My Post-Brady Quinn mock
Hi, everyone. On the heels of this big trade that was made, I decided to do a new mock draft. Here are some pre-mock thoughts first:
1. With Quinn in the fold, I still think that the Broncos will draft a QB. Brandstater will be gone by opening day, as he is not the future.
2. Orton will probably be the starter for most, if not all of 2010, since he knows the system. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see Brady Quinn starting at some point next year if he can get a solid grasp of the system. After this year, Orton will be gone, possibly to the Browns after Delhomme and Wallace suck up the joint.
3. After Seattle passed on him, I have a gut feeling that B-Marsh will stay for one more year, at least.
4. Scheffler will be traded to the Rams for their fourth-rounder. They have a definite need at the TE position. Daniel Fells, who should be a backup, is slated to be their starter, and Randy McMichael is a UFA.
ON TO THE DRAFT!!
TRADE: The Broncos trade this year's #1(11th overall) to the Seahawks for their #1(14th overall) and their second-rounder this year(40th overall).
First round(14th overall): Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
I felt that he would be a reach at 11, so I figured we trade down a few, let the Hawks take C.J. Spiller at 11, and we can get Iupati at a little more reasonable price. We need that road grader to put next to Clady, and he is the man.
Second round(40th overall, from Sea): Donald Butler, ILB, Washington
I know that some of you may want Spikes here, but he is a character risk. Butler has been shooting up draft boards since the Senior Bowl, and is actually rated the #1 MLB/ILB by The Sporting News. They compare him to Jerod Mayo, and you know how he is doing in the same scheme in New England.
Second Round(45th overall): Cam Thomas, NT, North Carolina
The Broncos take a prospect to groom behind Jamal Williams.
Third Round: Now, for the sleeper pick. Johnathan Crompton, QB, Tennessee
Just hear me out on this one. This guy has more potential than Brandstater, and he improved a lot in his senior season. McDaniels could work with him for a few years, and he could be the starter eventually if Quinn isn't the man. TSN has him rated as their second QB overall, only behind Sam Bradford.
Fourth Round(from Rams): J.D. Walton, C, Baylor
The Broncos need a center. There is still a chance that they could get Mawae, and if they do, this guy can be groomed behind him.
Fourth Round: Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
Is a physical corner with good speed that is a good value at this spot. He can be groomed behind Bailey and Goodman.
No Fifth rounder
Sixth Round: Marshall Newhouse, G, TCU
Has the size that McD wants(6-3, 326). He is a project, but could be worth taking at this position. More of a guard in the pros, but is also categorized as a tweener.
Seventh round: Zoltan Mesko, P, Michigan
Best punter in the draft, and can kick off in an emergency.

The Rams Would be an intersting match for Scheff,
Especially considering their OC is a former long-time Andy Reid assistant. Reid likes quicker pass catching TEs.
But why does Seattle trade with us to move up 3 spots? Just because? I’d imagine – with the #6 pick they’d grab a player that would satisfy them up until #14.
I also think you overvalue Donald Butler and expect Ghee and Walton to be available in rounds they likely won’t be.
Otherwise, some pretty good ideas here.
What makes you think Brandstater isn’t the future? Or is at least incapable of developing into a starter? I’m not arguing – just asking your opinion. It seems to be a belief rising in popularity on MHR that Brandstater is done. Why? This is a ball-control read/accuracy based offense. Crompton – while he took major steps as a senior – never completed 60% of his passes in a single season. That’s not a shot on him. He has a strong arm, mobile, and pretty good mechanics. But we need passers who are accurate and can read/check down well – those happen to be Crompton’s two biggest weaknesses.
What is your basis for saying this?
Brandstater will be gone by opening day, as he is not the future.

I agree with you bradley...
If you think Brandstater sucks tell us why and back it up. I have never heard anything in either way about Brandstater. Just curious why you think Crompton is an upgrade over Brandstater, and why he sucks and will be gone.
Also, KO learned the system with no background in it and missed all OTA’s and started on day 1, who’s to say that Quinn couldn’t go throught something the same, except he’ll be here for all of the OTA’s.
I’m not partial to any of our QB’s but I do know that the best one will start when the season rolls in, not just the one who “knows the system” the best.
I don't think
that Tom sucks, but I just don’t see him being the future, either. I think that Crompton and Quinn have more upside. Those two QB’s on the roster, plus Orton, would probably lead to Tom’s departure, unless they stuck him on the practice squad.
As for the system, you have a good point. I think that Quinn played in something similar in college, and he could come in and pick it up pretty good. Maybe I am hearing too much talk about how Orton is the starter regardless. That shouldn’t be etched in stone yet. Quinn could beat out Orton. I wouldn’t be that shocked if he did.

