (usually Sayre’s because I read his the most), Quinn is the only one I thought was a real possibility. I thought it was unlikely, but I’m very happy with the price.

The best thing is that now we know we have a competent backup on the cheap, rather than having to draft one early or late, or take a guy like Delhomme, etc…

We get to keep our main picks and filled a hole, and got rid of Simms. Yeah, it’s a happy day.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

I like your comment, ea - Rec'd

Hillis should go somewhere that uses a FB – perhaps NYJ could be a good situation for him. He’s a tough blocker on STs and provides some tackling, but he was just languishing in Denver. They might also use him to trade off with Greene, and that gives them two very tough running backs. The 1st pick is no big deal, and the conditional probably requires Quinn to play X number of downs. Unless Orton falters, via performance of injury, it’s not likely that we’ll use it (I wonder if it extends if there’s not play in 2011?). Cheap price for a veteran in a similar system. I’ve never been a big fan of Quinn’s, but McD must see something that he thinks he can work with.

It all starts with the lines

by Doc Bear on Mar 14, 2010 3:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Sorry - NYJ should be Cleveland

I got excited…..lol. Still – Hillis deserves a better chance. He obviously doesn’t fit in Denver, and he’s got a lot of potential.

It all starts with the lines

by Doc Bear on Mar 14, 2010 3:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Bye bye Simms

Now the question is if Quinn will be the No. 2 QB, or if there is going to be a battle between him and Orton to be the starting QB.

by Mad Mel on Mar 14, 2010 3:16 PM MDT reply actions

Looks like

Everyone gets their wish with Simms now all but assured to leave. Quinn and Orton let the showdown begin!!!!!!!

I hope we gave up crap picks, b/c we may have gotten crap back.

Hillis a 6th next year and a late round conditional 2012

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:21 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm absolutely great with that trade

No more talk of Tebow, etc.. and Simms is gone.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 14, 2010 3:23 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree

now we can focus all of our picks on the rest of our team. Open up the year with Orton Quinn and Brandstater. I like it

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:26 PM MDT up reply actions

We only need a competent backup for Orton's ankles

I’m no fan of Quinn, but he’s certainly a backup at least, and has upside.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 14, 2010 3:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Lombardi

just called it a steal and I agree. Everyone knows we didn’t use Hillis and we traded 2 late round selections for a 1st round QB…sounds like a steal to me

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, he got upside at best

and a competent backup at worst. We didn’t give anything that was worth much to us. As you said, we never used Hillis.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

I'll bet Brady Quinn is dancing in the streets

He’s got to love coming to where there’s a coach who knows how to actually teach and develop QB’s.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 14, 2010 3:22 PM MDT reply actions

SERIOUSLY!!!

If anyone can revive his career it’s McD. McD is a qb coach and he can help Quinn. Hopefully he works with the potential he had coming out of college. Quinn has to be pretty estatic. He is going from the Browns who were a long way away from competing to the Broncos who are always competing for the playoffs

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:23 PM MDT up reply actions

feel bad for Peyton. I love him and I wish him the best, but for some reason he was on the bad list for McD. It’s probably for the best that he gets a fresh start. I wish him all the luck

by Nick Cast on Mar 14, 2010 3:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Why would you feel bad for Hillis?

He is going to a team that likely will actually play him. He has got to be as happy with the trade as we assume Brady is.

Marshall in NY would be tough.

He would really be treated harshly should he go there and slip up again. However, people can take a different stance once a trade is finalized.