Okay
So your opinion about Brandstater has no basis, other than your opinion. Not exactly what you said above:
Brandstater will be gone by opening day, as he is not the future.
BTW, Brandstater is not eligible for the practice squad, having spent a full year on the active roster.

fair enough
I think the job is Orton’s to lose. We should have a good competition going on this offseason.
If I were going to guess...
I would say that they are set at QB with, in my humble opinion, Simms as the odd man out. Brandstater looked very good against AZ starters during last years preseason. I hope the Bronco’s don’t give up on him yet!
I could have been a Rhodes Scholar, except for my grades.

Crompton
Not a bad thought. I don’t agree on Brandstater – we essentially just swapped out BQ for CS, and the only things that we’ve heard on Brandstater is that McD says that he’s making strides and is expected to compete in TC for the starting job. That’s really just a general statement of fact – that’s what happens in training camp. Woody Paige said that the Broncos aren’t that impressed with TB, but Woody has been far from an accurate source (souse?).
However – leaving that aside, Crompton is still an interesting choice. He’s flown under the general radar, but has the size and background that McD has chosen so far.
However, I’d have some substantial reservations about a college QB who can’t break the 60% completion mark. His career average is 55.2, a very low completion rate for a college QB. He only had one full season, but came on after Week 5 of that season, so we have comparatively little knowledge of him – even that season, he still hovered at 58.6%, which isn’t good. He needs a lot of work on his mechanics, but most college QBs do – the good side is that he comes from a pro-style offense and has the experience working under center, making decisions from that placement and has a good start on his footwork and mechanics, despite needing work. TD/INT ratio is good, though, and his Qb rating that year was in the normal range for a college QB with a potential NFL career. I’m not thrilled with him, but he’d be coming in to learn and develop, not to start. Interesting choice – more power to you.
It all starts with the lines
No to Iupati at #11 or #14
McDaniels values versatility at the interior spots and Iupati seems to be comfortable only at LG(see Senior Bowl playing RG). If you are looking for OL interior I would go with Pouncey, can play G or C, then possibly Render from VT. Please no Iupati ot any interior OL at #11 or #14.
PAbroncofan..is the cold getting to you?
I just retired from Philadelphia to Vegas and have many issues with your mock.
Some of these were above.
Brandstater has more ability than the top two draft QB’s. IMO
Seattle has #6 and #14. Not feasible to move to #11.
Orton is the SOLID #1 Bronco QB. It will take a year for Quinn to learn.
At #11, if no TD, McD takes BPA. Which means smart, versatile, tough. Think either Williams.
Denver does not have a 6th round pick.
I do like Butler and Thomas.
our picks
Denver does not have a 6th round pick.
We have: #1, #2, #3, #4, #6 & #7. The trade for B Quinn is for Hillis, #6 in 2011 & #4 -7(conditional) in 2012. This was misreported on MSM by some sources.
no goats, no glory.
Why does Denver not have a 6th round pick ?
Also, you say we will cut Stokely. If this were going to happen, it would have been done before we just payed him $500K bonus.
Unless you have insider info., how do you know either way on Brandstater ? I think our picks are too valuable this year to waste. Mcd better be sure TB isn’t working, before he uses a pick on a QB.
Trading down 3 spots for a second rounder would never happen.
I don’t think Butler is big enough and I think he is kind of a reach in the second.
Crompton??? Why? He was never good in college.
Iupati is safe and Walton is good.

Iupati and Clady
could be the next Art Shell and Gene Upshaw!
BPA = No Iupati at #11 or #14
At this point, I’m not interested in the Broncos taking anyone at #11 except Dez Bryant, Rolando McClain or Dan Williams. We can’t afford to disregard BPA just because we have a need on the interior OL.
